Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are back to review the latest news and racing in the world of procycling, assisted this week by ace commentator Rob Hatch.  ‘Opening Weekend' may not have lived up to all the hype but both Omloop het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne did serve up some juicy talking points. Among the hottest topics in the Belgian media were Visma-Lease a Bike's toils - and they're also on the agenda in this week's ‘Coorevits Corner', our weekly check-in with Flandrian cycling oracle Hugo Coorevits. In part three of the episode, we look ahead to Strade Bianche and Paris-Nice at the weekend. One of the favourites for overall victory on the Promenade des Anglais a week on Sunday, Pavel Sivakov, also shares some childhood memories of “The Race to the Sun” and discusses newfound confidence since joining UAE Team Emirates last year.  Sponsored by Sports Tours International The Cycling Podcast is proudly sponsored by Sports Tours International. Welcome back to Spin Cycle! We kick things off by diving headfirst into the opening weekend of the classics: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.First up, Omloop. What a weird day of racing, especially from the women's peloton. How and why did FDJ and SD Worx let the break get 15 minutes? It was a game of chicken where everyone ended up as a chicken. In the men's race, the surprise came in the finale as small groups came back together, which they don't usually do, resulting in a bigger bunch sprint than we've seen in years. At least a lovely old lady got her Arnaud de Lie moment. At Kuurne, Kaden Groves got a yellow card and Jasper Philipsen was fastest. Is Caley's Jonathan Milan draft pick already looking foolish? At Tour du Rwanda, the final stage was cancelled due to bad conditions. Not a great sign ahead of the planned World Championships later this year. Finally, we like to end the show on a high note, so last up is the news that the 2027 Tour de France might start in the UK. Jonny is ecstatic.

We're back this week with the Race Communiqué; getting the inside track on what is happening in the pro peloton with myself and my good mates Luke Durbridge and Tom Southam. The last month has been a busy one for the pro peloton. We've had the first European races, some stage race action in the Middle East, plus of course the most important bit - the classics season finally got going over the weekend in Belgium, at Het Niewsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.  Naturally we had a load to catch up on and we managed to pack a heap into this pod. As well as the racing news, I ask what we can really learn from Opening Weekend - what it feels like to ride it, and whether it is worth skipping if you want to win big later on?  Durbo – who was fresh (or as fresh as you can be) off racing the Opening Weekend himself, has some great insight as to what happens when a race is impacted by severe weather and what the process looks like to change a race on the go. It's something that fans rarely get to hear about but something that impacts everyone involved – including those of us watching at home.  Talking of harsh weather, Tom has just returned from O Grand Camino in Galicia, where he saw up close the condition of defending Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard and draws a few conclusions from the action there – as well as nominating his favourite tactical ploy of the month. There was so much to chat about, and we covered much more in our conversation but most excitingly (for me) we have a new format for (the newly retitled) Communiquiz! As well as a new name Durbo also takes over this month as question master – meaning that I get to go head-to-head with Tom in the new format. I'll leave it to you to have a listen and see who comes out on top! We had a lot of fun with this, and we hope that you guys do too. Cheers! Mitch

In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by the veteran French journalist François Thomazeau and the Aussie former Classics maestro Mitch Docker to recap Opening Weekend - the Belgian double-header dominated, as per the predictions, by the Visma-Lease a Bike team.  Wout Van Aert was the favourite for Saturday's Omloop het Nieuwsblad and indeed looked to be zeroing in on victory until the peloton him down in the closing kilometres. It was left to Jan Tratnik to ‘save' Visma-Lease a Bike and take the win…with Van Aert having to wait until the following day's Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne to open his Classics account for 2024. We discuss these and other notable performances from the two races, and also hear from Bahrain Victorious's Fred Wright about what went…wrong for him at Omloop. Julian Alaphilippe, too, has had better weekends, and would have been hoping for a better response to his boss, Patrick Lefevere's, recent criticism in the Belgian media. Nevertheless, we ask: what exactly was Lefevere playing at?  Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcast The 11.01 Cappuccino Our regular email newsletter is now on Substack. Had enough of sandstorms, palm trees and camels at the roadside? Get ready then for beers and techno, bergs and burgers: it's time for Opening Weekend...We start with a preview of Saturday's two editions of Het Nieuwsblad and Sunday's Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. The men's edition of Het Nieuwsblad will see Visma-Lease A Bike start with a stacked team that features the race's last two winners, Dylan van Baarle and Wout van Aert, and very much tagged as favourites. We hear from Sep Vanmarcke, who won this race in 2012 against an equally powerful BMC team and is now director for Israel-PremierTech in the Classics. Vanmarcke explains the hurdles facing Visma-LAB and reveals his hopes for the young IPT line-up.The women's Classics campaign also starts at Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday. We speak to Human Powered Health's Audrey Cordon-Ragot, who tells us about the significance of this race and why she's hoping it'll be wet and wild this weekend. The French racer also reflects on the latest more optimistic news for the Women's Tour of Britain. With that event in mind, we also hear from Cycling Weekly's Tom Thewlis,  who provides an update on the latest developments for the Women's Tour of Britain, which has returned to the UCI calendar as a four-day event and, assuming British Cycling can fulfil the financial and logistical requirements, is likely to run as a "hub" race based on one or two cities. Finally we turn to a quite astonishing story. It's a tale that could have had an absolutely awful outcome, but which ended up with Cofidis pro Axel Zingle perhaps saving the life of one of his close friends, Yael Joalland, during the GP Marseillaise race in France last month. Support the show

Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.Proper Nutrition: Consume a balanced diet with adequate protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Eating enough calories is essential for recovery after long workouts. Remember to lower your calorie intake during rest days in your recovery week. Active Recovery: Engage in low-intensity activities such as yoga, walking, or swimming to promote blood flow and speed up recovery.Massage: Massaging tight or sore muscles can help to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation and promote relaxation.Compression: Wearing compression socks or leggings can help to increase blood flow and reduce muscle soreness.Hydration: Drinking enough water is essential for recovery. Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily.Ice baths: Taking ice baths after a long workout can help to reduce inflammation and promote recovery.Stretching: Incorporate stretching exercises into your routine to help maintain flexibility and prevent injury.Listen to your body: Pay attention to how your body feels and adjust your training accordingly. This week's guest is a young man who has made a big splash in his first couple of months racing in the World Tour.I knew the name Tom Pidcock because he's been racing on the coat tails of Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert in cyclo-cross for a couple of winters now, but I'd never actually met him or spoken to him before. But when I got a message to say Tom would love to come on the podcast I was really keen to find out more about a man whose reputation preceded him. We've all seen how well he's fitted in right at the top level in some of the Classics this season. Third place in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, fifth at Strade Bianche and right up there in Milan-Sanremo are results that pretty much anyone would be happy with but Tom is a 21-year-old neo pro.I must admit I probably had a preconceived idea of what Tom would be like. I thought his swagger off the bike would match his swagger on it. He's a confident guy, no doubt, but he was also really down to earth and a pleasure to chat to so I hope you all enjoy finding out a bit more about him. The Spring Classics are here, and not a moment too soon, to lift away the winter gloom and welcome in some unusually mild weather for February in Belgium. Our editor Andy McGrath spent the weekend glued to the TV for Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, as did host Ian Parkinson. Excellent racing all round, Tom Pidcock and Jake Stewart on the podium and Anna van der Breggen winning as per usual were the highlights. What else caught Andy's beady eye? There's a fair few famous 1980s musicians partial to a pedal – see Lloyd Cole on Zwift for example. Echo and the Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant rode a cool old 531 steel framed machine round Paris between recordings back in the day. What's he up to now though? Massive fan and gawpy groupie, executive editor Ian Cleverly, tries not act starstruck while talking six strings and six gears. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It was time to hit the cobbles for the first time this year with Opening Weekend up in Belgium. That's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne on Sunday. I was planning to travel from Girona to Belgium with my EF Education-Nippo teammate Tom Scully so I thought it would be a great idea to take all of you on a road trip with us asa we headed to the first classics of the season. As you'll hear, we had a bit of a false start because our COVID-19 tests were a couple of hours out of date for the Belgian regulations so we had to go back home, get another test and do our Omloop Het Nieuwsblad recon ride on Spanish roads instead. The journey gave me a chance to find out more about Tom and particularly his career path, which has taken him the long way round, from New Zealand to the US, to Britain then to the Drapac team which merged with Cannondale and eventually became EF. Listening to him talk was a real reminder of what it takes just to get to World Tour level for some guys and what Tom said about embracing the lifestyle of a pro rider off the bike, being organised, coping with the travel, dealing with your plans being changed at short notice and not letting it eat into your mental and physical energy really resonated with me – especially this weekend! So, hope you all enjoy the pod. I'm off to Strade Bianche this weekend for what will be a very different appointment with the white roads to the one we had last summer. The season finally started, according to Lionel Birnie, with Belgium’s “Opening Weekend” comprising Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday followed by Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne on Sunday.  The racing was thrilling, but there has been a lot of other news in the cycling world, from coronavirus and its possible effects on the upcoming races, not to mention the four teams still in quarantine in Abu Dhabi, to Gianni Moscon’s latest transgression and disqualification at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.   Lionel, Daniel Friebe and Richard Moore discuss all this and there are interviews with Moscon’s Team Ineos sports director, Gabriel Rasch, as well as Allan Peiper of UAE-Team Emirates and Rik Van Slycke, whose Deceuninck-Quickstep team managed a win and a second place at the two Belgian races.
