Send us a Text Message.James Mountain Inhofe , was an interesting man. He was Oklahoma's longest serving Senator, a pilot, and a man who served in office on every level of Government. He was Mayor of Tulsa, a Congressman and a Senator. He was a conservative advocate and a man who fought the Climate change movement every step of the way. He even famously once brought a snowball into the Senate Chamber to make his point. In this episode we will remember that famous moment and look back the years he served as Chairman of the Armed Services Committee too. He was a tireless advocate for veterans and active duty personnel too. He was most famously though, a man who fought for the needs of Oklahoma. We will look back at his career and in our last half hour let you hear from him on his final day in the United States Senate, in his farewell address. Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., described Inhofe on Tuesday as a "dear friend and mentor, a titan in Oklahoma, and a highly effective leader in D.C." He was an extraordinary figure in the Senate and in this episode we look back at his career. He died on July 9, 2024 at the age of 89.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Tracy Tullier, a Breaux Bridge resident and Supervising Guide of Tours at the Louisiana State Capitol, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss her beloved work in guiding people through our state's majestic Capitol, as well as sharing Louisiana's rich history with visitors who hail from all parts of the U. S. and countries around the world. Tracy Tullier at the Louisiana State Capitol, photo credit to Jan Risher, the Advocate. While many Louisiana residents have never experienced the tour of our State Capitol, in 2023 visitors from 115 different countries made the trip, and over 65,000 registered signed in. Tracy explained that in addition to these registered guests, many people don't sign in for a tour but still show up to wander around the beautiful building and make the trip up to the top floor Observation Deck to take in the sights of the Mississippi River, LSU's campus, and surrounding buildings of downtown Baton Rouge and beyond. Tracy came to our attention over the past couple of years when Lafayette Junior Leadership Class students traveled to Baton Rouge to learn about state government, the legislative sessions held at the State Capitol, and have the opportunity to meet elected officials from Acadiana. She makes the day, her smile captures your heart, and you know you are in good hands. Tracy is professional, enthusiastic, and well-informed, ready to shape your understanding about Louisiana, weaving in facts and tidbits of historical events such as when Huey Long was shot inside the Capitol building, how the current State Capitol came to be built, and how the House of Representatives and Senate work. On her tours, Louisiana really comes to life! Pictures below were taken by Jan Risher of the Advocate and depict the chandeliers on the Capitol's first floor (which weigh two tons), and photos of the Senate and House Chambers. The Louisiana State Capitol was built in 14 months, and cost $5 million to construct. It was the brainchild of Governor and U. S. Senator Huey Long. It is the tallest capitol in the United States. And as Tracy Tullier states, "Our capitol has more questions than it does answers" when she recounts the many interesting events that have taken place in the building, including Huey Long's death, the bombing that took place in the Senate Chamber in 1970, and how thereafter, a pencil (or something) got stuck in the Senate Chamber's ceiling. Ironically, Senator Long died before he could dedicate the Capitol, so that honor was fulfilled by his successor, Louisiana Governor Oscar K. ("OK") Allen. Pictured below is a photo of the early Capitol Building. If you haven't made this trip to Baton Rouge to visit the Capitol, this tour should be added to your bucket list of things to do in your lifetime, as it is truly a lifetime adventure and one that will awaken your interest in Louisiana culture. Tracy Tullier and her fellow tour guides are employed by Louisiana's Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism, under the office of Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser. Tracy worked at the Slidell Welcome Center before being employed at the Capitol several years ago, and encourages people to check out all of our state's Welcome Centers to learn more about Louisiana. During the interview, she thanked her boss, Jason Miller, for his support, and complimented her peers throughout the state who are employed at our regional welcome centers who encourage people to check out local attractions, dining, lodging, and events as they pass through Louisiana. Before you travel to the Capitol, you may want to visit online at https://house.louisiana.gov/pubinfo/VirtualTour/lacaphistory.htm to gain more information about the experience. The State Capitol is free and open daily for tours, from 8 till 4:30 p.m. If you want to make a reservation for the tour, call 225-342-7317. The tour guides will confirm your appointment via email. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy released, in an exclusive to FoxNews pundit Tucker Carlson, thousands of hours of security camera footage from in and around the Capitol on January 6, 2021. It shows a much calmer scene than previously released clips, with protestors appearing to walk about taking pictures like tourists, undisturbed by police. The so-called QAnon Shaman, Jacob Chansley, appears to be escorted around the building and assisted into the Senate Chamber by officers, where he prayed, thanking God for their assistance. The Capitol Police chief has since said that Carlson's selective editing and claims about the video are "outrageous and false", and that outnumbered officers were attempting deescalation techniques to get protestors, including Chansley, to peacefully leave the building. Chansely, in a signed confession, has said police repeatedly asked him to leave. Do we now know what really happened during the "insurrection"? Will we ever? How can conservatives reasonably evaluate competing claims about the events, and the video, of January 6? Right Angle is a production of the Members at https://BillWhittle.com . January 6th was shocking and clearly got out of hand, but what was even more shocking is the government's response to that event. The committee that was convened as a result was a show trial, designed to reinforce a narrative whose purpose was to shame Donald Trump and to ensure that he would be permanently eliminated from holding office. At the center of this coverup, has been the government's unwillingness to release ALL the footage from that day's events. As part of his agreement to get the votes from a couple of key holdouts during the Speaker's election, Kevin McCarthy agreed to release ALL the footage from that day. It was being concealed for "national security" reasons. For what possible purpose could Nancy Pelosi and her Democrat colleagues be withholding this footage? Maybe some of it ran counter to the OFFICIAL NARRATIVE? Join me today as we look a little closer into these details and ask key questions about what happened that day. If the world goes expected, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will make history this summer when she is sworn in as the first Black Supreme Court justice in American history. The Senate confirmed her nomination this week on a largely party line basis after President Joe Biden fulfilled a campaign pledge to nominate a female Black jurist to the Court if a vacancy provided him the opportunity. The vote was 53-47, with three Republican senators joining all 48 Democrats and two independents. The vote was not without political theater, however, and familiar divisions were evident in the Senate Chamber and beyond - and indeed throughout the confirmation hearings. But the historic nature of the confirmation is the lede that Jessica and Joe discuss on today's episode.

On March 4 1909, William Howard Taft was to be sworn in as the 27th President of the United States. The night before a fierce storm struck the East Coast and all but shut down travel. With Temperatures well below freezing snow began on the afternoon of March 3 in Washington DC and continued into the after dawn hours of Inauguration Day, which at the time was still held on March 4th. The blizzard left more than 10” of snow. The inauguration ceremony was moved indoors, into the Senate Chamber, limiting the number of persons who could attend. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the inaugural parade was not cancelled. 6,000 city workers used 500 wagons to remove 58,000 tons of snow to clean the parade route. For the first time in inauguration history, the incoming First Lady joined her husband in leading the parade from the Capitol to the White House. Before heading off that evening with his wife, to an inaugural ball at the Pension Building, Taft hosted a celebratory dinner at the newly opened Metropolitan Club for those fellow members of his Yale Class of 1878 who had come to the event. In his remarks he said that . “I always said it would be a cold day when I got to be president,” and so it was. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Why Democrats might end up using the Senate's Nuclear Option to pass Voting Rights laws they've already passed in the House chamber?

Senators in the upper chamber of Congress are allowed to write and change the rules of their chamber depending on which party is in control of the Senate Chamber during the current session of Congress. The Senate's Nuclear option is a metaphor for changing the vote-threshold of legislation and nominees  from 60 votes to 51. When the Senate is not using the Nuclear Option, it takes 60 votes to end debate on a law or bill and then the Senators can vote on a bill and either pass the legislation or not pass it and possibly even continue working on that law until they can all agree to pass it. But as the Senate stands right now until the start of the new Congress session in January 2023 starts, there is fifty Republican Senators and fifty Democratic Senators in the upper chamber of Congress. When necessary Vice President Harris may as the President of the Senate cast a tie breaking vote when Senators vote fifty to fifty for a piece of legislation in consideration. That's where the Democrats in the Senate have to be careful with possibly changing the rules of the Senate to allow for the usage of the Nuclear Option. The top-rated weekly law and politics podcast -- LegalAF -- produced by MeidasTouch and anchored by MT founder and civil rights lawyer, Ben Meiselas and national trial lawyer and strategist, Michael Popok, is back for another hard-hitting, thought-provoking yet entertaining look at the most compelling developments at the intersection of law and politics in real-time. On this episode, Ben and Popok explore and explode this week's political litigation developments: 1. Bombshell revelations about why Trump chose Rudy “I will say anything” Giuliani to be his lawyer when no legitimate lawyer would take his cases. 2. The troubling indictment for lying of democratic lawyer Michael Sussman by Trump's special prosecutor looking into Russian interference for providing compelling evidence of Russian involvement, but allegedly not disclosing to the FBI that he also worked for the Clinton Campaign. 3. This week's decision by a North Carolina 3-judge trial panel to overturn the state's new Voter ID laws as racially-biased and violative of the State's Equal Protection Clause. 4. The FBI's bumbling investigation of Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh, the 4,5000 tips it received prior to his confirmation, and what it means for the future. 5. This week's decision by an upstate NY federal judge to block New York's front-line health worker vax mandate on First Amendment, religious grounds. 6. Key Developments in the USA v. the State of Texas case challenging the constitutionality of the abortion ban and now assigned to an Obama-appointee federal judge sitting in Austin, and a full hearing on the matter to be held by him in 2-weeks' time. 7. A “friends of the court” brief just filed by the architect of the Texas Bounty Hunter/Handmaid's Tale abortion ban, the state's former solicitor general, seeking not only the overturn of Roe v. Wade, but also that women should go back to the Dark Ages of abstaining from sex altogether, and calling for the elimination of gay marriage and gay sex as a constitutional right. 8. And, updates, updates on: (a) E. Jean Carroll's defamation suit against Trump in Manhattan federal court; and (b) a Jan6 insurrectionist trying to walk away from a sweet-heart 8 month plea deal for breaking into the Senate Chamber by claiming his plea agreement was “forged.” Special Easter Eggs Alert: Popok receives NO yellow cards from Ben on this episode but does demand that Ben wear a LegalAF t-shirt on the next show. Welcome to the final new episode of the week for Quick News Daily. I hate to sound like a broken record, but the most important topics for our everyday lives are pretty much the same these days. We have news on COVID about vaccines and double masking. We’ve got news on some new executive orders from President Joe Biden, plus some more updates on impeachment.Add Quick News Daily on VERO: http://bit.ly/QuickNewsVeroWhat VERO is: https://neilpatel.com/blog/what-is-vero/The search engine that plants trees: Ecosia.org Sources ----more----Transcript:COVID VACCINESStarting off the show, I want to bring a new study of the COVID vaccines to your attention. I’m not sure how this one compares to the South African study in terms of how accurate it could be, but it was led by William James, a professor of virology at the University of Oxford. I want to warn you right away that like most other studies about COVID, this one hasn’t yet been peer-reviewed.  His team took blood samples from people who had recovered from COVID, as well as people who had been vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine. They also broke it down by whether the vaccinated volunteers had received one or two doses. They then tested this blood against one of the first variants from a year ago, the South African variant, and the UK variant (which this article from the Guardian calls the “Kent Variant”. I guess they like to blame specific areas over there).  In terms of antibodies, the blood had moderate protection against the original variant, slightly less protection against the UK version, and then no ability to neutralize the South African variant. That said, when it comes to your immune cells that fight off an infection once you get it, people who either had COVID originally or those who got one dose all had strong immune cell responses. These experts are definitely encouraged about this because they think it means our immune cells are protecting against different regions of that all-important spike protein. If they protect against more areas of that, then we could be protected against other variants that might show up.  In terms of people who got second doses, Professor James said “In more than 90% of cases, the antibodies that people are generating after the second dose are up at the sort of level that neutralises the virus and which we would expect to protect them from infection. We’re pretty confident that they’ll be protected from infection by the South African strain and the Kent strain, as well as the [original] strain of the virus.”  Since the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are very similar, it seems that if you got either of those vaccines, you should still be in pretty good shape.  I have to just take a second and tell you how much it bothers me that this article (again, since it’s from the UK) kept calling the vaccines “jabs” instead of “shots”. I know it’s just because we’ve known it as “shots”, but “jabs” just creeps me out for some reason.  DOUBLE MASKINGFinally, we have some data about whether double masking actually helps prevent you from getting COVID. This data is actually coming from the CDC, which is even more encouraging. They found that by either wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask, or just a surgical mask with the ear loops knotted and sides tucked in to get a closer fit, you can reduce your exposure to airborne particles by over 90%!  In their experiments, they found that just by themselves, a surgical mask blocked 42% of particles if an infected person coughs, while a cloth mask blocked 44%. However, when they’re combined, they blocked 92% of particles.  When it comes to regular breathing and you’re around someone without a mask, your exposure is decreased by 65% when you do the knotting technique and 83% if you double mask. This goes up over 95% if both people are double masking or doing the knotting technique.  They also say to test that your mask is filtering correctly, you should practice wearing them in front of a mirror. If your mirror fogs up from your breath, it’s working. If you feel it on your eyes or your glasses steam up, it’s not working. It sounds counterintuitive, but you’d rather have it go out the front, which is how it gets filtered. If it’s coming out the top, it means the masks are actually blocking the air completely, and it has to go somewhere, so it’s just a straight-up hole on the top or out the sides, with no filtration. EUGENE GOODMAN/IMPEACHMENTFlipping over to impeachment, I have to give another shoutout and thank you to Capitol Police officer, and now Deputy Sergeant at Arms, Euguene Goodman. On Wednesday, after I had already recorded the show, the Democratic Impeachment Managers played another never-before-seen video. This time, it showed security footage of Mitt Romney heading down a corridor, straight for the mob, obviously not knowing he was going the wrong way. Then, right before he turns the corner, Officer Goodman comes sprinting in out of nowhere to point him in the opposite direction and lead him to safety. With how outspoken he’s been of Donald Trump, it’s not hard to imagine that the mob might have hurt Mitt Romney pretty badly.  When he was questioned by reporters during a break, Romney even admitted he didn’t know how close he had come to the mob and said, “I did not know that was Officer Goodman. I look forward to thanking him when I next see him”. They were then spotted chatting during a break later in the day, and Romney said he used that time to thank him.  Matt Romney, Mitt’s son (I guess they have a sense of humor), was really gracious towards Officer Goodman, tweeting “we appreciate your bravery and service, Officer Eugene Goodman!!”, with a super cool action photo of Goodman pointing Romney in the other direction.  Literally, this officer was like a one-man team of Avengers. He was everywhere that day! Between saving Romney and leading the mob away from the defenseless senators who were still in the Senate Chamber, Eugene Goodman almost single-handedly prevented the mass murder of a huge portion of our government.  One of the things that hit me the hardest is actually the cover art for this episode, which you can see best on Spotify, which is that Sergeant Goodman was just standing there in the back of the Senate Chamber while this new video played. He played it really cool, but I wonder if he was grinning under his mask thinking, “yeah, that was me. Pretty amazing, huh?” I know I would have.  In terms of the actual trial, the prosecution wrapped up their case yesterday, so Trump’s team took over today. To give you a sense of what it’s been like, I’ll start with this *Beastie Boys*. If the defense was arguing about that song, they’d say that because the Beastie Boys said you have to “fight for your right to party”, then that means that either your parents have to let you party, or you have to kill your parents.  Their main evidence for today was a super long video of clips of all of these Democrats saying “fight”, totally out of context, and then showing the protests/riots from this past summer. It’s just a stupid strawman, whataboutism argument that if the Democrats want to convict Trump for saying “fight like hell”, then they should all be convicted too for these statements. Just a super dumb argument because they don’t have any other defense. Honestly, do not waste a single second watching the actual presentations from Trump’s team. Just wait for me to talk about it, or listen to the news tonight when they play the highlights.  BIDEN EXECUTIVE ORDERSPresident Biden made some more executive order news recently, so I want to go over two of those stories.  The first one is something I haven’t even heard about, but he announced an executive order “directing a government-wide supply chain review for critical goods in the coming weeks, with the chip shortage a central concern behind the probe”, with the priority of “identifying choke points in supply chains”.  Apparently, these semiconductor chips are hard to come by these days, which is hurting the auto industry and the video gaming industry. Some possible solutions that executives from companies that make these chips, like Intel and Qualcomm, have suggested to create tax incentives and initiatives to bring more chip manufacturers back to the US. Nothing is final yet, but if COVID has taught us anything, it’s that we can’t necessarily rely on foreign manufacturing all the time.  The other executive order was one that he actually signed, which I’ve mentioned before. Biden officially rescinded Trump’s national emergency declaration about the US-Mexico border. Yes, that’s right folks, no more taxpayer dollars are going to be used to fund the wall! I mean, Mexico was supposed to pay for it, but who’s counting anyway?  ENDHey, some exciting news: Quick News Daily has joined the social media platform VERO! VERO is a newer app that I actually learned about from director Zack Snyder after he used it to do those livestream commentaries for Batman v. Superman and Man of Steel. It’s a newer social media app, and it’s supposed to be the anti-Facebook/anti-Instagram.  It shows you exactly how much time you spend on the app. There are no ads, no algorithms, and there aren’t any notifications that are designed to keep you scrolling. You can even sort between friends (who you actually know), acquaintances, and regular followers. Plus, your posts can be pictures, a link, music, movies or TV shows, books, apps, games, or places. It’s really cool!  I’d suggest downloading it soon because eventually there will probably be a subscription. I’m not even sponsored by it, I just thought it was more ethical than Facebook. Also, since it’s so new, I figured I had a good chance of establishing Quick News Daily as a major player on there. The usual media people like CNN, the New York Times, etc. aren’t even on there yet. So, go check that out; the link to my Quick News Daily account is in the episode description.  While I’m on my soapbox giving out free ads to people, I might as well tell you about a search engine I found called Ecosia. Companies pay to advertise on Ecosia, and when you search and scroll past their ads, Ecosia gets money. They then use those profits to plant trees all over the world (they partner with local groups that do most of the work).  They even let you track how many trees you’re responsible for. For example, on my laptop, I’m at 146 trees. Honestly, even if you know what you’re looking for is on Wikipedia or the URL is just really long, just search for it on Ecosia and help plant a tree.  You can find all of that information, and more, if you still have questions, at Ecosia.org. That link is also in the episode description.

A couple days ago I was watching some of the footage from inside the Capitol Building during the siege of January 6th. When the insurrectionists entered the Senate Chamber and stood like a desolating sacrilege at the dais, they began to thank Jesus for this moment. I was horrified. My stomach turned to see Jesus’ name invoked triumphantly as a part of the chaos and violence. And I can tell you with all my heart that I do not believe Jesus condones or inspires the ugliness we saw. It was, to my mind, anti-Christ. But I cannot tell you those men aren’t Christians. I don’t get to say that. And I don't get to shirk off either my connection to the Christians I don’t understand or my share of responsibility for a faith that still hurts people in Jesus’ name.

What was Trump trying to accomplish on Jan. 6 by organizing a massive march on the Capitol just as Congress was preparing to certify Joe Biden’s electoral victory? Trump was desperate to overturn the election outcome. He lost the popular vote by more than 7 million but only narrowly lost several battleground states, which allowed Biden to win the electoral college. Trump’s team had filed hundreds of lawsuits at the federal and state level to overturn the election outcome in those states. Every one of those lawsuits has failed even though many of them were heard by conservative and right-wing justices, including the Supreme Court. Trump’s main fear in losing the White House was that his immunity from criminal charges and other legal actions that he thought were likely to be brought against him and his family at the state level would be removed. Trump fears that once having left the White House he and his family would be subject to criminal prosecutions for financial crimes, fraud and the like similar to the offenses that Paul Manafort was convicted of and for which he is now in prison. The Trump Organization, like many corporate entities especially in the real estate industry, is being investigated for a litany of financial crimes over the course of its existence that Trump and his family is potentially liable for. Trump is (arguably) able to pardon himself for federal crimes before leaving office, but not for state crimes. The Jan. 6 march was alternatively billed as a “March to Save America” or a “March for Trump” and Trump was hoping to delay or stop the certification process. There can be no other explanation for why he called this particular protest, this particular action, this particular rally and march in the middle of the day and in the middle of a work week and just two hours prior to the certification vote in Congress. Contesting the election result — and asserting his win — also allowed him to retain control of the Republican Party in a way that a loss would not and provided him with a significant fundraising opportunity and slush fund. But it turned out to not just be a ploy. He spent the days up until Jan. 6 browbeating Pence, who presides over the certification process, to overturn the election results. Was this a coup attempt? This was an attempt to overturn the 2020 election outcome at the moment Congress was in session to certify the election results, as is mandated by federal law. The election took place on Nov. 3rd. Biden won the popular vote by more than 7 million. He won the electoral college vote by 306-232. The Electoral College vote was certified on December 14, 2020. Congress was in session on January 6, 2021 to formally certify that Biden won the election so that he could be inaugurated, in accordance with federal law, on January 20, 2021. The violent takeover of the Capitol Building was designed to stop the election certification. Congress was dispersed. The president of the Senate, Mike Pence, was rushed out of the Senate Chamber and into hiding just moments before he would have been captured by a violent mob that was chanting “Hang Mike Pence, Hang Mike Pence.” This prevented the certification of the election outcome. Only after the mob was cleared from the Capitol Building was Congress able to reconvene to do this. While the Congress was dispersed and in hiding Trump made calls to members of the Congress to pressure them to help stop the certification. More than half the Republicans in the House of Representatives voted no on the certification when Congress was eventually able to reconvene later that night.

Untapped New York. https://untappedcities.com/2020/06/05/behind-the-scenes-inside-the-new-york-state-capitol-in-albany/   TRANSCRIPT: Hello, and welcome to Crimes & Witch-Demeanors!  I'm your host, Joshua Spellman.  We're starting the year off right with something we should have covered earlier…a haunted library!  Or…at least a haunting that was caused by a library.    The New York State Capitol Building, in Albany is home to three known spirits: the artist William Morris Hunt, a night watchman named Samuel Abbott, and a fruit vendor.  There was a death of a construction worker at the site that may contribute to the hauntings, but it is not confirmed.  Both the fruit vendor and the construction worker have remained nameless in all the internet articles I've read…until now.  Join me in discovering their identities and learning more about the tragic fire that erased centuries of history and caused billions of dollars of damage…which of course lets us touch briefly on the importance of libraries, preservation, and the dangers that digital and physical records pose to the preservation of our history and culture.   BUT…before we get to our main ghost story we have to talk about the building itself because not only is it impressive, it is integral to the spirits that haunt it.   The New York State Capitol is an incredibly large and imposing structure that fills two whole city blocks.  Five architects had worked on its design and it was heralded as one of the most beautiful buildings in America…though others criticized it for being an oversized and costly spectacle.  Which…they weren't wrong about.  Construction took place between 1867 and 1899 at a cost of over 25 million dollars, or the modern equivalent of 768 million.  It was built by hand using white granite from Maine and in places the walls are four to five feet thick.   Its style is unique…and that is in part because of its five architects that did not work on the project simultaneously leading to what historians refer to it as the “Battle of the Styles”.  It also has led to some interesting mishaps, not all stemming from its numerous architects, but they are major oversights nonetheless.  Some highlights include the building initially being built on top of quick sand!  Not sure how that happened!  They had to dig out all the sand and replace it with clay and concrete.  Another major mistake was that the original cornerstone of the building, which contains a time capsule, has been lost because the builders forgot to mark it.   The first architect, Thomas Fuller, designed the first floor in a Classical and Romanesque style.  However, from 1875-1883, Henry Hobson Richardson and Leopold Eidlitz worked on the building and continued the design in a Renaissance style.  During this time, Frederick Law Olmstead, who was a frequent collaborator with Richardson, was hired for the landscape architecture.  The final architect on the project was Isaac G. Perry, assigned to the project by Grover Cleveland.  He became the first New York State architect and is known for many institutional buildings and asylums across the state.   While the exterior itself is impressive the interior is absolutely breathtaking.  In particular, the Western Grand Staircase is a testament to the intricacies of this bold design.  Initially begun by Richardson, it was completed by Perry who kept his design but added even more carved elements than originally planned.  The Grand Staircase lacks a dome, and in fact the New York State Capitol is one of only 10 US Capitol buildings without one, but in its place is a magnificent 3,000 square foot skylight.  Which is…bigger than any house I've lived in.  I cannot even fathom it.  The vaulted ceilings and sandstone walls are carved with intricate acanthus leaf designs around 77 famous faces of the day.  The sandstone carvers were also allowed to carve a memory into the sandstone, many choosing to carve the faces of their wives or children.  However, one of these artisans had a dark side as he chose to carve the face of a demon tucked between some leaves in a dark hallway.  It is so small and tiny that it is said if you can find the face on your own, you yourself are a devil.   The devil is surely in the details and the capitol building is full of them.  One of the lost details are the murals of artist William Morris Hunter.  Hunt was commissioned to paint two 45 foot long murals directly onto the sandstone walls of the Assembly Chamber.  They were titled “The Flight of Night” and “Discover” and Hunt considered them to be his magnum opus.  Sadly, the ceiling of the Assembly Chamber was deemed unstable and had to be lowered significantly, permanently obscuring the artwork.  Future murals that were planned were deserted due to a lack of funding.  The destruction of these works are largely attributed to the deepening of his depression and eventual suicide.  His ghost still haunts the capitol today, mourning the loss of his greatest works.   The lowered ceiling was intended to be made of solid oak.  However, the contractor cheated the state to line his own pockets and instead used oak paneling filled with paper mâché.  While this was a contentious issue at the time it ended up saving the Assembly Chamber in 1911 when true tragedy struck.         “Good evening, what are you still doing here?” and old man asked, a lantern in one hand and a silver-handled cane in the other “Working late?”   “Good evening, Mr. Abbott!  Oh, well you know…a librarian's work is never done!” the man replied, “Plus the Tammany caucus didn't wrap up until,” he glanced at his pocket watch “nearly one o'clock this morning.  So I'm just closing up the State Library now.  I believe they're still in the Assembly Library up to God knows what! I just worry, I hate that the Assembly uses their library as a social venue…always drinking and smoking…even with their wives around!”   Old man Abbott chuckled, “Well I'll make sure they don't get into too much trouble, that's my job after all!” he said, patting the small firearm on his side.   “I will sleep a little better knowing you're on the lookout” the librarian sighed, “I suppose I'm just a little on edge about it all. With the Triangle Shirtwaist fire last week, I can't stop thinking about what would happen if something like that were to occur here with all the cigarettes flying about”   “Well,” Abbott said, thoughtfully, “they say this building is fireproof and I'm sure we'd be able to put out a blaze before it got too serious.  Remember the fire a few years ago in the cellar from the electrical?  That wasn't a problem.  We just shut the doors at it burned itself out.”   “You're right, you're right” the librarian replied, “I'm just being overly anxious.  Well, goodnight Samuel” the librarian said, waving his hand as he exited the library.   “Goodnight!” Abbott shouted back as he resumed his patrol of the stacks.   Samuel smiled, looking toward the intricate ceilings, drinking in the newfound silence of the library.  What a job he had.  What a life he had.  The relative stillness of the State Capitol at night was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the capitol during the day, not dissimilar to the cacophony of the Civil War that oftentimes still rang through his ears   But at night.  The night was different.  A peaceful, cool stillness that only being surrounded by marble  and stone could impart.  There was nothing like wandering the corridors alone at night, absorbing the artistry all around him; every night finding some new detail tucked away into the sandstone by some coy artisan.    Despite being an old man of 78, Samuel was happy to be working.  He loved being in awe every day.  There was always something new, something exciting.  The State Library itself, with its hundreds of thousands of books, or even more exciting…the artifact collection.  Unique items and treasures from all over the world, and he was able to spend time alone with them.  And it was his job to protect them and the employees of the capitol.  There was never a night that he didn't find something to excite him, and this night was no different.   “FIRE! FIRE!” a panicked voice shouted from somewhere in the hall.  Samuel rushed out of the library as quickly as he could, and he found the man in the hall, looking around, frantic.   “What's going on?” Samuel asked, concerned.   “There's a fire.  A fire in the assembly library.  It was just a small fire on the desk it could have been put out with just a bucket of water but we couldn't find any…” the man breathed heavily “we thought we'd shut the door and let it burn out while we got something to extinguish it but…but…now it's engulfed the whole library.  We have to get everyone out!”   Samuel didn't say a word.  He just nodded in understanding and rushed back into the library.  He had to do something, “Is anyone in here?!” he shouted through the library, his voice echoing.  He just performed his rounds and didn't see anyone, but he had to make sure “There's a fire and we have to evacuate!”  He listened.  The only thing he could hear was the distant commotion in the Assembly room.   Glancing around at the thousands of books and records around him, Samuel was overcome by the importance of these volumes.  Family genealogies, state records, even materials from the founding fathers were in this library.  Without a second thought, Samuel made his way around the library, flinging open windows in hopes that it could save the material. “What are you doing?” someone gasped from the doorway of the library “We have to go!” they shouted before running off.   “I'll be out in a moment!” Samuel grumbled back, continuing his crusade to save the library.   First, smoke began to pour in from one of the other entrances.  Then flames leapt out, licking the nearest shelf of books, setting them ablaze.  Quickly, the fire spread down the stacks.  The smoke was so thick that Samuel could hardly see.   Wheezing, he hobbled on his cane out into the hall.  He could hear voices in the distance, but he seemed to be the only one around, everyone else had made it safely out the area of immediate danger.  Samuel made his way as quickly as possible to the Grand Staircase but what he saw was a scene out of the ninth circle of hell.   The fire was burning so hot that the staircase was…melting.  The staircase was turning into a molten slurry and Samuel could hear cracks forming in the massive skylight above.  He pivoted and made his way down a narrow corridor.  He knew this building like the back of his hand, this was the closest way out, just through this claustrophobic hallway.   The smoke seared his lungs.  He couldn't see.  He reached for the keys on his belt, he knew the door would be locked.  It was only a hundred feet or so.  CRACK!  The sound was deafening.  The skylight above the Grand Staircase, had shattered.  And though it was far behind him, it sounded as though it was just above him.  The walls of the corridor were crumbling, the ceiling was falling down.  Just 40 more feet.  A large chunk of stone fell next to Samuel, just missing him.  30 more feet.  He coughed.  His eyes were feeling heavy.  20 feet.  He grabbed the keys from his belt.  15 feet.  The glass of the door he was headed to shattered in front of him, which was fortunate in case he couldn't get the lock.  10 feet.  His feet felt heavy, he was losing consciousness.  But he was almost there.  5 feet.   Blackness.   Poor Samuel Abbott perished just 5 feet from safety.  His body being buried by debris, it would not be found for days.  Samuel Abbott was the sole human casualty of the 1911 Capitol Fire.  Despite his brave actions, much of the Library's collections and State records were lost.  500,000 books, over 300,000 colonial manuscripts, state census records, revolutionary war records, were destroyed alongside another 10,000 archaeological and ethnographic artifacts.  It's said that miraculously, the only items left unscathed by the inferno were the Native American artifacts.  Were they protected by ancestor spirits?   The blaze was eventually put out, completely destroying about a quarter of the capitol.  Unfortunately, none of the material, not the building were insured.  Which was especially detrimental since the fire caused anywhere from 8 million to 12 million dollars in damage.  The modern equivalent of 209 to 314 million today.   In a strange twist of fate, the paper mâché paneling in the assembly room that covered up William Morris Hunt's artwork may have helped save the day.  If the ceiling in the Assembly was made of solid oak as planned, it would have been destroyed in minutes.  However, the filling of the paneling absorbed the water from the firefighter's hoses and slowed the progress of the fire.  Saving the Assembly room from total wreckage, and preventing the spread of the fire to the rest of the Capitol.   The jangle of keys can be heard late at night.  Locked doorknobs turn and are tugged at.  It appears that Samuel's ghost is still wandering the halls.  Not in pain, but happily carrying out his nightly duties, ensuring that everyone in the building is safe.  Helping to avoid any future tragedy that may befall the Capitol.         For a story about a library fire the accuracy of the articles out there are astoundingly poor.  In more than one article William Morris Hunt is called William Morris Hunter.  Luckily he's a larger figure in the art world and this is easily remedied but it had been Samuel Abbott that was misnamed it would make research on him much more difficult.   I feel so bad for Samuel Abbott, especially because he was so close to escaping.  His body was lost in the ruins and wasn't discovered until March 31st.  Here is an excerpt from the Brooklyn Times Union titled “Body is Found in Albany Ruins”:   “About 7:30 o'clock this morning, as the men tackled the debris near the entrance, they discovered a charred leg protruding upwards.  Shortly after the body was uncovered and taken from the ruins.  The head and trunk were not burned, but the four limbs were charred.   Had Abbott been able to continue on his way he would have found safety within five feet.  The door, although locked, is partly glass and would have broken easily.  It is supposed the smoke drove him out of the library proper, and he was overcome on his way to safety.”   This is also the main excerpt I based the narration on, since (naturally) not much is available on what happened to him specifically that night.  Though accounts of other staff members are plentiful.   However, I weaved facts in the rest of the narration.  Parts of the sandstone did melt under the heat of the flames and the giant skylight completely shattered from the heat.  The amount of damage to the building and the records inside it is astounding.  While the cause of the fire is still debated, today it's usually attributed to a cigar or cigarette that was discarded improperly during the caucus.  However, all the newspapers I read said it was due to faulty wiring, which was the cause of the previous fire in the cellar.  There were reports of electrical issues in the Assembly room and the Assembly Library prior to the fire so it is a possibility.  Reports on this differ and it's impossible to know now what truly started the blaze. The damage was incredible, and the descriptions of how the building essentially acted as a chimney for flames to shoot through and carry to other parts of the building is horrifying.  You can see pictures of the damage on the podcast Instagram.  It's worth a look.   This fire still impacts research in the modern day as so many historical records, even those dating to colonial times were destroyed.  However, this leads me to address a major part of this story that has become legend: that none of the indigenous artifacts were damaged in the fire.   This obviously is an ominous and spooky fact that has spread over the last century… but it's only partially true.  The night of the fire many brave librarians, archivists, and archaeologists did what any of us would do – attempt to save our cultural heritage.    Arthur Parker, the first New York State archaeologist ran the length of the fourth floor hallway brandishing a tomahawk that was passed down through generations of Seneca natives.  He used the tomahawk as a fire ax and rescued as many artifacts as he was able.  He managed to only save 50 of the 500 Iroquois artifacts on display, but it was better than having them all perish in the flames.  So…yes.  Some of the indigenous materials were saved, but it was due to human intervention, not the spectral.   Other librarians managed to save rare volumes and artifacts including the original manuscript of George Washington's farewell address and the copy of the Emancipation Proclamation that Abraham Lincoln had written by hand.   One of the more heartwarming things I read in the newspapers were the other librarians from across the world lending assistance and condolences.  In an article in the Syracuse Post Standard, Mary J. Sibley, the librarian at Syracuse University, offered the use of the library to the Capitol Building's State Library School.  The head librarian from the Imperial University in Tokyo also send kind words and support via telegram.   We'll get back to paranormal ghosts in a moment but the true ghosts of the fire is the hundreds of thousands of lost records that were vital to learning our country's history.  However, this fire and the famous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that happened only days prior, led to major fire safety reforms.  Library fires have destroyed many important records: most famously the 1921 fire that destroyed almost the entirety of the 1890 census, or more recently the 2018 museum fire in Brazil that destroyed over 200 years of records and artifacts.   One of the most annoying things I hear surrounding these fires is “Why didn't they have all of it scanned and digital?”  And there is so much to unpack here, it would probably take another hour of explaining the intricacies of not only digitization but digital preservation.  But here's the cliff notes: most of the world's knowledge is on paper.  Well over 90% of it, in fact.  Why is it not digital?  There's a number of factors—the largest being that digitization is expensive.  It takes a lot of manual labor that libraries, museums, and archives do not have the funding or manpower for in addition to storage and maintenance costs.  Digital records are also a lot more volatile than paper ones.  How many times have you opened a file and it was corrupt?  Or you accidentally deleted something from your hard drive?  Things like this can wipe out thousands of records in an instant.  Also, digital records need constant upkeep as file formats become obsolete and as they suffer from bitrot…yes, digital files do rot…there's a lot.  The long and short of it is that paper records are typically easier to preserve.  Ideally you would have the paper copies and numerous copies of digital surrogates stored in different geographic locations with different natural disaster threats.  But I digress.   The moral of the story is digital media is more prone to destruction and requires constant upkeep while paper records can be managed with benign neglect.   Okay, sorry for the lecture.  Let's talk about the ghosts we haven't met yet—the unnamed fruit vendor and the construction worker.   The spirit of the vendor was said to be discovered when a female tour guide was locking up for the night when she saw a large, black mass fall from one of the upper floors to ground below.  To her surprise, there was nothing there.  After telling her fellow tour guides they were confused because there had never been ghost sightings in that portion of the building.  It was later discovered that in 1890 a depressed fruit vendor flung himself from the fourth floor Senate Chamber staircase and died.  There are numerous reports of people seeing something fall from the staircase and when they look they have seen a man bleeding out on the stones.  However, once they go to get help there is nothing there upon their return.   Surprisingly, no articles name this fruit vendor which had me doubting his existence.  I came across the story on a fluke and I would never have found this information if it wasn't for some faulty OCR..which if you don't know is optical character recognition.  Essentially computer readings of scanned images.  I was searching for fruit vendors in 1890 using modern spelling “v-e-n-d-o-r” but luckily the OCR on a newspaper was incorrect and I still go the hit.  It turns out in 1890 it was spelled “v-e-n-d-e-r” and for some really odd reason, the story of the fruit vendor's suicide was exclusive to this Brooklyn newspaper.  Brooklyn is nowhere near Albany but again, I digress.    The story is honestly super graphic and surprising for a Victorian-era article, but the article from the Brooklyn Citizen reads as follows:   An Unusual Suicide: A Fruit Vender Kills Himself in the State Capitol (special to the citizen)   Albany, April 17th: At about 8:45 this morning Jacob Thorne, a sidewalk fruit vender, jumped or fell down the Senate staircase, a distance of eighty-five feet, to the second floor and was instantly killed, his head being crushed to jelly.  He was about 65 years of age, and had been in ill health for some time, and was supposed by many to be slightly deranged.  The suicide theory is accepted, as the body lay almost in the centre of the court”   So, now we know that his name was Jacob Thorne.  Why he's never mentioned by name anywhere is beyond me.  I tried to do more research into him, and I thought I came across him…a farmer named Jacob Thorne in the Albany area.  At first it appeared that he was still alive after 1890 but when I saw he was listed on a census for no reason, his wife was listed as widowed, I thought it may be him.  But alas, it was not.  I searched for a good amount of time through numerous resources and only came across the Jacob Thorne that was not him.  This leads me to believe either the records were destroyed or perhaps he was black.  But I'm just glad that his name is out there now, because the dead should be remembered.    This includes the construction worker who's spirit may or may not haunt the grounds.  In all the stories it is said that a man who was plastering the ceilings in the Senate Assembly room in 1878 fell on a Saturday night and he wasn't discovered until Monday morning, still alive.  Doctor's attempted to save his life but he died two days later.  Is this story the truth?   According to the Buffalo Courier and the Poughkeepsie Eagle, on Monday, October 29, 1878, two men had fallen while working on the capital building on the same day, at different times, and were both seriously injured.  So there's one discrepancy, there were two men: Patrick Stanton and John Hunt.  Stanton fell from the scaffolding while Hunt fell through a ventilation hole in the ceiling when removing its co ver.  Yet another inaccuracy is that this incident occurred on a Monday and not over the weekend as the story goes.  They were both immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention.    Neither of them appears to have died.  Though there was a John Hunter that died the same day who was a mason.  However, he's buried in Brooklyn.  It's possible it was him, but the name isn't an exact match.  The articles title…which I must read since it is…something else does say that there was a death from injuries.  The title is “Important River News: Items from our Exchanges ; Two Accidents At The Capital - Died From His Injuries - The Body of Eagan Found In The River - Fires - A Pet Dog Roasted In An Oven - Strange Disappearance Of An Aged Lady - Sad Accident in Troy”   This…is a sidebar we need to touch on.  I come across so many bizarre stories when reading newspapers.  The dog story…I just need to share.  I shouldn't laugh but it's so weird!   “A lady living on Front Street, west of Swan, had a favorite little pet dog about the house up to Thursday last.  On that day he mysteriously disappeared, and Sunday, when the lady had occasion to open for the first time since Thursday, the oven door of the kitchen stove, the roast remains of the per were found”  WHAT.  I need to know more.  But that's not why were' here.   Curiously, the article also mentions that there was a fatality of someone by the name Riley in the Assembly room due to ventilation holes which had been covered at this point.  Is this the ghost of the worker who fell?  Or is this an additional death not mentioned previously.  Either way, this is a mystery that I unfortunately spent over an hour trying to figure out and one that for now, will remain unsolved.  If either of these men were to die it seems it would have been John Hunt as he was suffering from “intense internal pain” that they couldn't find the cause of.   The ghost of William Morris Hunt is said to be felt in the Assembly Chamber where his prized works were covered up and then later destroyed.  No one has ever seen his ghost, but instead he has been “felt” and the lights will occasionally flicker.  Which could be his ghost…but it makes me think of the faulty wiring that may have ignited the blaze.  The doorknobs in the room also rattle and doors slam shut and open on their own.   However, I like to think this is the ghost of Samuel Abbott, making sure doors are locked and shut as he makes his nightly rounds.  The idea that Mr. Abbott is still trying to keep people safe, that this building has a guardian spirit makes me smile.  And on this smile-worthy note we shall close.    There is so much history that was lost and so much history to uncover at the New York State Capitol, an hour could be dedicated to all the information I couldn't fit in.  I'm recording this episode on Tuesday night because I spent way too much time investigating some of these ghosts!   If you have any places you want me to investigate, please let me know!  Tell a friend about this podcast if you think they'd like it.  So please, stay away from scaffolding, say thank-you to your local librarian, and as always stay curious and stay spooky.  Bye~

A new nominee for the worst movie ever and a new irritating Chinese ice cream flavor debuts in Hong Kong.  These stories & more coming up on today’s Overnight Underground News. I’m John Ford.   Retail sales plunge Yesterday we saw the latest jobs report and it wasn’t pretty. The retail sales numbers released today don’t look much better.  CNBC reports retail sales dropped nearly sixteen and a half percent in April, which is far worse than was predicted. Clothing sales were hit with the biggest downturns. Hey, it’s not like you need new clothes, you're not going anywhere and no one sees you anyhow. Retail sales declines were also seen in restaurants and service stations along with retailers that have been deemed non-essential. Grocery stores were one of the few retail establishments that saw an uptick in sales. Hey, people gotta eat and of course let’s not forget about all that toilet paper you bought either.  Homelessness could spike Ready for some more good news?  CNN Business now reports that the picture for low income workers is especially bleak. Nearly forty percent of those with a household income below forty thousand dollars a year reported a job loss in March. Another study conducted by a Columbia University professor, notes that homelessness in the US could reach as high as forty five percent within a year. The professor who conducted the analysis, Dan O’Flaherty, says the downturn is exacerbating homelessness which is already a public health crisis in many American cities. O’Flaherty notes, quote: “This is unprecedented. No one living has seen an increase of ten percent of unemployment in a month.”  Except maybe for those who got fired, and are currently seeing one hundred percent unemployment.  Michigan shuts down legislature Fed up with the protesters, Michigan lawmakers have decided to suspend their legislative session rather than face the possibility of continued armed protests. Bloomberg reports that  protests have been squarely aimed at Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who allegedly has received death threats since the protest began. Protesters are angered over the Governors controversial lock-down in the state. Lansing lawmakers had been fearing a repeat of the April 30th dissent, when armed protesters entered the Senate Chamber. The protests on Thursday saw much smaller crowds due to rain in the Capitol. Giving birth to the phrase, “Give me liberty or give me death. Unless it’s raining.”  Bars open up in Wisconsin Across the lake in Wisconsin, things were opening up after that state's supreme court tossed their Governors stay at home orders. Quite a few Wisconsiners dashed from their homes and headed to the bars for a quick Schlitz. One patron at a bar in Milwaukee told Reuters news: Wait, does this mean he likes to schwing?  Denver gets a KKK shopper Another day another guy shopping in a KKK hood. Fox thirty one Denver reports that this time the pointy headed masked shopper was spotted and of course photographed at the City Market in the Denver suburb of Dillon. The police have stated that they are asking for the public’s help identifying a man. The director of communications for the Town of Dillon, told the press, quote: “Right now, they’re trying to identify him, contact him and take it from there. Obviously, we take this kind of action very seriously.”  Biden mumbles again It’s time once again for our sound byte of the day. Today’s winner comes from presumptive democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, during his latest virtual roundtable. Just for the record, and leaving all the mumbling and other gaffes aside, there have been thirty six and a half million unemployed in the last two months. I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, our choice as leader of the free world is to pick either this doddering old fool or a reality show barker with delusions of adequacy? If that doesn’t convince you that the game is rigged, nothing ever will.  Tear gas ice cream Oh those wacky Chinese. The AP is reporting an ice cream shop in Hong Kong has a new flavor that’s turned out to be a hit with patrons, it’s tear gas flavor. The main ingredient in the new confection is black peppercorns, to give Hong Konger's that ol’ time memory of the peppery tear gas rounds fired by police during demonstrations last year. One customer explained the flavor as, quote: “It tastes like tear gas. It feels difficult to breathe at first, and it’s really pungent and irritating.” I don’t know about you, but that’s not what I look for in an ice cream flavor. What’s next, Covid-19 flavor? It tastes like a musky face mask, makes it hard to catch your breath and it’s only available for takeout.  Worst movie evar Cats is now officially the worst movie ever made. That’s according to the man who wrote what previously was considered the worst movie ever made, Battlefield Earth  Writer J.D. Shapiro tells The New York Post, quote: “I watched about 10 or 15 minutes of ‘Cats,’ and unfortunately, it might beat out ‘Battlefield Earth. To regular people, ‘Cats’ was f - - king disturbing.” Great, now we just gotta’ wait for Hollywood to make Battlefield Cats. You know, I wouldn’t put it past those idiots.

We sit down with Brian Feldman, a State Senator who represents District 15 in Maryland. Brian is also a CPA, so he brings a lot of those key business and finance insights directly into Maryland’s Senate Chamber. He’s a great partner of the profession and we’ve worked with him many times on a number of key bills. Even if you don’t live in Maryland, we think it’s important that you take a few minutes and listen in on this conversation, and here’s why: We all know what’s happening in Washington these day, and what’s happening in Washington is... nothing good. The political climate there is so toxic that nothing – or next to nothing – of huge significance is getting done there. Most legislative things that impact us directly are happening in our state capitals and in our city or county governments because most of the laws that directly impact our lives are passed at the state and local level. That makes the work that lawmakers do on those levels hugely important – but unfortunately, they’re also criminally overlooked and ignored. That all means our profession’s involvement at those levels is absolutely critical – and it’s wanted! Lawmakers want to speak with their constituents and get their input. Otherwise, they’re just flying blind. So we do that, and we hope that after listening to this episode, you will consider speaking with your state and local representatives, too. Even as Preston Brooks entered the Senate Chamber on May 22nd, 1856 few would predict the chain of events that he would set in motion, least of all him. A Southern Democrat representing South Carolina, he had heard of and read the speech made by Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner. It had publicly Andrew Butler, who was not only his state’s Senator, but also his cousin. Now he demanded retribution. Whereas he might have demanded a duel, it was, after all his first instinct, he was talked out of it by his fellow Congressman Laurence Keitt. This was, after all, a man below his station. He had proven, in his speech and the language he used, that point. Dueling him would be beneath Brooks. No, if he were to get satisfaction it would be by treating him like the slaves the Northern Abolitionist loved so dearly, and caning him. The events that would follow would become an iconic moment in American history and a turning point as Senator Sumner crumbled unconscious in a pool of his own blood on the floor of the Senate. Though he would recover from his injuries the nation would never be the same. In a sense Brooks would, through his actions, create a unity in the Republican Party that would create a national movement that would, in a few years’ time, deliver the White House to Abraham Lincoln as he set into motion events that would quickly sweep out of control. In a sense he would become the unwilling father of the party he so despised and a movement completely contrary to his nature and his ideology. This is the story of the caning of Charles Sumner….

Andrew Jackson was the 7th President of the United States.  He had the fourth highest rank of all the presidents, below Washington, Eisenhower, and Grant.  He is also considered to be the nation's ninth greatest president, after Lincoln, FDR, Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, and Truman.  Therefore, he is the second greatest warrior-president in US History, after only George Washington, himself. Andrew Jackson's military career began in the War of 1812.  First, he defeated Chief Red Eagle of the Creek Indians at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.  Then, he defeated Sir Pakenham of the British at the Battle of New Orleans.  Even though the war was over at this point, Jackson delivered Britain one of its greatest defeats in history, while only suffering 21 casualties.  In the Seminole War that followed soon after, Andrew Jackson captured Spanish Florida and became its territorial governor, thereby founding the state of Florida, which is currently America's fourth most powerful state. Andrew Jackson's personal life was a tough one.  "Old Hickory" got into 103 duels.  He famously defeated Charles Dickinson, thought by many to be the nation's greatest dueler, despite being shot two inches from the heart.  In the Senate Chamber, Jackson also sat next to Thomas Hart Benton, the man who had shot him repeatedly while he lay on the floor in a hotel in Nashville in a fight a few years earlier.  While president, he beat his would-be assassin with his own cane until his aides apprehended him.  Lastly, at his funeral, his pet parrot had to be removed because it was swearing too much (a skill taught to it by Andrew Jackson, himself). This episode only covers Andrew Jackson's life up to his presidency.
