Today's Song of the Day is “Heart Has To Work So Hard” from Blondshell's album Violins, out September 25.
Hey Talkhouse listeners, it's Josh Modell. Instead of a new episode this week, we're resurfacing a great one from a few years back between Blondshell and Maya Hawke. Blondshell, aka Sabrina Teitelbaum, released a new song recently and she's about to hit the road for a big tour. Maya Hawke is an actor who just signed on to star in the upcoming Netflix show The God of the Woods and she makes great records as well. Check it out! —Josh Modell, Host of the Talkhouse Podcast On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two performers who've got friends in common, and became fast friends themselves while recording this chat: Maya Hawke and Sabrina Teitelbaum. Maya Hawke is best known for her day job as an actor, most visibly in a little show called Stranger Things, and she was also in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the new Wes Anderson movie, Asteroid City. But as you'll hear in this chat, she might be most excited by a side path as a singer and songwriter. Hawke has released two understated but fantastic albums so far, and she's basically finished another. The vibe is sort of indie-folk, sort of floating and ambient but lyrically really engaging. She's worked with some cool folks to realize her musical vision, including Christian Lee Hutson, who's the “Christian” referenced in this conversation, just so you know. Check out a “Sweet Tooth” from Hawke's 2022 album Moss right here. Sabrina Teitelbaum just released her debut album under the name Blondshell, and it's one of the best of 2023 so far. She describes it in this conversation as an emergency album—meaning a bunch of songs that she felt almost desperate to write, record, and unleash on the world. It's direct and angry in spots, but also darkly funny and completely unafraid. She's toured with the likes of Horsegirl and Porridge Radio, which might give some indication of what you're in for. Or I could just play you Blondshell's opus, “Salad,” right here. Check it out. These two have a fantastic conversation, and just in case it's not clear from the context, they're both good friends with the singer Samia, and each has contributed to a Samia covers series called Honey Reimagained. Blondshell did a song called “Charm You,” which is available now. Elsewhere in this chat, they talk about Hawke's playing “body air guitar,” the weird emotional hit you get when a tour is finished, and the difficulties of stage banter. Enjoy. 0:00 Intro 3:20: Start of Conversation 3:21: On mutual friends and covering songs 4:58: On “perceived vulnerability” and perspectives in their songwriting 9:08: On sad songs, music you can play for friends, and “Olympus” 10:57: On the writing and jazz experiences that inspired Maya's music 12:48: On the physicality of performing, feeling the music, and performance art 14:41: On playing live, post-tour loneliness, and active vs. passive time 20:06: On maintaining friendships 21:17: On Maya's latest record 22:54: On onstage banter, scripting shows, and keeping shows fresh 25:53: On finishing a record and learning from the experience 27:43: On music serving as a snapshot of an artists' life 28:26: On promoting music creatively and authentically, and social media 33:19: On the songwriting process, and tv show narratives' influences on our experiences 38:40: On being inspired by friendships 42:13: On Maya titling her album “Moss” 43:40: On writing about past pain, and trying to balance it with joy Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sabrina Teiltelbaum and Maya Hawke for chatting. Playlist:FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the BetterlandWUNDERHORSE - RainALCALÁ NORTE - Los llamados pitagóricos- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[Diez canciones nuevas que tienes que escuchar esta semana]OLIVIA RODRIGO - the cureCHARLI XCX - SS26THE LAZY EYES - How Does It FeelTo Be In Love?LEVITANTS - SeñalesAMARAL - No quiero más canciones tristesNOTHING BUT THIEVES - EvolutionMUSE - HexagonsTHE WARNING - EgoECCA VANDAL - BleachBLONDSHELL - Heart Has To Work So Hard- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -TWIN PEAKS - Back DoorTWIN PEAKS - Making BreakfastFINN WOLFHARD - I'll Let You FinishBLEACHERS - Take You Out TonightBRIAN FALLON - Not Bad for New JerseyBRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - We Take Care of Our OwnELASTICA - ConnectionSUEDE - TrashPULP - Common PeopleRAYE - Where Is My Husband!SABRINA CARPENTER - Espresso (Mark Ronson x FNZ Working Late Remix)MARK RONSON - Ooh Wee (feat. Colatura makes music that lives in the in-between: sometimes dreamy, sometimes heavy, and laced with fuzzy guitars, undeniable hooks, and raw storytelling. Long a fixture in the Brooklyn scene, the band relocated to Pittsburgh in 2024 and now splits their time between both cities.Colatura's new EP 'If I'm Being Honest' came out August 1st via Easy Does It Records. Produced by Nixon Boyd (Hollerado, Dizzy), the EP plays like a series of late-night confessionals - introspective, nostalgic, aching, and ultimately cathartic. It marks a new chapter for the band, expanding on the melodic, dreamy indie rock of their 2022 debut LP 'And Then I'll Be Happy' and their 2024 A/B side 'Do You Miss Her' / 'Suffer Dude', which was produced by Aron Kobayashi Ritch (Momma, Kills Birds, Been Stellar).Colatura's music has earned praise from outlets such as FLOOD, Brooklyn Vegan, Under The Radar, Austin Town Hall, The Alternative, and Atwood Magazine, and landed spots on Spotify editorials such as All New Rock and Fresh Finds Rock, as well as regular radio rotation at stations like KEXP and WYEP, where they also performed a live set this past February. Described live as “like sunshine streaming out of an amp with the volume set at nine,” Colatura has shared a stage with bands such as DEHD, Slow Pulp, Mamalarky, Nation of Language, Toledo, Pom Pom Squad, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and will be supporting Blondshell this November. With official showcases at SXSW, Capitol Hill Block Party, NXNE, New Colossus, WYEP's Summer Music Festival, and Pittsburgh's Millvale and Northside Music Festivals under their belt, Colatura is carving out their place in the indie rock landscape. Following the EP, the band hit the road for a US headline tour and has a European tour slotted for this fall. Thanks for listening!!! In which the Curmudgeons once again venture to the City of Angels to recapture all the great vibes generated during the 1990s. After a 1980s in which glam metal and punk scenes dominated, what came next for Los Angeles? Well, the trade winds blew in from the Pacific Northwest, and the influence of grunge made the music crunchier and louder, giving us bands like Tool and Weezer. Meanwhile, the longstanding stylings of the L.A. underground found their way into the mainstream, giving us radio-ready glory from Jane's Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beck. A lot happened in L.A. during the dawn of the Internet age. We begin to cover those happenings in this episode. Blondshell is on tour now, and through most of the rest of this year. Get tickets here.

Our guest today is the phenomenal indie rock songwriter Blondshell. The project of Los Angeles-based artist Sabrina Teitelbaum first made waves in 2023 with her self-titled debut, which earned critical acclaim worldwide for its raw, intense guitar work and sharp lyricism. In this episode, we chat with Sabrina about the making of the new record, reuniting with producer Yves Rothman, and her desire to experiment with traditionally masculine sonic textures. I thought it would be fun to do a year-in-review of the music of 2024 with my friend James McCrae. Neither of us are music experts, but we're constantly sharing music with each other. James first came on the show in 2020, when we did a similar review of the music from that wild quarantine year when artists weren't touring and we all missed live shows. Fast forward to 2024, and we chat about what we've noticed over the last five years, including the changes in the music industry, trends we've seen, and of course, what we've had on repeat.James, a Bob Dylan super-fan, talks about his evolving tastes, new genres, and how pop and hyperpop have influenced his music choices. Côté nouveautés, Blondshell dévoile "If You Asked For A Picture", attendu en mai, tandis que My Morning Jacket prépare "Is", son dixième album. Happy New Year, Indieventurers! It's 2025 and there are so many flavours of existential dread tied up in that particular statement that we have no choice but to distract ourselves for at least a couple of hours a day with lovely video games – or (we hope you make this choice, at least) with podcasts about video games! While there's a lot of uncertainty ahead, one thing we can be reasonably sure of is that there are some absolute bangers due to make their debut on the indie gaming scene this year – although as ever, we 100% support devs who put their own wellbeing first, which is why there's absolutely no hard feelings if any of the games on this list get pushed into 2026 and beyond. Settle in as we rhapsodise on the upcoming merits of Blue Prince, Citizen Sleeper 2, Demonschool, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, Metropolis 1998, Monster Prom 4: Monster Con, Morsels, Paralives (complete with bonus chat about fellow upcoming indie life sims Vivaland and Alterlife), Promise Mascot Agency, Skate Story, Strange Antiquities, Streets of Rogue 2, Tiny Bookshop, and Wanderstop. Because it's our first episode after our long Christmas break, everyone brought along a double helping of hyperfixations this week! Rebecca recommends going into zombie horror-comedy movie One Cut of the Dead knowing as little as possible, and going into Waterstone's book of the year Butter by Asako Yuzuki knowing a bit more than what's printed on the cover. Rachel is, naturally, hooked on The Traitors Season 3 (but not The Traitors Australia Season 2, thankyouverymuch) and the second season of Severance. Liam recommends checking out indie rocker Blondshell if you haven't already, and also thinks that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle might be the greatest triple-A game in years – which draws out a surprising consensus across the whole group. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Today's Song of the Day is “What's Fair” by Blondshell, out now.Song of the Day is supported by Summit Brewing Company.
Last year (2023) was a banner one for Sabrina Teitelbaum, aka Blondshell. Her self-titled debut LP gained new fans and received critical acclaim — one of the songs from that album, “Joiner,” even earned a coveted spot on Barack Obama’s year-end playlist. Her band has been touring extensively, and this summer found them trotting around the globe on the festival circuit while putting together a sophomore album. “What’s Fair” is a new pop-punk song that’s been lighting up their live sets as it grapples with the complexities of mother/daughter relationships.
