Bant Breen is the Founder and Executive Chairman for Qnary, an award-winning executive reputation management and talent branding company. As more people appear online, it's become clear that their name searches need to be cleaned up and more professional. Qnary's company grew dramatically during the pandemic because your online presence matters more than ever, and executives understand this. In this episode, Bant talks about what executives should be thinking about when it comes to their online reputation, how to best reduce “bad” instances in your online presence, and why how you show up online really does matter more than you might think. Tips on improving your online presence Do an analysis on how you show up today in the search results. Are you happy with the results? Executives might not think it matters. It does. Future recruits are looking you up! How do you want future employees to see you? Reporters want to cite you as a source, but you need a strong and respectable presence to do that. Do you have your credentials? Do you look reliable? Are your articles/thoughts properly linked? Executives can take advantage of mini videos (which rank more quickly in Google) to improve trustability. These videos can be just 2-3 minutes long. We talk with author Gordon Pitts about his new book on New Brunswick's knowledge industry - and especially the success of Radian6 and Q 1 Lab.
Fifteen years ago, journalist and author Gordon Pitts wrote “The Codfathers”, a book about regional business tycoons like the Irvings, McCains and Sobeys. He's back now with “Unicorn in the Woods”, a book about the region's tech titans. The story revolves around the creation and eventual sale of cybersecurity firm Q1 Labs and social media monitoring company Radian6. Gordon joins Mark Leger to talk about his page-turner, a compelling story about the founders, and how they grew globally competitive companies out of Saint John and Fredericton and influenced a generation of tech entrepreneurs across the Atlantic region.
Gordon Pitts is the author of the book "Unicorn in the Woods: How East Coast Geeks and Dreamers Are Changing the Game."As tech investors the world over search for elusive unicorns (start-ups valued at over $1 billion), acclaimed business journalist Gordon Pitts asks whether there can be a place for high-tech innovation and unicorn-like value creation outside of major urban centres, whether in Atlantic Canada, rust-belt New York, or Northern Ontario.Journeying back to the origins of Radian6 and Q1 Labs — two New Brunswick companies that sold for a combined $1 billion — in the basements and offices of a group of geeks and dreamers, Pitts tells a story of two remarkable companies and the legacies that continue to this day. But theirs was not a simple tale of overnight success; there were sellouts and firings, comebacks and vindication, and still unfulfilled promise. What's on the It's the Economy, Stupid blog this week? Too often the deployment of digital strategies and tools begins humans conforming to technology limitations instead of technology being deployed intentionally in the service of human needs and opportunities - a human-centered approach. Dr. Lauren Vargas joins me on the Cohere podcast to discuss bringing humans back into the center of the "digital transformation" conversation and provides the CALM framework and specific examples for leaders to draw from. Lauren is particularly well suited to give guidance here, as she is one of the most experienced and widely practiced digital strategists I know. She's had an impressive range of experiences in both the public and private sectors, including senior roles at Radian6, Aetna, and Fidelity. In private practice now, she’s most recently been focused on helping museums around the globe with digital transformation. We recently reconnected in London where I also got to walk through the AMAZING at the Museum of London with her to see some of her work first hand. Key Quotes: "it's talking like technology with heart, right. So it's, it's when we talk about it being embedded in, in an organization, and we talk about being embedded in an ecosystem, in the DNA, it's how do we have technology with a pulse? How do, how are we having conversations and using and understanding, managing and creating digital, and technology in a way that is, is human-centered." On Culture as Terroir "I think culture is having a common language. It's having a shared belief and value system, implicit and explicit practices. You know, those conditions, those contexts are different for every single organization. Every organization has its own terrior. Each, each organization has its own unique fingerprint, contextual characteristics unique to that certain place that can influence and shape its character. So when we think about terroir, an agricultural and an ecological term, it's the soil. It's the topography. It's the climate that collectively gives and produces a particular characteristic. For organizations, terroir might be attributed to the type and size of the organization and the industry it is anchored in, it's visitor or customer demographics. It's physical locations and all forms of media that terroir, it's complex and it is comprised of internal and external forces that are unique to the organization. And, those forces ebb and flow. They adapt and adopt over time." The CALM Approach to Digital Leadership "Taking a CALM approach to digital leadership, to digital transformation, is incredibly powerful. And when I say calm, it's an acronym. C — Collaborative A — Anticipatory L — Letting go of Command and Control Leadership and Embracing Collective Leadership M — Mindful How do we, how do we think about a collaborative first environment? How do we embed, an anticipatory rhythm of practice and ritual? How do we let go of command and control leadership and how do we create the space to reflect?" There are times in a B2B marketer's life when they need to be reminded of what matters. Even though we are marketing to companies, we are still marketing to people, so what matters, are the people. An Award-winning Marketer, Strategist, Entertainer, that has worked for brands like Radian6, Billboard, and Nielsen, Katie Morse, delivers the human element in B2B marketing, while providing her expertise on chat, and marketing career advancement. Check it out! Takeaways: Keep the human element in your B2B marketing by getting to know your buyers. You can collect consumer insights and find out what drives them, their pain points, and what problems they are trying to solve. You then find out how your product or service will improve their lives. Changes in the market can happen in very sizeable measures, so if you only ever take small steps of change, then you could fall behind. Be strategic and take risks! Execute testing and see what your buyers are responding to. Be sure to allow recipients the ability to unsubscribe from your emails. If not, you seem desperate and no one wants to interact with someone that is desperate. Pro-tip from Kate Morse: If you want to learn how to be a better marketer, talk to other marketers. Learn from them and see how they carry out initiatives. If you are using chat, consider giving the user the option to select whether or not they want to chat in that moment, rather than having an automatic pop up chat box. When trying something new in marketing, consider doing it manually first before automating the process, so that when you automate the process, you have a firm understanding of what needs to happen. Be a life-long learner. If you stop learning, you start to fall out of relevance, you are not as powerful as a person as you could be, and you minimize your seat at the table. Trust your gut, don't always rely on your pros and cons list when making a big decision. Always be learning and curious, develop yourself. The companies are made up of several people, so B2B marketers need to keep the human element in their efforts and campaigns. Social media is new and trending. - Social media is NOT new. If you are not using social media in your everyday marketing, if it is an afterthought, you could be behind. Social media is constantly evolving and people are using it everyday, so it needs to be prioritized. Marketers should be fearful to try new things. - Marketers should NOT be fearful, but rather strategic. Fear holds marketers back from taking their outreach to the next level or trying new things. You cannot have incremental improvements if you only ever try the same thing. The way in which we communicate and share information with our staff can be very revealing about a person, their management style and their industry. Consider how often have you found yourself leaving a leadership meeting and asking “how much should I share with my staff?”. It’s a good and important question, and there is no wrong answer – everybody’s situation is different and some people have constraints to operate within that are outside of their control. But when it comes to transparency around company strategy, the question remains: how much, and what, do you share with your partners, prospects and team? Greg Poirier, Founder & CEO, CloudKettle Greg Poirier is president of CloudKettle, a tech-sector focused digital marketing consultancy company that specializes in scaling Sales, Marketing & Customer Success for B2B SaaS companies. John Somorjai is Executive Vice President of Corporate Development and head of Salesforce Ventures. Salesforce has over 3,000 partners and 150+ enterprise cloud and SaaS companies in their current investment portfolio. They’ve also had 30+ exits and five IPOs (on top of the 150!) He’s extremely smart and definitely worth a follow, so give him a shout. One of the things we didn’t get to discuss in this interview is that Somorjai has his JD from the Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley. I think that’s interesting context for how he got to where he is at Salesforce and how he might think in evaluating startup companies for potential investment. He was a senior director of corporate development at Oracle for almost 5 years before taking on a VP of Business Development role at Ingenio, a high growth company that was eventually acquired by AT&T. Somorjai then joined forces with Marc Benioff at Salesforce, and since 2005, John has led the evaluation, deal execution and integration for all mergers and acquisitions, and investments at Salesforce. His team has helped bring the company into insane growth areas through acquisitions including Demandware, Exact Target, Radian6, Buddy Media, Heroku, the list goes on and on…. Here’s what we discuss in this episode with John Somorjai EVP at Salesforce and Salesforce Ventures: 1.) How John progressed through his career to eventually lead investments with Salesforce Ventures 2.) How Salesforce investment has helped nurture growth in the ecosystem of enterprise cloud companies. 3.) Lessons from Salesforce’s expansion into European markets, and how the set themselves apart from other Corporate VCs 4.) Why Salesforce embraces corporate philanthropy and the 1/1/1 model 5.) A couple of weeks ago we released part one of our discussion with Charlie Johnson from Flagstar Bank in Michigan and and Andy Max from First National Bank of Omaha, and their efforts around integrating Salesforce.com within their banks. Because we just let them talk, we ended up with about 90 minutes of gold. Part two is where the guys talk about social "listening". Flagstar Bank started with Radian6 - which was purchased by Salesforce a few years ago and now fully integrated within their Marketing Cloud. Andy and Charlie both agree that your bank's brand is no longer wholly in your hands. The social side of brand strategy in the fast-moving, 21st century digital landscape is a place of enormous opportunity as well as fraught with peril.

HR Happy Hour - Episode 79 - 'The New Communities' Thursday December 16, 2010 - 8PM ET 'Community' might rival 'transparency' and 'engagement' as one of the most often repeated, and potentially misunderstood terms of the social networking age. 'Communities', especially online ones, take many forms, have a wide variety of platforms, and operate in so many different ways that it might be said that every community, be it a customer community, an employee community, or even the greater collection of people living in a city or supporting a cause, has it's own unique and distinct characteristics, needs, and benefits. With so many companies and HR organizations grappling the diverse and complex concepts of 'community', we thought it time to talk about communities, community management, and some of the ways organizations can extract the most value out of their supported communities, while simultaneously contributing to the community goals. Our guests will be Teresa Basich, Community Manager for Radian6, and two great guests from Kodak, Chief Blogger Jenny Cisney, and Community Manager Shruti Goradia. I hope you can join us for a fun and interesting discussion on communities and community management in this, the age of social networking.
