Our guests are the legendary Raqs Media Collective, formed in New Delhi in 1992, by Monica Narula, Jeebesh Bagchi and Shuddhabrata Sengupta. I like to call them intellectuals-at-large, but their production ranges from artistic to curatorial projects, from theoretical to educational works. The collective also co-founded Sarai—the inter-disciplinary and incubatory space at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. You'll hear their unique blend of thinking on technologies and media, from surveillance to bureaucratic interfaces as deeply embedded in societal dynamics; and we'll get to explore together how they have been producing knowledge as artists. The tidal changes in image cultures; how digital technologies are intertwined with urban infrastructures; how the poetic is also the political; and ultimately the significance of languages are a few of the things that are lingering in my mind and provoking further thoughts after this conversation.EPISODE NOTES & LINKSBased in New Delhi, Raqs Media Collective comprises three practitioners: Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta. For the past three decades, the Collective has been concerned with urbanism, epistemology, technology, globalization, and the experience of time. “There is an urgency to save our time from becoming the cost of business.” Raqs Media Collective's trio-logue binds economics to climate change, extinction, and extractivism. They stress the externalized costs of our accepted capitalist logics: including extreme weather, species extinction, and language loss. In content and form, the Collective wryly critique the “rationality” of economic thinking, shedding light on its many casualties. “Artists-in-Presidents” is initiated by Constance Hockaday, curated by Christine Shaw, and commissioned by The Blackwood (University of Toronto Mississauga). Podcast production by Vocal Fry. Transmissions are released every Friday from August 6–December 17, 2021. To view the portrait gallery, access ASL videos and transcripts, and for additional information about the project, visit www.artistsinpresidents.com and www.blackwoodgallery.ca. Raqs Media Collective was formed in 1992 in Delhi, India. The word “raqs” in several languages denotes an intensification of awareness and presence attained by whirling, turning, and being in a state of revolution. Raqs Media Collective take this sense to mean “kinetic contemplation” and a restless entanglement with the world, and with time. Raqs enlists objects such as an early-modern tiger-automata from Southern India, or a biscuit from the Paris Commune, or a cup salvaged from an ancient Mediterranean shipwreck, to turn them into devices to sniff and taste time. Devices and modalities are also played with to undertake historical subterfuge and philosophical query. Raqs practices across several media; making installation, sculpture, video, performance, text, lexica, and curation. Photo: Vicky Roy

In this episode, I talk to professional belly dancer, dance teacher and founder of world dance platform Raqs online, Sadie Marquardt. This is a woman I’ve admired for over ten years. A woman who has built an empire doing what she loves. A woman who has really honed her craft and not taken any shortcuts whilst doing so. So here’s some of the juicy topics we covered: · Body confidence and self-love · Honing your skill over years and years in order to become an expert and a voice · Quashing the starving artist mindset · Failure and how to move forward. For someone who I see as a master of their art, I felt no ego from her. This was probably one of the most beautiful takeaways from this episode. More about Sadie https://sadiebellydancer.com/ https://raqsonline.com/catalog More about me, Saima. I help professionals and entrepreneurs from creative industries step out of their own shadows and stand in their power. I do this as a Wellbeing and Personal Transformation Coach. This compelling and far-reaching conversation with Monica Narula of Raqs Media Collective explores themes of belonging, Not-Knowing, and machines as the materialization of desire. The discussion touches on Raqs projects old and new – including the 11th Yokohama Triennial they recently curated in Japan – and offers reflections on both the intensity of our present moment and the ‘afterglow’ we might experience in its wake. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, two-thirds of the Raqs Media Collective (Monica Narula and Jeebesh Bagchi) talk to Shwetal A.
