Pablo is the first guest that has the same name as me-- so you KNOW this episode will be great. Pablo hustled for months just to get to $70K in ARR. He got rejected from YC, re-applied, and finally got in.But after months in YC, he realized his first product was not going to work. He had some traction, but not nearly enough customer pull. So he shut it down. He went back to square one. He did customer discovery in a totally different space and leveraged the latest in Gen AI. He then built AI agents that automate calls in the logistics space.Just a year after shutting down his first product, he'd grown to $2.2M in ARR. In December, he raised $15.6M from a16z. Here's how it happened. Why you should listen: Why you should be careful of "free" money from grants. Why YC changed the trajectory of Pablo's startup. How a big pivot is often necessary-- even when you have customer traction. Why the key is to find a true, no-brainer pain point.Meeting customers where they are can lead to smoother adoption of new technologies. How to build a product that provides clear ROI is essential for customer buy-in.Continuous exploration and adaptation are key to finding the right market fit.KeywordsHappy Robot, startup journey, product market fit, early stage funding, co-founders, computer vision, YC, venture capital, entrepreneurship, business development, funding, European founders, Y Combinator, customer acquisition, pivoting, logistics, AI agents, startup growth, Series A, market researchSend me a message to let me know what you think!

Welcome to part 2 of our Gulf of Mexico getaway. This episode is all about the restaurants and delicious food we enjoyed while on vacation in Alabama's Gulf Shores area this past February. My husband Jason and I share our top five meals and places to eat, like a smoked turkey sandwich, dry aged Delmonico steak, key lime pie, eggs Benedict atop a waffle, fried pickles and fried chicken, candied yams, Gulf grouper, fontina dip, and mac and cheese. Plus, we talk about the smoked tuna dip and a salad we want to recreate at home. Although it was hard for us to rank our top five out of the more than 15 restaurants we dined at, our number ones ended up being the same, hands down, easy choice. A place that was such a memorable experience, we just knew we were in for something special from the time we called to make the reservation. We don't leave anyone out, so we include honorable mentions like the giant pepperoni pizza and the coffee shop we happened to eat at after we had to turn around and go back to the condo to get Jason's swim trunks. Stick around to the very end and we'll mention a few places we wanted to go to but ran out of time. Hopefully you've already listened to episode 16 when we talk about fun things to do while vacationing here. View photos and get the links on https://randomsweets.com/22-places-to-eat-in-alabamas-gulf-shores-area/ Website: randomsweets.com  Instagram: @potatoesandmittens Instagram: @randomsweets Facebook: Random Sweets Show Notes: Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii Big Mike's Steakhouse Brookman's Smokehouse Calavera Tacos Champ's Nashville Hot Chicken The Garden at Palafox & Main The Gulf The Hangout Hope's Cheesecake Janino's Pizza Jesse's Restaurant Moe's Original BBQ Ole River Grill at Flora-Bama Paula Deen's Family Kitchen Picnic Beach Bar and Grill Pink Pony Pub Pollman's Bake Shop Punta Clara Kitchen Scoops Ice Cream The Southern Grind Coffee House Spot of Tea Sunliner Diner Sweet Cone Alabama  A Sweet Secret Café & Bakery Tacky Jacks Waffle House --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/potatoesandmittens/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/potatoesandmittens/support

Our guest, Carmen Palafox, is a seasoned venture capitalist. She is a Founding Partner at 2045 Ventures in Los Angeles and Venture Partner at How Women Invest. She is also a Partner at MiLA Capital.Carmen was awarded the Rising Star Award from the Los Angeles Latino Chamber of Commerce. She was spotlighted by the NVCA as a Rising Star in VC and featured by LA Magazine as 1 of 13 of LA's Powerful Women. Coming out of USC, Carmen was fortunate to land her first job at Dimensional Fund Advisors, where she scaled operations into LATAM, Canada, and Europe, going from $75 Billion AUM to $300 Billion AUM.In this episode, Carmen shared her journey into venture capital, launching a fund, the challenges of women and underrepresented founders in the VC world, and what people can expect in the coming years despite the uncertainties in the industry.Episode Quotes:How Haas led her to venture capitalI went to Haas thinking that I'd get into social impact investing, and that was in 2011, when impact investing was a little earlier than it is today. At that time, there's a lot of talk around social impact bonds and pay for success, and that's where I was thinking my career would be headed. But, you know, one of the advantages of going to Haas was the career development group and just the support I got there and the freedom to really explore. And that exploration led me to venture. The challenges that women and underrepresented founders face in the VC industryAs women, we don't want to think that our gender will hold us back. But there are systemic issues. There's bias that people may or may not be aware of. And I think one of the reasons women are successful when they do get funding is because they are capital constrained and do have to be more efficient. I mean, the same is true for underrepresented founders. You just don't know if there will be capital around the corner, so you are more judicious with what you have. And on the flip side, I think there need to be more capital allocators that are focused on outcomes, meaning, we want to see more women founders, we want to meet more women funders. And so, being focused on that as a primary driver to change the status quo. I think it's important to create more balance in an ecosystem. I think that should be our objective. It should be about balance. And I think we would solve a lot of these unintended consequences that we see as a result of the technology that's out there today if we were to bring more balance to the industry.Opportunities for early-stage founders I think it's an epic time, both because of the reset but also the fact that we're coming out of Covid, and during Covid, people had a lot of time to evaluate how they were spending their time, where they were spending their time. And so, I think a lot of people, if they're able to, are prioritizing differently and potentially looking for areas where they can have the most impact in their careers, and where they can shift priorities to their families. I've seen or talked to a lot of startups that are able to attract talent because they have flexibility in how they're going to manage building their company. If you can offer someone with technical talent the ability to work off hours or work remotely from wherever they want, then I think you have an opportunity there as an early-stage founder.Show Links:LinkedIn Profile2045 CapitalHow Women InvestMiLA Capital (Make in LA)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

What is a transition assessment, and how do you know if your child needs one? If they do, when do they need it and what does it look like? There are a lot of questions about transition assessments and today we have the perfect guest to answer them all. Today, we welcome back Dr. Gwennyth Palafox (Dr. Gwen) to the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast. Dr. Gwen is a clinical psychologist and a fierce ally of neurodiverse and disabled individuals and has supported their wonderful families and support systems for over 25 years. She's laser-focused (and borderline obsessed) about empowering through reliable knowledge, creativity, and skill-building. She loves curating and collecting tools, sharing mindsets, and promoting habits to help the neurodiverse community thrive and find joy and meaning in their lives. Listen on to learn about what transition assessments entail, why they are important, and why you want to start transition planning early on.   Show Notes: [3:01] - The idea of transition is change. Change is not something that is abrupt, especially when it comes to development. [4:04] - Ideally, transition planning should happen when high school begins. [6:10] - “What does it take to live as an autonomous, fully independent adult?” [7:29] - For students with an IEP, they need an ITP. Dr. Gwen explains what that is and how many students don't know about it. [9:07] - This assessment must include more than where your child is academically. [10:03] - Dr. Gwen shares the most important skills for transition. [12:52] - When these skills are solid or at least emergent and we are focusing on the process of living in this world as an adult, we get postsecondary results. [14:58] - Skills are only built by experience. [17:31] - High school should be preparing students for adult life. [19:28] - Transition assessments and psycho-educational diagnostics are very different. [21:01] - Learning, living, and working are the three components of a transition assessment. [24:03] - Where we lose sight of the data is when we don't paint a qualitative picture of where the person is today. [27:17] - Good transition assessments connect to activities and community resources with the goal in mind of what comes next after high school. [28:49] - The student needs to be involved in this process. [31:01] - We need to presume competence when communicating to the student. [33:01] - Dr. Gwen always includes something in the transition assessment recommendations that parents and teachers can begin doing immediately. [35:22] - Assessment results can be overwhelming to families and having a transition plan early ensures that there's enough time for support.   About Our Guest: Dr. Gwen is a licensed psychologist who has been actively changing the lives of individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities for over two decades. She is laser-focused on promoting the happiness and wellbeing of disabled teens and adults and is a fierce ally of disabled individuals and their families. Dr. Gwen has shared her expertise in local and global workshops, at a TEDx event, as an expert witness, and in collaboration with other engaged and radically awesome professionals. Her clients are wonderfully complex, unique, and awesome. She says that out-of-the-box thinking, creativity, grit, and compassion are some of the best tools that she has.   Connect with Dr. Gwen: ChildNEXUS Provider Profile Meaningful Growth Website Dr. Gwen Empowered on YouTube   Links and Related Resources: Episode 47: Helping Students Transition to Adulthood with Dr. Gwennyth Palafox Be the Executive in Charge Trying to figure out next steps in supporting your child?  Book a 1:1 consultation with Dr. Karen Wilson - https://www.childnexus.com/consultation    Join our email list so that you can receive information about upcoming webinars - ChildNEXUS.com The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. My guest for this conversation is Dr. Gwen Palafox, a psychologist who has been supporting disabled and neurodivergent young adults in the transition to adulthood for more than twenty years. I brought Gwen on the show to talk about helping our teens and young adults “launch” into adulthood, specifically how to prepare for and help them acquire the skills and support that would help them move into the version of independent living that's right for them. In our conversation, we looked at some of the common challenges neurodivergent teens face in the transition to adulthood, how we can navigate systems and conversations with our kids to help them feel empowered and capable and have agency, and how to respond to our own concerns and fears about what comes next. Gwen is honored to be a part of the lives of her wonderfully complex, unique, and awesome clients and their families and you truly hear it in the way she speaks about her work in this interview.  Things you'll learn from this episodeThe underlying philosophy for the way Gwen supports young adultsThe critical skills neurodivergent young adults need in order to launch successfullyExamples of replacing automated support aids with self-management systems as a way to gain independenceThe power in engaging teens in small, daily chores as a way to shift responsibility and build skillsHow parents can support teens who are feeling scared and anxious about leaving home, especially in times of CovidThe common challenges neurodivergent teens face when transitioning into adulthoodHow Gwen's Bright Life System helps pinpoint the skills teens need to work on before leaving the school system Resources mentioned for a Neurodivergent Transition to AdulthoodDr. Gwen's Meaningful Growth websiteDr. Gwen's YouTube ChannelDr. Gwen on InstagramDevon Price on InstagramThe Bright Life System (use code TILT15 to get a 15 percent discount off this course)The Help Group (Sherman Oaks)Adulting Made Easy: Things Someone Should Have Told You About Getting Your Grown-Up Act Together by Amanda MorinSEL FrameworkFor more info, visit: https://www.tiltparenting.com/session295Support the show
