Journey back to the height of summer and the Grand Départ in Florence with our Tour de France team of Mitch Docker, Richard Abraham and Graham Willgoss. They were there to witness Tadej Pogačar's domination, a record-breaking 35th stage win for Mark Cavendish, and a historic trio of stage wins for green jersey winner Biniam Girmay. They also endured the horror of ‘the kebab shop hotel', soaked up the sights, sounds and flavours of France, and almost ran out of gas before the Tour concluded in Nice. On the eve of Time Magazine naming its ‘Person of the Year' for 2024, we offer absolutely no surprises by naming Tadej Pogačar our man of the year just past. ‘Pog' has been briefing the media on what to expect from him in 2025 - and Fran Reyes has been on the ground in Spain taking notes. In this episode, Fran tells Daniel Friebe and Richard Abraham what he's heard from the Slovenian and some of those who either masterminded or assisted his all-conquering season. Before all of that, we also discuss the two main news headlines of the week: Patrick Lefevere leaving his CEO position at Soudal-Quick Step and Tom Pidcock signing for Q36.5. We get into the festive spirit with an ‘Advent' episode celebrating not the impending arrival of a king of kings…but the emergence of several would-be stars in the world of professional cycling in 2024. Daniel Friebe is joined by award-winning commentator Rob Hatch and young Richard Abraham – plus there's a début for ace ‘stato' Cillian Kelly – as we review breakthrough seasons for the likes of Isaac del Toro, Oscar Onley and more. We also hear from Onley's DSM Firmenich-PostNL directeur sportif Matt Winston and a man who has burst onto the scene in recent weeks…with the help of Strava. We continue our review of the men's 2024 professional season, this week focussing on the riders, teams and trends that had a year to forget. After Daniel's controversial suggestion last week that it was in fact such a bad year that it was a good one for INEOS Grenadiers, who will come under the spotlight this time around? Rob Hatch has at least one nomination for a team that fared worse than the Brits - while Richard Abraham is blowing raspberries at the whole, once great cycling nation of France after its lacklustre few months. Cofidis certainly didn't wow anyone in 2024 - and we hear from one of their departing riders, Harrison Wood, about why it became an annus horribilis for that team. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by Rob Hatch and Richard Abraham, as we kick off our series of 2024 season review episodes. This year the boys' task was simple: come up with a list of riders, teams, trends and concepts for whom 2024 was a memorable year, preferably without dwelling too much on the exploits of a certain Slovenian. The nominations were whimsical, surprising and in some cases provocative. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by François Thomazeau & Richard Abraham, as we deliver our verdict on the newly minted 2025 men's & women's Tour de France routes. François is in Paris to catch up with old friends and familiarise himself with the new Tour parcours. We discuss whether it really is a Jean-Marie Leblanc tribute Tour, how delighted Tadej Pogačar should be this evening…& why François may soon have to learn to love La Plagne. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is on Fran Reyes's home turf - Granada in southern Spain - and that pair is joined by Richard Abraham for another week of analysis and reflection on, yes, yet another Tadej Pogačar masterpiece, this time at the Tour of Lombardy. The build-up to the final Monument of the season had been enlivened or overshadowed - depending on your viewpoint - by Tom Pidcock's shock exclusion from the INEOS line-up. We examine the likely consequences of that - and the possible reasons. It's then time for another attempt to contextualise arguably the finest cycling season of all time by a male rider, and certainly the most extraordinary since Eddy Merckx's ‘cannibalistic' reign. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by Larry Warbasse of Décathlon-AG2r La Mondiale and journalist Richard Abraham, as we review the action from a soggy Giro dell'Emilia last weekend in Bologna - home of the cured meat known there as ‘mortadella' & in the USA as, ahem, baloney. No surprise, it was the newly crowned world champion, Tadej Pogačar, who would bring home the, er, oversized bacon-like sausage - quite literally as a large lump of the stuff was among his prizes. We discuss that, look forward to Saturday's Il Lombardia & also hear from Taco van der Hoorn about his remarkable comeback victory at the Betcity Elfstedenrace last week. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by Richard Abraham & Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch, as we look back at the World TT champs last Sunday and ahead to the men's elite road race at the weekend. Remco Evenepoel's victory sealed an historic Olympic-Worlds TT double…but the Belgian could yet achieve an even unlikelier feat if he adds Sunday's road race title to the gold medal he earned in Paris in August. Tadej Pogačar nonetheless remains the favourite - and a first world title for him at the weekend would complete a remarkable sequence of his own: the same Giro-Tour-Worlds ‘Triple Crown' that only Eddy Merckx and Stephen Roche have achieved before in men's cycling. The British team will hope that neither Pog nor Remco leaves Zürich with the (RR) rainbow jersey - and their head coach, Matt Brammeier, tells us what to expect on Sunday from the likes of Pidcock, the Yates brothers and Stephen Williams. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by Richard Abraham & Swiss journalist Emil Bischofberger to look ahead to next week's World Cycling & Para-cycling Championships in Emil's home town, Zürich. We discuss the city's, ahem, generally lukewarm feelings about the Worlds & whether they may have changed in just over a week's time. We also look at the courses & zero in on the home nation's medal hopes, which rest mainly on the shoulders of Marc Hirschi. Also - & perhaps most importantly - what's Tina Turner got to do with it? With the Giro d'Italia now in the rear-view mirror Tadej Pogačar can afford to put his feet up (relatively-speaking) and watch how his likely rivals for the Tour de France fare in their final warm-up races. He handed over the baton to Graham Willgoss, who will be part of our Tour de France team alongside Richard Abraham and Mitch Docker. In this episode of Arrivée, Daniel Friebe and RIchard Abraham reflect on a 2024 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège that had been billed as a clash of the Titans between the two outstanding riders of the season so far, world champion Mathieu van der Poel and 2021 Liège winner Tadej Pogačar. With the Amstel Gold and Flèche Wallonne winners, Tom Pidcock and Stephen Williams, also on the starting grid, Pogačar and Van der Poel perhaps weren't going to have it all their own way. In this episode of Arrivée, Daniel Friebe and RIchard Abraham review a brutal edition of Flèche Wallonne, ridden in the rain and plummeting temperatures. After his victory in Amstel Gold at the weekend, could the pre-race favourite Tom Pidcock live up to that billing and complete an historic double? Or would someone else - perhaps one of the many previous winners in the field, like Dylan Teuns or Marc Hirschi - conquer the Mur de Huy? buycycle Arrivée is brought to you by buycycle – the online marketplace for used bikes, where cyclists buy and sell pre-loved bikes with complete confidence. In this week's regular episode of the The Cycling Podcast, Richard Abraham and Rob Hatch join Daniel Friebe to look back on Sunday's Amstel Gold Race - before Décathlon-AG2R Mondiale stalwart Larry Warbasse reports from his pre-Giro d'Italia altitude camp on Mount Etna. After a challenging start to the season for INEOS Grenadiers, Tom Pidcock's victory in Amstel on Sunday was balm for the British team's morale and confidence. We ask whether it could also be a watershed moment in the Yorkshireman's career - particularly with this year's Tour de France in mind. Larry's eyes and focus are set firmly on the Giro - and, in the last part of the podcast, the “Motown Maestro” reveals how he and team leader Ben O' Connor have built towards ‘La Corsa Rosa'. Richard Abraham was in France to see whether MvdP could add a sixth Monument to his palmarès - or whether a cast of challengers headed by Mads Pedersen was able to thwart him. The episode also features a unique insight into Bahrain Victorious leader Fred Wright's recon of the Roubaix cobbles last week. buycycle Arrivée is supported by buycycle. In this week's regular episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is again joined by journalist Richard Abraham and former Classics maestro Mitch Docker, as we revisit the men's Tour of Flanders on Sunday and review some of the more salient and controversial talking points from ‘Vlaanderens Mooiste'. Mathieu van der Poel's third Flanders victory was his most emphatic to date, but his triumphant solo move on the Koppenberg - while others floundered in his wake - also raised questions about whether that iconic climb should be removed from the Ronde course. We discuss this, Michael Matthews' relegation in the sprint for the minor places, plus the accomplished performances of Movistar and runner-up Luca Mozzato. In the last part of the episode, thoughts then turn to Paris-Roubaix next weekend and the Tour of the Basque Country - where the ‘home team' is lining up with a surprising import. In our second Arrivée episode of the Classics season, Daniel Friebe & Richard Abraham deliver their verdict on the 108th edition of the Tour of Flanders or Ronde van Vlaanderen. With Wout van Aert's spring campaign ruined by a crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday, the Belgian's long-time bête noire, Mathieu van der Poel, started the race as the hot favourite. Find out whether MvdP could become the first reigning world champion since Peter Sagan in 2016 to ride to Flanders glory in the rainbow jersey - or who among the cast of challengers, led by Mads Pedersen & Matteo Jorgenson, managed to thwart him. buycycle Arrivée is supported by buycycle. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by former Classics stalwart Mitch Docker and the journalist Richard Abraham, as we look back at last weekend's pre-Ronde van Vlaanderen appetisers, the E3 Saxo Classic and Gent-Wevelgem. Friday saw the latest masterclass from Mathieu van der Poel in E3, which underlined his status as the outstanding favourite for De Ronde. Forty-eight hours later, though, Mads Pedersen's victory over Van der Poel in Gent-Wevelgem led some to wonder whether Lidl-Trek had happened upon the perfect blueprint for defeating the Dutchman - not that the strategy will be easy to implement on Sunday. In the final part of the podcast, we hear from a rider for whom just being on the startline on Sunday will represent a personal triumph - the Dane Michael Valgren, whose career was almost ended by a horror crash in the 2022 Route Occitanie. This week's episode of The Cycling Podcast comes from the latest stop on Daniel Friebe's springtime Mediterranean tour, Mallorca, and precisely the home of Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch. That pair are joined by journalist Richard Abraham, as we revisit some of the most compelling storylines from Milan-Sanremo at the weekend. Jasper Philipsen's victory on Via Roma meant heartache for Tadej Pogačar and his UAE Team Emirates team - and prompted questions about their strategy. Will Pog now have to rethink his not-yet-winning formula in La Classicissima, particularly in light of his newly declared ambition to become the greatest rider in history? Speaking of history, in a special investigation, Daniel sets off in search of a piece of Sanremo's. And, speaking of the future, Mathieu van der Poel has just committed the next decade to one company, as Rob reports. NordVPN This episode is supported by NordVPN. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe and journalist Richard Abraham are back in the bike race bubble at Paris-Nice, where two of the Big Four contenders for this year's Tour de France start to piece together their preparations for July. Remco Evenepoel comes fresh from victory at the Volta ao Algarve but is taking on a stage race on French soil for the first time in his career. Meanwhile Primož Roglič looks to open his account for his new team, BORA-hansgrohe, at a race he won in 2022. We discuss the expectations of both riders and hear from experienced Australian Jack Haig on what makes Paris-Nice a race of singular difficulty. Of course we also tackle the weekend's big talking point, namely the exploits of another one of the Big Four, or should that be the Super Six: Tadej Pogačar at Strade Bianche. Daniel and Richard hear from Pog's former teammate Matteo Trentin and digest an 81km solo victory that will undoubtedly go down as one of one of his greatest hits. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by the journalist Richard Abraham & top commentator Rob Hatch, as we look forward to a very eagerly anticipated Opening Weekend in Belgium. Before thoughts turn to Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne,, we review some racing highlights from the last weekend, most notably from the Algarve in Portugal, where Remco Evenepoel passed the 50-victory mark in his still very young career. We then shift our attention to the Var in France, where our ‘own' Larry Warbasse performed with some distinction on a fine weekend for his Décathlon-AG2r La Mondiale team.. In the final part of the episode, we focus on two upcoming races where Visma-Lease a Bike will be expected to pick up where they left off in 2023, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and O Gran Camiño in Galicia, Spain - start ramp for Jonas Vingegaard's 2024 campaign. We hear from one rider who'll be hoping to thwart the “killer bees” in Belgium, Fred Wright of Bahrain Victorious, before telling you why tall trees may fall hard in the not-too-distant future in Galicia - even if that doesn't apply to Vingegaard this weekend. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by the journalist Richard Abraham & Décathlon-AG2r La Mondiale stalwart Larry Warbasse - a still slightly soggy Larry Warbasse after his season's début at a very wet Tour de la Provence. We discuss how Mads Pedersen whipped up a storm that blew the rest of the field away in the south of France - & ask whether the weather conditions themselves were even fit for racing. The Belgian whirlwind, Remco Evenepoel, also began his season at the weekend in Portugal, & did so with a trademark long range win. We hear from him, while turning our thoughts to the Tour de France; that race will also define everything Mark Cavendish does between now and July, and the Astana sprinter's coach, Vasilis Anastopoulos, gives us a full debrief on a successful start to the year in Colombia. Finally, we look ahead to one of the less ballyhooed races taking place in the coming days - The Tour of Rwanda - & hear from one rider for whom it will literally mean the end of the road. In this special episode of The Cycling Podcast, as a festive treat, we serve up a Christmas selection box of highlights from the 2023 men's Grand Tours. Proceeding in chronological order, we journey back in time first to May and the Giro d'Italia, where Daniel Friebe and Brian Nygaard saw lots of rain, a race that took its time to catch light, then a finale for the ages. Next, Lionel Birnie took over at the steering wheel for the Tour de France - variously assisted and accompanied by François Thomazeau, Mitch Docker, Lizzy Banks, Ian Boswell and Richard Abraham. Finally, it was on to Spain and the Vuelta - where Daniel and an assortment of familiar guests saw Jumbo-Visma continue their quest to make history by winning all three Grand Tours in a single season. He started at an early age with Tae Kwon Do, where he reached the rank of 5th Degree Black Belt. David also holds a black belt in Combat Hapkido, and a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu.Though Tae Kwon Do was his main focus growing up, he was never satisfied learning just one system. Once David left for college, he began training in Boxing. Seeing how much striking had to offer, he added Muay Thai to his resume through his training with Richard Abraham of Maximus Muay Thai. David did not stop here as he was soon exposed to the world of grappling through Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. David actively trains and competes in Jiu Jitsu under Mike Cimm, while still training striking as much as he can. In addition to these sport based disciplines, David has also worked with some of the most respected instructors in Krav Maga (Aaron Jannetti & Ryan Hoover). The idea behind all of this training is so that he can bridge the gap between sport and street in order to create effective self defense for any violent encounter.David loves teaching self defense to anyone, but his passion is working with women in order to make them tough targets. Throughout college, David taught countless women's self defense courses. After seeing just how many female college students had been a victim of sexual violence, he knew he needed to do more to help prevent this. Once graduated, he spent months traveling the country working with sororities and women's groups across numerous college campuses. David's goal is to be the top instructor in Illinois for women's self defense. When he is not teaching, he is training. This is our XL Tour de France preview with Lionel Birnie, Daniel Friebe and François Thomazeau – a bumper episode looking ahead to the race, which starts on Saturday. A few days before the grand départ, as the team line-ups and new jerseys are unveiled we look ahead to see what's in store at the biggest race in the world. It's shaping up to be a clash between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar – who have won the last three editions between them – but is there more to the race for the yellow jersey than that? We weigh up the sprinters and the relatively few opportunities for them to shine and ask the big question – can Mark Cavendish win his 35th stage and claim the outright record? Our Tour de France logo this year features the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the silhouette of the Puy de Dôme, which the Tour will visit for the first time in 35 years. We also hear from Mitch Docker, Ian Boswell and Richard Abraham, who will be joining the podcast team at various points through the Tour. The Cycling Podcast's daily coverage starts on Saturday evening, after stage one, but we are continuing our build-up by kicking off our Kilometre 0 series early. To mark the 10th anniversary of The Cycling Podcast we have created a mini series for Friends of the Podcast called The 100th Tour, 10 years On. It's the story of the 2013 Tour as told by the podcast and it will be released daily as we build up to the start of this year's race in Bilbao. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. November 16 | Episode 1 The Cycling Podcast’s new series **Explore** focuses on the booming world of endurance and ultra endurance riding and bikepacking. Join hosts Lionel Birnie and Hannah Troop, plus producer Tom Whalley, for a six-part series with new episodes released each Friday morning. Over the course of the series we’ll hear inspirational stories from people who have undertaken some remarkable challenges on two wheels. We’ll hear from someone who rode to Australia, someone who rode across Australia, from round-the-world riders and End-to-End record-breakers. We’ll hear from pro racers, leisure riders and even the self-styled Slow Cyclist. In this opening episode we focus on the **Transcontinental Race**, which has has established itself as Europe’s most well-known bikepacking race. Founded in 2013 by the late Mike Hall, the race has been won for the past two years by James Hayden. Hannah interviews James about the challenge of winning back-to-back editions of the TCR, about how he chooses his route and focuses on his goal of reaching the finish first. Before that, though, we hear the other side of the coin from Richard Abraham, who talks about the emotional effects of scratching from the race 2,000 kilometres in. His account puts into perspective the scale of James’s achievement. In part two we learn about the group of women who form the **Donnons des Elles au Vélo** in riding the Tour de France route one day ahead of the race as they seek to push for a women’s equivalent to Le Tour. We hear from Tetiana Kalachova, who has ridden successive Tours, from Mathieu Istil, who helps to put together the ride from a logistical point of view, and from Juliet Elliott, who is more used to racing short, intense events but joined to ride one stage of the event this year. **THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS** **Rapha** support The Cycling Podcast all year and that support has enabled us to get the wheels rolling on series one of Explore.
