Cotton On has proven that good retail businesses can still grow in a very big way after its profits doubled for the last 12 months. Tabcorp has taken a $33m punt by acquiring a 20% stake in a social media betting app called Dabble. Dubber Corp, an Aussie voice technology company, has ‘restated' its revenue figure from its preliminary results... and investors have sold their shares in a panic. --- Build the financial wellbeing of your team with Flux at Work: https://bit.ly/fluxatwork Download the free app (App Store): http://bit.ly/FluxAppStore Download the free app (Google Play): http://bit.ly/FluxappGooglePlay Daily newsletter: https://bit.ly/fluxnewsletter Flux on Instagram: http://bit.ly/fluxinsta Flux on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@flux.finance --- The content in this podcast reflects the views and opinions of the hosts, and is intended for personal and not commercial use. Gill Whelan joins Purposely to share her story as the inaugural Head of fashion label DECJUBA's charitable foundation. Gill swapped corporate sales for a career focused on purpose, combining skills learnt from business and experience with the charity ‘St Kilda Mums' in her new role, leading a corporate foundation. DECJUBA is a private company and was bought by former Cotton On founder Tania Austin in 2008. A women and girls apparel brand with 140 stores across Australia and New Zealand it has gone from strength to strength. Tania had envisaged setting up a foundation when the time was right. Formally established in 2021, the motivation to start a foundation was partly driven to provide some structure and strategy to their existing charitable giving. Gill Whelan joined as inaugural General Manager of the foundation in July 2022. DECJUBA had been a supporter of the charity St Kilda Mums, and this is where Tania got to know Gill. Gill impressed as someone with knowledge and passion for the charity sector as well as a long-standing love for fashion. Leaving St Kilda Mums was not an easy decision for Gill, she had been with them for over a decade and had grown close to their clients, staff, and supporters. Established in 2009, St Kilda Mums, based in Melbourne Australia, raise funds, and redistribute pre-loved items to children to ensure a safe start to life. Instead of being discarded, prams, cots, clothes, and essential items are donated to St Kilda Mums to then be rehomed to families in need. Gill's gateway into the charity sector was through volunteering, she had spent a ‘fun' five years living in New York with her family and had arrived back in Melbourne Australia at a ‘bit of a loose end' but determined to re-engage with her community and make use of the spare time she had. She started volunteering at St Kilda Mums, performing several roles over the first few years but ended up falling in love with the organisation. Inspired by the founder and CEO Jessica Macpherson (a former guest of Purposely), ‘she was an incredibly inspiring and ambitious woman, she can draw people in and take them on a journey. it was a fantastic organisation to be involved with and ultimately provided me with opportunities in terms of my career.' Gill outlines the DECJUBA Foundation's ambitious goal to positively impact 25 million lives by 2025. ‘It's wonderful to have that big ambition, we're really committed to transforming lives and helping those in need and ultimately creating real sustainable change.' DECJUBA, like other brands trading in the ‘fast fashion category' is under pressure to lessen their impact on the environment and ensure sustainable practices in everything they do, from sourcing materials to the manufacturing process, and how they deal with waste. There is also pressure on brands to do the right thing by their employees and suppliers to ensure there is no exploitation. This pressure is coming from customers who want to buy sustainable fashion items and who will not buy from a brand if they exploit workers. Employees are also only willing to work for companies who are focused on positive world impact. Gill is very aware of this, and she talks about their approach to sustainability. ‘We don't shy away from the fact that we're a fast fashion brand and that has environmental impact. We're sort of fronting up to that as much as we can and trying to go even further than I guess is expected of us and the foundation goes hand in hand with that' Gill is looking forward to growing and scaling the work of the foundation and ensuring it has a positive and lasting difference on people's lives as well as the environment. ‘at the moment it is just me although I have loads of support from all parts of the business to help the foundation' We are excited to see where Gill will take the foundation and how she will use her experience to help shape the direction of the foundation as well as the company. You can find Gill on Instagram @gill_at_work --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

The hottest topic in the digital market, Salesforce's Jo Gaines reckons, is loyalty. And she has two words for brands not delivering personalisation, killer experiences, and a rewarding value exchange: ‘Watch out'. “They really expect you to know all of that,” she says. Competitors are likely circling. Beauty giant MECCA is nailing it, and there are smaller businesses emerging that are looking at partnerships to deliver similar experiences. Likewise, Gaines says, purpose-driven organisations are seeing fundamentally better returns, and the work by big corporates during disasters isn't going unnoticed. “People are going to Woolies and Coles, they're going to Bunnings, they're relying on companies like Cotton On,” she says. “They are front and centre in the community. They are holding the community together.” These are some of the latest shopping trends in 2022. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Overview: On 14 July, Times Live shared an article titled, “Cotton On to the fact that black lives matter,” spotlighting the defamation suit that Influencer and Blogger Shan Fourie laid out against a group of women who subsequently dubbed their collective movement #dontshushme. The article can be found at https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2020-07-14-cotton-on-to-the-fact-that-black-lives-matter/. Durban based lifestyle blogger with over 15K followers and Mom to 3, Shan Fourie was publicly called a racist after she used her own platform to elevate discussions around diversity by inviting her friend, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur and women's empowerment activist LeAnne Dlamini to share an open letter to white mamas about raising inclusive children. This is Shan and LeAnne's honest story. Remember, “People are hard to hate close up. Move in.” Brene Brown in Braving the Wilderness Links: Open Letter to White Mama's from LeAnne D: https://shanfourie.co.za/anopenletter/ About EGH (End Girl Hate) Campaign: https://www.ldhworld.com/aboutldh Media Statement: I have taken the last few days to allow the commentary on this Podcast to run it's full course - having especially noted requests from a number of thought leaders on this issue to allow WOC to speak, without their voices being overshadowed or interrupted. There can be no doubt that the issue at hand is one that is deeply emotive and consequentially steeped in controversy. I understand the concerns raised, in full. The aim of my Podcast is to provide a safe, inclusive space for divergent voices to have honest conversations about the issues that matter. This is because I believe that making progress towards true healing and unity is possible only when we are brave enough to engage, wholeheartedly, on the tough issues - however uncomfortable. As my post stated, women on both sides of the issue - including a number whom are not subject to any possibly pending litigation - were actively invited to share their respective stories. Despite the discomfort, controversy and criticism that I have received, what has unfolded in the social media commentary was unavoidable and I have made no attempts to interject or to shut that commentary down before it has run it's full course. That is because the nature of this discussion is steeped in deep pain, which will take time to resolve, through hard, honest conversation across existing divides. As the host of The Honest Hour Podcast, my aim has and will always be to provide an open and inclusive platform for all voices. I stand in unison with each women bravely speaking their truth so we can pave a way forward, together. In order to contribute to constructive change, I continue to welcome guests from all sides of any narrative on to the Podcast to chat openly - as I have done with this issue. I remain committed to continue hosting a safe place for divergent voices to be heard, should those voices choose to actively engage as I have offered. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christina-masureik/support

It's usually women who are accused of dressing the same, but one shirt has proved the old theory wrong. An orange striped shirt has shown up at music festivals all across Australia, sparking much hilarity on social media. The men's shirt, ironically enough called 'Festival Shirt', costs just AU$29.99 from Cotton On, and is seemingly quite popular. One writer for website Junkee went out to find the shirt at the FOMO Festival, and came across dozens of people all adorned in the uniform-like shirtView this post on InstagramI’d like to introduce you to my new religion...
People are prepared to pay the price for ethical fashion – and the industry is taking notice. --- “We believe that we won't need to use the word ethical in the next five years - because that is what the fashion industry will be.” Davyn de Bruyn has a bold vision – and he doesn't think it's too far out of reach. As the Managing Director of Thread Harvest, an ethical online fashion marketplace based in Australia, he knows that “people are prepared to pay more for ethical fashion”. He's not the only one who's convinced the needle is moving in the fashion industry towards ethical wear. Gershon Nimbalker puts together Baptist World Aid's annual ethical fashion guide. It scores fashion companies – from Cotton On and Country Road, H&M to Zara, even major department stores like David Jones and Myer – and gives them a rating from A through to F. The scoring criteria include company policies and how well they're enforced, whether companies have a relationship with their suppliers, factory conditions, and worker wages. “People are willing to pay the difference to get this right,” Gershon says. And companies are starting to notice - but competing on price while achieving ethical standards in the fashion industry is not without its challenges. “The one question mark we have with some of those fast fashion brands, is whether their business model is consistent with workers being paid a living wage,” Gershon says. “The only brands that are paying a living wage, are usually niche ethical brands that are committed to working with workers from the ground up … and you often pay more for those products as well.” For both Davyn and Gershon, their Christian faith is woven into their advocacy for ethical fashion. Gershon says, “My faith has certainly crystallised for me the things that are really important – that commitment to make the world better, to make it just,” Gershon says. “Love transcends boundaries, it's not just limited to my family and friends, but extends to wherever in the world there's need.” “When you look at a garment, you can immediately see where there's a tear or a rip, and you're drawn to it – but you go and repair it,” Davyn says. “In the Christian faith, we believe that you are created in the image and likeness of God, which means you have infinite value and worth. … If someone has infinite value and worth, then surely we should all have equal opportunity to thrive and enjoy the benefits of this beautiful world we were created to live in.” --- Read the 2018 Ethical Fashion Guide: www.baptistworldaid.org.au/resources/2018-ethical-fashion-guide Shop at Thread Harvest: www.threadharvest.com.au --- SUBSCRIBE to ‘Life & Faith' on Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/cpxpodcast FIND US on Facebook: www.facebook.com/publicchristianity FOLLOW US on Twitter: www.twitter.com/cpx_tweet

No one tell John Laws, but in this workplace, women actually wear pants. This week, we take a look at some other casual sexism from the week. But don't get your frilly knickers in a knot; because it's alllll just a joke. Earlier this year it was Bernard Salt who said Millenials can’t afford houses because they spend too much on smashed avo. Now a millionaire property tycoon says it's our addiction to lattes and the finer things in life that is stopping us stepping onto the property ladder. Does he have a point? There's a new slow-dating app but not everyone is convinced. Bill Gates has answered the all-important question; What's the best age to give your child a smartphone? Plus, we need to talk about the post-baby selfie. You know the one; a bikini shot just days after your placenta plopped out. Is it empowering, or a punch in the guts to other women? Show notes Your host and producer is Monique Bowley with Jessie Stephens and Mia Freedman Jessie does not recommend the movie Snatched Monz feels strange about Big Ballet on Netflix. Is she crazy? Mia recommends new winter PJ's from Cotton On. Thanks to Marie and Aaron, our live studio audience of two. Simon Shares Local GDP came in better then expected and importantly positive, so no technical recession. Manufacturing and mining were the strong sectors but we need a lot more very strong quarters to get out of the bad spot we find ourselves in and a down grade is still very much on the cards in December. Discovery (JSE code: DSY) has so many moving parts but for me the key is Vitality is now in 14 markets around the world. I remain a happy shareholder albeit they've done very little over the last year or so. We have a lot of shopping malls in South Africa, b some reports more per capita than any other country. Hyprop (JSE code: HYP) is by far the best of the bunch with regard local malls as they own high traffic top end malls. Mr Price (JSE code: MRP) seems to have lost the mantle. They have now had three reporting seasons over the last year and all disappointed. Is it just bad buying and the weather? I suspect they're seriously struggling under the weight on new competition from the likes of H&M and Cotton On. This is a biggie and if I was a shareholder I would be looking to exit. Capitec (JSE code: CPI) trading update sees HEPS 17%-20% higher. Wth a historic PE of almost 22x a little light but well ahead of consensus that was looking for single digit growth. Does volatility give you indigestion? Kristia reviews the CoreShares LowVoltrax ETF with expert commentary from Warren Ingram. Tonight, going back to basics with wealth creation 101 at the JSE. The Fat Wallet Show did the follow up about buying a house vs. renting. Stock Exchange News Service (SENS) Some listed companies seem to use it as marketing (witness the Sibanye proudly announcing their inclusion into the Top40 later this month and CarTrack announcing 550k subscribers) while other publish the bare bones (Comiar and Master Drilling just giving numbers in previous years). Others like Steinhoff seem to have moved onto Europe forgotten about us and just push links through SENS. I would also like to see a standard applied by the JSE. For example all results have to have the top four points (HEPS, Dividend, revenue & debt) right up front so you can't hide. JSE – The JSE is a registered trademark of the JSE Limited. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Teresa Palmer of LIGHTS OUT. When Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) left home, she thought that her childhood fears were behind her. As a young girl growing up, she was never really sure of what was real when the lights went out at night. Now, her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that jeopardized her safety and sanity. Holding a mysterious attachment to their mother (Maria Bello), a supernatural entity has returned with a vengeance to torment the entire family. Actress and model Teresa Palmer has gathered some impressive film credits. She was born in Adelaide, South Australia, to Kevin Palmer, an investor, and Paula Sanders, a former missionary and nurse. She completed high school at Mercedes College in 2003, where she was a popular student who was well-known for her practical jokes. She worked in a Cotton On outlet in Rundle Mall until she was discovered and cast on the spot--without an audition--in her feature film debut and breakthrough role in 2:37 (2006). Made by first-time writer/director/producer Murali K. Thalluri, the film competed in the 2006 Cannes Film Festival in "Un Certain Regard" and chronicles the lives of six students over the course of day and ends in a devastating suicide.
