Working part-time at a family restaurant as a recourse, she finds herself inexplicably falling in love with her manager, a divorced 45-year-old man with a young son. Despite the age gap, Akira wholeheartedly embraces his mannerisms and kind nature, which is seen as spinelessness by the other employees, and little by little, the two begin to understand each other. Although unable to explain why exactly she is attracted to him, Akira believes that a concrete reason is not needed to truly love someone. How do you proactively grieve as a busy person? This week, Lindsay and Cait are joined by licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Mekel Harris, to discuss how you can address grief from a body-mind-spirit perspective. They dive into how understanding grief helps us better pinpoint how it shows up in the body, how grief impacts our personal growth with entrepreneurship, and simple & actionable tools you can use to begin to process grief. Mekel offers training, consultation, and supervision services to organizations around the world and holds an advanced certification in grief counseling, and has presented at over 30 domestic and international conferences. She focuses on pediatric, family, and community health issues, including grief and loss throughout the past 10 years. She is a TEDx speaker, FOX13 Memphis mental health expert, blogger, magazine and podcast contributor, author, and course creator. Show Notes: -Mekel's story - starting her career in the 90s, working with children in developmental differences, and she started working with parents who were grieving their kids' physical losses. -In Dec 2012, her mom died, and she started to make grief and loss her main focus. -Grief shows up in situations that you don't anticipate - we can identify it as an emotion like irritability, anger, and sadness. -Spiritual questions also come along with loss - how do I make sense of this loss in my life? What does this say about me? What does it say about my belief system? -We associate grief with the physical death of an individual, but there is “hidden grief.” This is the loss of experiencing joyful times, and we can be grieving different routines. -We can widen our scope when it comes to understanding grief which helps us better pinpoint how grief shows up – both when it's obvious and when it comes in a more subtle way. -Steps to take to grieve: 1.) Name it (as to not bypass an emotion) 2.) Claim it - owning your current reality to explore what's happening around me and within me 3.) Don't shame it. -Lindsay shares her experience navigating grief when a good friend & colleague passed away and how it manifested as “buzzing” at nighttime and how it affected her sleep. -Grief can live within the gap between what we envision for our lives vs. reality. -Simple tool: Cast a vision for yourself each day. Name and process the reality & tension that exists between the two. Move into action to address any grief and emotions that come up. -Anticipatory grief: proactive steps we can take to prepare for any future grief, loss or shifts/changes in our businesses -Set a 5 minute timer & ask yourself these 4 WH questions: 1.) Where are my thoughts taking me? 2.) What do I notice in my body? 3.) What's happening around me? 4.) What can I do to help myself at this moment? -We have 50,000 - 80,000 thoughts per day (and most are “negative”). -We can utilize self-compassion and self-care as tools to address grief and be proactive about processing it. -As entrepreneurs, we grieve financial losses, expectations around launches, and other losses; we toggle between vision casting and reality. -Mekel has been an entrepreneur for 3 years, and the reality of ALL the freedom is that we also deal with loss of expectations, and understanding this is a step towards self-care. -Schedule self-care: Full Focus Planner: offering you quarterly goals that break things down into goals - “What can I do for myself?” -As entrepreneurs, we may pivot and find that our original passions don't match the outcome of our vision and we experience great loss as a result - we can allow ourselves to pivot. -If you have not reached quarterly goals at the end of 2022, look at your calendar, and spend time anchoring into your needs with Mekel's resources. Death & Loss are an inevitable part of life and with that comes grief that many don't understand let alone know of healthy coping skills to help them navigate through the grieving process. In the black community we pride ourselves on being strong and having grit based on our keen survival skills however we often forget how essential vulnerability is and necessary during the grieving process. Dr. Mekel professional expertise and personal experience with grief gives light and understanding. Dr. Mekel explains what helpful and unhelpful grieving approaches look like (Mindful Grieving and Mindless Activities) when facing grief. I believe it so important to extend yourself self-compassion and honor whatever feelings come up for you when you are grieving this can be the most powerful yet comforting thing many can do to process grief in a healthy manner and as Dr. Mekel stated having a good supportive circle can be beneficial too! What stuck with me from this conversation was, awareness is the first step however intentionality & action lend itself to transformation! Dr. Mekel great words of insight! Mekel Kasanova RETURNS to update the gang on how things have changed for him and his career since the start of the BLM and Election madness. He also fills us in on a bizarre trend where many black creators have capitalized on the BLM movement to grow their personal brand.
A statement from Michele: "As a coily-haired girl, it took me decades to embrace my tresses. Now, as a crone, it's taking time to accept the strands of silver tinsel that arise from my crown. The challenges in acceptance, I realized, stem from outside--rather than inside. And that is just flat out not on. So this piece declares emancipation from external expectations related to hair and otherwise." Living in Happy Valley, Michele Mekel wears many hats of her choosing: writer and editor; educator and bioethicist; poetess and creatrix; cat herder and chief can opener; witch and woman; and, above all, human. Her work has appeared in various academic and creative publications, including having her poetry selected and read by Garrison Keillor on The Writer's Almanac. “Grief and loss is none-linear, so we tend to think of it as an A,B,C,D process but it really isn’t. Grief is more layered, it is cyclical. . . I think of it as us standing on the shore and we are looking out at the waves . . . and there are moments where we are standing and we think we can deal these ebbs and flows; and it touches our feet and we are able to stand, then there are moments where we think wow our feet are caving into the sand a I can’t stand still and we feel very unlevel . . .then there are movements where the waves comes in a crashed onto top of and we are shattered and feeling very overwhelmed. . .one of the things that can be very powerful is maintaining structure and daily routines. . . . establish rhythms to maintain a sense of normalcy that grief steals from us. ~Dr. Mekel Harris The pandemic, quarantine, and coronavirus itself caused a massive change in our lifestyle and sense of normalcy. This has caused panic, stress, anxiety, and huge amounts of uncertainty for people all over the world. Today we talk about how to better handle these changes even with social distancing. We also talk about how there is a difference in people who have had huge lifestyle changes and people who in addition to having their lives uprooted have also lost a loved one during the Stay at Home Orders. Topics Covered: -What is Trauma -Collective trauma versus individual trauma -Trauma for people who have lost a loved one versus the trauma of big lifestyle changes -Grounding Dr. Harris shares wisdom and insight into what people can do if they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed out from covid and the changes that have been taking place. “We are experiencing individual trauma; for some folks [within certain] communities over 100’s of years, but we are also experiencing collective trauma and so the more we talk about it and normalize the conversation we can begin to take steps and begin to heal ourselves and our communities” ~Dr. Mekel Harris The Black Lives Matter Movement and the collective trauma surrounding social injustice in this country have been at the forefront for a few weeks now. We brought in the expert Dr. Mekel Harris to talk about what we can do, what we should steer away from and how to handle these changing times. Dr Mekel Harris, Clinical Psychologist, speaks about her tremendous grief following the death of her mother who was also her best friend. Liz and Mekel draw comparisons between our individual losses experienced around the time of bereavement and the collective loss following the death of George Floyd, a brutal death that has left the world reeling and crying out for change. Mekel discusses the ongoing grief of racism, injustice and marginalisation and how white allies can help. The first thirty minutes cover Makel’s personal bereavement and the latter half of the episode explores the collective grief experienced by People of colour for centuries.

A nice Friday night brought to you by Tech Etc. and some magnificent hosts. On a past Sunday, we tried (and still recorded) this episode, while being consisteny interuppted by the likes of Fire trucks, buses and ambulances.... Maybe this is our signature sound? We discuss our playthrough of an indie game called Takeover, I demand some money for my future Xbox One Day one Edition trade-in for a One X, PC chat setup is painful, finessing in the streets and I'm having outrageous speaker feedback on my computer setup, while Mekel has started a fire with his Fight Stick review. We also cover life in general. Enjoy.
On this day we recap our Playstation E3 Live experience, Mekel takes a severe L in Tekken, prompting another fight stick purchase, E3 just finished... so you know we have to talk games. I'm sure I ranted about Forza 7 somewhere and some other things sprinkled in. Enjoy.

Pricing now starts at "Toyota Corolla" to "BMW" for new iMac Pro's, Mekel has his brand new MacBook damaged, recording stops a bunch of times (I'm guessing we are amatuers?), E3 is starting with games coming in, we go on tangents about life, opinions and we speculate about a soon to be revealed new Xbox console.
