In 1970, Avon Books published a landmark anthology, “Science Fiction Hall of Fame,” featuring 26 classic short stories that represent landmark tales of the genre. The stories were voted on by the members of the new (at the time, in the late 1960s) organization Science Fiction Writers of America. In this series, I will be joined by a panel of guests to break down these stories and talk about the authors in the book. In this episode, I am joined by Patrick B. He is the Faculty Director of EagleCon, SFAM conference Cal State LA's convention devoted to exploring and advocating for diversity in SF across media. He is the author of Darwinian Feminism and Early Science Fiction: Angels, Amazons, and Women (New Dimensions in Science Fiction) and co-editor of Sisters of Tomorrow (with Lisa Yaszek) and Audrey Taylor is an Assistant Professor of English at Colorado State-Pueblo. This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. There were three authors who were considered the Big Three in the Golden age: Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein. We will look at all three, but this episode is a look at Asimov, from his beginnings to the writing of his most famous work, the Foundation series. We will see what this series was saying in its original form of the Foundation Trilogy, then at the expansion of the series in the 1980s when Asimov took it up again. We will also mention the trilogy assigned to three other writers in the late 1990s, and to the audio and video adaptations. Buildup of a protein called filamentous actin, or F-actin, in the brain inhibits the removal of cellular wastes, including DNA, lipids, proteins and organelles. The resulting accumulation of waste diminishes neuronal functions and contributes to cognitive decline. By tweaking a few very specific genes in the neurons of aging fruit flies, the researchers prevented F-actin buildup, maintained cellular recycling and extended the healthy lifespan of fruit flies by approximately 30%. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/10/241028164423.htm   Support You Local Theater: Ben when to the Great American Melodrama for the third or fourth time. A short story by Shirley Jackson that was first published in The New Yorker on June 26, 1948. The story describes a fictional small American community that observes an annual tradition known as "the lottery", which is intended to ensure a good harvest and purge the town of bad omens. We discuss the importance of questioning traditions and scientific thinking. Are there any winners in this lottery? “In fact, every copy of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery has been checked out from the Springfield public library. Of course the book does not contain any hints on how to win the lottery. It is rather a chilling tale of conformity gone mad.” – Simpsons, Dog of Death, S3Ep19 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryr06emUnRw&ab_channel=TimThoughts https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=273395915450826   Next week we're reading Nightfall by Isaac Asimov. Louis Padgett's story, “Mimsy Were the Borogoves” was originally published in the February 1943 issue of “Astounding Science Fiction Magazine”. It was judged by the Science Fiction Writers of America to be among the best science fiction stories written prior to 1965, and in 2007 it was loosely adapted into a feature-length film titled The Last Mimzy. The title of the original short story was directly inspired by a verse from "Jabberwocky", a poem found in the classic novel Through the Looking-Glass by author Lewis Carroll. And in 1976, Caedmon Records released a spoken word album of the short story, narrated by William Shatner. Well – I don't know that I'll be as entertaining as William Shatner with the story, but I'll do my best for you.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Mimsy Were The Borogoves” by Lewis Padgett from the book “The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume 1, 1929-1964”: https://amzn.to/3ZqjVvlWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. I assume it would be easier on y'all (production team, that is) and, perhaps, it would give an ample amount of time for the audience to respond. Just my two cents. Love your work, Scott! You and Ian (from HorrorBabble) are, in my humble opinion, truly two of the best narrators on YT!!!” Thanks, rodneydangerman9616!! His name was legally changed to Theodore Sturgeon at age eleven after his mother's divorce and subsequent marriage. Sturgeon's 1953 science fiction novel More Than Human won the 1954 International Fantasy Award as the year's best novel, and the Science Fiction Writers of America ranked "Baby Is Three" number five among the "Greatest Science Fiction Novellas of All Time" up to 1964. Ranked by votes for all of their pre-1965 novellas, Sturgeon was second among authors, behind only Robert Heinlein. He was good and he was prolific! He wrote almost 200 short stories and the screenplays for two Star Trek episodes, and two of his stories were adapted for The New Twilight Zone. This week the I am reading from Kevin Randle's book '1973: A Time of UFO Sightings, Landings and Abductions'.The year, 1973, was a pivotal year for UFO sightings. In 1973: A Time of UFO Sightings, Landings and Abductions, the history of these sightings and the importance of them is explored. It was a time of unprecedented landings with beings from inside the craft seen outside gathering samples of the local flora and fauna. But the most significanct differences were the tales of alien abduction with the best documented of those cases being that reported by Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker. Add to that, the many sightings that involved electromagnetic effects and the close encounter experienced by a National Guard helicopter crew led by Captain Lawrence Coyne the case for the extraterrestrial explanation for many UFO sightings becomes infinitely stronger. The book provides a history of UFO sightings, independent documentation for the extraordinary events, and a suggestion of what might be coming in the future.BioKevin D. Randle is a retired lieutenant colonel who served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and in Iraq as a battalion intelligence officer. He began writing for UFO magazines and eventually moved onto books. A goal had been to publish science fiction and to join the Science Fiction Writers of America. He has appeared on countless radio and television programs in the mid-1990s hosted his own show on KTSM Radio in El Paso, Texas. To prove that he hasn't been stuck in a rut, he has written books about UFOs, science fiction, action adventure and even a vampire novel called, cleverly, VAMPYR.http://kevinrandle.blogspot.com/Amazon link http://rb.gy/arz9dhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-different-perspective-with-kevin-randle/id1239484934https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/alienufopodcast

Asimov's astounding productivity saw him produce over 500 books, covering diverse genres like hard science fiction, mysteries, fantasy, and popular science. His most iconic creation was the "Foundation" series, which earned the prestigious Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series." Shoemaker is a writer with a lucrative programming habit. As a child he told stories to imaginary friends and learned to type on his brother's manual typewriter even though he couldn't reach the keys. (He types with the keyboard in his lap still today.) He couldn't imagine any career but writing fiction . . . until his algebra teacher said, “This is a program. You should write one of these.” Fast forward 30 years of programming, writing, and teaching. He was named an MVP by Microsoft for his work with the developer community. He is an avid role-playing gamemaster, but that didn't satisfy his storytelling urge. He wrote, but he never submitted until his brother-in-law read a chapter and said, “That's not a chapter. That's a story. Send it in.” It won second place in the Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest and earned him lunch with Buzz Aldrin. Programming never did that! Martin hasn't stopped writing (or programming) since. His work has appeared in Analog, Galaxy's Edge, Digital Science Fiction, and select service garages worldwide. His novellaMurder on the Aldrin Express was reprinted in The Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirty-First Annual Collection and in Year's Top Short SF Novels 4. In addition, Martin's work has appeared in Clarkesworld, Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, Galaxy's Edge, Digital Science Fiction, Forever Magazine, Humanity 2.0, The Year's Top Short SF Novels 4, Writers of the Future Volume 31, Time Travel Tales, Trajectories, Little Green Men: Attack!, The Glass Parachute, and The Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirty-First Annual Collection. Martin's Clarkesworld short story "Today I Am Paul" was nominated for a Nebula award by the Science Fiction Writers of America and received the Small Press Award from the Washington Science Fiction Association. “Today I Am Paul” has also appeared in The Best Science Fiction of the Year Volume 1, The Year's Best Science Fiction & Fantasy 2016 Edition, The Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirty-Third Annual Collection, and The Year's Top Ten Tales of Science Fiction 8, as well as seven international translations. Blue Collar Space is the name for Martin's series of near-space, near-future hard science fiction stories. These stories are set on Luna, on Mars, in Jupiter orbit, and everywhere in between. It includes the award-winning stories "Scramble" (second place, Jim Baen Memorial Short Story Award, 2012), "Unrefined" (third place, Writers of the Future, 2014), and "Racing to Mars" (first place, Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact Analytical Laboratory award, 2016), as well as numerous other short stories, novelettes, and novellas. His novella "Murder on the Aldrin Express" was reprinted in Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirty-First Annual Collection. Find out more at: Shoemaker.Space

Well – I don't know that I'll be as entertaining as William Shatner with the story, but I'll do my best for you.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Mimsy Were The Borogoves” by Lewis Padgett from the book “The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume 1, 1929-1964”: https://amzn.to/3ZqjVvlVisit our Sponsors & Friends: https://weirddarkness.com/sponsors Join the Weird Darkness Syndicate: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicate Advertise in the Weird Darkness podcast or syndicated radio show: https://weirddarkness.com/advertise= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library.
