He joins us along with his mother Gwenn Marelo, board president of the Spina Bida Foundation of Louisiana, to talk about  his racing journey and opportunities for adaptive sports in the state. The New Orleans' Jazz and Heritage Festival is upon us, and this Saturday, hip hop legend and NOLA native Lil Wayne will take the main stage with The Roots for the first time at the festival. The University of Connecticut took home the NCAA Division 1 men's basketball tournament this week. South Carolina won the women's championship. This year, twelve teams from the Gulf South made it to the so-called Big Dance, including the Grambling State men's team and LSU's women's team.   Smaller schools in the region were eliminated right away, but getting a shot at the championship can still make a huge difference beyond the basketball court. Joseph King, reporter with the Gulf States Newsroom, explains why.   Festival season is upon New Orleans. That means music, food and lots of tourists. Last year, the city saw over 17.5 million visitors and the city projects tourism numbers this year to continue their steady recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.    What made New Orleans' economy so tourist-heavy in the first place?    Laine Kaplan-Levenson, host of the  podcast TriPod, took a look at that question back in 2016. We listen back to the episode today.    With today's global supply chain, subsistence agriculture might seem like a thing of the past. As the saltwater wedge slowly makes its way up the Mississippi River, residents across the state are preparing to deal with the possibility of salinity in their drinking water. Officials have asked Louisianans not to hoard water, but many are already doing what researchers call “panic buying.” Nina Cleveland, an adjunct professor of emergency & security studies at Tulane University's School of Professional Advancement, studies the factors behind panic buying. She joins us now for more on the science –  and to offer some healthy alternatives. It's football season, which means New Orleans' bars are already packed on Sunday afternoons with the black and gold of the “Who Dat” nation. While more than half of NFL players are Black – a statistic that has remained steady for years – 2023 was the first year that two Black starting quarterbacks faced off in the Super Bowl. Why did it take more than 100 years of NFL history to get there?  That's the subject of John Eisenberg's new book, “Rocket Men: The Black Quarterbacks Who Revolutionized Pro Football.” The Gulf States Newsroom's Joseph King talked with Eisenburg about the grueling journey for Black players and coaches in the league. News broke last week of an unmonitored interrogation facility at a Baton Rouge Police warehouse, dubbed “the Brave Cave.” One officer resigned shortly after the news broke and others have been reassigned.  Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced Thursday that the Baton Rouge Police Department's street crimes unit had been disbanded. She joins us today to discuss how the “Brave Cave” happened, what's being done to address it, and how the scandal might impact Baton Rouge's search for its next police chief.  Elected sheriffs are often the most powerful figures in local law enforcement in most Louisiana parishes. And in a state whose population is more than 30% Black, they're nearly all white men.  Only four of Louisiana's 64 sheriffs are Black, and only one is a woman.  But voters will soon have the opportunity to change that. In 16 parishes, 24 candidates for sheriff are women or people of color. Verite's Bobbi-Jeanne Misick has been reporting on these candidates and she joins us today to tell us more about them.  High school football season began two weeks ago, but the scorching temperatures caused some schools to delay kickoff times. The Gulf States Newsroom's Joseph King went to a game and talked to parents and players braving the heat under the Friday night lights. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. When it comes to a top ten list of trending phrases in the category of technology, “backup” never cracks the top ten. After all, you merely make a copy of the existing data --- right?   Well, the millions of dollars have been lost to ransomware attacks have caused a sea change in approach to backups. In fact, after listening to this interview, you will see backup as an inflection point for recovery The consensus of the subject matter experts in this discussion is to establish a strategy to prevent an attack and well as have policies in place after an attack. One issue is the deployment of resources. Some governmental organizations are “siloed” to an extent that works to the benefit of attackers.  One scenario is the security teams think the backup is managed by the backup team; the backup thinks security is someone else's job. This causes delays in response time. The best practice here is to have tabletop exercises where stakeholders know exactly what to do in case of an attack. Traditional ideas of backing up once a day are finished.  One must consider backing up every four hours. On top of that, one must know where an accurate backup point exists. During the discussion, Joseph King from CAS Severn indicated that phishing attacks resulted in a $20 billion loss in 2021 and government teams must not underestimate their opponent. Comments from all participants indicate that cybersecurity is a cat-and-mouse game. Government agencies have backups, the attackers put malicious code in the backup.  If one uses immutable technology for the backups, then the attackers move to the next level. Joshua Stenhouse from Rubrik talks about current attacks where the policy for retention is changed. That way, they fool the organization into not retaining data at all. If you are considering a backup option, then immutability and policy structure must be included in the requirements. The interview gives great advice for systems managers:  do not assume backups will be there, you should evaluate your backups in a virtual environment, and don't expect you can recover up to the last serviceable date.

I thank you for joining me again, Beyond the Big Screen.[00:00:00] Hi, Gil. Thanks again for coming on with me, me coming on your show. I'm really excited about today. Hi Steven. Yeah, this is a collab about maybe my favorite story of all time. The story of Joseph who shh. Such a good. It's really growing on me too. I it's, it's raising up through the ranks of my favorite story.I'm in, there's so many good stories, but I think this one is definitely top 10, maybe top five, this field that we're going to talk about. An excellent job. And I'm really happy with what the, so this movie, Joseph King of dreams, it's really amazing how closely it's stuck to the biblical story from Genesis, uh, 37 to about 50 51.So Joseph [00:01:00] doesn't get his own book, but he gets a solid chunk of Genesis to himself. So apparently the makers, the creators of the movie in their first showing of the movie to all the producers, there was like deafening silence. And the bottom line was, this is horrible. This is not a story. It doesn't mean.Nothing fits. It makes no sense. And then they had to go to the drawing board to go back to the drawing board. Actually, now that I think about it, the D even do like a drawing board, like a, you know, the, what you might call it, a storyboard or the storyboard. Sorry. Went back and looked like what's the actual story, because there are several layers of editing and additions and stuff that doesn't really fit.And they just found the core of the story, the vision of the story, hang on to it and just ignored everything that didn't fit. And as I was watching the movie. Yes, you got it. You found it just like all the, all the things in those chapters [00:02:00] that just interfere with the natural organic progression of the story are not in the movie. So just like, you know, I have a Bible podcast have a podcast about films. This could be like a great opportunity for me to just say they didn't understand this movie at all. Let me tell you what it's all about now. The story, not the movie that just stood the story, the gut story story about a family feud about forgiveness, about opening, and you leave, it's an it story with a happy ending, with a happy ending.Yeah. And that's amazing. And not so many of these biblical stories, there is no happy ending or there is an, uh, an ending that wraps it up into a night and sneaky. And we'll talk so much too, about some of the ideas that you've developed in your podcast, a biblical proportions about how this book was written. So we're going to be going to movies and literature and literature review. There's going to be a lot [00:03:00] going on and I can't really wait to talk about this. Just a quick refresher for those of us who have forgotten the main plot of Joseph, the film is called Joseph Kingston. Because Joseph's superpower is at the beginning, dreaming the future and then interpreting other people's dreams to see the future. He is the favorite son of the third, a Hebrew patriarch. Jacob Yacov also named the Israel that fatherly love makes Joseph's brothers jealous. Throw him into a pit. They sell him into slavery. In Egypt, it starts out as a service in Egypt, climbs through the ranks, becomes the number two person in the entire land.Second, only to the Pharaoh. And then when his brothers come, he recognizes, they don't recognize him. And there's a lot of. And then by the end, he tells them who is he forgives them, asks for their forgiveness. They bring their father and they're very [00:04:00] prosperous and successfully Egypt. And they're happy family again, the end, it's a happy. With a little bit of extra singing because it's Dreamworks. So you got to have some show tunes in there, but for the most part, that is the story of the movie, Joseph Manoj dreams, and then Joseph from Genesis, the aunt and the last couple of sections of Genesis. We talk about how the show, the dream like van Gogh painting.Wonderful. Yeah. That's I mean, I think if you read it, you might. I have a different imagery for the dreams, but I think that that's really how they portray them in the movie is probably how somebody would have dreams like that. It's not going to be a literal or. Uh, film type. It's going to be that the stocks of wheat, and then they fall there's one in the middle and they're all swirling around. That's how you're going to have the dream of that sort of thing. Right. They really, I think are there all of their [00:05:00] dream sequences really do justice to the biblical story. You know, it's not easy to do justice to an iconic biblical story. So really kudos for that for the visuals because the visuals, no, I can't say that.I imagined it as a Vanguard, but it doesn't matter. The descriptions in the, in the biblical story are very colorful, very grand and wonderful. That's really apt the way that, uh, that they did it. Kudos. Clearly Jacob prefers Joseph over the other 11 ish of brothers, 10, 11 brothers. And he does him a disservice.Yeah. Which exactly does them, this survey. Jacob gives Joseph a beautiful coat. They call it the coat of many colors, the tunic of many colors. We'll get into a little bit of the symbolism of that, but, and really, I guess then the high level, this coat really makes the other brothers jealous and just a whole bunch of [00:06:00] these dreams.Jacob has. Are these genes that Joseph has really says that Joseph is going to be above all the other brothers. He's like me, me, me, me, me, the brothers really hate it. And they can cock this scheme to get rid of Joseph where they, uh, trick Joseph into getting separated from everybody. They sell Joseph into slavery, the throw into a pit for Roman to a pit. They sell them into say slavery, the hen to make it look to Egypt, to make it look like Joseph has just been killed out in the field by wild wolves. They take the coat of many colors, put some blood onto it, give it to Jacob, Jacob. So upset. Then the narrative takes over as Joseph. Through being sold as a slave and to Egypt, I think he gets sold to the may a lights for 20 pieces of [00:07:00] silver man. He's sold to the . 30 pieces. Yeah. And this is was, uh, it was sold at 4:30 PM, which that, and we can talk about some of the symbolism of the 30 pieces of silver, because that kind of set off alarm bells for me. Yeah. That stands out. They make a really good job at making it, you know, uh, seem reasonable. Every, everybody is reasonable, all their motives and motivated.Uh, reasonable. So first of all, we have to say, Joseph, you're safe yourself. The reason that his name that this is his name is added like added on. He is like the added child. That's the explanation that we'll give him earlier in Genesis. And also Joseph is like an added son to Jacobs Sans, which are in the Bible, are all upon him, upon him as characters, which means that they have the name of.Uh, so Judah, the character, Judah is a character named [00:08:00] after the tribe, the kingdom of Judah, just given, uh, as a character, you have levy and all that. Those are. You know, we read it in the Bible as if that came first, but that didn't come first.

Jonathan Holloway, the President at Rutgers University, recently gave a speech to the Faculty Senate at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, a member of the Big Ten Conference. The speech caught national attention when he told the group “ For too long the entire Rutgers community has been laboring under the illusion that athletics will generate enough revenue to pay for itself and, then, in time turn a profit. Let me disabuse you of that claim. While I would be thrilled if athletics were to cover all of its expenses, it is highly unlikely that it will. Only 2 percent of major college athletics programs run in the black, and not many more than that break even. The better way to think about athletics is that it represents a commitment by the university that helps tell a compelling story about this institution—one that will inspire applicants, alumni, and friends to learn more about we have to offer as a university in 2022. In this regard, the story-telling capability of athletics far outstrips any other thing that we do at Rutgers." Is that an appropriate summary of where athletics should fit into a campus? Or can we find different ways to define how athletics fits into the campus and its culture? My guests today have led three different institutions, and have written two books on leadership and the presidency: their new book is called “Leadership Matters: Confronting the Hard choices Facing Higher Education”, as well as their previous book, “How to Run a College”, both from Johns Hopkins Press. Joseph King is the past president at Lyon College (MO) and Brian Mitchell is the current president of Academic Innovators, and a past president at Bucknell University (PA) and Washington and Jefferson College (PA). This week, the boys watch three Old Testament flicks that you probably never heard about for good reason: "Noah" (2014) where you see Russel Crowe's bare butt after the flod; "Joseph: King of Dreams" (2000), a second-rate cartoon musical with creepily emotive sheep; and "Sodom and Gomorrah - The Last Seven Days" (1975) a vintage porn involving ancient Israelians. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/smite-me-podcast/support

Joe Hill was born with the name Joseph King: he's the son of legendary author Stephen King. But Joe writes under the last name “Hill” out of a desire to succeed on his own merits. Now he's recognized as one of today's best horror writers. Hill is a New York Times #1 best-selling author whose novels include NOS4A2, Horns, Heart-Shaped Box and The Fireman. His latest book is Strange Weather, which is made up of four short novels. Joe talks this hour with fellow author (and native Michigander) Loren Estleman, who is best known for a series of crime novels featuring the investigator Amos Walker. Joe started off talking about and reading from one of the stories from Strange Weather. This event took place at the City Opera House in downtown Traverse City in October 2018. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nationalwritersseries/message

In this episode of DreamMachine, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2000 direct to video movie "Joseph: King of Dreams". Based on the Bible story on Genesis, Joseph is a beloved child by his father Jacob and his 10 older brothers are jealous of him. They get even more jealous when Jacob gave Joseph a coat of many colors and Joseph has prophetic dreams. Then the brothers plan on selling Joseph as a slave in Egypt and lie to their father telling him that he was killed by a wolf. Will Joseph make the best out of a bad situation? Will he ever see his family again?    When the movie was released, critics panned it calling a downgrade from The Prince of Egypt and has become obscure. It's currently the only direct to video movie Dreamworks ever released. Is it an underrated gem or is it a pale comparison to the masterpiece that is Prince of Egypt?

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Joseph: King of Dreams. A direct-to-video prequel to The Prince of Egypt, Joseph: King of Dreams retells the story of Joseph from the book of Genesis.  Led by his oldest brother Judah (Mark Hamill), Joseph (Ben Affleck) is sold into slavery as a prank. After cleaning floors, suffering in a pit, and explaining dreams, Joseph rises to prominence. Can he forgive his brothers when they need his help the most? Although it looks similar to The Prince of Egypt, Joseph: King of Dreams is a much cheaper affair. Neither the music or the story is as captivating, although there are moments of wonder in the dream sequences. A more intimate story by its nature, this movie tries its best and ends up waffling around. Things get moving once Joseph is sold off as a slave in Egypt.  Mat and Thrasher feel Deadpool 2 was a very good sequel emboldened by its more complicated story, greater variety of characters, and light tone.  Mat enjoys 78/52 Hitchcock's Shower Scene, an in-depth scholarly documentary on the infamous shower scene from Psycho. He also has enjoyed the antics of master impressionist Sour Shoes on The Howard Stern Show. Thrasher did not like revisiting Antz, finding it so boring he had to shut it off. He continues his voyage into the work of puppeteer Paul Fusco with the TV special A Far Out 4th; depsite some neat puppets, it too was a letdown.  Ratings for Joseph: King of Dreams: Mat: Sequel No Thrasher: Sequel Yes Follow the show on Twitter @Sequelcast2 Like our Sequelcast 2 Facebook Page The theme song to the Sequelcast is written and performed by Marc with a C.
