Gold Nuggets in this Episode: Juliet was stressed out by planning and organizing Steve's birthday dinner. Steve doesn't recall being stressed at all – he does, however, remember the good wine. “If I were to crystalize what I consider to be my most important challenge, it was the ability to do what my parents did for me – to provide that unbelievable education in a way that I never knew if things were good or bad for them.” “Whether it's more profitable or not is not always the issue. Sometimes doing the right thing is how we define success.” “One of the keys to the success of successful businesses is you must always be evolving and innovating, and you cannot stand still if you hope to still be in business in 5, 10, or 15 years from now.” “You better love what you're doing, because you're going to be doing it for a lot more hours than the typical person who gets up, goes to work, and comes home.” “Living and dying by what you do at your workplace is a very fulfilling way to live your life, providing you don't measure your success by the success of what you're trying to do.” “The biggest investment you'll ever make in your life is in the people that you surround yourself with as the business becomes something that requires others.” “If you have nothing you'd do differently, you haven't tried hard enough.” “The best lessons you ever learn are the ones where you lose money, because you'll never forget it.” “Every single one of your employees is in your marketing department, whether they know it or not. They're all marketing your company, and they all carry your reputation with everything they do every day.” “If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.” – Milton Berle Our guest is Jeff Paikin, President and Co-Founder of New Horizon Development Group. I first met Rabbi Jesse Paikin, a rabbinic Fellow at the Sixth and I synagogue in downtown Washington, D.C., at the Good Soul services during this year’s High Holidays. I’m sure I’m not the only Jewish geek who attends services to hear the rabbi’s sermon, and the one Rabbi Jesse gave about the story of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry did not disappoint.I stopped by Rabbi Jesse’s office in Chinatown at lunchtime where I had the opportunity to ask him about his background and about that sermon. Our conversation occurred a week or so before the tragic shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and while all of us are still processing that horrific event as well as the many, many gestures of support and solidarity throughout our communities, Rabbi Jesse’s words and especially his perspective on free will offer signs of hope, I think, for the future.

There is no worse cancer in a free society than the thuggish impulse to equate dissent as disloyalty... The greatest patriot is the person with the courage to be the lone voice in the crowd crying out that the Emperor has no clothes. The test of our society's democratic nature is our instinct to value the right of our fellow human beings to disagree with us.

Gandhi and Bose were brothers in the hunger for justice, and both had followers who were willing to die for freedom rather than live as slaves. But one group was so blinded by passion for its cause, that it was willing to join hands with regimes whose very names have become bywords for evil in almost every spoken language on the planet.

Throughout our history, Canada has grown through the toil of generations of Canadians who were inspired by the belief that our country is free of the rigid class systems of the Old World, that Canadians' success or failure depends on our own efforts and our own abilities...But in recent years, we have come to doubt our faith in this meritocracy.

In any democracy worthy of the name, it is not merely the right, but the responsibility of every citizen to resist unjust laws... but there is a contrast between making a scene, and making a difference. There is a choice between the comfort of self-righteous illusion, and the peril of self-sacrificing commitment. There is a hard journey between railing against unjust laws, and living out a life that models justice.

Videocast of my televised essay for TVOntario's The Agenda with Steve Paikin, on Canada's role in Afghanistan: Our ability to successfully conclude the mission and effect an honourable departure is being prejudiced by an ignominious political retreat from the truth: the truth about why we went to Afghanistan in the first place and what we are actually trying to achieve there... I fear that the current government is unwilling to engage in an honest national debate about our objectives in Afghanistan, because it believes that Canadians prefer easy lies to hard truths. But Canadians are not the fools or the cowards that such politicians take us for.
