He decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 20 in order to get a change of pace in life and pursue his desire for world travel. He chose the Military Justice job field which he felt would provide him good work experience over time. What was supposed to be a 4-year enlistment, turned into a 20-year Marine Corps career, mainly credited to the exceptional leadership and guidance he's received. In 2020, Victor took to his art, design, and entrepreneurial skills and invented a uniform item called UnderCoverClip, which is now carried by retail military and tactical stores worldwide. In 2022, he decided to make his passion for art public, when he agreed to do a portrait commission for a friend, which then led to several more art commissions, participation in art shows, presenting at Fleet Week San Diego Art Exhibition, being a featured artist at the Oceanside Museum of Art and now becoming a sponsored artist attending and participating in a veteran and indigenous art exhibition being held in Chicago in 2023. Sarah Stieber says she's a color-obsessed painter with healthy self esteem and terrible sense of direction. She's wanted to become an artist for as long as she can remember and has been striving and thriving in pursuit of her passion for the past decade. She spent the summer after Junior year in High School studying figure drawing in Italy and her teacher encouraged her to pursue art in college. She majored in painting at Boston University and had the opportunity to return to Italy to study abroad. In her Venice art studio she shined colored lights on her model and created her first “Electric Realism” painting, a style that has informed her work ever since. In Boston and Italy her peers and teachers always said that her paintings screamed “California!”, so upon graduation she returned home to San Diego to pursue art in the place that inspired her early work. Now she create celebratory paintings out of her San Diego art studio exploring themes of social justice, resilience, and joy. Every painting has a story, and she likes to produce films and curate exhibitions and installations (mostly covered in rainbows) to spark dialogue and offer more insight into her work. Her paintings have been showcased at the Oceanside Museum of art, the Wausau Museum of Art, and in art galleries from London to Australia. She was a featured artist At Spectrum Miami and was named by CBS On Mogul as one of “15 Female Artists You Need to Know from Miami Art Week”. And over the past few summers she has hosted “Stieber Summer Gallery”, an interactive pop up art gallery in San Diego. In this episode, we discuss... In this week’s Culturecast: Border art. Though Trump’s aggressive border policies provoked an international conversation that lasted throughout 2017, for many of those involved, the border remains just a faraway political concept. For the Californians and Mexicans who live near it, though, the border is a very real place. That was driven home throughout the year as local and foreign artists used the border as a canvas on which they expressed opinions about Trump’s policies. 2017 has been a busy year for artist making work at or about the international border fence. I asked three local artists and curators to join me to talk about border art in a roundtable discussion. Alessandra Moctezuma, an artist who runs the gallery at San Diego Mesa College and who recently curated the “unDocumenta” border show currently on view at the Oceanside Museum of Art. Jill Holslin, and artist, border activist and teacher at San Diego State University who recently took part in a big border art intervention. And Perry Vasquez, a professor at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, the director of the art gallery there, and an artist who’s made iconic border art and curated shows by border artists.
