Can you see the shape of your soul in the everchanging clouds? Your personal salvation in the giant expanse of sky? For the ensemble cast of characters that make up the prairie community at the heart of The Mighty Red, existential questions are constantly close to the surface. In her newest novel, author Louise Erdrich immerses readers in the Red River Valley of the North and the complicated lives of its inhabitants. Argus, North Dakota is a town framed by the 2008 economic crisis, the consequences of climate change, and the dynamics of small-town drama. Thrown into motion by a chaotic teen love triangle and fretting about the future, Erdrich's characters navigate impulsive choices, bitter secrets, and deeply rooted ties to their land and to each other. The Red River Valley is home to dark realities and glimmering hopes, twisting together like winding late-night drives along dimly lit roads. As resources dwindle and viewpoints shift, love and life lurch forward in splendor, catastrophe, and absurdity. Bonds in the community are born and bolstered, disturbed and questioned, broken and mended. Laced with tender humor and humanity in the midst of devastating environmental circumstances, The Mighty Red paints a layered landscape of ordinary people surviving fraught times. Louise Erdrich is an award-winning Native American author and poet whose writing spans novels, short stories, non-fiction, and children's books. Her previously published works include The Plague of Doves, The Round House, and The Night Watchman. She is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and the owner of the Native-focused independent teaching bookstore Birchbark Books in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Karen Russell is the author of five books of fiction, including The New York Times bestsellers Swamplandia! and Vampires in the Lemon Grove. She is a MacArthur Fellow and a Guggenheim Fellow, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, the recipient of two National Magazine Awards for Fiction, the New York Public Library's Young Lions Award, the National Book Foundation's 5 Under 35 award, the Shirley Jackson Award, the 2023 Bottari Lattes Grinzane prize, and the 2024 Mary McCarthy Prize, among other honors. With composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone and choreographer and director Troy Schumacher, she cocreated The Night Falls, listed as one of The New York Times's Best Dance Performances of 2023. She has taught literature and creative writing as a visiting professor at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the University of California–Irvine, Williams College, Columbia University, and Bryn Mawr College, and was the Endowed Chair of Texas State University's MFA program. She serves on the board of Street Books. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, she now lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, son, and daughter. As many as 300,000 child soldiers are currently being forced to fight around the world. The UN deems it a global security issue because radicalized, militant, dehumanized children grow up to be radicalized, militant, dehumanized adults. One of the most egregious episodes in modern history was Joseph Kony's 30-year reign of terror in Uganda, southern Sudan, and Congo as his Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) kidnapped as many as 37,000 boys and girls, turning the males into fearsome, soulless soldiers and the girls into slaves, sexual and otherwise. Two of those young people—Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori—escaped and survived to later bear witness at the LRA war crimes trial in the Hague. Their harrowing and triumphant story is the basis for ALL THE GLIMMERING STARS and was brought to Sullivan by a former squadron commander of SEAL Team 6 and the former CIA chief in Uganda. “In an earlier life I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, and I responded to the tale and the cause immediately. I went to Uganda and spent weeks with Anthony and Florence. I also came away believing that their story brought to life in a novel could have a dramatic impact on the way kids in war zones are treated. To that end, I wrote the novel with the intention that it would not only grip readers with a remarkable story well-told, but also contribute to End Child Soldiering, a non-profit that works to prevent kids being forced into combat and to rehabilitate youngsters who have already suffered that tragedy.”Despite its haunting depiction of the shocking and desperate situation Anthony, Florence and many others endured, ALL THE GLIMMERING STARS is a remarkably life-affirming tale, filled with humanity and love. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Can you give yourself the time to look, To find the treasures where they hide? PAUSE… This type of digging is like no other, the discoveries shimmer like fire. Though the nuggets are smaller than the whole, Their value is so much higher. PAUSE… It might sound strange to see yourself As a hoard of wealth to be mined, But if you consider the value of a life, The price cannot be defined. PAUSE… The work is not for the faint of heart. The process asks a lot. We often toil for years and years, Digging where ‘x' marks the spot. PAUSE… But you are worth the effort, And the gems you find a prize. It's hard to imagine avoiding the search, For a fortune of such size. PAUSE… Clear your mind and try to remember where you buried your riches. Steel yourself for the quest ahead, for the granting of your wishes. LONG PAUSE… You already have the tools you need, To find the jewels within. They may be rusty and awkward to wield, But trust your instincts will kick in. PAUSE… Who knows why we hide these gifts from ourselves. Who knows why we pretend we're bereft. Who knows why we don't see what we can do, Until there are so few options left. PAUSE… Though our struggles are not of our choosing, Their meanings are often our choice. We tell ourselves stories that just aren't true, And never question the voice. PAUSE… That's why the digging matters, Why we need to find the truth. It's not just about the life we live now, But the folly of our youth. PAUSE… Breathe in and imagine those veins of gold, running through your soul. Breathe out as you follow them where they lead, a joyful existence your goal. LONG PAUSE… How did they get there, you want to ask. What creates these precious streaks? The answer lies in our destiny, Our essence shapes what we seek. PAUSE… We all see value differently. We each choose what matters most. But the meaning running beneath those aims, Is what keeps us all afloat. PAUSE… Though we often lose our way, The guideposts are always there. They get buried beneath murky layers Like the gold we long to share. PAUSE… So think of the search as sacred work, A hunt for all we've buried. For all of us, there comes a time To reclaim the gifts we carry. PAUSE… Breathe in and feel the weight of your mettle, the strength that gets you through. Breathe out and see how deep it runs, and how much it helps you do. LONG PAUSE… But what if it feels like too much toil, Like you'll never have the might? What if you doubt what's possible, And see no purpose for the fight? PAUSE… The questions aren't unreasonable. In fact, they make perfect sense. But they also mean you're hiding your light, Suffering at your own expense. PAUSE… So, what if you did things differently? What if you stepped out into the light? What if you saw your own riches, Glimmering in plain sight? PAUSE… And what if, instead of covering them up, You gathered your inner jewels? What if you built a glittering new path, And threw away all the rules? PAUSE… Inhale and push forward, inspired and free. Exhale and keep going, aware of all you can be. LONG PAUSE… And as with all true veins of gold, Your wealth flows down from above. Sharing your fortune with all in your midst, And enriching the earth with your love. PAUSE…

PAUSE… Mining isn't easy, Though neither is anything worthwhile. And once you've started the searching, The effort will make you smile. PAUSE…

Over the past few weeks, I've often noticed the part of me that longs for silence, for inner coherence in a fractured world. The part that doesn't want to say a word that could disturb the air, nor add an ounce of the weight in my heart (the inverse of hope, which Emily Dickinson described as “the thing with feathers”) to the too-delicate balance of so many others' hearts. It takes time, integrity, and inner resource to orient toward the din of humanity's anguish and rage. Our prefrontal empathic sensors weren't built for this scale. In some moments, usually toward evening, I've found myself in an inarticulate withdrawal, like a simple sea-thing. I've watched the trees bare themselves to the elements as they curl warmly inward and noticed within myself a seasonal instinct toward self-preservation. “We have seasons when the leaves fall from us, revealing our bare bones,” writes Katherine May.Mary Oliver once wrote, “I hardly move, though really I'm traveling a terrific distance.” At surface, I may appear as though distracted (in fact, I'm accustomed to being interpreted as aloof and have worked with the resulting relational nuances throughout my life). My people, the ones who know me well, have learned over the years to soften toward my tendency to slip into the primordial. They understand the moments when I'm at once far away and too near. These moments might sound unproductive, even myopic — like pressing an ear into the oceanic drone of a shell. But they are really seasons of integration and calibration.Joy Harjo's poem, “For Calling the Spirit Back from Wandering the Earth in Its Human Feet” begins with the indelible imperative “put down that bag of potato chips,” and counsels:“Call upon the help of those who love you. These helpers take many forms: animal, element, bird, angel, saint, stone, or ancestor. Call your spirit back. It may be caught in corners and creases of shame, judgment, and human abuse. You must call in a way that your spirit will want to return. Speak to it as you would to a beloved child.”Stop anesthetizing, the poet says. Call upon the help of those who love you. Call to your spirit as you would to a beloved child. The first of the Four Noble Truths (which meditation teacher Henry Shukman re-phrases as “ennobling tasks”) is the truth of suffering. The truth of suffering is the host who meets us at the door of spiritual practice. To step in, we must allow ourselves to feel — or, in David Whyte's words, to “[turn] down through…black waters to the place we cannot breathe.”**Those who will not slip beneath    the still surface on the well of grief, turning down through its black water    to the place we cannot breathe, will never know the source from which we drink,    the secret water, cold and clear, nor find in the darkness glimmering,    the small round coins,          thrown by those who wished for something else.-David Whyte, “The Well of Grief”**[A disclaimer from your therapist friend here: skillful means are necessary to come into relationship with any “unbreathable” place. Titration helps. For example, we can find internal presence, touch into a feeling briefly, and then guide our attention back outward, noticing light, objects, colors, sensory input, etc. If there's the potential for trauma triggering, practice this with professional support.]As shunya is to purna, emptiness to wholeness, depths of quiet can open us, ultimately, to the great hum of our common wellbeing. In this native place, with its “secret water, cold and clear,” we can offer our broken bits to the healing source. We can learn to drink, to receive.Kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery. If a bowl is broken, rather than discarding the pieces, urushi sap is mixed with gold, silver, or platinum and applied to the faults. The wound is tended with lacquer, skill, and utmost care. And thus, wholeness and transformation — a seasoned beauty — is reclaimed. The art of mending pottery symbolizes what David Whyte describes as “find[ing] in the darkness glimmering, the small round coins thrown by those who wished for something else.” It's what Joy Harjo refers to as the practice of “calling the spirit back.” Our task is to listen deeply in order to remember — to piece back together — our willingness to feel and to be felt. The beauty is in finding and being re-found.It's a grace in my life that my people know when to take my hands and call me back. Friends: we must do this, at times, for each other. We must love each other well enough to know, when necessary, how to call each other back. Courage is our sap. Get full access to The Guest House at shawnparell.substack.com/subscribe

LONG PAUSE And now that your body is relaxing, And its tension is releasing,  you turn inward, and take a moment  to feel gratitude, true appreciation for your life and for all of you. So, let's begin. See if you can imagine a gold picture frame In your center. And in the frame, an image begins to form, Like a puzzle with pieces And all the shapes coming together. PAUSE As the pieces of the image gather, A scene unfolds, A memory that stirs your heart  And overflows it with The deepest love you've known. Be here, Present and open to that pure love. Phantom Electric Ghost Interviews Joy Uyeno Storyteller How to Survive a Spiritual Awakening Biography Joy Uyeno is an award-winning storyteller from Hawaii, currently living in New England. She uses real-life experiences to craft stories that demonstrate the magic at work in our everyday lives. Her podcast mini series "The Glimmering" was listed among the top 75 spirituality podcasts within its first two weeks of release. She is currently at work on her debut novel. Link: http://theglimmeringpod.com/ At this website, you'll find links to The Glimmering podcast, which is a valuable resource for those who are navigating their own spiritual awakenings. Through a series of intertwined true stories, Joy weaves together signs, synchronicities, and mystical experiences in a way that helps listeners to become more aware of the magic at work in their own lives. About Joy Topics: Grief, spiritual awakening, spirit guides, past life hypnosis, storytelling, mediumship, psychic development, and relationships. In the spring of 2020, a box arrived on my doorstep containing a lavender journal that someone named Jack had given me 18 years earlier. It was just one of many signs prompting me to get in touch with him. I thought I was being told to wrap up my loose ends, because Covid was rampant here. He lived in a place that had not seen a single case. A week after we reconnected, I went running and for hours afterward, I couldn't catch my breath. The next morning, I found out Jack had died within those same hours the day before. Ten days later, I had my first ever reading with a medium. Among the evidence she shared of Jack's continued existence, she said, "He's showing me a lavender journal. He says to keep writing to him in it. He says he'll be reading every word." This experience opened up a doorway that filled my life with magic. My spiritual awakening, and my experience as a writer, photographer, and podcaster, has given me the opportunity to share what I've come to learn about: - How to create community in the midst of a spiritual awakening. - How to see grief as a gift with he power to transform our lives if we allow ourselves to sit in it and uncover all the painful truths that are waiting to present themselves to us. - How to collaborate with your spirit guides and loved ones on the other side. - How breathwork, meditation, automatic writing, and past life hypnosis are therapeutic pathways in healing from our grief and trauma. - How to begin your own healing journey - How to navigate through a spiritual awakening while in a relationship with a skeptic I know that spiritual awakenings and dark nights of the souls can be extremely lonely and difficult to navigate. Welcome to the latest news and updates from GM Web3. In this episode, we discuss NFT sentiments, news, and a special guest, TheGlimmering. The crypto market has been experiencing major volatility in interest rates, with swings of up to 10% day to day. BTC touched 27k, a great sign, while ETH hit 1750. Alt coins are lagging and not performing, but they are following the two big coins. The team is unsure why crypto is rallying.Things are not great on the NFT front, with Mutants and otherdeeds dropping. The team's fallen angels, including doodles, clones, moon birds, and cool cats, are not doing great, and this period is described as "the bleeding." However, the stage is hopeful about CloneX, and RTFKT Fud has been weak.In this space, as a founder or creator, understanding community sentiment is crucial. There are both profit-focused and emotionally vested members in most of these communities. You vote with your wallet, and your conviction is represented by your 0x address. The summoning from Yuga happened, with the new assets trading at 2.14 ETH. Farokh shared a stage with CryptoGarga in NFT PARIS, and was told the Dookey Dash game grew the Yuga ecosystem by 40%! There was a big power source sale for 45 ETH, but it's unknown what's inside.Degods ordinals are kicking off, with the original frank asset sold for the equivalent of 50 ETH. There was some fud around the .44 BTC price, but the counterargument is the actual floor price of DeGodsNFT, which is around 6.5 ETH.Redbeardnft has decided to live forever and inscribed his soul onto the BTC blockchain. If you see him, you can now refer to him as inscription 492293. He is one with Satoshi! The team was joined by The glimmering and J1mmy.eth, who is bringing the Bored Apes into their glimmering world. The on-chain game platform is launching on March 30th, with 43k custom artwork layers in the project with custom sound/animations. The mutant apes were seen as a perfect villain for the humans in "Ocelot," the world. Inspirations for the Glimmering lean heavily into Dungeons & Dragons. Ancestries, weapons, soundtracks, and detailed hairstyles are all included, and the team uses the 5e TTRPG rule set created by D&D.0xPolygon was chosen for the Glimmering game, with all data stored on-chain, from dice rolls to hit points. The actual NFT will morph over time based on the data acquired from playing the game. Rug radio is bullish on Polygon and its carbon-neutral efforts. This is another great example of IP being used in a positive way. Ape assets are brought into the game, which has been a goal for the entire space when it comes to gaming and IP. That's it for the latest news and updates from GM Web3.GM! Hosted on Acast. Utah skiing was Park City and Alta; Snowbird in the ‘70s; Deer Valley in the ‘80s; sometimes Solitude and Brighton. No need to ski outside that powder pocket east of SLC: in 1995, an Alta lift ticket cost $25, and the area resorts frequently landed on ski magazine “least-crowded” lists. The November 2000 issue of Ski distilled Snowbasin's malaise:Though skiers were climbing the high ridgeline that overlooks the small city of Ogden as far back as the Thirties, Alta founder Alf Engen officially discovered Snowbasin in 1940. At that time the high, sunny basin was used for cattle range, but it was so overgrazed that eroded topsoil and bloated carcasses of dead cows were tainting Ogden's water supply. Working with the U.S. Forest Service, Ogden's town fathers decided that a ski resort would provide income and recreation while also safeguarding the water supply. A deal was struck with the ranch owner, and Snowbasin opened for business. In the 60 years since, the resort has struggled under five owners, including Vail-founder Pete Seibert, who owned it in the mid-Eighties. The problem was a lack of lodging. Snowbasin was too far from Salt Lake City to attract out-of-state skiers and too far from Ogden to use the city's aging railroad center as a resort base. Successive owners realized that to succeed, Snowbasin needed a base village, but building one from scratch is a costly proposition. So for half a century, the resort has remained the private powder stash of Ogden locals and the few lucky skiers who have followed rumors of deep snow and empty lifts up Ogden Canyon. In 1984, Earl Holding, an oil tycoon who had owned Sun Valley since 1978, purchased the resort from Seibert (process the fact that Snowbasin was once part of the Vail portfolio for a moment). For a long time, nothing much changed. Then came the 2002 Olympics. In a single offseason in 1998, the resort added two gondolas, a tram, and a high-speed quad (John Paul), along with the thousand-ish-acre Strawberry terrain pod. A new access road cut 13 miles off the drive from Salt Lake City. Glimmering base lodges rose from the earth.Still, Snowbasin languished. “But despite the recent addition of modern lifts, it has still failed to attract more than 100,000 skier visits the past two seasons,” Ski wrote in 2000, attributing this volume partly to “the fact that the Olympics, not today's lift ticket revenue, is the management's priority.” Holding, the magazine reported, was considering a bizarre name change for the resort to “Sun Valley.” As in, Sun Valley, Utah. Reminder: there was no social media in 2000.That's all context, to make this point: the Snowbasin that I'm writing about today – a glimmering end-of-the-road Ikon Pass jewel with a Jetsonian lift fleet – is not the Snowbasin we were destined to have. From backwater to baller in a generation. This is the template, like it or not, for the under-developed big-mountain West. Vail Mountain, Park City, Snowbird, Palisades Tahoe, Breckenridge, Steamboat: these places cannot accommodate a single additional skier. They're full. The best they can do now is redistribute skiers across the mountain and suck more people out of the base areas with higher-capacity lifts. But with record skier visits and the accelerating popularity of multi-mountain passes that concentrate more of them in fewer places, we're going to need relief valves. And soon. There are plenty more potential Snowbasins out there. Mountains with big acreage and big snowfall but underdeveloped lift and lodging infrastructure and various tiers of accessibility issues: White Pass, Mission Ridge, Silver Mountain, Montana Snowbowl, Great Divide, Discovery, Ski Apache, Angel Fire, Ski Santa Fe, Powder Mountain, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Loveland. There are dozens more.Snowbasin's story is singular and remarkable, a testament to invested owners and the power of media magnification to alter the fate of a place. But the mountain's tale is instructive as well, of how skiing can reorient itself around something other than our current version of snowy bunchball, the tendency for novice soccer players to disregard positions and swarm to wherever the ball moves. Snowbasin didn't matter and now it does. Who's next? What we talked aboutUtah's amazing endless 2022-23 snow season; an Irish fairytale; skiing Beaver Mountain in jeans; helping to establish Utah's Major League Soccer team and then leaving for the ski industry; “if you have a chance to raise your family in the mountains, you should do that”; the unique characteristic of a ski career that helps work-life balance; much love for the Vail Fam; the Holding family legacy; “Snowbasin is a gift to the world”; the family's commitment to keeping Snowbasin independent long-term; “they're going to put in the best possible things, all the time”; amazing lodges, bathrooms and all; Snowbasin's Olympic legacy and potential future involvement in the Games; breaking down the DeMoisy Express six-pack that will go up Strawberry this summer; what the new lift will mean for the Strawberry gondola; soccer fans versus ski fans; managing a resort in the era of knucklehead social media megaphones; “I've lost a lot of employees to guests”; taming the rumor machine; reflecting on the Middle Bowl lift upgrade; long-term upgrades for the Becker and Porcupine triples; Snowbasin's ambitious base-area redevelopment plan, including an all-inclusive Club Med, new lifts and terrain, and upgraded access road; “the amount of desire to own something here is huge”; what happens with parking once the mountain builds a village over it; the curse of easy access; breaking down the new beginner terrain and lifts that will accompany the village; whether future large-scale terrain expansion is possible; and leaving the Epic Pass for Ikon and Mountain Collective. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewLast month, Snowbasin announced that it will build the DeMoisy Express, a long-awaited six-pack that will run parallel to the Strawberry Gondola on a slightly shorter line, for the 2023-24 ski season. Here's where it will sit on the current trailmap (highlighted below):This will be Snowbasin's second six-pack in just two years, and it follows the resort's 2021 announcement of an ambitious base-area development plan, which will include new beginner terrain, several new lifts, a mixed-use pedestrian village, access-road improvements, and an all-inclusive Club Med resort. Here's a rendering of the reconfigured base at full build-out:Snowbasin, along with sister resort Sun Valley, also stalked off the Epic Pass last year, fleeing for the Mountain Collective and Ikon passes. “Because we're smart,” Ratchford half-joked when I asked him why the resorts left Epic after just three years. He framed the switch as an opportunity to expose the resorts to new skiers. Snowbasin surely will not be the last resort to change allegiances. Don't think big indies like Jackson Hole, Taos, and Revelstoke aren't listening when Vail calls, offering them a blank check to change jerseys. What I got wrongI had an on-the-fly moment where I mixed up the Wildcat Express six-pack and the Littlecat Express high-speed quad. I asked Ratchford how they were going to upgrade Little Cat (as suggested in the base-area redevelopment image above), when it was already a six-pack. Dumb stuff happens in the moment during these podcasts, and while I guess I could ask the robots to fix it, I'd rather just own the mistake and keep moving. Why you should ski SnowbasinI love skiing Alta and Snowbird, but I don't love skiing anywhere enough to endure the mass evacuation drill that is a Cottonwoods powder-day commute. Not when there's a place like Snowbasin where you can just, you know, pull into the parking lot and go skiing. What you'll find when you arrive is as good as anything you'll hunt down in U.S. skiing. Maybe not from a total snowfall perspective – though 300 inches is impressive anywhere outside of Utah – but from a lift-and-lodge infrastructure point of view. Four – soon to be five – high-speed chairlifts, a tram and two gondolas, and a couple old triple chairs that Ratchford tells me will be replaced fairly soon, and probably with high-speed quads. The lodges are legendary, palaces of excess and overbuild, welcome in an industry that makes Lunch-Table Death-Match a core piece of the experience. If you need to take your pet elephant to the bathroom, plug Snowbasin into your GPS – I assure you the stalls can accommodate them. But, really, you ski Snowbasin because Snowbasin is easy to get to and easy to access, with the Ikon Pass that most people reading this probably already have, and with terrain that's as good as just about anything else you're going to find in U.S. America.Podcast NotesOn Park City: Ratchford referred obliquely to the ownership change at Park City in 2014, saying, “if you know the history there…” Well, if you don't know the history there, longtime resort owner Powdr Corp made the biggest oopsie in the history of lift-served skiing when it, you know, forgot to renew its lease on the mountain. Vail, in what was the most coldblooded move in the history of lift-served skiing, installed itself as the new lessee in what I can imagine was a fit of cackling glee. It was amazing. You can read more about it here and here. If only The Storm had existed back then.On the Olympics: While I don't cover the Olympics at all (I completely ignored them last year, the first Winter Games in which The Storm existed), I do find their legacy at U.S. ski resorts interesting. Only five U.S. ski areas have hosted events: Whiteface (1980), Palisades Tahoe (1960), and, in 2002, Deer Valley, Park City, and Snowbasin. Ratchford and I talk a bit about this legacy, and the potential role of his resort in the upcoming 2030 or 2034 Games – Salt Lake City is bidding to host one or the other. Read more here.On megapasses: Snowbasin has been all over the place with megapasses. Here's its history, as best I can determine:* 2013: Snowbasin joins the Powder Alliance reciprocal coalition (it is unclear when Snowbasin left this coalition)* 2017: Snowbasin joins Mountain Collective for 2017-18 ski season* 2019: Snowbasin joins Epic Pass, leaves Mountain Collective for 2019-20 ski season* 2022: Snowbasin leaves Epic Pass, re-joins Mountain Collective and joins Ikon Pass for 2022-23 ski seasonThe Storm publishes year-round, and guarantees 100 articles per year. For Light ~ John O'Donohue Light cannot see inside things. That is what the dark is for: Minding the interior, Nurturing the draw of growth Through places where death In its own way turns into life. On the glare of neon times, Let our eyes not be worn By surfaces that shine With hunger made attractive. That our thoughts may be true light, Finding their way into words Which have the weight of shadow To hold the layers of truth. That we never place our trust In minds claimed by empty light, Where one-sided certainties Are driven by false desire. When we look into the heart, May our eyes have the kindness And reverence of candlelight. That the searching of our minds Be equal to the oblique Crevices and corners where The mystery continues to dwell, Glimmering in fugitive light. When we are confined inside The dark house of suffering That moonlight might find a window. When we become false and lost That the severe noon-light Would cast our shadow clear. When we love, the dawn-light Would lighten our feet Upon the waters. As we grow old, that twilight Would illuminate treasure In the fields of memory. And when we come to search for God, Let us first be robed in night, Put on the mind of morning To feel the rush of light Spread slowly inside The color and stillness Of a found world.

This week is the pay off for our time learning about how to research. Chris Kimball has explained how one can search for knowledge on the internet and at libraries. He's talked about how he takes that knowledge and uses it to tell a fuller story of the Second Seminole War. This week, Chris Kimball shares the anecedotes and curious stories about players in the Seminole War -- people and stories he countered in his research.   In this episode, listeners will hear about Osceola and the fate of his head and his belongings. They will learn about military inventions or improvements -- land mines and pontoon bridges -- that later came into their own in the American Civil War. They will learn how the Army armed the Seminole by treaty with 2,200 Derringer small-caliber and percussion capped rifles while supply Halls breach-loading musket-rifles that proved easier to reload while horse riding but which tended to break easily or worse, explode. And they will learn about how tempers flare and people die, needlessly and foolishly, and blood fueds are begun...and finished after originating in service in the Seminole Wars. .    Above, Gabriel Rains designed mines (then called torpedoes) that he used in the Second Seminole War and refined later for use in the Civil War. This illustration is a representation of an explosion. Above, one can find these Jaeger rifles at the Florida Historical Society in Cocoa. They were a coda to a blood fued begun over insurbination and disobedience in the chain of command of territorial militia mobilized for the Florida War. The back story is fascinating and Chris Kimball handles its complexities with aplomb. The Jäger rifle was one the most balanced and compact rifles, very characteristic for its big caliber; equipped with double set trigger, it was very precise, able to shoot big balls having a very high energy. The Jäger rifle was first made in the flintlock version and only afterwards it was transformed to a percussion rifle.   Chris Kimball's sleuthing led him to discover that contrary to a headstone in Pensacola (above)that says it contains Major Dade's only daughter, in fact he had another child, a daughter, who died as a toddler. After sharing their commonplace quotes, Angelina, Thomas, and Cindy dive into the topics at hand, including but not limited to the following: Clarisse’s role as a Beatrice character, the gift of inspiration versus the gift of interpretation in art, living in an age of distraction, the passing down of cultural memory, and leisure as the basis of education. Commonplace Quotes: Long and delicate maneuverings had bred in him a habit of deceit, and his success had convinced him that in politics, dishonesty was but a venial offense. J. D. Mackie “I would not have you think I was doing nothing then.” He might, perhaps, have studied more assiduously; but it may be doubted whether such a mind as his was not more enriched by roaming at large in the fields of literature than if it had been confined to any single spot. The analogy between body and mind is very general, and the parallel will hold as to their food, as well as any other particular. The flesh of animals who feed excursively, is allowed to have a higher flavour than that of those who are cooped up. May there not be the same difference between men who read as their taste prompts and men who are confined in cells and colleges to stated tasks? James Boswell, quoting Samuel Johnson Interviewer: How does the story of Fahrenheit 451 stand up in 1994? Ray Bradbury: It works even better because we have political correctness now. Political correctness is the real enemy these days….It’s thought control and freedom of speech control. Ray Bradbury Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold The sea is calm tonight. In this episode, we’re talking about kids and media consumption - what does science say about screen time? How do we sort out the fear mongering from the useful data? What are our own practices in the Camacho household, and what might we want to change? Leslie introduces the topic with some thoughts on the balance of screen time and other activities. We talk about how we want our kids to enjoy a wide variety of activities without relying on digital media to keep themselves entertained. Laura presents her thoughts on the research on screen time. The data is inconclusive. While scientists have made some observations in some populations, even those are not consistent across all populations. Laura rants about the tons of junk "science" reports acting like correlation is causation, and villifying screen time as the source of all evil and unhappiness in the world. The bottom line is, this is a new area of research and it's going to take probably another decade to be able to make any conclusive statements. The only evidence that shocked Laura was that across many studies, kids are apparently averaging around 6-8 hours of entertainment (not including in-school or homework-related) screentime per day. The Camacho household limits kids to 2 hours of screen-based entertainment on most days, so this left us feeling like maybe our concerns about how much time our kids are on screens are misplaced! If you read nothing else on the subject of screentime, this NPR interview with Jordan Shapiro, a Temple University professor whose background is in philosophy and psychology, is golden. Shapiro's guiding principle of parenting in the digital age is engagement and relationship. Laura loved this because it goes back to the basics of episode 80: the most important indicator of raising successful adults is parents who created a warm, trusting, emotionally-connected/involved relationship with their kids. We need to do this for our kids within the digital world. We have to engage digital content alongside our kids, and teach them when they are very young how to be discerning of the content they consume, compassionate in their treatment of the people hidden by their avatars, etc. Leslie takes a turn ranting about privacy issues, brain hacking, and the general evilness of Big Tech - knowledge from which we should not shelter our kids. We circle back to a sense of optimism: This isn't as fraught as it seems; we just have to be realistic about our situation. We have entered the digital age, we are parents of the digital age, and our parenting is going to have to evolve if it’s going to be effective. Ironically, that evolution only needs to widen the same basic principles of good parenting (connection, trust, conversation) to include the digital world.Support Glimmering PodcastLinks:Forget Screen Time Rules — Lean In To Parenting Your Wired Child, Author Says : NPR — If we want to get rid of the horrible stuff happening on Twitter right now, then we need to model it for kids when they're 7 and all they want to do is be like their parents. This is the third and final part of the Awkward Social Justice series. In this episode, we talk about how to take everything we’ve discussed in the first two episodes of this series and channel those things into meaningful action and change. We’re taking the ideological to the practical. We’re newbies at activism, but our gifts are connecting and synthesizing resources, so we’re going to put our efforts out into the world to effect change within our sphere of influence. At root and most simply, that’s what activism really is. Check out our extensive resource list in the show notes! The worksheet Leslie did in this episode is The Americans of Conscience Action Worksheet by Jen Hofmann. We have setup a dedicated Activism - Getting Started page on Glimmering.com that we'll be updating on a regular basis. The Newsletter is "... a compendium of gifs, links to good writing, my work for that week, a few photos, and a recipe. He wants to be like Anil when he grows up. — I’m a technology entrepreneur, activist, and writer focused on making the tech world more humane and ethical. Having created Internet technologies for two decades, I’ve become obsessed with the way technology shapes and transforms society, media, government and culture. Show Summary In this episode Joel and Leslie talk husband to husband, human to human about what to do when tragedy derails your plans and impacts your life. It’s genuine, heartfelt, and practical. Joel’s advice is also unexpected and deeply humanizing. It’s a must listen, especially if you have a “just push through it” personality. You can find out more about Joel and his work at Relaunch over at RelaunchShow.com (highly recommended). React to this like a person, not like a good little solider. – Joel Boggess, Relaunch The Details Normally, I’m joined by my co-host and amazing wife Laura who is the co-founder of Glimmering and Wild Goose Guidance. But this episode is a first for two reasons. First, it’s our first episode with a guest that isn’t related to us! I’m very grateful to be speaking with Joel Boggess – one half of the team behind the creation, development, and explosive growth of ReLaunch, a podcast that interviews the hottest and most in-demand personal development experts and business thought-leaders to bring you fresh ideas, inspiring stories, and most importantly, practical steps that help you start over with confidence. Just recently Relaunch was listed in the “Top 5 podcasts for inspiration” by the Huffington post. And, Relaunch made it into Inc.’s top 20 business podcasts for 2015. Joel is a specialist at helping people “relaunch” a book or podcast, and reach number 1 in their categories and get their message out to not just a big audience, but the right audience. Originally, Laura and I were going to pick Joel’s brain on the work we’re doing with Marriage Startup and especially Laura’s work on Wild Goose Guidance, but that got unexpected derailed. Which brings us to our second first: This is the first episode without Laura. Yesterday, a close friend of the family received news that their mom has cancer. It has thrown all of us for a loop and Laura has jumped in to help however she can. Show Summary In this series, we’re exploring what it means to stick to your values while being free to let your culture change… sometimes daily. We based this discussion off Matt Blumberg’s wonderful article, The Difference Between Culture and Values. This episode is part two – where we work to define our family and business values. In a blind interview, open script, we discuss three of the values we chose for Glimmering and for our family. There’s some overlap and a number that caught the other by surprise but were instantly acknowledged as vital – just not on their radar. We gave the discussion plenty of time, so we’ll try to wrap up next week when we discuss how to put the values into action. Values Discussed Family Grace (Leslie & Laura) Inclusiveness (Leslie) Compassion (Laura) Inquisitiveness (Laura) “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction” (Leslie) Glimmering LLC Authentic (Leslie) Cultivate Joy (Laura) Do the work (Leslie) Champion the Good (Laura) Change (Leslie) Demonstrate Balance (Laura) Show Resources Heather Petit’s values triads. The posts linked below are the originating posts, but she has many others showing these in action (use the categories to navigate). Heather is a brilliant parent; she captures a heart-centered systemization approach that has been absolutely inspiring to me. She and her husband, Will, practice kaizen in their parenting as well as their marriage. It’s an honor to know them (if only virtually!). Safe, Respectful, Kind – for the core physical processes, and the main experience of the early years – pregnancy through Kindergarten or so. It covers health, self/integrity, empathy. Effective, Prudent, Truthful  – for the understanding of self and action, choice, decision-making, and the intersection between self and other – any other. Not yet to relationship, though the edges of all overlap. Starting around first grade, this matches the social and emotional development – up through middle school, I’d say.  This covers will, choice, and identity. Acceptant, Loving, Faithful – for interrelating over the longer term, for marriage, for children, for the people with whom we choose to have relationships. Master of None – As explained by Merv & Trey, our friends over at Culture Slash. Support Glimmering Podcast

Matthew Arnold read by Classic Poetry Aloud www.classicpoetryaloud.com Twitter: @classicpoetry Facebook: www.facebook.com/poetryaloud Giving voice to the poetry of the past. --------------------------------------------------- Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold (1822 – 1888) The sea is calm to-night. The tide is full, the moon lies fair Upon the straits; on the French coast the light Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand; Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay. Come to the window, sweet is the night-air! Only, from the long line of spray Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land, Listen! you hear the grating roar Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling, At their return, up the high strand, Begin, and cease, and then again begin, With tremulous cadence slow, and bring The eternal note of sadness in. Sophocles long ago Heard it on the A gaean, and it brought Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow Of human misery; we Find also in the sound a thought, Hearing it by this distant northern sea. The Sea of Faith Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled. But now I only hear Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar, Retreating, to the breath Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear And naked shingles of the world. Ah, love, let us be true To one another! for the world, which seems To lie before us like a land of dreams, So various, so beautiful, so new, Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light, Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; And we are here as on a darkling plain Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, Where ignorant armies clash by night.
