Some theatre people constantly surprise you, and their names alone can spur you to buy a ticket. Sheridan Harbridge is one such artist. She blew audiences away in Suzie Miller's Prima Facie, and she's now a writer or director on four upcoming productions: My Brilliant Career, Life in Plastic, A Model Murder and Phar Lap: The Musical. Also, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs pay tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein in Showstoppers, and more than 40 years after the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires, a community revisits the ordeal on stage in a play called Ash Wednesday. It will be read by Shane Jacobson, Pia Miranda and community members at this year's Mountain Festival.

Growing up, actor Pia Miranda would spend her weekday afternoons watching footy and drinking green cordial with her Irish-Australian grandparents. On weekends, she'd be baking and enduring exorcisms with her Sicilian Nonna. The Looking for Alibrandi star chats with Lizzy Hoo about how her grandparents' stories shaped her life, holding onto tradition, and how attitudes to Italians in Australia have changed over the generations.
For more than twenty-five years, Pia Miranda has been a household name, gracing screens big and small with her talent. From her iconic role in Looking for Alibrandi, she's also won Survivor, sung in a mask, danced with the stars, had two children with a husband she adores, and released her memoir Finding My Bella Vita. In this episode of Three Food Memories, Pia opens up about her experiences on set, from being pushed as a young actor to creating a safe space for those fresh to the industry. She also shares an “interesting” two-ingredient salad recipe, the origins of her surprising love of Melbourne Bitter, and fond memories of lining up with cousins à la Oliver Twist for her Nanna's lamb shank soup. Pia's social cause is Dolly's Dream, because as she says “Not everyone has the capacity to be resilient, what we should do is change our behaviour so everyone can feel included.”Find out more about Dolly's Dream and Do it for Dolly Day here: dollysdream.org.auProduced and edited by Lauren McWhirterMusic by Russell TorranceTo find out more about the project and Savva - head to threefoodmemories.comInsta - @savvasavasEmail us at threefoodmemories@plated.com.au, we'd love to hear from you!

“You know, for me, I loved reading, but I didn't exist on those pages and when a child of any age doesn't exist in our mainstream, in our books, in our stories, they start believing they're not important.” – Melina Marchetta Looking for Alibrandi broke new ground with its honest and empowered portrait of an Italian-Australian teen coming of age in 1990s inner Sydney, speaking authentically about systemic racism in Australia from a migrant perspective. For generations of teens, the beloved novel (and later cult movie) is a foundational story. Its exploration of family, womanhood, first love, identity and othering still resonates with readers today, 30 years after its release. Now, Melina Marchetta's novel has been adapted for the stage. In this special collaboration between the Wheeler Centre and Malthouse Theatre, Marchetta joined playwright Vidya Rajan, director Stephen Nicolazzo, and the film's star Pia Miranda to discuss Looking for Alibrandi's journey from page to screen to stage, the art of adaptation, and the enduring impact of this Australian classic. This conversation was hosted by Brodie Lancaster and recorded at the Malthouse Theatre on 18 July 2022. The bookseller was Hill of Content Bookshop. Today on the podcast I have the latest unmasked celebrity from 'Channel Ten's' 'The Masked Singer Australia' and this guest has been in our cinemas and on our TV screens for decades. It's 'Pia Miranda!'While the thong was an unusual choice for the pint sized Australian actor, it was a great disguise because no one seem to guess who was behind the mask. I thought 'Bindi Irwin,' 'Carla Bonner' and so many other celebs that somehow I missed all the clues that matched with one of my favourite Australian stars. I have loved Pia's unpredictable at times but consistent career from 'Looking for Alibrandi,' 'Secret Life of Us,' 'Wentworth' to 'Australian Survivor.' There is so many iconic TV twists and turns in Pia's career. We will talk about a return to 'Australia Survivor,' what song she had planned next from 'Bachelor Girl,' what her family thought of her secret involvement on the show and I will get the backstory to her famous role as 'Joise Alibrandi.' Talk about dream podcast guest! If you're anything like me, chances are you watched Looking for Alibrandi growing up. Pia won an AFI award for best lead actress for her role as Josephine Alibrandi. I had this movie on DVD and the soundtrack on CD too, so you can imagine how nervous I was going into this interview. More recently I've watched Pia on Wentworth and Mustangs FC. She's also done a bunch of theatre acting too. I love that Pia opened up about acting and her process, we talked about different acting techniques, i was like a kid in a candy shop. Of course I couldn't interview Pia Miranda without asking about Survivor; Pia won Survivor, that's 50 days in Fiji slogging it out, facing her fears to win the title. After the pod Pia asked if i wanted to smell her Survivor gear, i was like sure thing, spoiler alert it literally smells like jungle. Pia is open, kind and caring. I hope you love this interview as much as I do, it was an honour to sit down with the talented Pia Miranda. In episode 76 of The C-Word we chat with Luke Toki, a former contestant from Australian Survivor (2017) and Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders (2019). In 2017, he was known for his humorous confessionals and witty personality, as well as his close bond with eventual winner Jericho Malabonga. In 2019, Luke returned as "the people's champion" on the Champions tribe. During the game's later stages, Luke became the consensus target due to his impressive resume, but a string of Individual Immunity staved off elimination. After spearheading a particularly memorable blindside of Abbey, he was unable to win immunity at the final four and was eliminated after Pia Miranda chose not to force a tie at Tribal Council. This Mining Tech, husband and father of 3 who hails from Baldivis won hearts across the nation and we've finally managed to get him in TCW studio with us today! Brenna and Joe dedicate a lot of time discussing the novel's handling of John Barton and his suicide, how it doesn't work nearly as well in the film, and the need for happy endings. Pia Miranda has a cracker of a year. Until recently, she was best known for her starring role as Josephine in the cult Australian coming-of-age film 'Looking For Alibrandi' where she played a schoolgirl. She's worked solidly for the past 20 years since then as an actress and voiceover artist and she's had two kids. But in early 2019, Pia received an email that would change her and her family's life. It was an invitation to be on Australian Survivor, the reality show where you get dropped on a deserted island and you have to....survive, via a series of physically and mentally grueling challenges, with almost no food. At 46 years old and far from a professional athlete, Pia played hard. Hard enough to win. And what happened next came as a brutal shock, on that she's still trying to process. Pia Miranda was named queen of Survivor last night so NNS joined her for a chat this morning. She gave it all she had and managed to take home the title. She’s going to catch up with Luke Toki soon after she cut his journey short the night before and how hard it was keeping the secret of winning from her family. A car was stopped on the road in Darwin due to a large number of crocodiles blocking the cross way. The guys heard from people who saw something on the road. Kim was stopped by a rogue emu in the metro area, Dani was attacked by a group of slow moving turtles and Kayla found her dad in the middle of the road…And Shaun thought he misplaced his wallet yesterday at the swimming pool – turns out he had left it at home on the kitchen bench. NNS spoke to people who realised they were losing their minds. Ash was telling her friend about a mass murder – it was infact a Law and Order episode and Anita left her keys in the car for a VERY long time. Order yourself a cappuccino and grab a seat in the good room, because it's time to talk about the quintessential coming-of-age novel (and according to Laura, "the greatest piece of Australian literature ever written") Looking for Alibrandi, by Melina Marchetta. Serving up complex characters, multigenerational stories and a PAINFULLY accurate depiction of what it feels like to be a teen, there's a reason this book is a classic. Let's find out if it's as good as Laura and Fiona remember, if Ben can get on board as a first-time reader, and whether Pia Miranda ever agreed to watch the movie with us (hi, Pia, we love you). PLUS find out what we're reading in April. ----- Tell us what you think about the book! Or the podcast! Or if you've ever broken someone's nose with a science book! We are @bookwhostalking on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Goodreads. And you can email us at bookwhostalking.podcast@gmail.com.
