Greetings, Lowdowners—Deanna here! This summer, we're doing something a little different. Over the next few weeks, we're opening the gates a bit — giving free subscribers a taste of some of the exclusive stories, video, and behind-the-scenes Hightower that paid subscribers get regularly. If you've been on the fence about upgrading, consider this your invitation to see what you've been missing. To kick things off, I spent a day with Hightower in Austin last month, beer in hand at ABGB, talking with him about fifty-plus years of fighting the b******s. We've got a summer's worth of material to share with you, and I wanted to kick things off with the one that shows what organizing really looks like. Here's the setup: Hightower's Agriculture Commissioner, and he's just put forward the most progressive pesticide regulation in the country. The pesticide lobby is furious. So they get the governor to introduce legislation to gut his authority and make his office appointed instead of elected. Standard playbook—except for what happened next. The hearing room they'd booked was tiny. They had to move it to the House Chamber because Hightower's first witness was Willie Nelson. His second was Barbara Jordan. His third was the chairwoman of the Dallas Republican Women's Organization, who didn't love the idea of pesticides in her kids' food either. Not one committee member would make the motion to pass the bills. They lost without a vote. Here's the part I actually wanted to talk to him about, though: the celebrities weren't the strategy. They were the payoff. Hightower's team spent six months before that hearing building an actual coalition—farmers, farmworkers, consumers, local press. Willie and Barbara Jordan showed up because there was already a movement there to show up for. “They are the punctuation point of a movement that has already been built and is moving,” he told me. “Their presence encourages the movement,” but it doesn't replace it.It's a lesson that's aged exactly zero days in forty years: you don't win by getting a famous person to show up at your rally. You win by doing the unglamorous work first, and then the famous person shows up because there's something worth showing up for. It's your support that enables us to keep bringing the outside in, to keep sharing the ways we can fight together and have fun together. We know times are tighter than ever, and it makes your support mean even more to us. Thank you! Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Kate Adie introduces stories on Mexico's cartel war, President Trump's State of the Union address, the Russian soldiers escaping the front-line, and a slow boat journey in Benin.Mexico was rocked by a violent rampage this week, after the drug lord, El Mencho, died following a fire-fight between his bodyguards and Mexican military commandos. It's stark evidence of the challenges facing President Claudia Sheinbaum as she vows to take on the country's criminal gangs. Quentin Sommerville reports on the fallout following El Mencho's death and the disturbingly deadly rivalry between the cartels.'Our country is winning again,' was President Donald Trump's rallying cry at his State of the Union address this week in Washington DC, citing success in the jobs market and stopping illegal crossings at the southern border. But his sinking approval ratings suggest he's not necessarily convincing the public. Anthony Zurcher watched on in the House Chamber. The exact toll on Russian forces in Ukraine has been closely guarded by the Kremlin, but estimates suggest more than a million Russian troops have been killed or injured over the past four years. For those who refuse to fight the consequences can be severe. Ben Steele met Russian troops who have escaped the front-line, at great personal cost. The small West African nation of Benin is made up of around fifty different ethnic groups and languages. Most of the population is concentrated in the South - home to the country's main cities, such as the port of Cotonou. While Benin has only a handful of highways, its lush inter-connected lagoons provide a vital commercial artery. The State of the Union Address is one of the most anticipated political events of the year. Of course, it's surrounded by tradition and ceremony. All three branches of the federal government gather in the House Chamber, the galleries pack with guests from every walk of life, the pundits gather their audiences, and the cameras all focus on one carefully crafted message from the leader of the free world. But it's not just custom or tradition that gives rise to this historic event every year. It actually goes all the way back to the American founding, to the Constitution itself. Article II, Section 3, Clause 1 of the constitution reads as follows: The President “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” George Washington, then, was the first to give an address to congress. His eventual successor, Thomas Jefferson, submitted his remarks in writing, which set a precendent of written States of the Union. Over a century later, in 1913, Woodrow Wilson restored the practice of giving the speech in person. And that custom has stood to this day. Last night, we heard President Donald Trump give the first State of the Union address of his second term. The speech covered many of his accomplishments over the first year of this administration. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. In the foreign policy portion of his lengthy State of the Union address, US President Donald Trump repeated his oft-mentioned talking points about Iran, Magid reports, noting the president's terminology about never hesitating to confront threats against the US. Trump has said he is "aware of" last week's killing of Palestinian-American 19-year-old Nasrallah Abu Siam in an armed settler attack in the West Bank, and Magid reviews why the US administration has not commented or gotten involved in this latest incident of Jewish settler violence. As the US Embassy in Israel announces first-time pop-up locations for consular services in the Jewish settlements of Efrat and Beitar Illit, Magid discusses the decision to hold the project in these new locations. With a formal communication channel established between the Board of Peace and the Palestinian Authority, Magid discusses how the PA is seeking legitimacy and aims to be as involved as possible in the Gaza reconstruction. Magid also reports on conversations with Arab and European diplomats involved in the Board of Peace, and their comments about the enormous amount of pressure required to be applied on Hamas and Israel for the disarmament of Hamas to succeed. When today's show began, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries was at the podium in the House Chamber, giving a speech that is supposed to talk supporters of the Big Beautiful Bill NOT to support the passage in the upcoming vote to do so. Throughout the show, we monitored the status. Jeffries, who took the podium to begin his speech at 5:30 Eastern this morning, is still at the podium seven hours later! However, we covered a lot of ground:We discuss in detail the carryover from Trump's first term, including his need to deal with bureaucrats within the government who use their titles to attack the president in every possible way. In his first term, Trump had to replace many of these folks. It took a considerable amount of time to do that. To some degree, Trump is facing similar issues now.Another night of horror in Chicago. There was a mass shooting incident that happened overnight. Details in the show.Churches across the nation are making preparations to protect their members from physical harm at the hands of others. Security teams are becoming more necessary weekly as incidents of violence are growing in churches across the country. Our nation's interest rates need to be reduced! Details you'll hear in the show suggest that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is unwilling to lower rates, even as our economic numbers continue to improve. You'll hear about the specifics of dozens of other nations whose federal interest rates are significantly lower than ours.
Newt talks about his experience attending President Donald J. Trump's address to the joint session of Congress. He describes the atmosphere, interactions, and preparations leading up to the event, including a reception at Speaker Mike Johnson's office. Newt highlights the strategic seating arrangements and the anticipation of potential disruptions by Democrats, which were effectively managed by Speaker Johnson and the Sergeant at Arms. The address itself is detailed, noting Trump's extensive coverage of various topics, his engagement with the audience, and the contrasting reactions from Republicans and Democrats. Newt emphasizes the positive reception of Trump's speech, its impact on his agenda, and the stark division between the supportive Republicans and the unresponsive "Zombie Democrats."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The most dramatic moment of the evening occurred near the beginning of Trump's rambling, Congressional Address. Congressman Al Green, a democrat from Texas, screamed. "You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!" Trump was beginning his flurry of lies, half-truths, ridiculous exaggerations when Green, clutching his cane, had had enough. Eventually, the worst Speaker in History, ordered Capitol Police to haul Congressman away. Green told reporters outside the House Chamber that he could not sit silently by as Republicans attempt to cut Medicaid, Medicare, and SOCIAL SECURITY! Yup. Even though Trump has said he has no plans to cut these programs, Congressional Republicans are drafting the legislation right now, and Trump has not repeated his promise not to touch Social Security. Instead he repeated the MUSK LIES. Trump, Musk, and MAGA Mike Johnson have all claimed that Social Security is filled with graft and corruption and that 200-year-olds are getting checks. In this podcast I quote from several sources, including a Los Angeles Times article called "Trump, The GOP, and Doge have launched their attack on your social security. START WORRYING." 1- I had an interesting weekend, I might address some of the rumors suggesting I won the FAFO championship after Brandon Mardi Gras parade Friday night. Am I a changed man after this weekend or is just gonna be more of the same ol same? 2- Trump destroys the Democrats at the state of the union last night -Speaker Mike Johnson just ejected Deranged Democrat Al Green from the House Chamber for disrupting President Trump's speech -Al Green from Texas looks as dumb as Bennie Thompson -Democrat women wearing all pink to stand in solidarity with women 24 hours after voting to allow men to play in womens sports. Can someone explain what policies Trump has that are anti-women? - It is kinda funny that Trump has beaten 2 different so-called women's asses to win 2 of his 3 presidential election victories, then he also gets up there and single handedly defends women's rights - 3- Let's talk about Ukraine and Russia, I missed the last few days and haven't had a chance to discuss this matter. 4- I'm ready to start seeing some Democrats get perp walked, starting here locally of course and then on to the national cucks like Adam Schiff for his Ukraine connections 5- The tyranny of the trans movement reared its ugly head in Maine when a state representative lost her right to speak and vote after she dared speak out about a trans male/female who demolished the female competition in the state championship track meet.

In this riveting episode of Passing Judgment, host Jessica Levinson delves into the intricate legal battles surrounding former President Trump and the classified documents dispute. Our esteemed guest, Sarah Wire of the Los Angeles Times, unveils the complexities of Trump's assertion of ownership over crucial documents, a stance that's been thwarted by Judge Keenan's recent decision. Throughout the episode, we unravel the strategic delays in the courtroom, weigh the public's right to pre-election transparency, and examine how the pursuit of justice is not merely about the charges themselves, but about the far-reaching implications of cover-ups and electoral integrity. Join us as we pass judgment on these crucial issues that define not just legal boundaries, but also the very contours of our democracy. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:1️⃣ Significance of January 6th Insurrection: The podcast also deeply examines the January 6 insurrection, with Sarah Wire sharing firsthand accounts and emphasizing its historical significance. The conversation covers the actions leading to the insurrection, its classification, and the personal impact on those who reported from within the Capitol during the event.2️⃣ Presidential Records Act and Classified Documents: The Presidential Records Act is discussed, particularly in relation to former President Trump's claims over certain records. The rulings by Judges Keenan and Cannon are highlighted, exploring the legal boundaries of document ownership by a president.3️⃣ Public Interest in Trial Information: The episode delves into the debate surrounding the timing of trial information release, particularly in the context of elections. The emphasis is on whether the public should have access to trial details before casting votes and how reporters view their role in this process.Follow Our Host:On Threads: @LevinsonJessica
Jon Stewart, the renowned comedian and host of The Daily Show, has taken aim at Marjorie Taylor Greene, the controversial Georgia representative, in a scathing segment on his current show, Stewart's biting commentary came in response to Greene's recent stunt at President Joe Biden's State of the Union address, where she showed up wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat, a red blazer, and a "Biden Border Crisis" pin. During the episode, Stewart played a clip of Biden approaching the podium at the Capitol, surrounded by a divided Congress. As the camera zoomed in on Greene, Stewart quipped, "And so, Biden entered the House Chamber, navigating through our divided congress and barely, barely, getting past the bridge troll who guards the podium." The comparison of Greene to a "bridge troll" was a sharp jab at the representative's confrontational and divisive political style. Greene, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, has been a polarizing figure in American politics. She has consistently supported Trump's baseless claims of election fraud in the 2020 presidential race and has even attempted to impeach Biden. Her unwavering loyalty to Trump and her controversial statements have made her a target for criticism from both Democrats and more moderate Republicans. Despite the threat of removal from the State of the Union address due to her MAGA hat, Greene refused to comply with the warning from the Sergeant at Arms. While Congress doesn't have a strict dress code, head coverings were banned from the floor until 2019. Moreover, House rules prohibit the use of government premises for conducting campaign or political activities, which Greene's attire could be seen as violating. In addition to her MAGA hat, Greene wore a badge featuring the face of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant. Greene has been a vocal critic of Biden's border policy and used Riley's tragic story to push her agenda, urging the president to "say her name" during the speech. This is not the first time The Daily Show has taken aim at Greene this week. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the show shared a photo of Greene's outfit at the State of the Union address, comparing it to the staff uniform at the restaurant chain TGI Fridays. The caption read, "When you're a waitress at K.K.K. Fridays," drawing a comparison between Greene's red attire adorned with badges and the restaurant's distinctive uniforms. However, this post faced backlash, with some users accusing the show of indirectly mocking Riley's death with the joke. Greene's unwavering support for Trump has been a defining characteristic of her political career. She recently celebrated a "bloodbath" at the National Republican Convention, where Trump allies took control of the event, reportedly leading to significant staff cuts. Greene triumphantly declared on X, "MAGA is now in control of the Republican Party!!" In February, Greene made headlines when she accused Democrats of trying to give Trump a "death sentence." Her comments came in the wake of the passing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died while serving time for fraud charges in an Arctic jail. Opponents of Putin believe Navalny's imprisonment and death were politically motivated. Greene drew a comparison between Navalny's case and Trump's legal struggles, suggesting that Democrats could do the same to the former president. Greene has also been a vocal supporter of Trump's claims of corruption in the 2020 general election. She, along with several other Republican candidates, faced the risk of disqualification due to their association with these claims. However, a Supreme Court ruling in March determined that Trump could not be removed from the Colorado ballot, effectively ending other ongoing eligibility disputes. Jon Stewart's mockery of Marjorie Taylor Greene as a "bridge troll" is just the latest example of the comedian's willingness to call out politicians for their controversial actions and statements. Stewart, who has a long history of using humor to tackle serious political issues, has never shied away from criticizing those in power, regardless of their party affiliation. Greene's stunt at the State of the Union address, along with her history of divisive rhetoric and unwavering support for Trump, has made her an easy target for comedians like Stewart. However, it also highlights the deep political divisions that continue to plague the United States, with politicians like Greene seemingly more interested in generating headlines and pushing their own agendas than in working towards bipartisan solutions to the country's problems. As the United States continues to grapple with issues like immigration, election integrity, and political polarization, it is clear that figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene will remain a fixture in the news cycle. While comedians like Jon Stewart may use humor to call out their controversial actions, it is ultimately up to voters to decide whether they want to continue supporting politicians who prioritize stunts and divisive rhetoric over substantive policy solutions. On this episode of The Lobby Shop, co-host Paul Nathanson moderates a conversation with co-hosts Liam Donovan and Dylan Pasiuk. They discuss initial reactions to President Biden's final State of the Union prior to the November Presidential election, Biden's decision to open the speech with foreign policy, and how President Biden used this opportunity to both energize Democratic voters and spar with Republicans in the House Chamber. The group then turns to policy implications in the speech for the business community.
In this episode of iCantCU, I explain what Washington Seminar is and discuss various aspects of my trip to Washington, D.C., for the annual event. I was part of a team from the NFB of PA that I dubbed the PA-5 Guys since we (Simon, Chip, and me) are all from Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District. We met with Susan Wild, D-PA7. She is a big supporter of our issues, co-sponsoring two pieces of legislation on our agenda, H.R.5813 and H.R.1328. After the meeting, we got a pic with the Congresswoman. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-PA5, was busy voting in the House Chamber when we arrived for our meeting, so we met with her aide Maddi. As we were leaving her office, our Congresswoman arrived so we could introduce ourselves to her and get a pic. I introduced myself as Artemis's dad. My son works at the Swarthmore Co-op, a store the Congresswoman frequents when she is home. We lucked out on our final day while waiting for a meeting with anyone from Senator John Fetterman's office. While waiting in the hallway, the hoodie and shorts-wearing Senator arrived at his office, so we got a chance to speak with him briefly, along with a pic. Uber is back on the podcast; this time, it isn't about the app. I recount my trips and that some drivers don't understand what blind means. Even one driver said he had vision issues, just like me! 523. We talk to Diana M. Greenlee and Jenny Ellerbe about their book, Poverty: Revealing the Forgotten City. "The settlement of Poverty Point, occupied from about 1700 to 1100 BC and once the largest city in North America, stretches across 345 acres in northeastern Louisiana. The structural remains of this ancient site-its earthen mounds, semicircular ridges, and vacant plaza-intrigue visitors as a place of artistic inspiration as well as an archaeological puzzle. Poverty Point: Revealing the Forgotten City delves his enduring piece of Louisiana's cultural heritage through personal introspection and scientific exploration. With stunning black and white photography by Jenny Ellerbe and engrossing text by archaeologist Diana M. Greenlee, this imaginative and informative book explores in full Poverty Point's Late Archaic culture and its monumental achievements. This week in Louisiana history. May 18, 1896. New Orleans' 4,000-seat Saenger Theatre opened on February 4, 1927 after three years of construction at a cost of $2.5 million. It was the flagship of Julian and Abe Saenger's theatre empire and is one of a few still in existance. Being New Orleans, a parade of thousands formed on Canal Street on opening night where the most expensive tickets could be had for 65 cents. For the cost of admission was a silent movie, stage play, and music by the Saenger Grand Orchestra. With an interior designed by architect Emile Weil it was an "atmospheric theatre" — 150 lights in the ceiling are arranged in the shape of constellations in the night sky surrounding an Italian Baroque courtyard. It was an historic class of freshman members to Congress in 1974. It was made up of 17 Republicans and 74 Democrats and many would go on to become household names. They turned the inner workings of the House Chamber upside down, removing longtime chairmen, and opening up the rules for more transparency and more access, in ways that are still with us today. In the midst of all of this Speaker Carl Albert, with his Majority Leader Tip O'Neill , made a decision that one of these freshman needed to be in leadership and he picked the one he thought had the most potential, and the brightest future, John W. Jenrette Jr of the 6th District of South Carolina. In this episode we look back at this class through the eyes of John Jenrette as he recalls the moves that changed an institution. We remember some of the all stars of this class like Paul Tsongas, Paul Simon, Max Baucus, George Miller, Jeff Jeffords, Jim Florio, Henry Hyde, Tom Harkin, Henry Waxman, Larry Pressler, Butler Derrick, and the one member still serving in Congress today, now Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa. They left a mark on their times, so much so, they were all the subject of an extraordinary book "The Class of '74" by John Lawrence. We use excerpts from the author's excellent interviews available on You Tube ,where he discusses the 1974 class and its impact. https://youtu.be/E2MfhV8Ax0w An Interview with John Lawrence, author of "The Class of '74." - R Street InstituteJohn Lawrence , was a former Chief of Staff to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and worked for a while under Congressman George Miller, a member of the 1974 class. The book on the class received rave reviews like this one:"If you want to know how we got to this bitterly partisan time in politics, read this book. Through hundreds of fascinating interviews plus rigorous research, Lawrence shows us how unintended consequences of congressional 'reforms' started the country along this poisonous path. On Thursday, March 23rd, the Minnesota House held a floor session on the Kidnapping Bill (HF 146). Along with allied groups, we brought hundreds of people to the Capitol to show their opposition to this dangerous bill, which passed the House in the early hours of Friday morning despite vigorous opposition. Grace and Moses broadcast live from the Capitol with key updates, including exclusive behind the scenes content from a rally right outside the House Chamber where opponents and supporters converged. If passed by the Senate and signed by the Governor, this dangerous bill would allow a court of the state to take custody of children if parents do not want their children to undergo gender transition or other so-called “gender-affirming” procedures. Subscribe to The Family Beacon for key updates on this bill and ways to fight it! Get the facts, stand for truth. Note: Some clips from this episode are more suited to the video format. It's Thursday, February 9th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark International Christian Concern brings relief to Turkish Christians International Christian Concern reports it has staff on the ground in Turkey bringing relief to Christians after Monday's devastating earthquake there. Jeff King, ICC's president, shared yesterday that they are also helping Christians in Turkey rebuild their church buildings after the quake. King said they are trying to do this quickly before the government cracks down on the rebuilding process. King shared what persecution looks like for churches in the country. KING: “Christians in Turkey live as second-class citizens. There's constant discrimination in jobs in lots of areas. The churches receive constant harassment from the secret police. Then, every once in a while, a priest or a pastor is killed. So, it's a tough situation.” You can give to International Christian Concern's relief effort in Turkey through a special link. It's in our transcript today at TheWorldview.com. 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” Turkish and Syrian death toll now at 12,000 The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria Monday has risen to over 12,000 people, reports CBS News. Tens of thousands are injured, and thousands of buildings have collapsed. In the wake of the disaster, one rescue story has gone viral. A newborn baby was found still alive under a collapsed building in Syria on Tuesday. In God's providence, the baby girl survived the earthquake and the freezing temperatures, even though her immediate family did not. Rescuers took the newborn to a local clinic. Doctors say the baby is now stable. In State of Union, Biden championed more baby-billing and perversion Here in the U.S., someone did NOT stand up for the lives of babies on Tuesday. President Joe Biden gave his annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress in the House Chamber. (Here is a link to the transcript). Biden touted job creation stats and his administration's response to COVID-19. He accused Republicans of wanting to end Medicare and Social Security, drawing boos from GOP members. Listen. BIDEN: “Some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset. I'm not saying it's a majority. (Republicans boo) Let me give you. Anybody who doubts it, contact my office. I'll give you a copy … I'll give you a copy of the proposal.” The president also took the opportunity to promote the murder of unborn babies and sexually perverted lifestyles, as Democrats cheered and gave him standing ovations. Listen. BIDEN: “Congress must restore the right the Supreme Court took away last year and codify Roe v. Wade to protect every woman's constitutional right to choose.” (Applause by Democrats) “The Vice President and I are doing everything we can to protect access to reproductive health care and safeguard patient privacy. But already, more than a dozen states are enforcing extreme abortion bans. Make no mistake about it; if Congress passes a national abortion ban, I will veto it. (Applause by Democrats) “But let's also pass the bipartisan Equality Act to ensure LGBTQ Americans, especially transgender young people, can live with safety and dignity.” Isaiah 1:23 says, “Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not bring justice to the fatherless, and the widow's cause does not come to them.” Biden to Texas: Let pharmacies sell the Abortion Kill Pill Texas is one of those anti-abortion states that drew Biden's criticism in his address. The Lone Star State banned nearly all abortions last year. Now, the state's Attorney General is suing the Biden administration over a rule that requires pharmacies to provide Abortion Kill Pills. Attorney General Ken Paxton said, “Texas and several other states across the country have dutifully passed laws to protect the unborn, and we are not going to back down just because unelected bureaucrats in Washington want to create illegal, extremist federal policies.” Smithsonian Museum told pro-life students to leave A Smithsonian museum has apologized to a group of Catholic students for asking them to leave over their pro-life hats. This comes after the American Center for Law and Justice filed a lawsuit against the museum on behalf of the students last week. The students were in Washington, D.C. to participate in the annual March for Life on January 20th. After the march, they decided to visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The ACLJ noted that the students were “accosted several times and told they would be forced to leave unless they removed their pro-life hats . . . It is clear that these Christian students were kicked out of the museum solely because of their pro-life and religious views.” Christian Danes object to scrapping of Great Prayer Day And finally, thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark on Sunday, protesting government plans to scrap a Christian holiday. At least 50,000 people showed up for the country's biggest demonstration in over a decade. At issue is a new bill that would abolish the Great Prayer Day to help raise tax revenue for military spending. The day falls on the fourth Friday after Easter. King Christian V introduced the holiday in 1686 as a day of prayer and fasting. Historically, church bells would ring, like this one … (audio of Danish church bell) to commerce the holiday on which people would take a break from work and commerce.
