Sam Kieffer is hypnotically voiced and thoughtfully spoken Los Angeles resident. He also happens to be a podcast producer at Earwolf, which is why the sound quality of this episode is 100% clearer and 100% less interrupted by Figaro barking. Many of the shows that bricked together my own approach to podcasting have been produced by Earwolf. This includes Professor Blastoff, which Sam spent some time working on. In this episode, we talk about staying grounded and how to avoid getting lost in a city like LA. About The Show:  LA is a city of 4 million spread over 503 miles, 114 neighborhoods and can take over an hour to get from one side to the other. With that many people bumping up against each other, how is it possible to feel alone and isolated. It's a city of paradox: dreams and heartbreak. Lifelong locals and those just coming in for a shot.  Each week, I sit down with a Los Angeles resident to connect. Talk about our live and what got us to where we are today. Talking. What does it mean for two people to get to know each other?  It's also a show about connection in the larger sense, because each guest introduces me to the following week's guest. And as the weeks progress, it'll filter up a chain of people who can all be linked back to each other through who they know. That person we pass in the street, get behind at the grocery store, sit next to at the bar. They are all more connected to us than we may realize at first glance. A couple handshakes away...or, for the bold, maybe just one.  I'm Ana Fernatt and I don't know anyone in LA. But...now I know you. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2016 58:43

Can it be? Yes! It’s me! Marc Hershon, your host and SPF30 sunscreen for Epi136 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. We’re back once again with a Succotash Clips episode, with an installment jam-packed with fresh clippage. A couple of things before we get into the meat of this show… NOT CLIPS First of all, I’m thinking of starting a campaign to change the generic name of “podcast” to “soundcast”. There are three trademarks in the US for soundcast but two of them are for audio equipment and the third is for a teleconferencing service. So if we all start using soundcast now to describe the podcast experience, there’s a good chance we can keep it in the public domain. (We’ve talked on the show before about how the podcast name was coined around the iPod from Apple, a device that is no longer even produced. And it will do away with the even more awkward “video podcast” which isn’t really even a thing – the video folks can just have videocasts if they want that for a name.) Secondly, it looks like I’ll be participating in an upcoming celebration of the 40th anniversary of Spaghetti Jam in San Francisco. Spaghetti Jam was an early improv group/pickup game where pretty much any of the San Francisco-based improvisers at the time could drop in, including folks like Robin Williams, Jim Crenna, Lorenzo Matawaran, Michael Bossier, John Elk, Debi Durst, and a whole bunch of others, including yours truly. Well, we’re getting what’s left of the Jam back together for one night. On Sunday, September 11th, we’ll be at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. For more info, Check out the Spaghetti Jam page on Facebook.  And finally, I’m also beginning to get prepared for this year’s 5th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. Last episode I had a brief interview with Chris Mancini, co-host of the Comedy Film Nerds podcast and co-organizer of the LA Podfast. And in that talk we mentioned that I will be on-hand to moderate the Podcast And Journalism panel, which is going to be great fun. It’s going to be on at 2 PM on Sunday, and the panelists include Phoebe Judge and Lauren Spohrer from the Criminal podcast and Jefferson Graham of USA Today. All right, that’s about me. Now let’s get to the good stuff. For Succotash Clips this time around, we’ve for snippets from Big Question, Comedy Film Nerds, Fake The Nation, Here We Are, Monday Morning Podcast, Psycho Pshow, WTF and the most recent entrant into the Podcast Graveyard to date — the Taco Tuesday Podcast, our buddies in Killeen, Texas, who decided to shut it down just this week with their 100th episode. Add to that a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, whose been all over the Republicant and Democrap Conventions the past couple of weeks, a brand new spot from Henderson’s Pants and we will toss in a little closing ditty from friend-of-Succotash Abner Serd. CLIPS WTFI’m reviewing the episode out this week of WTF with Marc Maron, who has Jane Lynch in the garage as his guest. I think she’s hilarious and she also seems pretty level-headed and decent as a person. In this sample from the show, she’s talking about hoW she first met director and comic/actor, Christopher Guest, then later ended up in his Best In Show movie. Big QuestionOur next clip comes from the Big Question podcast and was submitted directly to us through our direct upload link. The note that accompanied it tells us a bit about the show and goes a little something like this: “Saw your requests for submissions on Twitter and figured that we’d throw our collective hats in the ring. The Big Question podcast has been in operation for slightly over a year and brings a weekly dose of no holds barred comedy and discussion. The four regular hosts are joined by a ever-changing collection of guests where we discuss a mass of topics from having sex with David Cameron for money (epi 2) to flatmates cleanliness problems (epi 33) to the inner workings of gay culture with our regularly occurring friend Rocchi."  Comedy Film NerdsThe other chief source for our clips here on Succotash Clips is our noble Associate Producer Tyson Saner. From his lair in an undisclosed location somewhere where in the northern reaches of California, Tyson is constantly slicing and dicing delectable chunks of podcast goodness. We have several he’s cooked up this week and the first is from the aforementioned Comedy Film Nerds podcast, hosted by Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood. It's from from epi317 back in April, and features guest Geoff Tate. Monday Morning PodcastAnother show I reviewed for Splitsider this week was the Monday Morning Podcast with Bill Burr. What a funny guy Burr is. And I admire his ability to just hold a mic and freeball his way through an hour without a co-host, a sidekick, or any other sort of production elements. I mean, he can’t read a spot worth a damn but, other than that, he’s on a level that includes Greg Proops and maybe Greg Fitzsimmons back when he occasionally didn’t have a guest. Get up to Splitsider.com if you want to read my review and here’s a snippet from the episode I reviewed, where Bill’s talking about Rudy Guilliani and cops. Psycho PshowTyson sliced us off a hunk of the Psycho Pshow – both of those words start with “P”, by the way, hence their tagline, “The World’s Worst Named Podcast – which is hosted by VJ, Chaidez and Toly. (No idea if I’m pronouncing those names right, by the way. Except maybe VJ because, really, how can you screw up initials?) I don't even try to describe the conversation in this 5-minute clip. I think they maybe were driving or walking somewhere while they were recording it. I can’t even tell. Fake The NationThere’s a new US comedy panel show that revolves around politics and current events. It’s called Fake The Nation and is hosted by Negin Farsad. Every episode she has a couple of comedically-inclined guests to help her comb through the nit and the grit of American and international politics. I mentioned Episode 3 this past week on Splitsider, when the talk was mostly about the political conventions and her guests were Dean Obeidallah and Nato Green. Here We AreComedians are just curiosity seekers like the rest of us. I mean, with podcast such as Professor Blastoff (may it rest in peace), The Infinite Monkey Cage, Talk Nerdy and many others, the hosts are often comics just looking for answers. Tyson clipped us off some of the Here We Are show, hosted by comedian Shane Mauss. And in his Epi77, Shane talks up music and psychology with guest Daniel Levitin, who is a cognitive psychologist, neuroscientist, best-selling author, musician and record producer. Taco TuesdayThis past week saw some friends-of-Succotash toss in the virtual towel. Podcast Dan, Adam Wolf and Dave In The Cave over at the Taco Tuesday podcast hung up their mikes. They managed to hang in for their centennial, Epi100, but some siutations with their physical studio space as well as what they perceived as low listenership, finally decided them on closing up shop. Normally we wait until a show’s been in the ground for a year or more before we feature it in the Podcast Graveyard, and I have a feeling these guys will be back in one configuration or another. But for now, we feature — literally — the last few minutes of the podcast that was Taco Tuesday. Tall Tales & Shaggy Dogs (The May Bee Song)So I got a note from our favorite acapella song stylist, Abner Serd, host of the Tall Tales & Shaggy Dogs podcast. Abner says, “Hi Marc - A few months ago, I tagged you in a song called 'Reflections on a Snowflake,' while acknowledging that it didn't pack as much humor as some of the others. Same goes for this one - it's all yours if you decide to use it, but I understand if it doesn't quite fit. Here is my latest little ditty, called The May Bee Song.” In closing, I did something this week that I don't think I've done since Succotash kicked off over 5 years ago, and that is take a long, hard look at our download numbers. Guess what? They suck! I mean, they're not horrible but they're not the kind of numbers that advertisers drool over. So if I can infringe on your delicate sensibilities to PLEASE get up to iTunes in good haste and give Succotash a 5-star rating and a few sentences of a glowing reviews, I will promise to redouble my efforts to churn out this show on a regular, weekly basis. But it's going to take a team to pull this off, otherwise we might just have to go the way of our friends at Taco Tuesday, bust a gum machine, and get the hell out of here... — Marc Hershon

The Three Stooges Throwback

A print interview I did about the show. I figured I'd post it here. The link no longer works, but here it is for you, to read. Please check it out. New episode coming in a day or two. Always. Or a week or two. When did you first start listening to podcasts and what was/were the first podcast(s) that you listened to? In 2005, I heard about podcasts. I discovered a show called Fanboy Radio and it piqued my interest. The first podcast I actually listened to was Comic Geek Speak. I had heard about Ricky Gervais, and about podcasts but did not know where to find them. I downloaded the Yahoo Podcatcher, which was a big unwieldy thing that took over my computer. Once I learned how I-tunes worked, I was hooked. What are some of your current favorite podcasts that you listen to and why? I am a huge comedy nerd, as well as an Anglophile. So I listen to tons of comedy, plus a bunch of soccer shows from the UK. I listen to most of the Earwolf shows. Comedy Bang Bang, etc. Kevin Smith’s Smodcast is great. It’s usually a sort of fluid list. I’m always looking for something new to check out, but I’m kind of picky. Since it is soccer season currently, I listen to the football shows from the UK first. BBC 606 is the best, it is a phone in show with opinions from fans instead of pundits. The BBC shows, most British shows, are the only ones that originate as radio shows first. Mostly I stick with strictly podcasts. Here’s my list: Uhh Yeah Dude, The Dollop, Doug Loves Movies, Football Weekly, I Was There Too, Greg Proops Film Club, 5 live World Football Phone-in, Hollywood Babylon, Monday Morning Podcast, 606 Football Phone in, Spontaneanation, 5 live Football Daily, Mysteries Abound, Improv4Humans, Stuff You Should Know, Who Charted, Second Captains, WTF, Danny Baker Show, Smodcast, Dead Authors, How Did This Get Made, The Bugle, Comedy Bang Bang, 7 Day Saturday, Steve Austin Show, The Smartest Man in the World, Useless Information Podcast. On what device(s) and app(s) do you listen to podcasts and why do you choose that/those device(s) and app(s)? I download them on I-Tunes and listen on my I-phone. It used to be my I-pod shuffle, but since I got the phone, it’s all in one. I host my podcast on Podomatic.com which has a great free hosting service. Although, I am reaching my storage and bandwidth limits and will have to pay the Pro fee soon. I hear you can host free on Libsyn, or Google Drive, but I haven’t looked into any of that yet. I kind of podcast in a vacuum in that I don’t know anyone else who does it or could offer tips, so I plug along as I can. When and why did you decide to become a podcaster? I did my first podcast in late 2005. It was called Gabe’s Superhero Show, then my wife and I did Comics and More with Gabe and Mandy. Superhero Show went 13 episodes and then my daughter was born and I had no time to podcast. Comics and More was just a couple of episodes, my wife wasn’t really into it. It took several years to get into it again with Hollywood Scandals of Yesteryear, and I’m at episode 16, trying to stay on a regular schedule. I was just captivated by the medium, and felt the need to broadcast about something. Anything. As a podcaster, do you have any influences (they don't have to be from the podcasting world)? Kevin Smith was and is a huge influence. He is always professing his love of podcasting and suggesting people record their own shows about the things that they are passionate about. Beyond that, all of the podcasters that I listen to influence me in various ways, to try to be funny, or interesting, or keep it short, etc. The guys who do solo podcasts, like Bill Burr, Greg Proops, etc. I am not comparing myself to either of these great talents, but I aspire to do an interesting show on my own. No one wants to listen to me blather on for an hour or more, but these guys can do a stream of consciousness show that is entertaining, interesting, and informative as well. The Danny Baker Show from England is inspirational to me, just from Danny’s delivery and turn of phrase. He is a professional broadcaster with years of experience and his call in show is about random slice of life things. I would like to say that when Tig Notaro discussed her various illnesses and issues on her podcast, Professor Blastoff, I felt like my friend was sick and I cried like a baby. Conversely, when Kevin Smith read his old journal entries in the Emo Kev episodes of Smodcast, I had to pull the car over because I was laughing so hard, tears literally streaming down my face. These two examples show the power of podcasts, to touch people and to entertain people in a very personal way, and that’s what I love so much about the medium. Discuss your podcast, Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear. My show Hollywood Scandals of Yesteryear started out as just what it sounds. Scandals from the early days of Hollywood; sex, drugs, sex. But after a couple of episodes that started to feel a little, I don’t know, like I wasn’t giving these people their due. I would not want to be remembered for the one time I did such and such with so and so. So I changed tack and started profiling the people overall. I still start with or try to find some “scandalous” or juicy bit of information. But it is basically profiles of the Silent Era Celebrities in around 15 minutes. Eventually, I’ll get into the Talkies, but I’m not sure when. How much preparation and what kind of preparation, if any, goes into each episode of Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear? Initially, I found a list of celebrities from the 10’s and 20’s who had famous or infamous issues. Then I thought of famous firsts. First overdose, first murder, etc. I’ll hear a name of an early Hollywood star and look them up, see if there’s anything that stands out. As far as research, I look on Wikipedia. Sometimes I’ll check the IMDB, but mostly I just keep it to Wikipedia. It’s all the research I need. On the specials, like the Lost Films, Rediscovered Films, or the upcoming Hayes Code Special, I’ll look a little deeper but I don’t like to get too bogged down. Keep it light. What criteria, if any, do you use to decide who to ask to be a guest on Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear? I’m going to keep it guest free, unless someone really wants to do the show with me. I had a bad experience last year with a potential guest. I approached an author who works in the same genre as my podcast. He responded with a laundry list of reasons why he would not appear on my “little show”, not professional, etc. It really sent me into a tail-spin. I did not record a podcast for almost 6 months because of this one person’s opinion. It is absolutely ridiculous to let someone affect you like that, but it just got to me. Not anymore. If someone were to approach me and ask to co-host or be a guest, I would definitely agree. But my show is a very niche show and most people are not that interested. Don’t let people put you off. Just record. Do you have a favorite episode(s) of Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear If so, which episode(s) and why? I would have said Fatty Arbuckle, because he got railroaded and people should hear about it. But Douglas Fairbanks stands out now that I think about it. He was just an amazing guy. How amazing? You’ll have to listen to the podcast. Ha! Are you at liberty to discuss any of the Hollywood scandals of yesteryear that you will be discussing on upcoming episodes? The Hays Code is coming up in an episode sometime soon, I think. I think it is Will Hays, not sure of the first name, I’ll check Wikipedia before I record. Anyway, Mr. Hays was a colossal douche who thought films were too racy and enacted, somehow, a code of conduct for the film industry. This was 1930. What are some of your favorite Hollywood scandals of yesteryear and why? I guess I’ll go with the fact that most of the silent films have been lost. That to me is a scandal. Some of these people were big stars and ALL of their films have been lost. We have production stills and whatnot, but they have been erased from the history of their profession. Feel free to shamelessly plug any of your other current or upcoming endeavors here. Just livin’ the dream. When I started podcasting, in the back of my mind, I secretly wanted someone to interview me about podcasting. Now that has happened. Thank you.

Hollywood Profiles of Yesteryear

On today's show I talk to comedian David Huntsberger. Originally from outside of Reno, Nevada, David grew up riding and shoeing horses, building fences, and all other manner of things a suburban kid like me would naively put under the rubric of "cowboy stuff". David started doing stand-up in San Diego many years ago, and since then, he's appeared on Premium Blend and Last Comic Standing, and has released three albums, which you can find on his site. It's been another couple of weeks since I last posted a new epi of Succotash, so I hope you didn't forget about us! We’ve got a bunch of podcast clips in store for you in this – Epi67 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. I really appreciate you sticking around and downloading or streaming our show. The delay was kind of unavoidable – work has been crazy busy PLUS the computer I use for creating the episodes was damaged while I was on vacation. Fortunately (and coincidentally) past-and-future guest as well as friend-of-Succotash Dana Carvey wanted me to help him out with some writing on a project, so I bartered the job out in exchange for a spiffy new Mac to replace Fleegle, the official Succotash computer.  (In memory of the first one, I am also calling the replacement Fleegle. It's not sentimental, it's just that all my files transferred over to the new one and it would be a hassle just to change its name…) Honorary Associate Producer I want to give a big shout out to our friend and avid listener Tyson Saner, who recently has been clipping some comedy podcasts that HE enjoys listening to and then passing the clips along to Succotash. We got a bunch of them from Tyson this show so I think I’m going to make him this episode's honorary associate producer. (It's probably temporary mainly because I think Tyson is about THIS close to launching his own podcast – at which point he won’t have any spare time left to cut clips for our show!) Thank you, Tyson, I really appreciate it. Thanks, Charley! Another friend of the show, Charley Miller, featured an interview that he did with ME back in April on a recent episode of his Random Variety Show podcast. And it wasn’t just an interview – this is a real tribute to our show. He plays a couple of classic Henderson’s Pants spots, played a clip of us clipping RVSP, and he even plugged I Hate People!, the business book I co-wrote a few years ago (which is still available online!) On top of all that wonderfulness, Charley dipped into his 1-year-old son’s college fund and kicked a very generous donation in through our Donate Button on the SuccotashShow.com website. So get up to http://RandomVarietyShow.com or iTunes or Stitcher or the PodGods network and give Charley’s episodes a listen. (You should also do like Charley did and feel free to donate a little bit to help us keep this podcast going!) Those Great Succotash Recipes One of my favorite features of our show is fast becoming the succotash recipes that appear at the very tail end of the show. The original idea came from Jabs at the Dhead Factor and Boganwood podcasts and it was fun to play an actual recipe for succotash after every show – I just grabbed the audio off of YouTube video where people were cooking the stuff. But after doing that for about 6 months, the well was running try. So I’ve been reaching out to some of the more creative comedy podcasters out there and asking them to record recipes. So far we’ve had Chef Eddie Vedder from the Tiny Odd Conversations podcast and Chef Terry with a Cajun recipe from the Don’t Quit Your Daycast podcast. This week’s episode features a recipe provided by Davian Dent over at the Bitter Sound Podcast through his Bitter Sound Cooking Class and Chef Matt Bubbles. Chillpak Hollywood Hour Even though we’ve been down for a couple of weeks, it seems our friends Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness over at the Chillpak Hollywood Hour podcast have been swamped and, although they’ve been very good about putting out their Monday episodes, they’ve been from the set of a new movie they’re producing, directing and acting in called The Ladykillers. As a result, they haven’t been mentioning Succotash, which is fine, but those have been the clips I’ve been playing here – when they mention our show, see? I guess we’ll just call the past couple of weeks a wash. This Week In Comedy Podcasts My latest review on Splitsider.com, for This Week In Comedy Podcasts LAST week, was The Jimmy Shubert Show. Veteran comic and actor, Jimmy Shubert has been around a while but only 2 episodes into the world of podcasting. And I’m going to interview Shubert on the next epi of Succotash, so how about that? Boganwood Chronicles, Cont'd. This show also features Episode 6 of Boganwood, the podcast mini-series out of Australia. Just before that rolls, there's more from an interview I had over Skype with the series' creator, Jason McNamara. Double Dose O' Durst Our Burst O' Durst segments have been piling up so in Epi67 we're running two - one towards the beginning and one in its usual spot near the end of the show. Yoshi Didn’t Podcast -16 THE CLIPS The Dana Gould HourThe funny and dark, or maybe it’s the darkly funny Dana Gould is back. I thought I was offline for a bit but he’s got me beat by a month. He has a better excuse – and I’m not telling tales out of school because he mentions it right in the opening to The Dana Gould Show – he was going through a divorce. When I saw him early in the summer, it was just getting started but now most of the hysteria is done with and he getting back to finding the funnier things in life. In this clip Dana and two of this episode’s guests – April Richardson and past Succotash guest Matt Weinhold – chat it up about ghosts in the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, which seques quite naturally into a discussion about cocaine. What? The Perfect 10Anyone familiar with Ralphie May’s comedy know that he’s got strong opinions about things. He’s not afraid of expressing them onstage and he’s definitely not afraid to jump into them on his podcast which he co-hosts with his wife, comedian Lahna Turner. It’s called the Perfect 10 and this week it jumped up into the Top 100 on Stitcher at #91, having leaped up 45 places since last week. In this clip, we discover that Ralphie not only doesn’t like wine very much but HATES the movie Sideways, that is all about wine and wine tasting and screwing. This clip precedes a visit that Lahna then makes to take a tour of a winery and to learn a little something about viticulture.  The Bitter SoundThe Bitter Sound podcast out of the UK is often a sort of audio experiment. Host Davian Dent likes bending sound and structure in interesting and – often – disturbing ways. In the spirit of the BBC over there, Davian’s recently concluded his second season of six shows and we have a clip from that last show where a friend has bought him something to commemorate the occasion.  Call Chelsea PerettiHere is the first of the clips submitted by our buddy Tyson Saner. Tyson is not just an avid listener to podcasts but he’s a very supportive voice out there for a lot of shows – he’s constnatly retweeting stuff from not just Succotash but Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Combat Radio and others that he wants people to discover. I love this clip from Call Chelsea Peretti – a show we hadn’t gotten around to featuring yet – as Chelsea has guest Bill Burr on her podcast and you can tell they like mixing it up a bit. Action Science TheaterWe received a clip from Dan Bond, Brian Macken, and Dan Booth from their relatively new sketch-based podcast. Action Science Theatre is a monthly show. The description on their website reads: “Action Science Theatre is a podcast in the style of a radio play, that mixes action, science, comedy and silly voices to create a welcome distraction from real life for 20 minutes or so. It is unquestionably the finest free online audio drama you can get without trying any others.” There’s a little bit of a feel of The Thrilling Adventure Hour, Superego and Illusionoid to the show – at least in the clip we have, but that’s not a bad thing at all. BertcastWe played a clip from the Bertcast – hosted by comedian Bert Kreischer – when he first launched about a year and a half ago. Our honorary associate producer Tyson Saner lets us revisit the Mancave this week when Bert lures Marc Maron out of the WTF garage on The Bertcast to get real about marriage, kids, drinking, as well as hopes and dreams.  Mission Log: A Roddenberry Star Trek PodcastTyson Saner comes through again with Mission Log: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast. It’s a one-of-a-kind thingeroo that I’d never heard of but is pretty interesting, especially if you’re into The Trek. It features Ken Ray and John Campion delving into EVERY episode of EVERY Star Trek TV series, recounting the plotlines and then delving into the character motivations, plot wrinkles and everything in-between. There’s a sense of humor to it, for sure, but this is for the true ST aficionado.  One Dollar BeerOur next clip was sent in by Tommy Kay, one of the hosts of the One Dollar Beer podcast. Other hosts include Frost-T and Anthony Gunn. Tommy’s cover note says, "This is a snippet of our second episode entitled "Purple Lightsabers and White Women". It includes a clip from a segment where one of the hosts reveals some of his list of confessions and secrets that he never told anybody, along with reactions from the other hosts. Thank You." No, no - thank YOU, Tommy, for sending the clip in. Enjoy your first taste of One Dollar Beer… There it is, Epi67 of Succotash, all neatly wrapped up and ready to pass along to your friends! – Marc Hershon

With Epi32 we're back at Studio P with Engineer/Producer Joe Paulino and all is right with the world. (BTW, be sure to check out Joe and Tim White's CD Inhale Slowly - it's not only great meditation and relaxation music, but it's kicking ass on the mellow music charts!) This episode of Succotash is positively brimming with podcastly goodness — a scintillating guest co-host, a new Henderson's Pants ad, an installment of Boozin' With Bill, a Burst O' Durst, sci-fi comedy music from John Anealio and a passle of podcast clips. Our guest co-host is no stranger to Succotash listeners — it's Phil Leirness, he of Chillpak Hollywood Hour podcast fame. Phil was in Northern California and the timing worked out that he was able to get to Studio P and help me serve up this latest portion of Succotash. We talk a little about his work and he gives us a few tantalizing glimpses into what is going on with the TWO follow up films to The Truth Is Out There, the conspiracy theory based documentary Phil directed. (Both CHH and TTIOT are produced in collaboration with TV's Dean "X-Files" Haglund, who our listeners also know from his audio visits to the show.) Phil's a great conversationalist and has well-expressed commentary on the clips in this episode. Speaking of clips, here's what in store in Epi32… Chillpak Hollywood Hour Our guest co-host and his heterosexual life partner Dean Haglund discuss some of the Comedy nominations for the upcoming Emmy Awards. Combat Radio I've been wanting to play something from Combat Radio so reached out to the show's ringmaster, Ethan Dettenmaier, via Twitter. He shot me a link to a clip featuring Phil Leirness without even knowing he was with me this show. It all boils down to a scheme to break into Area 51… After Hours with Mark Pitta Friend of Succotash Mark Pitta has a rare treat in his latest After Hours podcast episode: An interview he did back in 2001 where he interviewd comic legend George Carlin in front of a theater full of people. In this clip, Carlin remembers the transition point between his straight-laced, necktie-wearing persona and the counter-culture icon he was to become. The Dana Gould Hour Dana Gould and his guests Steve Agee & Matt Weinhold get into it about Comicon, which recently wrapped its latest incarnation in San Diego. Ham Radio Not being a huge fan of the "shootin' the shit" brand of groupchat podcasting, I got a laugh out of Ham Radio host Brett Hamil's ad for Crosstalk Comedy. Professor Blastoff Epi64 of Professor Blastoff starts off with a very sobering note by co-host TIg Notaro, as she reveals that she has been diagnosed with double breast cancer. Her co-hosts Kyle Dunnigan and David Huntsberger, are not only sympathetic but help to make the experience a pretty safe one for Tig to be so forthcoming. Click over to their homesite to leave her a message of support. Pissed Off Man Show We’ve featured a few clips from the deeply Irish brogued Gee & Jay Show from Belfast. Well, Gavin – who put the G in Gee & Jay – sometimes has to wait around for Jay to show up and that rage is what gives us a few tender moments of the Pissed Off Man Show. What Duvet Said Rob Celli, one half of What Duvet Said, was a previous guest co-host of Succotash. Now he’s moved to New York but he and Jason Duplissey – who is in LA – still pull off the show. (Coincidentally, I originally found out about these guys from Phil Leirness.) Booth announcer Bill Haywatt is back in the studio with another Boozin' With Bill segment. This time he serves up a concoction called "The Red C", which he picked up in his travels as a journeyman radio announcer in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. This libation was actually surprisingly good and we were sorry that after the first round was gone, there was no more to be had. See the recipe right over there on the left had side of the page… Off the air and in the reading world, in This Week In Comedy Podcasts, I’m reviewing The Thrilling Adventure Hour #83: Cactoid Jim, King Of The Martian Frontier with guest stars Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin and Zachary Levy. Just go to Splitsider.com to lay your eyes on that review. That's going to do it for this week's installment. There should be plenty to keep you busy until Epi33, where I will spend the show chatting with comedy sci-fi musician John Anealio and playing some of his very funny and nerdy music. Until then, please have fun passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

I had no idea it was going to take this long to get to the next episode of Succotash. Between moving, a bum hard drive and the day gig (you don't think podcasting actually pays, do you?), it's been hard to scrape this epi together. But because it's been so long since the last show, I kicked in an extra half hour of audio goodness. Dorien Davies and Kenny Stevenson The core of this epi is my interview with Kenny Stevenson and Dorien Davies, a couple of sketch players, actors and now movie "hyphenates" who were recently in range while Kenny's group Oh, Brother! was performing in the 2012 San Francisco Sketchfest. (A few years ago, the three of us were also heavily involved in an innovative LA-based sketch group, called Fries On The Side.) I caught them on a sunny Sunday just before they headed back down south and we did the interview in Washington Square Park. (Needless to say, the audio experience of being outside is a little different than the perfectly balanced environs of Studio P - so please bear with the lesser sound quality.) Kenny and Dorien not only talk about their experiences going through training and performances with The Groundlings in LA, but the excitement of writing, producing and starring in their first feature-length film. Missed Connections is heading for film festivals starting this month, so get the inside scoop on how it all came about right here. During a break in the interview, I play Drinking Beer And Smoking Cigarettes, a novelty comedy song by comedian Perry Kurtz that dropped on YouTube less than a month ago and already has almost a million hits. Tacking on an extra half-hour allows us to hear a decent number of podcast clips as well. Here are the shows in store for you, along with links to their homesites: • Way Too Hip Radio I've been meaning to get a clip up from LyonHart and Labrat for some time. I had an interview with LyonHart back when Succotash was just a few episodes old and they've been big supporters of the show You can check them out live every Monday night at 7 PM EST at http://WayTooHip.com or afterwards on iTunes. • The Dana Gould Hour Our clip is harvested from the second-ever episode of The Dana Gould Hour, a brand new offering from the show's namesake, who is a very funny comedian and writer (most notably on The Simpsons). In this segment, he's joined by fellow comic and writer Ed Crasnick. This and all future episodes of TDGH can be had at http://DanaGould.com and on iTunes. • Probably Science What is it about comedians and science? From Bill Nye, The Science Guy to the Professor Blastoff podcast, they go together like Goober's peanut butter and jelly. This newcomer to the podcast fold (less than a dozen 'sodes so far) features a trio of self-avowed "professional comedians and incompetent scientists" - Matt Kirshen, Brooks Wheelan, and Andy Wood - who take a look at science-oriented items in the news and have at them. Episodes also features guests, such as this clip from epi7 with Kyle Kinane. Catch up with the eggheads at http://ProbablyScience.com and iTunes. • Royal & Doodall This pair of rollicking Brits - Angus Doodall and Tommy Royal - have been stalwart retweeters of our Succotash Twitter feed and are fans of the show, despite the fact we haven't gotten around to playing a clip from their show...until now. In this clip, a segment they call "Redneck Sports", you'll hear their impression of a couple of Southern-fried hicks. There's a lot more to be had at http://RoyalAndDoodall.podbean.com or on iTunes. • The Anti-Semantic Show These spirited East Coasters - Ryan Anti-Hero, Pinder, Pradogod and Drew - describe themselves gleefully as "four assholes with microphones" so prepare to take the show as advertised. It's all in good fun, of course, including this clip where they're talking about possible ways, if unconventional, ways to protect yourself from a wolf attack. Find more fun at http://anti.libsyn.com and iTunes. • Snitch & Lins This is why it helps to reach out and let us know about your comedy podcast. Michael Snitch and Lindsey Price have just dropped their 30th 'sode and I'd never heard of them until they shot me a clip from their show. Have a listen and go find yourself a bunch more at http://SnitchAndIns.com or on iTunes. You can even see them here on YouTube. We close the show with a Burst O' Durst, our episodic commentary by political comic and raging moderate Will Durst. Find more of his insights at http://WillDurst.com and follow him on Twitter @WillDurst. To help remind you that we now have merchandise, faithful listener Mary Bernstein got herself a Succotash baseball jersey and is currently using a picture of her in it as her Twitter avatar (follow her @MaryElizabethhB). Take a look... Finally, I've found a good use for funds that we take in through our Donate button on the website. (You DO know that we are listener-supported, right?) I have several very good interviews with comedian friends that are trapped on the faulty hard drive I mentioned way back at the start of this blog. turns out that it's going to cost a cool $1000 bucks to retrieve the data off that drive, so I'm kicking off the Succotash Save Our Hard Drive Drive! So far, we've still got $988 to go, so give generously won't you? And we'll see you back here next time. Until then, please pass the Succotash! Cheers, Marc Hershon

We have a brand new episode of Professor Blastoff for you this week. You're welcome. It really was very selfless of us. Kyle could have been visiting his mother, Tig could have been raising money for hurricane relief, David could have been drinking cool beers, and Dr. Alex Platt could have been trying on pieces of burnt orange outerwear. But instead they got together and made this podcast about altruism. So once again, you're welcome.

Paul F. Tompkins is remarkably dapper, hilarious, and creative. If you'd like to be more like him you can buy a nice suit and write some good jokes, but can you teach yourself how to be creative? Today on Professor Blastoff we discuss the neurological phenomenon of creativity and how it controls us (as well as how we can control it). I'm sorry this description wasn't more creative. I really dropped the thematic ball this time.
