Over the past 200 years, theatre has often been a lightning rod for social and political upheaval in the United States. Even the plays of William Shakespeare have been the subject of violent debate. This surprising history is examined in two recent books by James Shapiro: Shakespeare in a Divided America and The Playbook. Also, Trent Dalton's Love Stories, based on conversations with strangers on a Brisbane street corner, comes to the stage at this year's Brisbane Festival, and we pay tribute to the Australian playwright Jack Hibberd (Dimboola; A Stretch of the Imagination) who has died at the age of 84.
In this episode Elaine chats with Australian performance artist and dancer Leah Shelton about her show Batshit. We chat the inspiration for the show, her grandmother's story and the narrative of the “Cray” woman. Batshit - Traverse Theatre Dates: 1st -25th August @ Various Times Get Tickets Here: https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/batshit-festival-24 BATSHIT Women have long been locked up, medicated, pathologized and silenced by a simple label - ‘crazy'. BATSHIT is a wildly theatrical, unexpectedly funny, and deeply intimate story of female madness. Created by psycho-siren Leah Shelton (AU) and directed by Olivier award-winning performance artist Ursula Martinez (UK), this is a requiem for Leah's grandmother Gwen, who was incarcerated for seeking independence in 1960s Australia. BATSHIT draws on personal stories, pop psychology and Prozac-laden humour to explore the myths, fantasies and fears that keep us compliant, and the systems that let us down. Dedicated to all the women labelled hysterical, psycho, hormonal and deluded by a society that seeks to control and discredit their experiences. LEAH SHELTON Psycho-siren Leah Shelton creates stylized, guttural, renegade feminist work soaked in cult references and dark humour. Her work has taken her from the glamour of Las Vegas to the back streets of Kings Cross, from rigorous training in Japan to live art festivals in New York. As a solo artist, Leah has played on and off West End in London. She has graced the cabaret stages of La Clique, Club Briefs, Little Death Club, Vegas Nocturne and Jonny Woo's infamous UnRoyal Variety Show. Her first solo work, ‘Terror Australis', received numerous awards and toured Australia and France. Leah's second solo work, ‘Bitch On Heat', directed by UK Performance Art luminary Ursula Martinez, has toured to major festivals in Australia and Soho Theatre London to critical acclaim and standing ovations. With Lisa Fa'alafi, Leah is Co-Director of artist collective Polytoxic, creating hyper-visual works underpinned by diversity and collaboration. Polytoxic have presented work at PS122's COIL Festival NYC, Harbourfront Centre Canada, WanSmolbag Vanuatu, Sydney Opera House, Darwin Festival, Brisbane Festival, APAM, Bleach*, Enlighten, ArtsHouse Melbourne, Ten Days on the Island, Brisbane Powerhouse and QPAC.Originally dance-trained, Leah has a diverse performance background including over ten years training in the Suzuki Actor Training Method with Frank Theatre (Brisbane, AU), Suzuki Company of Toga (Toga / Shizuoka, Japan) and SITI Company (New York, USA). https://www.leahshelton.live/batshit HIPA GUIDES: HIPA GUIDES OUR WEBSITE - www.persistentandnasty.co.uk Persistent Pal & Nasty Hero - Pals and Hero Membership Email – persistentandnasty@gmail.com Instagram - @persistentandnasty Twitter - @PersistentNasty Coffee Morning Eventbrite - Coffee Morning Tickets LINKTREE - LINKTR.EE Resources Samaritans - Rape Crisis Scotland - Rape Crisis UK ArtsMinds - BAPAM Freelancers Make Theatre Work Stonewall UK - Trevor Project - Mermaids UK Switchboard LGBT+ - GATE PLANNED PARENTHOOD DONATE - DONATE ABORTION SUPPORT NETWORK UK - ASN.COM- DONATE

In Conversation is on location this week at Melbourne's Hamer Hall to speak with an artist who truly deserves the title of Broadway Royalty. Audra McDonald has won six Tony awards – more performance wins than any other actor, and the only person to win for leading and featured roles in both straight theatre and musicals. Her wins include turns in Carousel, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, and perhaps most notably, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill. She's featured in many well-loved television shows, such as The Good Fight, and The Gilded Age, as well as feature films including the live action version of Beauty and the Beast. As a classical soprano, she's performed with the Houston Grand Opera and the Los Angeles Opera, has sung with many symphony orchestras including the Berlin and New York Philharmonics, and she's won two Grammy awards. In this conversation, Audra takes us through her career from her childhood roles at a dinner theatre in Fresno, California, through her time at Juilliard to her subsequent success and how that's shaped her career choices and advocacy for civil rights. Audra McDonald performs in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on Saturday May 11, QPAC in Brisbane on May 15, and Hamer Hall in Melbourne on May 17, having already presented concerts in Perth and Adelaide at the time this program was published.

The Musical is theatre at its most spectacular and dynamic — so, how do they do it? We go backstage with their technical director, Richard Martin. And we meet some dedicated volunteers from The Rondo Theatre, home of the Cairns Little Theatre, which turned 70 this year.

She's a proud Goa-Gunggari-Wakka Wakka Murri woman who describes herself as fierce b****h and a truth teller. In this episode Jess and Leah dig deep on how Leah came to be such an exceptional story teller, and why it's important to tell the truth of the past. Leah is fearless when it comes to giving voice to those who don't have one, and there is so much we can learn about Australia's Indigenous issues from her in this conversation. But most of all Leah urges us to listen so we don't repeat the same mistakes of the past. Born and raised on the outskirts of Brisbane, QLD, Australia to an ex professional rugby league player and a gymnast/model, a career in acting was a different choice for a young Mitchell Bourke. After many hours of extra curricular training throughout school and multiple leads in school musicals, the arts were a definite calling for Mitchell. Though his high level achievements in sport played a part in his growth, his interest in art, human behaviour and psychology led him to continue his arts journey by studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at the Queensland University of Technology an audition based program that takes part for 3 years. Mitchell is looking forward to his new feature film ‘A Royal in Paradise' to come out, where he plays Prince Alexander alongside Rhiannon Fish. Most recently Mitchell has was the lead in Queensland's Theatre production of ‘First Casualty in 2022. Previous to that he was involved in QPAC's Fourteen. He has also worked on the SBS (The Family Law) and ABC (The Diary of an Uber Driver) as well as spending time with the Australian Shakespeare Company and has lead multiple internationally recognised short films. He has Australian and US based representation. Mitchell's acting journey has also led him to work behind the scenes on 3 international projects as a grip. Such projects include 'Young Rock', 'Blacksite' and most recently 'The Wilds S2' where he spent 5 months as a dolly grip. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/support

For Howard's troubles, his wife Anne endured countless death threats and were forced to live with armed bodyguards 24/7 for months at a time between 1996 and 1998
