In this episode of Other Worlds, we delve into the fascinating world of robots and monsters, and the intersection of science fiction writing and pop culture. Robots and monsters have clearly captivated the imagination of writers and artists for centuries, to discuss this theme is Other Worlds exhibition curator Renee Orr. We discuss magazines with evocative cover art, 19th and 20th century classics like Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' and Frank Herbert's 'Dune', and objects like the Blade runner origami unicorn and a gorilla soldier from Planet of the Apes. Her performance, however, revealed none of this. In fact, “Crazy” went on to become a massive hit, spending 21 weeks on the Billboard charts and becoming one of her signature songs. In 1967, The Doors began recording their sophomore record, Strange Days, at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood. The album was released the following month and included two Top 30 singles, “People Are Strange” and “Love Me Two Times.” It peaked at No. 3 on the US album chart and, 34 years later, received a platinum certification from the RIAA. 21 Aug 1983 Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone had a four-hour brain surgery operation, after being found unconscious in a New York Street where he had been involved in a fight. 21 Aug 1997 Oasis' third album 'Be Here Now', became one of the fastest selling albums ever, shifting over 350,000 units on the first day of release. The cover image for Be Here Now was shot at Stocks House in Hertfordshire, the former home of Victor Lownes, the head of the Playboy Clubs in the UK. Today, I'm joined by the Founding Principal at Creative Urban Alchemy, Ifeoma Ebo. Ifeoma is a Brooklyn native with a background in architecture, urban planning, real estate development, and environmental sustainability. In our conversation, we dive into the details of her latest project, The Perfect New York Street, which is a modern take on the streetscape of Third Avenue between 33rd and 34th Street. She walks us through what people might see, hear and feel when walking through this re-crafted space, and highlights the ripple effect it can have on the local economy and neighborhood safety. Ifeoma and I discuss the large-scale focus on equity and infrastructure in various global and domestic cities, with a particular focus on New York City. There's a movement towards how we're reconfiguring cities in the public realm to address damaging practices, such as redlining, in city development. Ifeoma has a unique perspective on the intertwined issues of sustainability, criminal justice reform, and housing affordability due to her upbringing between Brooklyn and her mother's village in Nigeria, as well as her studies at Cornell University and MIT. We talk about the design challenges that cities across the population spectrum are facing to make streets efficient for vehicles, productive for businesses, and accessible for residents. I get Ifeoma's take al fresco dining on city sidewalks and ideas for how that experience can be improved. We also touch on where funding is typically sourced from for urban transformations and the challenges with maintenance and operations in the public realm. About the Guest:Ifeoma Ebo is the Founding Principal at Creative Urban Alchemy, a NYC-based studio that specializes in strategies and frameworks for design, engagement and spatial planning in the areas of architecture, urban planning, real estate development and environmental sustainability. Ifeoma teaches at the graduate level at Columbia University and Syracuse University, and has taught at Cornell University and the University of Cape Town. She is also active with community initiatives, including with Architecture for Humanity and the BlackSpace Urbanist Collective. New York City's street vendors are as much of a fixture of the city as steam rising from the sidewalk, or a taxi driver with a story to tell. But coupled with gentrification, the pandemic, and more frequent flash flooding, how is the industry faring?
You can be you or be whomever you want to be in New York City.New York lends itself as one of the most magnificent backdrops in this world, while also being a place where ones expression can be truly embraced without judgement. My guest this week on the podcast is Johnny Cirillo, 'Watching New York'. He captures not only the beauty of the city, but it's beautiful inhabitants through street style photography in the most natural, candid, yet polarizing ways possible. His page is what REAL New York fashion dreams are made of in my opinion as well as Vogue magazine, which he was featured in recently.By bringing a very realistic viewpoint on fashion in the city - Johnny, showcases New Yorkers who piece their outfit's together creatively in various ways as he aims to share the essence of the city and its people in their natural state. Rarely, does that involve high fashion runway looks, but rather the raw and eclectic diversity of New Yorkers style season after season. In our interview Johnny reveals so much insight into his life and love for New York City, along with more about his account ‘Watching New York,' and the creation of it. Also, his hopes and plans on where he sees the future of the account and his work going (THINK BIG). And, ultimately what he looks for in the people he shoots and where he captures his street style.I will say I was surprised to hear the one key ingredient Johnny looks for in his subjects….and it's not always the best style. Can you guess what he looks for? You could end up next on Watching New York's account with all the amazing insights from Johnny. Head on over to his account to see firsthand more amazing street style at @watchingnewyork and be sure to follow!Enjoy the interview and style tips. ---Please subscribe, rate, and review Gossipnista wherever you listen to your podcasts. This week Michelle speaks with Joy Joseph, a multi-talented drummer, percussionist, singer/songwriter, and actor originally from London, but currently residing in Brooklyn. Joy's passion for music started early, partly due to the fact that she was born into a musical as the daughter of Trinidadian Calypso legend Alexander D Great. But she found her own sound and musical path, which led her to become part of Mr Hudson's Library. This connection put Joy on track for her musical career and has since toured with artists such as Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, and Calvin Harris to name a few. In 2016 Joy released her first EP 'Who I am' which features her hallmark Afro-Caribbean percussion, 80's ethno-electronic sound, vocals, and production. But when Joy isn't busy being a musical legend; she shares her love for our favourite feline friends, posting and sharing funny cats on social media. Joy's cat Graham is still running things in West London at her uncle's house while she is in the states. But she's currently looking after cats; who are living in the courtyard of her Brooklyn apartment, who she refers to as the Georgette's. If you want to find out more about Joy and her music you can find her @joy_josephmusic on Instagram and www.joyjosephmusic.com/music Join Michelle for weekly episodes as she invites guest speakers from coaches, personal trainers, yogis, business owners, creatives, and more to discuss their personal success stories and well-being. Oh, and of course CATS. All of our guests are cat owners and have such amazing stories about their beloved pets. So whether you want to start a journey of wellness, listen to inspirational stories about life and cats, we are the place to be. You can follow Michelle on Instagram and Facebook @Chattycatscare. After visiting the pop up Playlab and seeing the great work being done there, I was able to catch up with Emma who established and runs PlayfulAnywhere that has also been responsible for the immersive take over of the old Border’s store, and the Playbox shipping containers that seem to crop up all over the place. I believe her job title is Chief of Play. Prior to this Emma was known for running the online magazine the Culture Vulture and as an events manager for things such as the Northern Art Prize and the opening of the Howard Assembly rooms.Often it seems that play, fun, and conviviality can be quite undervalued, or even hard to achieve, when putting on or making spaces for creative activity but Emma prioritises these things above all else - building something that doesn’t necessarily even need to be understood or viewed in artistic terms, and maybe is better as a result.Playlab is open everyday 10am–4pm until 6 May at 21 New York Street, LS2 7DT, Leeds.

The podcast team members come to us from three remote locations to share their insights. Although their focus is not specifically on making a difference to people who make a difference to us, their musings range from having thoughts no one has thought before to the fact that people who gossip about others will sooner or later be gossiping about us.

Harvey Stein has been shooting in the streets of New York for over 40 years. To borrow a quote from George Jones, Harvey was street photography when street photography wasn't cool. What's the story on these hot pretzels?
I'm back with an all new show this week! Come with me as I complete a request from quite a few people, among them StrangeTikiGod from the DPN forums, as I go to MuppetVision 3D. Note: Jeff called "dibs" on the Muppet Pre-show, so this week I'm just playing the actual Show, and not the pre-show. Catch that on an upcoming episode of the Meandering Mouse Podcast! After Muppetvision is perhaps the funniest moment in DPN History! Jeff from Houston meets Squirty The Snowman over at Winter Summerland Miniature Golf. The potty-mouthed women that you hear are both the Vacation Fiance and the Meandering Minnie, and SamZotto makes an appearance as well! I totally set Jeff up, and he took it hook line and sinker! In between everything, are segments from New York Street at the Disney-MGM Studios (where I discover that it's a horrible place to record...) and the beach at Disney's Polynesian Resort! Have fun!
