The Surgical Education & Training (SET) One-Year scholarship that Dr Jamie-Lee Rahiri received is an opportunity she says to help continue her passion to promote health equity among Indigenous people, particularly among the Maori and Pacifika community of Aotearoa New Zealand. That passion is exemplified by many things she's done, including her PhD research, which focused on investigating equity in access to bariatric surgery for Māori, and also understanding how health benefits could be optimised for Māori post-surgery.Having a safe and supportive workplace – that's inclusive of everyone – is an important step, she says, for the greater good of patients. Support the show

Pharmac says it will strengthen its focus on equity for Maori and other population groups, as a result of the government's independent review. That review, released back in June, found Pharmac had issues on accountability, decision-making, and responsibilities. It also said the benefits the model brings needs to be shared more equitably across Maori and Pacifika. Sarah Fitt, Pharmac's Chief Executive, says “Part of the recommendations from the Pharmac review is that we need to focus more on achieving health equity. I think that goes right across the health sector.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pripovedovanje njegove zgodbe bom povezal s slovenskimi svetniškimi kandidati: z dr. Antonom Strletom, škofom Janezom Gnidovcem, škofom Friderikom Barago, nadškofom Antonom Vovkom in duhovnikom Andrejem Majcnom.

Synopsis The British poet Rudyard Kipling wrote: ‘Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.’ But on today’s date in 1963, East DID meet West at the premiere performance of a musical work by the American composer Lou Harrison, titled “Pacifika Rondo Written for an Orchestra of Western and Oriental Instruments" at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii. For Lou Harrison, it was just one more stop on a journey he had begun decades earlier. In the spring of 1935, when he was still a teenager, Lou Harrison had enrolled in a course entitled “Music of the Peoples of the World” at the University of California extension in San Francisco. The course was taught by the American composer Henry Cowell, who became Harrison’s composition teacher. Cowell urged his pupils to explore non-Western musical traditions and forms. Javanese gamelan music became a big influence in Harrison’s music, and, in 1961-62, a Rockefeller Foundation grant made it possible for him to study Asian music in Korea. The movements of Harrison’s “Pacifika Rondo” refer to various sections of the Pacific Basin. “In composing Pacifika Rondo,” wrote Harrison, “I have thought, with love, around the circle of the Pacific.” Music Played in Today's Program Lou Harrison (1917 – 2003) Pacifica Rondo Oakland Youth Orchestra; Robert Hughes, cond. Yuki Kihara's reaction to being chosen to represent Aotearoa/New Zealand in the 2021 Venice Biennale was to scream at the top of her lungs. But with it came a huge sense of responsibility: "If I f**k this up, then people like me won't get a chance anymore." An interdiscplinary artist of Japanese and Sāmoan descent, Kihara has hit a lot of firsts in her international career — a show at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the first Pacifika and Asian artist to represent Aotearoa at the Biennale. Always, her cinematic photography, dance, installation and curatorship seeks to challenge the dominant historical narratives and explore intersecting identities and experiences. Plus, step inside the world of Terminus, a series of virtual reality installations inspired by sci fi and fantasy comics and movies. And the 'deceptively simple' art of Miffy, the bunny grounded in ideas of 20th century avant-garde design.

A spokesperson for the police says officers taking photos of youths on the street do so "with the best of intentions". It has been revealed police have been approaching youths, taking their photos and using an app to send them to a national database. One officer RNZ spoke to said frontline officers would be strongly encouraged to talk to groups of young people if they spotted them on the street. Chris de Wattignar, the NZ police Assistant Commissioner for Iwi & Communities, who is leading the police's internal review into the policy of taking photos of young people, told Morning Report he wants feedback from the community about the practice and will act upon it. "I think our staff are acting with the best of intentions and it's on us to ensure that our guidance keeps them and our communities safe," he said. Asked whether the practice had systemically targeted Māori or Pacific people De Wattignar said the database had a "relatively colourblind approach". "The stories that you've heard are clearly coming from Pacific or Māori families, I don't deny that, but I don't believe that there's a systemic approach to taking notings from Pacifika and Māori people."
Within the mental health space, sharing experiences is a powerful way to showcase support, while inspiring others to know they are not alone in their struggles. Committed to creating greater connected communities is this week's podcast guests, The Blackbutterfly Group. Janice Elia, Tapu & Joe Fuiava are a trio of Pasifika people from a Samoan and Tongan heritage, born and raised in New Zealand, and currently residing in Brisbane. Tapu and Janice are sisters and both work in specialised community mental health services, while Joe works with children in crisis. Amongst themselves, many deep discussions were had about personal challenges, as well as what was happening to family and friends, from poor relationships, mental illness to suicide. Knowing others must feel the same, they felt there must be a way to connect to people – and thus, The Blackbutterfly Group was born. Aiming to create hopeful & growth mindsets in people through the process of storytelling, Blackbutterfly is a regular 'talanoa' host. A 'talanoa' is a cultural process, enabling people to come together to connect, share wisdom, impart wisdom, grow empathy and find a way forward through the art of storytelling. Throughout each 'talanoa', Blackbutterfly or community members will nominate a topic ranging from Hope to Suicide and as a group, will pose a few questions to help anchor the ensuing conversations. Listen in as I meet with Tapu to talk about their experiences with mental health, the art of the 'talanoa', and what they hope to achieve in the mental health space.
Founders of a "ground-breaking" new app launching in Auckland today are promising to put New Zealand on the map for providing the best healthcare in the world. It comes after reports of a looming healthcare crisis with nearly half of the country's GPs expected to retire in the next eight years. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit New Zealand, there have also been multiple reports from health experts saying people are too scared to visit see a doctor. The new digitally-led medical service dubbed Tend, coined from the word 'attention' - to patients and families, hopes to combat that burden by offering virtual and in-clinic consults, immediate access to medical notes, e-perceptions and follow up messaging with qualified doctors. It's the brainchild of Cecilia and James Robinson, the founders of My Food Bag, alongside top public health doctor Mataroria Lyndon and Pushpay's Josh Robb. For the last 18 months the team have developing a service they believe could be the best in the world.Lyndon, Tend's clinical director, said it was more than just video calling, it's the beginning of a transformation in the way primary health care services are delivered in Aotearoa."For too long, primary health care has been designed to work around the health system and not always what works best for patients. This has prevented too many people and whanau from being able to access healthcare when they needed to," Lyndon said.He said this service, which they hope to eventually roll out nationally, would benefit all New Zealanders, especially Maori and Pacifika communities who overall face more barriers to see a GP. It will be available in Te Reo.From today patients can choose a GP or nurse that suits their needs and who they feel they would be most likely to connect with, Lyndon said. There is currently a team of 12 doctors and nurses to choose from but it's hoped that number will expand as the service grows. The company's co-CEO Cecilia Robinson said as a parent she had experienced the frustrating long waits at a GP clinic first hand, and it was part of the reason for developing the app."We want it to be like an uber experience, where you book and pay via the app."Enrolled patients would get their first appointment and repeat prescriptions for free.Community Service Card holders who are enrolled with the service would be seen for $13. For causal patients it would cost $49. Casual repeat prescriptions are charged at only $19.Following registration, users would be able to book a digital appointment with a GP of their choice between 7am – 9pm Monday - Friday, or 8.30am – 4.30pm on the weekend. While many medical needs would be available through virtual consult patients would still need to book in-clinic appointments at Tend's Kingsland clinic for some services. That's something they will be able to do with the touch of a button.Robinson said the app will help combat the looming healthcare crisis because it would allow patients from parts of the country without doctors to have access, and also attract retired medical professionals to re-enter the workforce because they can work from home. The app will also save patients time because they will be waiting at home, rather than in a clinic."As a country, we know we can do better. With advances in technology, we shouldn't be expecting people to have to take time off work, travel across town and sit in a waiting room worried about getting sick for a routine medical appointment," she said."We are going to continue working so hard to make New Zealanders the healthiest people in the world."Text by Emma Russell, NZ Herald
Meet Heimana Tahiata.Co-Founder and Co-Director of Heilani Polynesian School of Arts and Heilani Productions. From travelling the globe with Polynesian performance groups, Heimana Tahiata with his wife and fellow directors Leilani Tahiata and Fati & Waiana Tagata hhave spent the past eleven years bringing a touch of home to the Maori and Pacifika communities around Brisbane and the Gold Coast.the Heilani Polynesian School of Arts draws from the combined heritage and knowledge of their seasoned directors making them well versed to teach classes in Maori, Samoan, The Cook Islands and Tongan, as well as Tahitian and Hawaiian performance. The launch of their new Heilani website "where you will be able to join us from anywhere in the world for Pacific Dance, Fitness, Music, Arts/Crafts, Costume Making, etc!" adds a new dimension to their business with cultural dance lessons, breakdowns and new content added weekly, discussion forums and more, this is your chance to find out about your own Pacific heritage or learn something new!Heimana, grew up surrounded by culture and the performing arts. His mother was a member of the showband, 'The Maori Volcanics' and his father, one of Tahiti's best dancers. It wasn't until looking back at his life globetrotting with his parents surrounded by Polynesian performers and entertainers that he realised the incredible impact these showfolk had on him. He learnt by example how to be a professional performer and how your connection to culture can create a life in the arts. "That is what I want arts people to know. For us, what we do is more than just an artform. It goes so much deeper because you're talking about a people and a culture not just a dance. People can learn a modern dance and have no connect. With our people and with our artforms there is a connection because that art is actually a part of who we are and that is just as important as the artform and that's the difference and what makes us different from others!"Website: www.heilani.comFacebook: @heilaniproductionsInstagram: @heilaniproductions

Potovanja z letali, vlaki, ladjami in avtomobili so ta čas sicer res nemogoča, toda naš duh še vedno lahko prosto vandra po zemeljski obli. S knjigo. Sodobni avstrijski pisatelj namreč v sveže prevedenem Atlasu rahločutnega moškega v 70 kratkih, avtobiografskih zapisih obišče 70 destinacij – od eksotičnih do najbolj vsakdanjih, od neobljudenih skalnatih otočkov, izgubljenih sredi razburkane modrine Pacifika, do prikupno zaspanih mestec v alpskem predgorju – in pozorno opazuje svet. Zakaj?
V oddaji Kulturni fokus bodo o pomenu in idealizaciji očeta britanske socialne antropologije, njegovem odkritju do tedaj še neznanih načinov življenja v Melaneziji ter o njegovem stoletnem odmevu v humanistiki, govorili dr. Rajko Muršič, dr. Peter Simonič in podiplomslka študentka Nežka Struc.
