The Nightmare Krew continues their exploration into the Revanite Catacombs, hoping to unearth the source of the Sage's power, and the reasons for which an empire was borne. Having harvested fungus from a druidic deep-dweller, and holding a vigil for a long-dead royal, the Krew found the spiritual resting place of the ancient Ruler of Revan, Oda Valtameri. But for each question Ryujin had Oda answer, like the Hydra of legend, more questions sprung up in their place. Now, as the other Valtameri, Tatsu, asks their relative long-awaited questions, the Krew takes a moment to wonder what awaits them next in the dark, and what steps to take to get there... On this special LARB Book Club episode of the Radio Hour, Boris Dralyuk and Medaya Ocher are joined by Namwali Serpell, to speak about her new novel, The Furrows. One of the most daring and protean literary voices working today, Serpell is a Zambian-born novelist and essayist, and a professor of English at Harvard University. Her debut novel, The Old Drift, a genre-bending saga tracing the legacies of three families, appeared in 2019 and won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction, and the Los Angeles Times's Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. Her equally unclassifiable — a compliment, that — work of nonfiction, Stranger Faces, appeared the following year, as part of Transit Books' series of Undelivered Lectures, and was a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award. Serpell is also the recipient of a 2020 Windham-Campbell Literature Prize, the 2015 Caine Prize for African Writing, and a 2011 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award. Like The Old Drift, The Furrows defies narrative conventions and readerly expectations, but it does so with a narrower aim in view, homing in on the after-affects — which are, truth be told, manifold — of a particular, though uncertain, trauma, an event that fractures the protagonist's life and sense of self at the age of 12. Blamed for the death of her younger brother, Cassandra is haunted by the presence of his absence — or is it simply his presence? — for the rest of her days. What Serpell's novel tells us is what Cassandra promises to tell us: not what happened, but how it felt. Also, Kathern Scanlan, author of Kick the Latch returns to recommend Charles Reznikoff's Testimony: The United States 1885-1915: Recitative.

Leif Ove Andsnes and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra follow their “triumphant” (Gramophone), “sparkling” (New York Times), and award-winning Mozart Momentum 1785 release with its partner album, focusing on the composer's extraordinary creativity in the year 1786. “When you realize how quickly Mozart developed during the early years of the 1780s, it makes you ask: why did this happen? What was going on? It's about the momentum of his creativity at this time,” says Leif Ove Andsnes. The double-album Mozart Momentum 1786 includes Mozart's Piano Concertos Nos. 23 & 24, Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Piano Trio in B-flat major and Recitative and Aria Ch'io mi scordi di te? featuring guest soprano Christiane Karg. Purchase the music (without talk) at:Mozart Momentum 1786 (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by La Musica International Chamber Music Festival and Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#LaMusicaFestival #CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber Please consider supporting our show, thank you!http://www.classicalsavings.com/donate.html staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson).

IF YOU'RE NEW HERE: You're in the right place! On this podcast, we nerd out on the music & sound of Star Wars 5 cinematic minutes at a time. This season, each episode hyper-focuses on a single 5-minute chunk of A New Hope. Doing so allows us to get really specific about the composition, orchestration, motifs, underscore, ambience, sound design, mixing, dialogue, and most importantly, explore how the sound works in symbiosis with the film as a whole. You don't need to listen to these episodes in order, so feel free to jump around! This episode is also available on YouTube in video format.  Discussion Guide: 0:00:00 - Hello there. 0:02:31 - Layers of sound in Luke's garage. 0:06:59 - Luke's interactions with the droids and what that indicates about his character. 0:12:20 - Threepio introduces himself to Luke. In our tenth episode, we celebrate the genesis of this podcast's main premise. Using a humble and unassuming bit of connecting music from the St. Matthew Passion, Christian shows how Bach portrayed the soul swimming in tears. Love emerges victorious in the last line, where the music reaches a shimmering conclusion. "How can we talk about moments like this?!" That was our question to each other, so that's why we've got a podcast now! "Wiewohl" recitative: https://youtu.be/ZwVW1ttVhuQ?t=1732

In our second episode, Christian introduces the royal processional of the cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland. We celebrate the launch of the podcast with this cantata for the new church year, an early Bach work. But the "moment" is hidden later on, where the young Bach uses an experimental sound: a knock at the door from plucked strings with an unresolved harmony. The voice of Jesus sings "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." BWV 61 bass recitative: https://youtu.be/MzWJsRjanC4?t=571

The folk music of his father's house had combined with the DIY punk ethos of the day and produced his first album, ‘Another Irrelevant Year.' For two decades, Blake toured across the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, and beyond performing concerts to small groups of people in small rooms. In 2017, Blake released his 11th album ‘Recitative,' which earned an A- from The Dean of American Rock Critics, Robert Christgau, who writes, “Chants that riff on the titles WORK, COUPLES, and SINGLE WOMEN are as instantly indelible as the Springsteen, Weill, Reed, and Van Morrison lifts woven in.”Blake's latest release, ‘Ukrainian Phone Call,' features Canada's beat-boxing harmonica poet, C.R. English Diction is our topic this week, covering the texts to "The Roadside Fire" and the aria "Iris, hence away" from Händel's Semele with vocal coach Mark Lawson, contralto Rebecca Raffell and tenor Donald George. Our focus is on what to do with Rs, WH words, the crazy spelling in English and some differences between American Standard and British Received pronunciation. Some of the new phonetic symbols referred to on this episode are [ɝ] and [ɚ] (for those Rs in diphthongs and triphthongs) and [ɒ] (for the British open back rounded vowel). The Roadside Fire is the 11th poem in Robert Louis Stevenson's Songs of Travel and Other Verses (although most of us know it as the 3rd song in Ralph Vaughan Williams' song cycle Songs of Travel). Most of Stevenson's novels, poems and essays are in the public domain and available as free downloads at Project Gutenberg. Here is a libretto for Händel's Semele, for Juno's Aria, scroll down to Accompagnato Nr. 31 "Awake Saturnia from thy lethargy" and Air Nr. 34 "Iris, hence away", skipping over Iris' Recitative in the middle. iTunes University is a free way to "visit" university classes--they have topics ranging from all the classical to modern languages, history, Fine Arts, mathematics, humanities... pretty much anything that universities offer, there's a class on iTunes U for it. Just go to your iTunes Store and look across the top for the heading iTunes U. I also mention the term "Lingua franca" at the beginning of the podcast, and I learned that phrase from iTunes U! Just as a reminder, I refer quite a bit to the two main books on English Diction, Madeleine Marshall's The Singer's Manual of English Diction which has been the standard for many years, and Kathryn LaBouff's Singing and Communicating in English, which covers the differences between American Standard, British Received and the Mid-Atlantic Dialect in great detail. Maybe you haven't noticed, but recitative is treated differently in different  eras of opera history.  Earlier operas utilized harpsichord and other keyboard instruments to accompany recitative, later operas used the full orchestra.  But are operatic characters treated differently, even within the same opera?  Let's explore!
