Is it even possible to separate the politics and issues with the IOC from the games themselves. Don't we owe our nations athletes, who have dedicated so much blood sweat and tears to the pursuit of their dreams, our support? Is it just too complicated to separate the athletics from everything else? Elliott and Jordan debate all of that and more in Topic 2. Topic 3: (45:00) Canadian Olympic Bobsledder Alysia Rissling joins Jordan to discuss the Olympics, her career and what it takes to become and Olympian. She talks about the sport of Bobsleigh and her journey to where she is today. The essence of an entrepreneur is to recognize a problem, realize you're the best person to solve it, then get to work solving it. With the amazing work he has done over the last decade with Classroom Champions, Steve Mesler is a great example of one such entrepreneur. Despite bringing home a gold medal for the USA in the 2012 Winter Olympics, former Olympic bobsledder Stever Mesler jokes that his job consisted of "running hard for a few seconds then sitting for a minute". He tells us how he went from an injury-filled track career in college to making the US Olympic Bobsled team. So how did he translate that Olympic experience into building an international non-profit, serving thousands of schools and tens of thousands of K-8 students? The Game Plan co-host Jay Kapoor dives into all aspects of building Classroom Champions with Steve Mesler and uncovers why sports is such an important construct to teach life-long lessons to young students. The winter Olympics were held in Innsbruck, Austria, from January 29 to February 9, 1964.  In the two-man bobsled, the greatest driver in the world was Eugenio Monti from Italy.  Eugenia just ended his last run in with an incredible time. There was only one team left. Nobody was going to beat the Italians.  The last team was from Great Britain with Tony Nash as the driver. Tony was good but nobody was going to beat the great Eugenio Monti’s time.  At the end of the course Eugenio Monti's team was celebrating.  Part of Tony Nash's sled was broken. And he can’t take his last run.  And Eugenio Monti said “Which part?” And the guy told him.  Tony Nash had the exact same sled, so Eugenio Monti detached the part from his sled, sent it up to the top of the course and Tony Nash attached it to his sled. Nash took his last run, and won.  Eugenio Monti didn’t want to win because somebody had an defected sled.  He wanted his best to be against Tony Nash’s best, and he lost.  Four years later Monti won We’re still telling this story because that was one of the great stories of sportsmanship of all time. And because of that Monti won the Pierre de Coubertin Sportsmanship Award, which is very rarely given out.  It's only been given out a few times in the history of the Olympic Games. What about you? Are you in it to win it at all cost?

Key Links:  Instagram: @wattwinston Twitter: @wwatt4 Facebook ___ Laura chats with four-time Olympic bobsledder from Jamaica, Winston Watts, on this week’s episode of the podcast. Not a far cry from “Cool Runnings”, Winston was recognized as a stellar athlete in the army and was given the opportunity to try out for the bobsled team. Shortly after excelling at all of the physical tests, he packed up and relocated to Wyoming where he experienced his first winter, first actual bobsled track, and first moments of considering giving up.  His determination to persevere led him to four Olympics and gave him the endurance to forge ahead even when all odds were against him. The spirit of the Jamaican bobsled team has been evident at the Olympics for several decades; the underdog story of a Caribbean team at the Winter Games with contagious positivity never gets old.  In 2010, Winston came out of retirement to help the struggling team return to the 2012 Games in Sochi after missing several years due to funding that inhibited their ability to qualify. He used personal money, favors from friends, and his charisma to spread the plight of the under-resourced team to the entire world. Their training, visas, equipment, flights, and experience was crowd-sourced from New York to Abu Dhabi. Winston has always been committed to spreading goodness and encouragement to whomever he meets and his story of commitment and optimism is a bright light in what can be a cut-throat industry.  Learn more here: http://www.hopesports.org/jamaican-olympic-bobsledder-winston-watts For further information about trips with Hope Sports visit www.hopesports.org.  For more about our host, visit www.laurawilkinson.com and follow her on Facebook and Instagram.  ___ Produced by Simpler Media

Episode 319 Johnny Quinn is an author and speaker who went from NFL football player to Olympic bobsledder.  He is the author of the book "PUSH: Breaking Through the Barriers" which was released in February of 2018.  In college, Johnny was a wide receiver with North Texas, where he was a member of 3 Sun Belt Conference championship teams, ultimately being inducted into the North Texas Hall of Fame in 2011. Cut three times from NFL teams, Johnny lost 2.6 million dollars in NFL contracts and blew out his knee. Then he became an Olympian for the United States of America. Johnny is just the third person ever to have played in the NFL and have competed in the Winter Olympics. (Herschel Walker/Jeremy Bloom were the others) On this episode of the podcast, we talk with Johnny about his crazy journey from football to bobsledding, becoming a new Dad, his pursuit of an NFL career, the viral moment at the Olympics (it's not what you think), and what it looks like to stand for Christ and live unashamed for Him.  For more, log on to http://SportsSpectrum.com

Key Links: Women’s Sports Foundation Instagram: @elanameyerstaylor Twitter: @eamslider24 ___ Elana Meyers Taylor is now the President of the Women’s Sports Foundation, a 3 time Olympic bobsledder, a decorated international competitor, and was the first American woman to race in mixed gender fourman bobsled competition. But it wasn’t an unobstructed path to the top. At one point, Elana was an Olympic hopeful in softball. Having played at the collegiate level for George Washington University, she dreamed of playing professionally. But one horrible try out and not only was her softball career over, but her Olympic dreams were toast. Until she discovered bobsled. On a whim she wrote to the coach, was given a try out, and a few months later found herself at the top of the run at the Olympic Trials. Weeks later she raced in Vancouver and took bronze. Since then she has won gold in World Championships, medaled in two more Olympics, married a fellow bobsledder, and even competed for the National Women’s Rugby Sevens team. Faced with Olympic disappointment and an achilles injury, Elana has learned to value the journey and experiences more than the outcome. She chooses to see bobsled as an aspect of her gifts, not the whole of them and serves with the Women’s Sports Foundation to advocate for equality and support for young girls in sports around the world.   Learn more here: https://www.hopesports.org/redeeming-dreams-after-mistakes For further information about trips with Hope Sports visit www.hopesports.org.   For more about our host, visit www.laurawilkinson.com and follow her on Facebook and Instagram.   ___ Produced by Simpler Media

Although Russia is banned by the International Olympic Committee, it's athletes are not. Something seems to have changed within the IOC because this kind of decision would have never happened before. The question does still remain, why would Russia do something like this on such a large scale for an athletics competition? Are the Olympics just about sport? Guest: Bob Barney, Founder of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at Western University-Though it's pretty much common knowledge that the IOC has banned Russia but when it was first discovered that Russia had a large scale doping program for its Olympic athletes, athletes like Jesse Lumsden were outraged and rightly so. Scott recounts his interview with Lumsden and just how much hard work Lumsden has to put in for the smallest of gains.- The Auditor General's Report has been released and it's nothing short of crazy when you hear about the things that the government has been spending your taxes on. 1 in every 6 buildings owned by the government of Ontario is empty, SCUBA gear, car washes and raccoon traps are among the weirdest and most unnecessary things that our government has spent our money on. Could there be a legitimate reason why taxpayer's money was spent on raccoon traps? Guest: Alan Carter, Global News Anchor-Doesn't TV do such a good job at showing what it's like to be a homicide detective out on a case? No, it doesn't so then how is a real life homicide case handled? What are the steps that need to be taken and can you really get a murderer's DNA from a drop of blood in 20 minutes? Guest: Rick Arnold, Retired Hamilton Police Department Homicide Detective -The Blue Jays are reportedly on sale right now after it slipped out during an interview a few days ago. If this is true, who will buy the Blue Jays? Scott caught up with Bubba O'Neil to talk about what his thoughts are on the idea of the Blue Jays being sold. Do you think that Rogers should sell the Blue Jays or keep them? Guest: Bubba O'Neil, Sports Anchor at CHCH
