Today we tackle a super hot topic in the world of manual therapy, chiropractic, and honestly, every social media platform you look at. Does manual therapy matter? Should we just make all our patients get out and move regardless of their symptoms? Does precision matter in rehab? Should we only be doing things in the treatment room that are purely ‘evidence-based'? Some of these questions are legit questions with our biases of MDT, DNS, etc. But, as you will hear in the episode, let's not jump ship on our manual techniques. We could not of chosen a better guest to discuss this with than Dr. Richard Ulm. You may know Dr. Ulm from the Athlete Enhancement podcast, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization courses, his Instagram ‘move sessions,' or his food and wine pics throughout social media. He is also a recurring guest on this podcast! Not only is he a former athlete, but he has also worked with some of the strongest people on earth and some incredible athletes. In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Jackson Clark, who is an osteopath for professional athletes. Jackson discussed how his career as an osteopathic practitioner begin and developed. He chatted about some of the principles of osteopathic treatments and how to scale them to practical self care methods. We discussed the rehab, training, prehab continuum and how to successfully transition from injury back to training and performance optimization. Jackson is an osteopath and strength and conditioning coach who has worked with professional athletes. In 2012, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Science from Victoria University in Australia, and in 2014, he earned a Master of Osteopathic Medicine from the same institution. In addition to his osteopathic studies, Jackson graduated from his Masters of Strength and Conditioning degree at Edith Cowan University by 2021. His education process and experience have developed his holistic movement-based approach to the human body incorporating both traditional osteopathic table-based skills and gym-based applications of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to achieve individual health and performance results. Once upon a time the prevailing thought was that athletes should AVOID lifting weights because adding muscle would reduce their athletic ability (seriously). The major reason why football players did two-a-day practices and baseball players had weeks of spring training was to get in playing shape for their respective sports. Now in 2021 professional athletes follow year-round conditioning programs and most high school athletes receive better strength and conditioning coaching than professional and collegiate athletes did as recently as the 1990s. Bobby Congalton is one of the founders of 1RM Performance, an athletic conditioning facility located in sunny, suburban San Diego. After he received his MS in Exercise Science and Nutrition from San Diego State University, Bobby started working almost exclusively with high school baseball players to help them become stronger and more powerful for their sport. Bobby applies the science of Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization to first help his athletes move better; and once they move better he uses the conjugated method of training created by Louie Simmons, the founder of the Westside Barbell Club, to help them become stronger and more explosive. The results are amazing; Bobby has helped a number of athletes progress from playing in high school to competing on a college team. In addition, he has helped some make the transition to playing at the professional level. On this episode of All About Fitness, Bobby talks about what got him interested in being a performance coach, how he uses the conjugated method help his athletes succeed and his secret for identifying whether or not an athlete has what it takes to compete at the highest level of his or her sport. This is fun, fast-paced and informative conversation about the science of athletic performance. To learn more about Bobby and 1RM Performance, follow THIS LINK to visit their online home. This week, I sit for a second time with Dr. Michael Rintala. Dr. Rintala is a chiropractor specializing in chiropractic sports medicine and rehabilitation. He’s also an international instructor for the Prague School of Rehabilitation who uses the principles of Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) to help his patients recover from injury and improve their performance. Since DNS works by training the body to tap into the movement patterns that we learn instinctively as infants, we talk about the stages of movement that babies go through as they grow. As well as discussing developmental kinesiology and explaining how DNS helps improve stability and mobility, Dr. Rintala describes some of the simple mouth breathing techniques he teaches to align the diaphragm. To round off our discussion, we get into the health and performance benefits of kettlebell training, and Michael talks about his upcoming course on the Czech Get-Up, which begins on the 20th of April.Support the show (https://www.coachjoedi.com/joe-recommends )

Today Doug Sauer and Sheila Mahler have on the show, a very special guest from Brisbane Australia Ryan Craig.Ryan grew up in Brisbane Australia, in a baptist family. He had a relationship with God that He took for granted and didn't fully apprehend when younger. He Showed little interest in adolescent years and came to a personal faith in his university years. Ryan began attending a Pentecostal church at that point (2014), where he was introduced to a spiritual reality within Christianity. Ryan attended Australian Catholic University for my bachelor of physiotherapy, graduated in 2016. Ryan and a friend of his started an on campus church called Alive ACU during his studies. He has pursued ongoing learning since graduating quite intensely. Ryan was drawn to private practice and began my career with a goal to identify a biblical approach to physiotherapy. He quotes, God has tempered me a lot since then/over 3 years of practice. I am not as dogmatic as I was, hopefully still as zealous.Ryan's university training was largely biomedical, and in practice he felt this limited therapeutic potential. He quotes, A biblical worldview tells us that ‘we are more than just the sum of the parts' (therefore we are gestalt) - and so manipulating and modifying the parts on there own i felt was not the most optimal approach to therapy (or development, or performance).DNS focuses on global movement patterns to rehabilitate function and in doing so, improved pain and injury. He feel's this is a better approach, make the tree good and the fruit will be good too.A message ryan would like to share is - God can provide wisdom to reform the professions, DNS is a good tool for this within physiotherapy. There is a moral imperative we are neglecting in the movement professions. Movement has a spiritual and moral component. I think about how I loved to see Ken Griffey Jr swing a bat so I attempted to model my at bats around what he did… I mean he was great right?! Brett says that each person has the idea mechanics for them… currently at the younger levels our kids are being taught to pitch in a way that verifies the spikes in UCL injuries.
