CUT! This week, Emily and V go back in time for a retrospective of truly despicable actions and quotes by a truly despicable man, Joss Whedon, whom fandom-at-large gave far too many passes for far too long. From killing off Cordelia Chase to punish Charisma Carpenter to outright racism against Ray Fisher, Joss Whedon's career is as full of people to whom he was joyfully cruel as it is full of nerdcore heavy hitters. Can you really separate art from the artist? What is the line beyond which art just isn't worth it?

We are back after a break of 2 weeks and we have a lot of TV shows and movies to talk about. So this week's watchlist will be in 2 parts. In this 2nd part, we start with the horror comedy Bhoot Police available on Hotstar which stars Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Yami Gautam and Jacqueline Fernandez. It is a story about 2 brothers who normally con people on the pretext of getting rid of ghosts. Yami Gautam finds them to save them from a ghost (Kichkandi) that is haunting her tea estate and during the process they come across actual ghosts. Next we talk about Helmet available on Zee5 and starring Aparshakti Khurana, Pranutan Behl, Abhishek Banerjee and others. The movie centres about the social cause of using contraceptives and how people have a stigma and prejudice against buying condoms in public for the fear of public humiliation. Next we move on to English movies, the first of which is Cinderella available on Amazon Prime and starring Camilla Cabello and others. It is a modern retelling on Cinderella in the form of a musical and deviates from the original story by Cinderella an independent and enterprising woman rather than a damsel in distress Finally we talk about Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, David Harbour and others and is available on Hotstar. It follows the story of Natasha Romanov in the timeframe between Captain America : Civil War and Avengers : Infinity War where she traces her origins and searches for her pretend parents and sister.
We've been wanting to put out this latest episode of Soundtracking for some time now, featuring as it does two people who were instrumental in bringing us Black Widow. First up is our old pal Lorne Balfe, returning to the podcast for a third time to discuss his excellent score for the film. Then we'll bring you a chat Edith had with director Cate Shortland, who's put a very distinctive spin on the story of Natasha Romanov. If you haven't seen it, it is still showing in a few cinemas, but is also available on Disney+ to customers with Premier access, and coming out on blu-ray and DVD on 13th September. It's cracking fun, and both Lorne and Cate have brought plenty new to the MCU table.
During this episode we will be discussing our opinions on the super spy and will also give some interesting facts about the spy and the actor. At the end of the episode we will talk about the Shang-Chi trailer.
To celebrate the release of BLACK WIDOW, we dive into one of the best superhero movies of all time. The movie marks Natasha Romanov's second movie appearance (the first being IRON MAN 2). ARealGirl, the FDØ and leader of the Detroit branch of the Avengers, Rob "Doc Rock" Otto, grab some shawarma and have a chat. Hi friends! This week, we are continuing our theme of “Reunited and it feels so good” with a film that is not only about bringing family back together, but is also bringing people back to the theaters in a big way: Black Widow. It's a movie that fills in a lot of the background of Natasha Romanov, and Scarlett Johansson really gets a chance to step into lead role of her own film in the MCU. The film touches on some important social issues that are often overlooked, but brings the action and the humor that you expect from a Marvel movie. The question is, is it arriving too late? The other item we need to discuss is how Karl Urban ups his game and goes after Jake this time. What are your thoughts on the film? Next week, we are discussing the film The Muppets Take Manhattan. It's a full house on this episode as Andy Nelson is joined by Kyle Olson from Marvel Movie Minute, Matthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics podcast, Craig Price from Matinee Heroes, as well as CJ Lindsey and Jordan Petersen. The conversation ranges all over the place. How popular was blue hair in the 90s? How great is our family of Natasha, Yelena, Alexei and Melina as played by Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz? What do we think about how Marvel dealt with the darkness of the Red Room and Natasha Romanov's backstory, not to mention the opening credits depicting essentially an abduction trade of young girls? What did we think of the changes from the comics with Taskmaster and the Red Room? How great is Ray Winstone as the villain, even when his accent's a bit off? What do we think of the red dust solution? And with F9 having just opened, what's with all these storylines right now that are all about family? It's a fun film to talk about and a worthy entry into the MCU, even if delayed due to COVID (not to mention feeling long overdue). "Black Widow" is finally here! After over a decade in the MCU, and release delays, Natasha Romanov's solo film is finally here. A stellar cast including Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz come together in massive action sets and exotic locations to bring Cate Shortland's film to life. Focusing on Natasha's past in the Red Room, as well as her struggle to forgive the "family" of her youth, "Black Widow", while at times succumbing to the stereotypical Marvel formula, does bring an enormous amount of heart and emotion to the relationship in Natasha's life. So...is Black Widow's long awaited solo film worth the wait, or does it fall flat?? Black Widow was released at the wrong time, in multiple ways. The new Marvel prequel was one of the most high-profile films to be displaced by the constantly shifting theatrical release schedule caused by the shuttering of theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Black Widow — a film set between Captain America: Civil War's superhero dust-up and Avengers: Infinity War's cosmos-spanning epic — feels like a movie that should have been released when it's actually set, instead of as a belated prequel. It's not that Black Widow is a bad movie or an unworthy member of the Marvel saga. Its brand of James Bond-esque spy-fi harks back to some of the more grounded MCU films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, less focused on superpowered smack-downs in favor of more traditional action movie fare. And if it had been released in 2016 after Civil War, that would have been fine. But Marvel's films have undergone vast shifts in tone since then. Doctor Strange opened up the connected universe to straight-up magic, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok both offered galaxy-spanning adventures with whole planets at stake, and of course, Infinity War and Endgame see the Avengers — and Natasha Romanov — fight to save quite literally all of existence. After all that, Black Widow's stakes feel low, especially for a character that fans have gotten to see in action in far bigger adventures for over a decade. For all the joking about how Thor could handle the Red Room without breaking a sweat, the over-the-top reality that is the regular day-to-day of the modern Marvel shows and movies hangs over Black Widow's throwback style. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carlos-roberto-gutierrez/message

Captain America: The First Avenger ended with Steve Rogers defeating HYDRA and waking up in the modern day. Captain America barely had a chance to understand what was going on before he was thrust into fighting the Chitauri invasion in The Avengers.Post the Battle of New York and Phase 1 of the MCU as a whole, the world is aware of potential threats from other worlds, as well as the mightiest heroes Earth has to fight them, but The Avengers are disbanded for now, and Captain America is working for S.H.I.E.L.D, along with spy Natasha Romanov. The thing is, not only is HYDRA not defeated, they've been infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D over the last fifty years and the measures designed to protect the world from future threats is actually going to be used to annihilate HYDRA opposition. There's only one man who can step up....Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a superhero movie, but it's also a brilliant political thriller, and it's this ability to mix the super and the very real fear of oppression and paranoia over drone attacks, surveillance states and conspiracy theories that makes The Winter Soldier sit towards the very top of the best that Marvel Studios have ever released. It's got great Cap, tense and brilliant choreographed fight scenes, espionage, returning villains, the best Black Widow put to screen and Robert Redford! It's top tier Marvel, imminently rewatchable and gloriously fun. But wait... that Winter Soldier chap looks familiar....?!?I would love to hear your thoughts on Captain America: The Winter Soldier!GET IN TOUCH....Twitter @verbaldioramaInstagram @verbaldioramaFacebook @verbaldioramaLetterboxd @verbaldioramaEmail verbaldiorama [at] gmail [dot] comWebsite verbaldiorama.comSUPPORT VERBAL DIORAMA....Leave a 5-star rating/review: Apple Podcasts or Podchaser Join the Patreon: patreon.com/verbaldioramaThank you to all the patrons Simon E, Sade, Jardiel, Claudia, Simon B, Laurel, Derek, Jason, Kristin, Cat, Andy, Mike, Griff, Luke, Emily, Michael, Matt and brand new patron Trevor!NEW! This week on the Other Identity they talk about the most recent movie released in the DCEU, Birds of Prey. The film has had the worst opening weekend of any DC movie. Robbie and Ben discuss what they liked about it, what they’d change and what was just down right bad. They also preview some of the upcoming comic book movies that are must see. Both Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984 are due out this summer. Black Widow is set to wrap up the story of Natasha Romanov in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While, Wonder Woman 1984 is continuing the story of Diana Prince after we last saw her in her debut origin movie. Plus, Robbie has a conspiracy about the future of Sony’s cinematic universe and how Spider-Man will fit into it. Since the fall out of the last MarvelSony deal, fans are speculated and wondered how a shared universe may work. What if they don’t plan on sharing their universes but instead making more? The key ingredients may have been hiding in the past this whole time.
For never was there a tale of more woe than that of the MCU completely disregarding the immense history and chemistry and tangled love of Bucky Barnes and Natasha Romanov. For the fourth time, Alysa Auriemma joins Brian on The Other 51. But this time, there's biggest stuff to talk about than Captain America, Chris Evans and Kylo Ren.(I mean, they do talk about Avengers: Endgame. They're not monsters.)Alyssa joins Brian to talk about the writing and publication of her new book, “All Daughters Rise.” Alysa discusses the themes of her book and how she was inspired to write the book in part because of the gaps she saw in contemporary fiction. Where's the intersectionality? Why does the main character always react so calmly when things happen? We're all way more Scott Lang than Natasha Romanov, and maybe our fictions should reflect that.Alyssa also discusses the book's journey to publication, the challenges and frustrations she faced in trying to find an agent and a publisher, and why she made the decision to use Inkshares. She is nearly halfway to her goal of 750 preorders by January to get the book published. Also, much praise is lavished upon Rainbow Rowell. All Daughters Rise on InksharesAlysa on TwitterGeek Love: A Novel by Katherine DunnThe Married Man by Edmund WhiteWayward Son by Rainbow RowellCarry On by Rainbow RowellEpisode 52: Hating Kylo Ren with Alysa AuriemmaEpisode 44: Generic Hot Actor Guy with Alysa AuriemmaEpisode 27: Always Writing with Alysa AuriemmaSubscribe:Apple PodcastsOvercastSpotifyGoogle PlayRSSSupport Me on Ko-fi

In this episode, the Chicks discuss Black Widow and the possibility that she might finally get her own solo movie from Marvel. What would that mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? But more importantly, what would it mean for fans? Especially women and girls who would like to have some role models of their own? What would it mean to have a female lead character who's not defined by her relationships to the men in the group? And what went wrong with Black Widow's presentation in Avengers: Age of Ultron that might have set her back a bit? The discussion ranges from when (or if?) the solo movie would happen, and whether it might or might not be a better fit for Netflix. What about recasting younger for a prequel series? We also discuss the action figures, the toys — or lack thereof — and if the industry is ever going to really understand that the audience is 51% female...
