523. We talk to Diana M. Greenlee and Jenny Ellerbe about their book, Poverty: Revealing the Forgotten City. "The settlement of Poverty Point, occupied from about 1700 to 1100 BC and once the largest city in North America, stretches across 345 acres in northeastern Louisiana. The structural remains of this ancient site-its earthen mounds, semicircular ridges, and vacant plaza-intrigue visitors as a place of artistic inspiration as well as an archaeological puzzle. Poverty Point: Revealing the Forgotten City delves his enduring piece of Louisiana's cultural heritage through personal introspection and scientific exploration. With stunning black and white photography by Jenny Ellerbe and engrossing text by archaeologist Diana M. Greenlee, this imaginative and informative book explores in full Poverty Point's Late Archaic culture and its monumental achievements. This week in Louisiana history. May 18, 1896. New Orleans' 4,000-seat Saenger Theatre opened on February 4, 1927 after three years of construction at a cost of $2.5 million. It was the flagship of Julian and Abe Saenger's theatre empire and is one of a few still in existance. Being New Orleans, a parade of thousands formed on Canal Street on opening night where the most expensive tickets could be had for 65 cents. For the cost of admission was a silent movie, stage play, and music by the Saenger Grand Orchestra. With an interior designed by architect Emile Weil it was an "atmospheric theatre" — 150 lights in the ceiling are arranged in the shape of constellations in the night sky surrounding an Italian Baroque courtyard. Special effects machines projected images of moving clouds, sunrises, and sunsets. This week in Louisiana. Today on Louisiana Considered, Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Thomas tells us about his approach to playing Atticus Finch as the touring production of “To Kill a Mockingbird” heads to the Saenger Theatre. And we learn why Louisiana leads the nation in rates of inmates serving time for crimes they committed as kids. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is coming to the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans from May 30 through June 2. Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning work has received rave reviews since it debuted on Broadway in 2018. The Emmy Award-winning actor tells us more about taking on this iconic role and why he believes the story is increasingly important. According to a new report published by the nonprofit Human Rights for Kids, the United States punishes adults for crimes they committed while they were kids much more often and more severely than other countries; and of all U.S. states, Louisiana does this most often. My favorite “to do” app is appropriately named “Microsoft To Do.” There are TONS of ways to track to-dos or tasks (Jeff uses Things) but I don't think of Microsoft To Do as a “task management” app … for me it's a “stress avoider” because it's the easiest way for me to capture a to-do that pops up in my mind before it disappears, and I don't have the STRESS of trying to remember it!I usually add a “Due Date” to an item which simply means that I know that to-do will bubble up on that date, and then I can triage it to either do it or schedule it for another day. A couple of quick tips:1) You can add an emoji to your list name and that's a fun visual cue for your list.2) You can also add “tags” by using the hashtag before a word which turns into a tappable word for bringing up all the related tasks. So Say We All! Lady Bam Podcast traveled to the Saenger Theatre in Pensacola, Florida to take part in an epic Battlestar Galactica reunion as part of Pensacon 2019, and we're thrilled to be able to share the full panel with our listeners for the first time ever as a podcast! President Roslin and the Lady Bam herself, Mary McDonnell, led a special cast reunion panel with Michael Hogan (Saul Tigh), James Callis (Gaius Baltar), Michael Trucco (Sam Anders), Tricia Helfer (Six), Tahmoh Penikett (Helo) and Leah Cairns (Racetrack). Taking place on the eve of the 10 year anniversary of the end of the series, the panel reminded us just how special this show was, and what an extraordinary group of people it brought together to bring it to life. Discussing character arcs, reminiscing and debating the idea of a revival (spoiler alert: the cast is ready, and even has an idea!), this is a BSG panel unlike anything you might have heard before. They say that all this has happened before – but it only happened this first time in Pensacola!

This is a unique episode. This episode I'm the one answering all the questions. Noah Jackson interviews me about my recent pilgrimage to Africa. We had a compelling conversation about the extreme emotions that surfaced after returning to my ancestral home after a 400 year forced exile. At age 11, Darrian began studying music at the Academic and Performing Arts Center under Dr. Perry Combs and several other inspiring music educators, including Alvin Fielder, London Branch and Chad Anderson. These musicians played a huge role in his early development and would also serve as his mentors. In 2008, Darrian moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he took over the drum chair in Ellis Marsalis's quartet. He stated, "I love playing with Mr. Marsalis; he allowed me to grow and explore the music without consequence." Darrian continued to play with Ellis until his departure from New Orleans in December 2012. Darrian is a rising star, drummer, composer, and band leader of The Session, a group comprised of unique characters he shared the bandstand with while playing in Jason Marsalis' vibe quartet. Darrian has performed in over 30 festivals worldwide. He has also performed at renowned venues such as The Kennedy Center, Herbst Theatre, Saenger Theatre, Aladdin Theater, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Snug Harbor, Smoke Jazz Club, and Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse. He has shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Victor Goines, Irvin Mayfield, Godwin Louis, Jazzmeia Horn, Brianna Thomas, Joe Temperley, Germaine Bazzle, Jessie McBride, Bob Cranshaw, Bria Skonberg and Ellis Marsalis. Darrian has recorded with Ellis Marsalis (Live at New Orleans Jazz Fest 2011), Greggory Agid (Mystery Blues), The Session (This Is Who We Are), Sam Zeanah Band (self titled), Bria Skonberg (TBA), Christina Perez (self titled), and Regeneration Brass Band (Body and Soul). In addition to performing, Darrian taught percussion classes at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Performing and teaching are two of Darrian's greatest passions! Darrian now resides in New York City where he is currently pursuing his music career. Support this podcast
