(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims kidnapped 53 Christians, killed one on Christmas Fulani Muslim herdsmen in Nigeria, Africa and other terrorists killed one Christian and kidnapped 53 more on Christmas Day in southern Kaduna state. This comes after militants killed 40 believers in the week leading up to Christmas. One local resident said, “Mass graves litter the community and the countryside. Our people can no longer go to their farms for fear of being gunned down or macheted. Lamentably, the Fulani terrorist attacks have continued unabated as they are heard chanting, ‘Allah Akbar [Allah, the moon god, is greater]' during the killing and destructive expeditions.” Please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ in Nigeria. GOP conservatives reject Kevin McCarthy for House Speaker The House adjourned without a speaker on Tuesday for the first time in a century after Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy of California failed in a third straight vote for the gavel, reports Politico.com. It comes after 19 Republican conservatives derailed McCarthy's first and second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party further into chaos on their first day in the majority. Twenty House Republicans threw their support behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who has repeatedly said he does not want the gavel, which sunk McCarthy's bid to take the position on the opening day of Congress. In fact, Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida slammed Kevin McCarthy as he nominated Jim Jordan. Listen. GAETZ: “Maybe the right person for the job of Speaker of the House isn't someone – [McCarthy] -- who wants it so bad. Maybe the right person for the job of Speaker of the House isn't someone who has sold shares of themselves for more than a decade to get it. (surprised reaction) Maybe Jim Jordan is the right person for Speaker of the House because he is not beholden to the lobbyists and special interests who have corrupted this place and corrupted this nation under the leadership of both Republicans and Democrats. “Maybe Jim Jordan would be the right person for Speaker of the House because he wouldn't fight us when we try to get a term limits bill on the floor. Maybe Jim Jordan would be the right person because he wouldn't fight us when we try to put a balanced budget on the floor and vote for it. And maybe Jim Jordan is the right person because he would endorse the plan that was built by the Texas delegation to finally secure our border.” McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi. Before the vote, Gaetz said, "Those of us who will not be voting for Kevin McCarthy today take no joy in this discomfort that this moment has brought. But if you want to drain the swamp, you cannot put the biggest alligator in charge of the exercise. I'm a Florida man and I know of what I speak.” New York judge allows people to pack heat at church Last Thursday, a U.S. federal judge temporarily blocked a New York State law that prohibits people from carrying firearms in houses of worship. Pastor Michael Spencer of His Tabernacle Family Church is challenging the law and is represented by First Liberty Institute. Ryan Gardner with First Liberty said, “Singling out houses of worship for total disarmament demonstrates hostility toward religion, leaves them defenseless to rebuff violent attacks, sticks the state's nose into how religious services are conducted, and defies at least two recent Supreme Court rulings against New York.” Sean Feucht vs. Antifa at defaced San Diego church Antifa members defaced City View Church's building in San Diego, California last week. The church was planning on holding a New Year's Eve worship service led by Christian singer Sean Feucht. Police are investigating the attack as a hate crime. The far-left activists spray painted profanities and threats on the church building. According to a video of one tweet, Feucht told ChurchLeaders.com, “The church isn't a building. We're the bride of Christ and in 2023 we're rising up like never before.” FEUCHT: “Rejoice and be glad. So, that's what we're going to do in San Diego tonight. We've been persecuted. All kinds of crazy stuff has been said. This church has been vandalized. But you know what? Tonight, you're going to see a resilient church. This is a prophetic night for what God is doing in 2023. You're going to see a church rising up in boldness, rising up in courage.” Matthew 5:10-12 says, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in Heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Court upholds school's right to restrict bathrooms to biological sex Last Friday, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a Florida school district's anti-transgender policy. The St. Johns County School Board has a bathroom policy that distinguishes students based on biological sex. A female student pretending to be a boy sued the school over the policy. The ruling noted, “The school board's bathroom policy is clearly related to — indeed, is almost a mirror of — its objective of protecting the privacy interests of students to use the bathroom away from the opposite sex and to shield their bodies from the opposite sex in the bathroom.” Wall Street's worst year since 2008 And finally, Wall Street ended its worst year since 2008 last Friday. All three major stock indices reported painful losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 8% for 2022. The S&P 500 dropped nearly 20%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell over 30%. Media and tech companies recorded some of the biggest losses. The Walt Disney Company, Netflix, Comcast and other media groups lost over half a trillion dollars in market value last year. Disney stock, in particular, dropped 45% as the company continues to support sexually perverted lifestyles. He studied the bible over winter break and was baptized the day before he flew back for the spring semester. He played college football at Colorado State and studied Kinesiology. After 2 years in Fort Collins, he transferred to Texas A&M-Kingsville and was a part of the 25 person mission team to plant the church in Corpus Christi, TX. It was also during this time that he began to date his wife, Monique. He finished playing football there and graduated in 2017. During that final semester in school, Kyle felt called to go into the full time ministry and was hired in 2018. Later that year he married Monique. They have two beautiful daughters, Kaliah (2) and Alina (4 months). Currently, Kyle leads the Northside College Ministry in the North Region of the San Diego Church and helps oversee the congregational campus in San Diego. Annie Silipo is covering this crucial aspect of our lives as human beings- the pursuit of peace in the midst of conflict. This episode helps us see conflict as a great opportunity to glorify God instead of a hassle to avoid. When we have this biblical perspective the outcome will be peace with God, ourselves and others. About the Speaker: Annie was born in Havana Cuba. Her family immigrated to Miami, Florida in the early 60’s. She attended the University of Florida where she obtained her Animal Science degree and more importantly became a disciple of Jesus. Shortly after graduation she moved to Boston to train for the full time ministry. While in Boston she met her husband Joe and they were married in 1986. Her and Joe have three wonderful children- Lynda, Joseph and Sammy. They have had the pleasure of serving in the full time ministry in several different churches including as missionaries in Milan, Italy. They are very grateful to currently be serving in the San Diego Church of Christ.Episode Notes: Conflict Resolution Class 2Matt 7:5 Take responsibility first before pointing the finger. Look at your own heart first.-Humility breeds humility. We can’t see the situation clearly without clear eyes. In this position of looking at your own heart first, it is possible to have one of two types of faults:1. Overly sensitive/easily bothered2. Contribution through your own sinful behavior.We can learn to overlook minor offenses: Prov 19:11, 17:14, 1 Peter 4:8 Eph 4:2, Col 3:13-When we overlook offenses we imitate God’s extraordinary forgiveness towards us. do not overlook if it is a hurtful pattern in that person's life.How to overlook? Phil 4:4-91. Rejoice..joyfully god centered, grateful 2. Gentleness, forbearing, large hearted, considerate, lenient, moderate, etc3.Rid of anxious thoughts replace these with prayer and petition w/thanks to become confident and trusting 4.Shift your focus to the positive. ..Prov 11:27: if look for bad, you will find it! Avoid unnecessary conflict...Think through: is it worth it? What is the cost? does it really matter? pick your battles!-Being heard and validated cannot be the only goals in conflict resolution.1 Cor 10:23-24 is it permissible for me to defend myself?Yes...but a better question, is it beneficial?1 Cor 10:31-11:1 Conflict begins in the heartJames 4:1-3 reasons for conflict with others:1. Do not ask God, trust God, give way to fear 2. Wrong motives, desires or comfort… where are we looking for fulfillment?Desires can become demand, or something we deserve in order to be happy or fulfilled or be ok with that person. Luke 12:29-31- Idolatrous demands usually leads us to judging others..when people fail to live up to our expectations or fail to satisfy us we criticize, condemn them in our hearts even words. James 3:13-4:1-3, 7-12 - There is a time to judge rightlyMatt 7:1-5, but we cross the line when we sinfully judge..describe..superiority, condemnation, speculation of motives, resentment, bitterness. Episode Notes: Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God” What a privilege to be called a son and daughter of God. We should have a goal of becoming peacemakers. Lets get good at it for our sake and for the sake of others.1 Corinthians 10:31 “In all things for the glory of God” The goal of conflict resolution is to glorify God. Only in this process of glorifying God is where we find joy and peace in relationships.So how do we glorify God through conflict?1. Believe that conflict provides opportunity. It provides an opportunity to honor God. What are some causes of conflict?Misunderstanding due to poor communicationDifferences in expectations,values, opinions, goals and interestsCompetition over limited resourcesSinful attitudes and habits 2. Live at peace with each other Romans 12:17-19 “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as long as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge my friends but leave room for God’s wrath”.The opposite of conflict is peace. The world is desperately seeking peace. God communicates in the Bible his deepest desire to bless us with peace.Ephesians 4:3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Peace binds us. It is God’s desire and his command for us to make every effort to keep this bond.Nothing reveals God’s concern for peace and unity more vividly than his decision to send his son. God understands that without this peace and unity we can never influence the world for him.John 17:23 “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me”He also teaches us that we can not love and worship properly if we at odds with each other and have not made every effort to reconcile 1 John 4:19-21……3. On Sunday, August 4, 2019, guest speaker Steve Haas continues the sermon series, “Wisdom in Bite-Size Pieces” with a sermon on “Wisdom in friendship.” The worship service kicks off with worship through song led by Kalina Wilson and Bill Pomeroy, leading us in “Draw Me Close” and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus.” After a two-song worship set, the congregation greets those around them, and then Tantiani Budiman (Director of Eastgate Christian School) gives the morning announcements. Following the announcements, Steve Murray and Tantiani provide an update on ECS - the preschool that operates on-site Monday-Friday on campus. Steve Murray then prays for the offering and gives an introduction to the guest speaker. As the ushers pass around the baskets for the offering, the worship band sings, “In Christ Alone.” Steve Haas then comes up to the stage to give the message of the morning. The sermon is followed by Holy Communion. The worship band sings "It Is Well With My Soul" during Communion. After Communion we pray for the Agarwal family who is moving away. "This I Believe (The Creed)" is performed by the worship band as people leave the service. Kalina and Bill are joined by Lincoln Ballard on electric guitar, Bob Sale on drums, and Tim Rayner on bass guitar. A gifted and dynamic spokesperson for World’ Vision’s worldwide humanitarian work, under the title “Catalyst,” Steve can be found engaging faith leaders, strategizing on World’ Vision’ s major initiatives or communicating about global issues that affect the poor. ‘Steve’s background has entailed serving on the staff of ‘Illinois’ Willow Creek Community Church to facilitating Socratic forums for Fortune 500 executives to refugee relief work on Cambodia/Vietnam border. He joined World Vision in 2001.

Craig Stephenson and Janna Mattia lead worship through music with "Here I Am To Worship" and "What a Beautiful Name." Following worship guests are invited to stand and greet one another. Then Nicole Pearson (formerly of the LJCC Board of Trustees) gives the morning announcements. Hung-Wei Tsung then gives the Prayers of the People. Pastor Steve Murray gives an introduction to Ben Patterson and then Ben gives the sermon. The morning offering is taken and the band leads us back into worship through song with a new song - "All Who Are Thirsty," followed by "Tremble." In this special episode of the podcast, Jessica Paige and Lupita Sandoval share their journey of grieving in the arms of God. These two friends stop by to open their hearts to all of us and share the healing that has taken place in the midst of their mourning. Jessica, 27, lost both of her beloved parents in recent years and Lupita, 26, lost her mother last year just one short month after she received a cancer diagnosis. They answer the question that lies heavy on any grieving heart: “Where do I go when hope is gone?” About the Speakers: Jessica is a San Diego native who loves to travel, try new Airbnb's, and discover the best chai tea lattes at different cafes! She is currently taking on photography as a hobby that might turn into a career. She has been a disciple of Christ for almost 9 years and couldn't be more sure that following God was the best decision she ever made. Lupita is also a San Diego native and a nature lover. As she pursued her major in Environmental Science, she learned about God and became a member of the San Diego Church of Christ. Episode Notes: Lamentations 3:18-21: I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. So I say, “My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the Lord.” I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”Q: Where do I go when hope is gone? John 11:4We need to acknowledge the kingdom and the ways God wants to use His people to share His comfort with you. Philippians 4:7- And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."You have access the peace that passes understanding through God’s love and comfort. Thanksgiving and grief go hand in hand. Reference to “A Shepherd’s Look at Psalm 23”It’s in the valleys that we find God’s refreshment. Don’t forget- God can restore your spirit. It is so important to learn what your needs are so that you can communicate them to those around you.Practicals for those in the valley of grief:1. Recognizing WHEN you are grieving can be hard, but we can learn to sit in that and accept the emotions and the questions that come along with it, instead of trying to push them away. 2. Grief doesn’t have boundaries- it will spill into your work, your relationships, and everything else. And you will feel it in different and unique ways. Acknowledging this is empowering. 3. Prayer is so important in the grief process- you can come to Him as you are and be real with the rawness of your emotions in order to access some of His peace and comfort. Tips for comforting those around us that are grieving:Just Ask. Don’t be insecure. Ask what your friend’s needs are all often because it my change on a daily basis. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! What NOT to say to someone grieving: “Well AT LEAST (fill in the blank).” Try to avoid attempting to lessen the hurt because honestly, you can’t.
