In honor of Lao New year, we have a special episode featuring Danae Hendrickson, Chief of Mission Advancement and Communications at Legacies of War.  Danae shares her journey as a Lao American and her work with Legacies of War to address the devastating impact of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos caused by the U.S.'s Secret War in Laos and its secret bombing campaign.  Danae's family history as refugees from Laos deeply informs her advocacy for survivors and for greater U.S. responsibility in clearing UXO.  The episode highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the secret bombing of Laos during the Vietnam War, the challenges posed by funding freezes, and the importance of remembering this history.  This conversation emphasizes the importance of community led advocacy, historical awareness, and finding hope amidst the legacies of war in Southeast Asia.   Key Takeaways: America's Secret War in Laos and its secret bombing campaign dropping over 2 million tons of bombs on Laos between 1964 and 1973. The U.S.'s moral obligation to clear unexploded ordinances left by its secret bombing campaign that's killing innocent children today. How U.S. Foreign Aid is provided and why America should be held accountable and take responsibility to right its past wrongs. Legacies of War's mission to support community led advocacy and engage elected officials to continue to support the clearing of UXOs. The detrimental impact of funding freezes, including USAID, to local communities who are continuing to be harmed by the U.S.'s war campaign. Historical commemorations and education to ensure that the legacies of war are not forgotten.   Connect with us: Connect with Danae Hendrickson on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/danae-hendrickson/. Chris talks about how his love for sports began at a young age and continued into his college years. His relationship with our Lord grew in college at Vanderbilt University and later at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Chris's time at the seminary shaped his understanding of virtue, courage to witness the Gospel, and made him a better man. Chris talks about his saintly devotions and his favorite Bible passage and how they affect his life. The main topic of his interview is the organization Biking for Babies which exists to renew the Culture of Life in society. Biking for Babies works with young adults and trains them to develop relationships with pregnancy and maternity centers. These ongoing relationships are central to the organization's mission to help women and families who face unplanned pregnancies. The funds raised by the bike rides are distributed to the pregnancy and maternity centers who have a relationship with Biking for Babies. Chris talks about how the redemptive suffering experienced for 600 miles on a bike can be offered to God for the suffering experienced by an unplanned pregnancy. He wants all listeners to know that God loves you, desires a deep relationship with you, and wants you to share that relationship with others! Biking for Babies - Renewing the Culture of Life

Samuel Thomson Philippians 1:12-18 The Advance of the Gospel 12I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.

Skye has had a number of roles in ministry including local pastoral ministry. He served in a number of positions at Christianity Today including senior editor of Leadership Journal and as the Director of Mission Advancement for CT. These days, Skye is probably best known as the co-host of the popular Holy Post podcast (with Phil Vischer) and as the author and regular contributor to the With God Daily app and email service.  Skye has become a very important voice and thought-leader in today's church. He is an award-winning author, having written about a dozen books. We spend our conversation talking about most recent book, What If Jesus Was Serious About Heaven?: A Visual Guide to Experiencing God's Kingdom Among Us (published by Brazos Press and being released today October 17). It is the next volume in Skye's incredible “What if Jesus Was Serious…” series. Even though it is easy to read and filled with great illustrations, it will challenge you to think deeply about what the Bible has to say about what our hope and our destiny is in Christ Jesus. It is a great book and a fun conversation. I'm a big fan of The Holy Post and was delighted to get a chance to talk with Skye and to get to bring this conversation to you.

Published: March 08, 2021 Changing Our World‘s Jim Friend talks with Cande de Leon, Executive Director of the Office for Mission Advancement in the Diocese of Phoenix, about his new book, Heart of the Mission: Simple Ways to Bring People to Jesus. In the book, Cande shows what it takes to get back on track. With wisdom and humor born of his own experience, he shows how our Christian mission always begins and ends with people. To help us live this in our daily life and work, he guides us through three transformational principles for ministry and life: Strengthening relationships, Boldly growing engagement, and Connecting people to the mission.Whether you are a pastor, part of a parish staff, or a volunteer at your home parish, these principles apply to you. Because if we really want to make transformational change in our Church and our world, we first have to recognize the people in front of us — who they are, what they need, what gifts God has given them, and how he is inviting them to participate in the mission of the Church. Not merely another program to transform your parish, this book offers a simple yet radical invitation to roll up your sleeves and make a difference by getting back to basics.Order Heart of the Mission on Amazon. About Cande de Leon Cande de Leon has served as executive director of the Office of Mission Advancement for the Diocese of Phoenix since 2016. He leads a team committed to advancing the mission of Christ through stewardship, evangelization, and discipleship formation. He spent seven years in the Diocese of Corpus Christi serving as the director of parish stewardship and development, where he raised over $37 million (with a goal of $18 million) for the Legacy of Faith ~ Future of Hope Capital & Endowment Campaign. This is the final episode in a series. If you have not listened to parts one and two of Pastor Rob Lough's interview of Emmanuel Nabieu regarding his memoir My Long Journey Home, you should. Emmanuel Nabieu is the HCW Director of Mission Advancement and Partnership Development - whom we all call Nabs. Warning, the content of the first two episodes can be somewhat disturbing in truthfully depicting the violence that Nabs experienced as a child during the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone. Although the interview took place during a single session, we elected to break it into several episodes.  Part Three is the celebratory wrap up of the topic, covering his achievement of a lifelong dream of an education, his triumphant college years, and the decisions he made to return to the orphanage where he spent a decade before being reunited with the family he thought he had lost forever. As the Child Rescue Centre Director, he used his passion and experiences to lead the transition from institutional care to family-based care, to work toward family preservation to eliminate the trauma of separation in the lives of orphans and impoverished families, "fighting the fire, instead of the smoke," as he is fond of saying. Nabs continues to advocate and lead in bringing about that transition all across the continent of Africa and the globe, as part of his commitment to Helping Children Worldwide.I think you will agree with me that Nabs has a vital message to share on the importance of family, and his work to bring this message to the global stage is worthy of attention. His voice is uniquely passionate, vulnerable and inspiring. I hope you will go to Amazon.com and order a copy. It's really good.  Helpingchildrenworldwide.org

This episode is part two of a series. If you missed part one - you should return to the prior episode and listen to it first.  Although the interview took place during a single session, we elected to break it into several episodes. Warning, the content in this and the prior episode can be disturbing as it truthfully depicts the violence  and brutality that Nabs experienced as a child during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Part One takes us from Nab's early childhood through the time of his initial escape from the rebel soldiers who were hunting him. Part two takes us on his trek through the bush, his time on the streets in Bo, and his ten years in the orphanage.Emmanuel Nabieu is the HCW Director of Mission Advancement and Partnership Development - whom we all call Nabs. We  asked our dear friend, Rev. Rob Lough, former Pastor at Ebenezer UMC and long time supporter of the work being done at HCW, to guest host this episode.  This is a story about resilience and transformation. It is both Nabs' life story and also a beautiful testimony for hope and overcoming trauma. Nabs is using his experience living in an orphanage to bring global awareness and change to child welfare institutions. He is an example that we as humans can overcome difficult circumstances and use them to create something unexpected and positive. According to Nabs, he wrote this book as a way to address and overcome his trauma. He says that digging back into the past is a hard thing to do but was a huge part of his healing process. Nabs was raised in a rural village in Sierra Leone. His childhood was brutally interrupted by the civil war there when he was about 8 years old. When their village was attacked, Nabs' life was shattered. He initially recalls a bucolic, though impoverished, childhood in rural Africa, where scraping adequate nourishment from their labors was the number one struggle, and he was surrounded by the love of his family and the joys of camaraderie with his boyhood friends. He describes his rural life  as he and his friends begin to explore what it means to follow your dreams, and the wisdom of his elders as they try to imbue his future with hope and resilience. Then he shares how his early life of hope and innocence transformed almost overnight into a nightmarish existence of fear and uncertainty that overtook his entire family.  After hiding together in the bush and in holes dug for latrines at the family farm,  and nearly escaping, a unexpected ambush separates Nabs from his parents, some of whom are murdered before his eyes. Always trying to find his way back to family, he survives without them for months in the jungle, and then on the urban streets of Bo, as the war began to draw to a close. Eventually, he was brought into an orphanage. After living there for 10 years, he was finally reunited with his family. But his story doesn't stop there. He went to university and after he graduated he returned to the orphanage where he was raised where he later became the Director and used his passion and experiences to lead the transition from institutional care to family based care. He now works for Helping Children Worldwide as the Director for Mission Advancement and Partnership. His work brings this vital message on the importance of family to a global stage.Helpingchildrenworldwide.org

Martin Luther College VP for Mission Advancement, Rev. Michael Otterstater, preached at Resurrection this past Sunday on Romans 10:11-17 – 11 For Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 Yes, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 So then, how can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one about whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without a preacher? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news of peace, who preach the gospel of good things!” 16 But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who believed our message?” 17 So then, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message comes through the word of Christ. . In this episode, Cande de Leon and Nancy Padberg troubleshoot the confusion many people throughout the diocese express regarding CEA and CDA. Despite sounding remarkably alike, Catholic Education Arizona (CEA) and the Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) are two vastly different programs. CEA depends upon tax credit contributions, whereby individuals or corporations receive dollar-for-dollar credits, creating scholarships for students in Catholic schools. The CDA is strictly a charitable giving program that supports a number of ministries and apostolates throughout the diocese. Listen and learn why both programs are essential and how many lives are touched as a result.

The challenge of Christianity and Christian churches in the United States and Europe is that traditional churches and denominational organizations are struggling. The gap between growth of the population as a whole and the number of those identifying themselves as Christians is increasing. In addition, attendance in 'traditional' denominational churches has been on the decline for over two decades. Hundreds of churches each year are closing. The result of the decline has created strain on denominational agencies. Since individual church budgets have declined because of the decline in attendance, denominational organizations, dependent upon church budgets, greatly have had to reduce their own staff, ministry, and budgets. These declines and closings are happening across the denominational and theological spectrum. As the other-than-Christian population continues to outdistance the Christian population, there is a rise in the numbers of those identifying themselves as the 'nones,' meaning that they do not identify with any organized religious group. 'Spiritual' but not 'religious' is a common expression of identity. What does all of this mean for Christianity and for churches and denominations in the United States? How is God moving and leading during this time? What are we as Christians and churches supposed to do and to be in the context of these challenges? These are the sorts of questions to which we all, as Christians, are seeking to find answers. Consequently, there is, in an ironic way, or maybe even in a divinely providential way, a shared (dare I say 'united') conversation going on among us across the Christian spectrum. Some, like Stanley Hauerwas, make the case that as Christianity and the Church become less connected to, disentangled from, and disassociated with the dominant culture and politics of the nation, the better able they are to be more truly Christian the church, since the dominant culture and politics of a nation is always corrupting. Others, in seeing every problem and challenge as also an opportunity, envision, with eagerness, the possibility of the flourishing of new creativity within and from churches and Christian organizations. There is great deal of experimentation taking place. One such effort is Fresh Expressions. It is an effort that began in England, but has also taken root here in the United States. My guest is Dr. Chris Backert, who is the National Director of Fresh Expressions US. In addition to his role as National Director of Fresh Expressions US, he serves with the Baptist General Association of Virginia in the area of growth and venture development. He also serves as National Director for both Ecclesia, a US network of missional churches, as well as Missio Alliance. Previously, he served as pastor of New Life Christian Fellowship, a large university congregation in Blacksburg, Virginia and has been involved in the planting of three new congregations. Chris holds a D.Min. in Missional Church Leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary. You can learn more about Fresh Expressions, Chris, and his work at the Fresh Expressions' website:  freshexpressionus.org. In addition, an excellent book that gives a thorough understanding of this creative effort and how it is done is: From the Steeple to the Street: Innovating Mission and Ministry through Fresh Expressions of the Church by Dr. Travis Collins who is Fresh Expressions' Director of Mission Advancement and Southeast Regional Coordinator. The music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project. In this episode, Andrew visits with Kate Sell, founder and Managing Partner of Mission Advancement Partners. MAP is a collaborative team of individuals who work with Catholic parishes, dioceses and ministries to help them look at their own organizational strengths and weaknesses and develop short- and long-term strategies to better fulfill their mission. In this conversation they discuss how the vision, the team and fundraising go hand in hand to help an organization grow. Show Notes:Kate began her career by helping to establish Catholic radio stations across the United States. The Bible scripture that gives Kate inspiration was the story of Jesus turning water into wine. The servants of the wedding played a critical role in the miracle. They trusted Jesus and were willing to follow instructions to allow the miracle to take place. Kate sees her role in the Church as similar to the servants.Marketing, management and fundraising are the three strands of a "braid" that allows an organization to grow successfully. The norm now for strategic planning is 18-24 months. Organizations need short, focused plans to bring clarity to the moment and achieve goals."Re-envisioning" is assessing and evaluating how you can live out your mission over the next 18-24 months.Kate suggests that nonprofit leaders need to always keep in mind the one overarching goal: "If you do nothing else in the next two years, what is the MOST important thing that you can do."The first question that Kate asks a potential client is "how is your organization responding to the most pressing needs of the Church today?"Sometimes organizations need to make difficult decisions to abandon old ideas that are no longer important to the mission. One pitfall of planning is that people feel like suggesting that a change means that what was done in the past was wrong but that is often not the case. There is a season for some organizations and ideas but the seasons can sometime end.For more information about Kate Sell and her work or to connect with her, visit http://revolutionizingmissions.com/ or email her at kate@revolutionizingmissions.com.

One piece of advice was that there are no donors sitting in your office, you have to get out of the office to meet the donors where they are.LAI Principle: Linkage, Interest and Ability - how is a donor connected to your organization, what is their interest in your organization and do they have the ability to make a financial gift to your organizationWhen your organization is just starting a development program, Tara recommends casting a wide net. You need connections with many people from many networks to build a strong development foundation. Development Office is responsible for maintaining the continuity of the message when leadership changes.Mentality of tithing is different from paying bills. It is an opportunity to participate in ministry and priests and lay ministers should not be ashamed to talk about giving and to ask for donations. Organizations need to be able to accept donations in the currency that their donors are using. St. Paul Catholic Center was the first church in the diocese to offer a giving kiosk in the church for parishioners and students to use for their tithe. Now, they offer Venmo as an giving tool. Tara prefers that because it integrates with their database and accounting software. Tara is currently working on a capital campaign to renovate the bottom floor of their parish hall. They went through a planning process whereby they developed a master plan, conducted a feasibility study and then launched a campaign. A previous diocesan campaign was not done well and made many in the community wary of supporting another campaign. St. Paul's learned how strong the feelings were during the feasibility study interviews and spent extra time explaining the case and specifics of the campaign. They recently launched the public phase of their campaign and donors are responding very generously. St. Paul's had a cash reserve when they began their campaign and Tara believes that was useful. However, she recognizes that not every organization can wait until they have savings. Sometimes, the situation requires that the institution move forward with a major initiative despite not having a reserve or despite not being 100% ready. Tara recommends reading articles from the Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University and Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). These articles can provide tips and advice but are shorter and easy to consume.Book recommendations: Imagining Abundance by Kerry Robinson
