Summary: Welcome to Tinseltown, folks! This week, Holly(wood) and Devin dive into the glitz, the glam, the seedy underbelly of the symbol of the entertainment business. Holly recently moved closer to the epicenter of celebrity, while Devin has always been terrified to visit - intimidated by all of the people who figured out how to get famous. They find that across genres Hollywood has always held a wide appeal, and in almost no other theme is the difference between romance and murder so thin. Topics Discussed: The Heart (4:42): Devin discussed The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, a novel that traces through the long life of famous actress Evelyn Hugo as she shares a tell-all with up-and-coming reporter Monique Grant. Please be aware that below is a *spoiler* but also a key plot point that Devin couldn't avoid touching on: Through the interview process and early-ish in the book, Evelyn reveals to Monique that the great love of her life was actually a woman - fellow actress Celia St. James - and that she is bisexual. Devin finally understood why *everyone* was trying to push her to read a book about a celebrity with 7 male husbands. Reid explores the challenges of Hollywood and conformity in society writ large through the life of Evelyn Hugo - she is a woman in a patriarchal society, she is a cuban woman passing as a white woman, and she's bisexual in an era when deviance from the norm and wlw was demonized. Evelyn's grit, drive to succeed, and nimbleness to use societal expectations to craft the life she wanted is admirable and exciting to read. There is a final twist at the end of the book, though, that Devin felt was unnecessary and pushed the book from engaging to dramatic. The Dagger (20:13): Holly discussed The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy, a crime fiction novel from 1987 that is loosely based on the infamous (real) unsolved case of Elizabeth Short, who was found brutally murdered and dismembered in Los Angeles in 1947. The fictionalized version follows two LAPD detectives - Bucky and Lee - who become obsessed with the victim and her case. Holly's key takeaways were: Ellroy is a very gritty noir writer, and the novel not only exposes the corruption, violence, and depravity that lies just beneath the glittered surface of Hollywood, but toxic masculinity and themes of violence as well. Bucky and Lee are friends but also rivals in love with the same woman - Kay Lake (Lee's live-in girlfriend). There is a black-and-white film version of the novel and Kay is played by Scarlett Johansen. Their rivalry and their methods of beating suspects, use of violence to solve cases, etc. allow Ellroy and the reader to explore the moral question of if the ends justify the means. When uprisings took place throughout the Middle East and North Africa in 2011, it seemed like Egypt would be the big success story. But in the last few months, civil rights activists say it has become a nightmare. In October, the government more than doubled its pace of executions, putting nearly 60 people to death. In November, Egyptian state security arrested three prominent human rights leaders with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, or EIPR. Executive director Gasser Abdel-Razek and colleagues Kareem Ennarah and Mohamed Basheer were held on terrorism charges after they met with Western diplomats.Related: Photo essay: Arab uprisings began with quest for freedom“The EIPR is kind of Egypt’s ACLU or the NAACP,” said Ramy Yaacoub, founder and executive director of the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy in Washington, DC. “It's that revolutionary and it's that important.”Yaacoub said the arrests hit a raw nerve. It seems like the country is at its lowest point, he said, 10 years after such a hopeful moment during the so-called Arab Spring. A protest movement led by young Egyptians did the unthinkable in February 2011 — deposing military dictator Hosni Mubarak.Related: Egypt social media censorship targets women on TikTok“And I can tell you ... initially there was so much freedom of speech and freedom of expression, assembly, I didn't believe it,” Yaacoub said. But by April 2011, he remembers thinking that the different revolutionary factions were struggling to work together. “We were successful in creating a political vacuum,” Yaacoub said. “The only people that were around to offer ... a viable option or an alternative were the Muslim Brotherhood and their affiliates. They were prepared and ready.”The Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi was elected president. That was something the Egyptian military would not let stand. Yaacoub said by June 2013, he realized the military was going to win the power struggle. This is completely out of our hands. Other people are going to take over now, unfortunately,’” he said.Morsi was driven out of power by massive protests. Former military chief Abdul Fattah al-Sisi took over and was elected president in 2014. Then, in a series of new laws and executive orders, Sisi solidified his rule. He restricted due process and the freedom of expression. The military used force to end anti-government demonstrations. Human rights groups say political opponents were detained, tortured and killed. Many NGOs were forced to close. “It's been a really steadily escalating campaign of targeting and repression, using lots of different tools, using lots of different laws."Stephen McInerney, executive director, Project on Middle East Democracy“It's been a really steadily escalating campaign of targeting and repression, using lots of different tools, using lots of different laws,” said Stephen McInerney, executive director of the Project on Middle East Democracy, a group that had helped train some activists and protest leaders during the uprising. “And of course there are, you know, very difficult circumstances on the ground for anyone who wants to engage politically.”At this point, he said most democracy activists have fled Egypt. Those remaining have gone underground. McInerney’s organization uses encrypted communications to talk to them. Meanwhile, McInerney said, Western countries have done little to support pro-democracy efforts inside Egypt. “We've been disappointed to see other democratic countries overlook democratic values in order to profit by selling weapons,” he said.Like the US and most recently, France. During a visit with Sisi earlier this month, President Emmanuel Macron said France would continue to sell weapons to Egypt, despite its human rights record. The Trump administration has made the same decision, allowing military assistance to flow. And Donald Trump even called Sisi his “favorite dictator.”At that meeting in France, Sisi dismissed criticisms about human rights. "You cannot present the state of Egypt, with all that it has done for its people and for stability in the region, with it being a dictatorship,” he said. Sisi has also defended his actions by saying they’re necessary to fight terrorism. “One of the things that the Egyptian foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, has said over and over again is that ‘it's unfair to criticize Egypt because this is human rights as formulated by Egypt's Western critics,’” Cook said. “‘It's really just a form of colonialism.’”But Cook said the recent arrests of prominent human rights activists in Egypt set off an unprecedented international outcry. The UN, the European Union, and members of the EU parliament called for their release. Also, US President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for secretary of state, Anthony Blinken, and celebrities such as Scarlett Johansen.“I think the Egyptians understood after the outcry that they perhaps had gone too far,” Cook said. “But it’s very hard to tell what's going on.” Earlier this month, the three staffers with the EIPR were abruptly released. But they still face charges. And thousands of other less-famous prisoners remain behind bars. Still, their release gives Ramy Yaacoub of the Tahrir Institute some hope. “Social political change takes time — a long time. And as humans, we want prosperity right now. One hundred years from now it will be a footnote. ... This is my first movie review. There are so many choices out there that I just picked one. I was interested in this movie when it was first released, and I watched it the day of the release on TV. In the middle of watching this movie, David came in and said that we got the domain for Stream(H)er, and the podcast was going to be a reality. [03:54] A marriage story is as plain Jane as marriage is. Once the glitter is off, we become a marriage story. [05:14] I wasn't rooting for anyone after watching this movie. There wasn't a bad guy. I saw both of their points. That was a plus for me. [06:20] Laura Dern is getting a lot of attention. She was a really great divorce lawyer. [07:00] Alan Alda killed it as the first divorce attorney who was too kind. [07:59] Kyle Bornheimer was also in the movie, but he didn't have any speaking parts. [08:33] Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansen were the leads. They were both incredible. [09:12] There is a scene where Adam Driver sings that didn't resonate with me. [09:45] How can two people who love each other so much end up so far apart? This was at the heart of the movie and this is at the heart of most marriages. [10:07] They have an intense discussion in the movie, yet she refers to him as "honey." I thought this was really powerful how she fell back on words and rhythms that were in her marriage. [10:53] Go watch a Marriage Story. It is worth it. It deserved all of the nominations and awards. [11:03] I was going to make my first Spanx review a 4 just because of the Hallmark movie girl in me. TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Gersha Phillips on Star Trek Design This week, Star Trek.com advertised the final days of Star Trek: Discovery's Paley Center exhibit - Fight for the Future - by speaking with Costume Designer Gersha Phillips. In the 4 minute, 43 second video, Phillips spoke about re-designing the Talosians “The Talosians were a really cool species that we got to do, reimagining them from the TOS and the Original Pilot. My first design, one of the notes I got from Alex [Kurtzman]was to try to look at the original things and revamp them. So I did my very first design, one of the notes that I got from Alex [Kurtzman] was to try to look at the original things and revamp them. So I did my very first design, and he actually threw back to me and said ‘Can I go a little bit further and do what you do?'” Star Trek's costume designer also discussed the Red Angel suit, sighting Scarlett Johansen's “Ghost in the Shell” costume as inspiration. She continued, saying “When we were given the task, Mario [Moreira] came up with this idea of the propellor wings that would push her through time [...] and we had this whole other idea where we were gonna build - it was gonna be a pod - and then the angel suit would come out of the pod. This week, the 75 year old New York native sat down with Star Trek.com to talk about his time on Deep Space Nine. Shawn told the site that he had never owned a television and only saw pieces of Star Trek: The Next Generation when in hotel rooms, but he was impressed ”I always thought, “Wow, the cinematography is so great and it's so interesting-looking, with these interesting-looking people and creatures.” So, when I was asked to do DS9, I was thrilled. I loved the idea.” Shawn also had kind words about Star Trek's fans, telling StarTrek.com “Star Trek fans are a particular group. They're very distinctive as people. There seem to be no evil Star Trek fans. They're a distinctly goodhearted group of people [...]. It's an interesting group of people.” Trek the Stars with “Antique Roadshow” If you like history, reality TV, or are just REALLY jonesing for some new small screen Star Trek representation, PBS might have something for you. This week, the long-running appraisal series - “Antique Roadshow” - is setting its sights on outer space. The episode, titled “Out of This World”, is part of PBS' “Summer of Space” promotion, and will feature signed memorabilia from Emilia Earhart, John Glenn, and Neil Armstrong - as well as production pieces from Star Trek! TV Guide's description of season 23's 19th episode reads “Space-themed treasures are featured, including NASA Space Program autographed photos; a 1737 celestial and terrestrial atlas; and a Star Trek treatment, script, and letters.” The Chicago Tribune also posted an interview with long-time “Antique Roadshow” appraiser, Leila Dunbar. TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Gersha Phillips on Star Trek Design This week, Star Trek.com advertised the final days of Star Trek: Discovery’s Paley Center exhibit - Fight for the Future - by speaking with Costume Designer Gersha Phillips. In the 4 minute, 43 second video, Phillips spoke about re-designing the Talosians “The Talosians were a really cool species that we got to do, reimagining them from the TOS and the Original Pilot. My first design, one of the notes I got from Alex [Kurtzman]was to try to look at the original things and revamp them. So I did my very first design, one of the notes that I got from Alex [Kurtzman] was to try to look at the original things and revamp them. So I did my very first design, and he actually threw back to me and said ‘Can I go a little bit further and do what you do?’” Star Trek’s costume designer also discussed the Red Angel suit, sighting Scarlett Johansen’s “Ghost in the Shell” costume as inspiration. She continued, saying “When we were given the task, Mario [Moreira] came up with this idea of the propellor wings that would push her through time [...] and we had this whole other idea where we were gonna build - it was gonna be a pod - and then the angel suit would come out of the pod. [...] When we were first given it, it was said that the suit was a thousand years in the future, and then it turned out to be a suit that her mom was wearing from the past” Wallace Shawn Remembers the Grand Nagus Can you imagine the Ferengi without their Grand Nagus? The thought is inconceivable! The capitalist species could have fallen victim to any number of classic blunders. The most famous of which is 'never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well known is...well, it doesn’t matter! What we’re REALLY talking about is the incomparable Wallace Shawn, and his portrayal of Top-Ferengi - Grand Nagus Zek. This week, the 75 year old New York native sat down with Star Trek.com to talk about his time on Deep Space Nine. Shawn told the site that he had never owned a television and only saw pieces of Star Trek: The Next Generation when in hotel rooms, but he was impressed ”I always thought, “Wow, the cinematography is so great and it's so interesting-looking, with these interesting-looking people and creatures.” So, when I was asked to do DS9, I was thrilled. I loved the idea.” Shawn also had kind words about Star Trek’s fans, telling StarTrek.com “Star Trek fans are a particular group. They're very distinctive as people. There seem to be no evil Star Trek fans. They're a distinctly goodhearted group of people [...]. It's an interesting group of people.” Trek the Stars with “Antique Roadshow” If you like history, reality TV, or are just REALLY jonesing for some new small screen Star Trek representation, PBS might have something for you. This week, the long-running appraisal series - “Antique Roadshow” - is setting its sights on outer space. The episode, titled “Out of This World”, is part of PBS’ “Summer of Space” promotion, and will feature signed memorabilia from Emilia Earhart, John Glenn, and Neil Armstrong - as well as production pieces from Star Trek! TV Guide’s description of season 23’s 19th episode reads “Space-themed treasures are featured, including NASA Space Program autographed photos; a 1737 celestial and terrestrial atlas; and a Star Trek treatment, script, and letters.” The Chicago Tribune also posted an interview with long-time “Antique Roadshow” appraiser, Leila Dunbar. Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s #SpockingFives Sir Wilfrid Laurier...are you out of your VULCAN MIND?!? Who is Sir Wilfrid Laurier, you may be asking? Well, he is the first French-Canadian prime minister of the Dominion of Canada and the face of Canada’s Five Dollar Bill - and he is being transformed into our beloved Mr. Spock. In a trend that is currently accompanying the hashtag SpockingFives, budding Canadian artists are drawing pointy ears, slanted eyebrows, and Star Fleet Deltas on the Canadian five dollar bill, turning the Former Prime Minister into a Vulcan first officer. While the act is technically NOT illegal, the Bank of Canada warns “there are important reasons why it should not be done. Writing on a bank note may interfere with the security features and reduces its lifespan. Markings on a note may also prevent it from being accepted in a transaction.
