Since her last appearance on the podcast in 2020, the landscape of digital consumption in China has evolved significantly, and Olivia is here to shed light on the latest trends and platforms shaping the Chinese market. Olivia kicks off the discussion by updating listeners on the shifts in consumer behavior and the emergence of new marketing platforms. The conversation zooms in on Xiaohongshu, a platform that, while hugely popular in China, remains relatively unknown to many Western audiences. Photographer and Paris blogger, founder of Everyday Parisian, Rebecca Plotnick joins me on today's episode to talk about traveling to Paris during the time of Covid. Travelers are gradually beginning to make travel plans abroad, and as Rebecca traveled to Paris this past October, I invited her on the show to share her experience as well as assuage travelers who may wonder exactly how to meet the requirements for testing and proof of vaccination. This past August, Rebecca shared a detailed Q & A here on the blog during TSLL's Annual French Week; however, I purposely waited for her to join the podcast until after she returned from Paris as I wanted her to talk specifically about what travelers can expect and thus prepare for as they step back on plans to visit the City of Light. I recently read that Paris is the #4 destination American travelers have booked flights to for their summer 2022 travels, and as you will hear in our conversation, while visiting any time of year is wonderful, visiting in spring may be quite a special time to take in the natural beauty as well as the other sites and favorite tastes of a city so many TSLL readers love. ~NOTE: Since the recording of this episode, France as updated their requirement of a proof of vaccination (US Embassy for France) (French (French website - in English). You will need to secure a Vaccine Pass, but their online site is temporarily unusable. Currently what you can do, is as soon as you arrive in Paris, visit a local pharmacy, and for $40, show them your proof of vaccination (CDC card), as well as your passport, and you will be able to attain the necessary health pass to ensure access to all of the sites you came to Paris to see. ~Explore all French-Inspired episodes from the podcast here ~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #322 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube | Spotify | Amazon Music

Once I started cooking more regularly and upping my culinary game I noticed that more and more people with similar interests began orbiting my universe, and me theirs. And this was definitely the case with the guest on the most recent episode, “For The Love of Cooking” w/ Rebecca Plotnick. Rebecca actually ticks two boxes: a love of cooking and Paris. She lived between Paris and the US for a few years and is currently based in the states, but that hasn't decreased her love of Paris and the French way of life (including the food bien sur). She's the eye behind the beautiful award-winning blog Everyday Parisian where she shares all the lessons she's learned from her time living in Paris and traveling in France. As a true Francophile Rebecca chose sweet potato quiche as her Dinner for One meal, which we cooked together as we chatted about Paris, cooking in Paris, moving to Paris, the magic of Paris, pretty much everything Paris, quoi. WeChat had 1.08 B users in 2018 with a number of 620 million daily users, in other words, WeChat has a reach of 91% in China. So it is clear that you want to stand out from the competition. What special methods there are and how we learn in the field of marketing in China is explained to us by our special guest Olivia Plotnick, who is an expert in this field. She has gained a lot of insights in Chinese marketing through her approach to error and trial, which is why she shares these insights with Forbes and Jing Daily and with whom she also advises her clients. In today's episode, we will talk about the various trends and approaches to marketing positioning in China. As well as what it means to use WeChat with its mini programs and how to build a user centric marketing strategy. Enjoy!
The gang discusses two papers that look at the human impact on the fossil record. The first paper runs multiple model studies to try and determine when hominines (the group that includes all of our ancestors) first began significantly impacting the biosphere. The second paper estimates what our future fossil record may look like by using the state of Michigan as a model system (much to Amanda’s delight). Meanwhile, Amanda attempts to train a cat, Curt and James invent the best machine, James has his mind blown, and everyone wonders what the “prepper layer” of the Anthropocene will look like in a few million years. Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): Our friends talk about how people have changed the world. First, they talk about how big brains might have led to lost of animals dying. This first paper looks at how brains got larger in the great great great great parents of people over time. They run a lot of numbers in a computer in order to find out if the real big animals that died went away because of people or because of changes in the places where these animals live. They look at how big the brains of these people were, as well as how much rain fell and if there were trees. What they find is that, after running all the numbers, is that the best answer out of all the things they looked at was that these animals started to die when the brains of people got bigger. They think this could mean that the people with bigger brains started to take food from some of these big animals, and that made it harder for these big animals to stay living. The second paper looks at what we will leave behind after people are gone in the rocks. It uses a state that looks like a hand (and which one of our friends really really likes) as a way to look into this. Turns out, people cover things in ground a lot more than would usually happen without people. But people only cover in ground a small number of animals, like people, dogs, cats, and animals that we use on places where we make food. This means that the rocks after we are gone will look very different from the rocks before us. These rocks will be filled with just a few things, and most of those things will probably be in the same position. Also, a lot of the animals will all be men and all will have died for the same reasons. References: Faurby, Søren, et al. Today on The Negotiation, Olivia Plotnick talks about her entry into China as an entrepreneur from the United States. She shares how she was able to grow WeChat accounts at a massive rate in a fast-paced marketplace whose consumer culture is so different from her home country's. She also explains how brands can capitalize on certain WeChat features, such as Top Stories, the “Wow” function, and WeChat groups. When asked how companies should look at WeChat in 2020, Olivia recalls how WeChat gradually transitioned from a purely consumer-based social media platform to a brand-building tool. Before, you could only receive messages from friends and family. Now, Nike and Under Armor can reach out to you. Olivia calls this a “sacred space” in that brands can now develop personal relationships with consumers. This is why it is important for brands to put out relevant content, or risk being unfollowed. In China, there are a large number of social platforms—or what Olivia likes to refer to as “ecosystems”. Olivia prefers to divide these platforms into two different categories. There are eCommerce platforms such as Tmall.com and JD.com, social media platforms such as WeChat, Weibo, and Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok). Each of these two categories serves a different purpose. How does WeChat stand out in this sea of platforms? According to Olivia, while Douyin is an “awareness-building platform”, WeChat is more of a “relationship-building platform”. Many brands use WeChat to educate their audience and provide loyalty programs. Ecommerce platforms like Taobao, on the other hand, are where “you push to sell”. Ultimately, you need to be aware of what most people use the platform for and produce content appropriate to user activity.

Happy New Year! It's another edition of Fuse 8 n' Kate which, at this rate, may be soon renamed The Random Facts About Koalas Show. With today's book Betsy sought out a classic with a strong female protagonist. Kate (and some of you out there) may contest whether or not this engine is, indeed, is the real deal. Our featured act for April was Oliver the Crow, an exciting new duo from Nashville. Kaitlyn Raitz (cello, vocals) and Ben Plotnick (fiddle, vocals) have been making folk music for the majority of their lives. Though they’ve only started playing Folk, Bluegrass, Appalachian and Stringband music together this past year, they have a combined musical resume that speaks to a lifetime of dedication to these styles and more. Individually, they’ve made their respective marks playing with countless artists across North America. From Jazz, to Country, to Classical, and everywhere in between, they’ve appeared on dozens upon dozens of professional albums. They’ve played in bars for 10 people, or at festivals for 40,000. The relationship between the violin and the cello is age-old and has been proven time and time again, but as soon as Kaitlyn and Ben began to play and sing together, it became clear that something was different. Decades of experience as chamber musicians helped them to blend instantly, but it’s their spontaneous, energetic yet subtle approach to folk music that sets them apart. In this episode, the gang celebrates its third year of podcasting by discussing two papers that use the fossil record to determine how our current biodiversity crisis stacks up to past mass extinctions. The gang finally just does what comes naturally and discusses two papers about food. Specifically, one paper on why things aren't tasty and another answering the vital question "what foods in the past would be kosher" (the answer might just surprise you). Meanwhile, Amanda finds her spirit animal, James details our terrifying corporate future, and Curt wants to play a game. TRIGGER WARNING: Mild joking reference to sexual-violence and mascots in the first two minutes. TRIGGER WARNING: We talk about eating meat throughout. Up-goer five simple-speak text: The group talks about two papers that look at food and which animals make good food. The first paper looks at the babies of small animals that have pretty things that let them fly. They find out that the babies that ate things with leaves that made bad food also made bad food themselves and would be ignored by other small animals that tried to eat them. The other paper works out whether animals in the past would have been good food for people that have very few things they can eat. The paper uses different ways of telling what things had to show that these people would not be able to eat most things. References: Dyer, Lee A. "Tasty generalists and nasty specialists? Jack Plotnick's philosophy towards creativity is so spiritually aligned with my own, that I think we might have been separated at birth. I've directed Jack in a few commercials, marveled at his acting chops in films like "Meet The Fockers", "Rubber" and "Gods And Monsters". Then I discovered his directorial debut, the feature film "Space Station 76". Jack and I chat about creating one's own content, setting a date to make it happen, and giving yourself boundaries, a theme that's come up on this show a few times lately. Most of all, Jack rejects the negativity that can hound us in the biz. In his words, "the world is going to rain shit down on you sometimes, but keep going cuz it's also going to give you great gifts along your way." Enjoy and check out "Space Station 76" on iTunes. thank you. Jordan This episode is about an hour and 15 minutes. Rate us on iTunes, btw. Don't know why but that's what the podcast folks tell me to say.

Walter Plotnick is a photo-based artist who lives and works in the Philadelphia area. He received his MFA from University of the Arts and BFA from Tyler School of Art. My current work is a hybrid of wet photography and digital process. I am influenced by the work of Bauhaus, Constructivist and Surrealist Photographers from the 1920s through the 1930s. I make photographs and photograms by constructing temporary still lifes, using vintage found objects and images on top of photographic paper in the darkroom. By manipulating a variety of light sources, then digitally combining, repeating or adding images, I am able to visually explore an abstract environment with objects and light, creating movement, form and tension. http://walterplotnick.com http://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/heartfield/ www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

Nine-to-five, punch the clock, bring home the bacon and all that jazz. Let's face it, work can be such a drag. Finding a job you like can be harder than finding inner peace. Even if you do find a job you love, there's office politics, inter-office drama or a borderline psychopath lurking in a nearby cubicle. In other words, the working life provides plenty of material for another action-packed Nest of Vipers. This week's team of fundits share tales of dishwashing, salmon gutting, international banking and working for a major pant concern. Guests include: Dishwasher Pete Jordan (writer, Dishwasher), Anthony Bedard (musician, Hank IV), Kurt Keppeler (musician, Fierce Antler). Hosted by filmmaker Danny Plotnick.
