Jim Markham, author of Big Lucky and founder of PureOlogy, believes everyone can be “big lucky” and achieve success. Jim's perseverance, ability to overcome odds, business acumen and “made to win” mentality provided the foundation for him to have a highly accomplished career. Jim has founded four and developed five successful hair care companies, netting over $1.2 billion in combined retail sales – Sebring®, Markham®, ABBA®, PureOlogy® and ColorProof®. With each success, the Markham name has become synonymous with authentic, quality, high-performance products that serve as an industry standard. Jim is best known for pioneering sulfate-free, salt-free products and creating the luxury color care category, and he continues making his mark as the acclaimed, best-selling author of Big Lucky: Serial Entrepreneur Jim Markham's Secret Formula for Success. This life-changing page-turner is an Amazon.com best-seller and was featured as Audible's #1 new release. But Jim's path to success wasn't foregone, obvious or easy. Married at 15 with a child, Jim Markham began his career as a barber as a means to support his young family. His undeniable ambition led him to California to meet with celebrity stylist Jay Sebring, an encounter that resulted in a lasting and important partnership. Jim became a Sebring distributor, Jay's protégé and eventual successor, taking over the Sebring business following Jay's untimely death as a result of the Manson murders. As a savvy celebrity stylist, Jim's client list grew to include stars such as Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Johnny Carson, Frank Sinatra, and Robert Redford. Jim quickly found that he had a gift for product development and for detecting needs in the market. His entrepreneurial spirit drove him to create companies that delivered innovative products to meet those needs, including being first-to-market with natural-based, 100% vegan, cruelty-free, carcinogen-free, premium, color-protecting haircare formulas. The Strands That Bind Us –In today's episode of The Strands That Bind Us, we sit down to chat with native New Yorker Yureesh, who experienced several life chapters worth of lessons, even before jumping into the hair community. Yureesh and Drew were introduced several years ago being involved as educators with L'Oreal Professionnel, where they developed a friendship, exchanged countless ideas and concepts, and supported each other's growth. Today Yureesh sits as the Global Director of Development for Pureology, director of education at Broome Street Society Salon in New York City, facilitator of Personal and Business development workshops for hairstylists and corporate teams within L'Oreal Professionnel Products Division, and is one hell of a motivating individual. His unique path has led him to a blend of highs and lows filled with punk music, family support, substance abuse and silver linings as he has reinvented himself and allowed his successes to stack high. The perfect recipe for propelling sustainability change in the beauty industry—in any industry—might just be this: a better product made with a deep focus on sustainability, that also created a delightful experience for the consumer, and supported by big brands. That’s exactly the recipe that Shane Wolf. GM, Worldwide, REDKEN, Pureology, Mizan and also Seed Phytonutrients offers as founder -- amazing hair care products in shower-safe paper bottles made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper with a post-consumer recycled liner. Shane discusses how Seed Phytonutrients partnered with independent American organic farmers to harness the power of local seed varieties to create elevated natural-origin products. Plus, when the packaging is opened, there’s a seed packet so the consumer can play a part in growing.
Angel del Solar knows there is a difference between living by design versus living by default. Angel and his partners did just that. They worked hard and achieved their goals when they developed the prestige grooming brand 18.21 Man Made. Cofounders Aston LaFon, Angel del Solar and David del Solar saw a deficit in the male grooming market and they went for it. Why 18.21 Man Made? The name references two amendments to the U.S. Constitution—the 18th, which initiated Prohibition, and the 21st, which ended the national ban on alcohol. Because these mavericks couldn’t find the men’s goods they had been searching for, they decided to “bootleg” their own. The bottles are cleverly designed to look like old-time beer cans and whiskey flasks! In this podcast, Angel shares his journey as a young hairdresser from Pamplona, Spain to Seattle, Washington where he worked for Gene Juarez Salon and Spa. He then on to open Angelo Mendi salons. After that, he joined the Pureology creative team, and then Enjoy as an art director. Serendipitously, he and LaFon met, had common beliefs and ideas and they became colleagues and friends. After a few years, the two decided to collaborate and they became partners in a distribution group called Credible Culture, in Texas. Angel shares how his brother David joined the business. The three of them ultimately designed a distinctly masculine line that gentlemen could own with pride. Listen as Angel shares his 3 guiding “rules” that none of the partners deviated from as 18.21 Man Made came to life. These three non-negotiables were each product had to look cool, smell great, and perform. This clearly has been accomplished. https://www.1821manmade.com Instagram, Twitter and Facebook @1821manmade
