POPULARITY
FUN HALF LINK HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDKZ_baYEXA&ab_channel=TheMajorityReportw%2FSamSeder It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Ben Terris, writer in the Washington Post's Style section, to discuss his recent book The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind. Then, she's joined by Kaniela Ing, National Director of the Green New Deal Network and former member of the Hawaii House of Representatives, to discuss the ongoing recovery efforts from the Maui wildfires, and how the aftereffects of colonialism are still affecting Hawaii to this day. First, Emma runs through updates on the Maui wildfires' climbing death toll, another wildfire in Canada, Trump's legal cases, Rudy's legal bills, the upcoming UAW strike vote, abortion rights in the US, action from far-right legislatures in the US, and a potential Lula-Biden meeting, before diving into recent revelations on Roger Stone's most unsurprising role in Trump's conspiracy. Ben Terris then joins, diving right into his project studying the impact of Trump's “shock” to the DC system, and how his victory inflamed all of the worst elements of the Capitol, making it somehow even more grifty, shifty, and power-hungry. Terris dives into his work profiling Matt Schlapp, Robert Stryk, and Sean McElwee, to explore how they capitalized on a shifting power structure in DC by clinging firmly to Trump, knowing the right people, and betting their way to the top, respectively. Kaniela Ing then joins as he first provides background on the devastating impact of the recent wildfires in Maui, burning through the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Lahaina, with thousands missing alongside the over 100 declared dead. After walking through the response from the Hawaiian community, as well as the best way to help from the outside, Ing and Emma tackle the ongoing invasion of disaster capitalists in the wake, attempting to extort devastated Hawaiians for their land, and coming in under the guise of aid solely to exploit. Wrapping up, Kaniela walks through Hawaii's history with colonial capitalism (particularly in the wake of disasters), and what the major challenges of the rebuilding process will be. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they discuss the outrageous second attempt at canceling Richard Hanania for doing race science again, watch Bill Maher expertly interrupt Marianne Williamson to explain that poor people don't matter because he can't see them, and a caller from Baltimore poorly starts a conversation on law and marginalized rights. Nick from Houston Food Not Bombs calls in to explore Houston's criminalization of feeding the homeless as a part of the US' greater fascistic attack on the unhoused, and Kristi Noem makes Hillary Clinton look good. Rudy Giuliani continues his pathetic little downfall, and Guy from Charlotte calls in about the Right's love for ahistory, plus, your calls and IMs! Mediaite editor Aidan McLaughlin speaks with Washington Post writer Ben Terris about his new book, "The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind." They discuss how D.C. never returned to normal in the wake of Trump's presidency, and how characters on both sides of the political aisle — from Matt Schlapp to Sean McElwee — are keeping the town weird. They also discuss Terris's writing style, how he gets into the homes and minds of his subjects, and whether he harbors any hope D.C. will return to the pre-Trump status quo.
Today we're talking about political gambling and, more specifically, about Sean McElwee, who was the founding Executive Director of Data For Progress and a big winner in Trump's Washington ... until he wasn't. First we are joined by author Ben Terris, whose new book is The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind. Then we turn the conversation to then David Rees, one of the hosts of the Election Profit Makers podcast about election-prediction markets. Also, El Pequeño Niño es mas ordinario. Today we're joined by journalist Ben Terris, who's been sort of shadow-programming the show recently with his pieces on Sean McElwee, Diane Feinstein's staff, Tommy Tuberville's advisors and questions about Tim Scott's virginity. We discuss Trump's federal indictment over the “boxes hoax,” and the growing feeling that ol' Donny might possibly maybe finally be kind of fucked. Then we talk to Ben about his new book “The Big Break,” and learn more about all the McElwee-esque DC creeps, weirdos and gamblers he's come to know investigating the world of post-Trump Washington. You can find Ben's book here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/ben-terris/the-big-break/9781538708057/?lens=twelve
Ben Terris is a feature writer at The Washington Post, where he's carved out a unique role: reporting on what he calls, “the weirdo beat.” While Ben's colleagues focus on what's happening on the main stage in politics, he keeps an eye on the freak show that's happening just out of sight. This week, Ben published his much-anticipated book “The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind.” “The Big Break” has a novel argument: that if you want to understand how American politics works in the post-Donald Trump era – then you really, really have to understand Ben's field of expertise: weirdos. On this episode of Playbook Deep Dive, Playbook co-author and Deep Dive host Ryan Lizza joins Ben to discuss the rise and fall of the influential oddballs chronicled in “The Big Break,” and what their stories say about the future of politics. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Ben Terris is a feature reporter covering national politics for The Washington Post. Afra Abdullah is an associate producer for POLITICO audio. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio. Jenny Ament is the executive producer for POLITICO audio.
Ben Terris, author of “The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind,” joins Jordan for a fun chat about the characters, stories and insights in his new book. The conversation ranges from an oil tycoon's granddaughter funding progressive politics to a right wing lobbyist faking it until he makes it. We also talk about disgraced face of CPAC Matt Schlapp's role in DC and how Sean McElwee's gambling habit, in part, got him pushed out of Data for Progress. Before Jordan's conversation with Ben, Rob and Jordan discuss the wildfires in Canada and how Americans' dismissive attitudes about it (that it's either some grand conspiracy or “just arson” ultimately miss the point). And Donald Trump gets indicted again. What happens when the “sideshow characters” of national politics are suddenly thrust onto the main stage? And in a post-Donald Trump Washington, where are they now?Read more:Ben Terris has spent years covering politics via the people on the fringe: operatives who aren't well known but are key to understanding how Washington works. When a former reality TV show host became president, suddenly some of those political oddballs were running things. Terris's book, “The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind,” details the stories of people such as Sean McElwee, the pollster-turned-political-gambler who fell out of favor in Democratic circles, and Ian Walters, a longtime conservative communications director who broke with his closest friends after they staunchly backed Trump. In today's episode, Terris recounts the characters he met covering the Trump administration and how they've changed the face of power in Washington.
Sean McElwee, former Data for Progress founding executive director, and former Bernie Sanders aide Ari Rabin-Havt discuss progressive opposition to political prediction markets and when Biden will likely announce his re-election campaign. Pratik, Gaeten, and Zoltar announce Golden Modelo awards for Rookie of the Year and Best Shitposter.
Cinematographer Sean McElwee (Little Fish, Horse Girl, Room 104) discusses his favorite David Fincher movie, Zodiac.
I know this is not of interest to everybody, which is why I've made it a separate bonus episode you can skip. But if you are extremely online like many of us are, you may have seen the spate of articles about Sean McElwee, his departure from Data for Progress, and allegations about participating in illegal straw donor conspiracies. Carl Beijer is one of the great Sean chroniclers and so I've brought him on to fill in all the details. His website --> https://carlbeijer.com/
Sean McElwee is a well-known progressive activist who started the “Abolish ICE” movement and in 2018 founded Data for Progress, a progressive think tank with an emphasis on influencing public policy through polling. DFP quickly embedded itself into the top layers of the Democratic firmament. More recently, McElwee became a close political ally and adviser to FTX founder SAM BANKMAN-FRIED. McElwee had easy access to the White House and the press. And he made sure they had access to him. He kept an open Slack channel at DFP that became a rolling conversation between McElwee, Biden administration officials, and some well-known reporters. On Saturday, November 12, the day after FTX filed for bankruptcy and SBF resigned as CEO, McElwee abruptly shuttered the Slack channel. Six days later, he and Data for Progress began negotiating his exit from the firm he had built. At the time, the reported reason for the rupture was that McElwee's well-known penchant for betting on the outcomes of elections created a conflict of interest for a polling firm. A slew of 2022 DFP polls had a GOP bias, and activists on Twitter— as well as some prominent Democrats pinging reporters— asked whether McElwee was cooking DFP's polls to affect races and cash in. Sources at DFP insist that this would have been highly unlikely, and that their polls had a GOP bias because of an oversampling of respondents via SMS. In the wake of this, DFP recently adopted a previously unreported “Gambling and Wagering Policy” that prohibits employees from betting on anything related to DFP projects or clients. The McElwee-DFP breakup was ugly, but the two sides were trying to negotiate an amicable separation agreement and a severance. Then on Dec. 13, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York unsealed an eight-count indictment against SBF. The first seven counts, which were about financial crimes, garnered the most attention. But it was the eighth count that turned heads in Washington, alleging a straw-donor scheme in which SBF funneled corporate money to candidates and committees through third parties. And SDNY alleged that SBF had help: SBF “and others known and unknown,” the indictment says, made contributions “in the names of other persons.” In the race to figure out who might have helped SBF make straw donations, McElwee's name was at the top of the list. The leadership at DFP suddenly feared they could be in the middle of a much bigger scandal.

With the midterms just over six months away, the electoral prospects for Democrats are looking bleak. President Biden's approval rating is at 42 percent, around where Donald Trump's was at this point in his presidency. Recent polls asking whether Americans want Republicans or Democrats in Congress found that Republicans are leading by about 2 percentage points. And with inflation spiking to its highest point in decades, Covid cases rising and Russia's invasion of Ukraine continuing to send economic and humanitarian shock waves across the globe, things don't look as if they are going to get better anytime soon. What will it take for Democrats to turn things around? What fights should they be picking with Republicans, and how should they be making the case that they deserve another chance at leading the country?Sean McElwee is a co-founder and the executive director of Data for Progress, a research organization that gathers polling data to strategize on behalf of progressive causes and policies. Anat Shenker-Osorio is a principal at ASO Communications, a political communications firm that conducts analytic and empirical research to help progressive political campaigns. McElwee and Shenker-Osorio have deeply influenced my thinking on how words work in American politics: how campaigns can meaningfully address what voters want and how they can persuade swing voters and motivate the party's base.In this conversation, McElwee and Shenker-Osorio help me understand where Democrats stand with the electorate and what, if anything, they can do to improve their chances in 2022. We discuss why Biden's approval rating is so low, given the popularity of his policies, why governing parties so often lose midterm elections, whether Democrats should focus more on persuading swing voters or on mobilizing their base, why it's important for Democrats to get their base to sing from the same songbook, what Democrats can learn from Trump about winning voters' attention, how Republicans are running politics on easy mode, whether it was wise politically for Biden to double down on the message to fund the police, what political fights Democrats should pick in the lead-up to the midterms, how the party should handle spiking inflation and more.Mentioned:"Democrats, Here's How to Lose in 2022. There is a new COVID variant and the GOP is trying to exploit it for political gain. Brian interviews White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain about the Build Back Better Act, he rebuts some of the most blatant attacks coming from the right on inflation and gas prices, and he offers his response to Kevin McCarthy after his 8.5 hour speech trying to block one of the most popular pieces of legislation of our lifetimes. And the co-founder & executive director of Data for Progress, Sean McElwee, joins to dive into what the polling says as far as the BBB Act is concerned and whether it shows any upside for moderates like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema when it comes to blocking that legislation.Donate to the "Don't Be A Mitch" fund: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/dontbeamitchShop merch: https://briantylercohen.com/shopYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/briantylercohenTwitter: https://twitter.com/briantylercohenFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/briantylercohenInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/briantylercohenPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/briantylercohenNewsletter: https://www.briantylercohen.com/sign-upWritten by Brian Tyler CohenProduced by Sam GraberRecorded in Los Angeles, CASee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Sam and Emma host Matthew Cortland, Senior Fellow at Data for Progress, to discuss Supplemental Security Income restorative/legislative efforts, and right to repair activist Louis Rossmann to discuss the change in right to repair laws after Biden's competition executive order was signed into law. Sam, Emma, and Matthew cover the structural differences in disability social securities, such as SSI versus SSDI, and the importance of SSI in helping folks without income. They then move onto the crippling drawbacks to SSI, stemming both from the US' cultural aversion to social safety nets and recent targeting from the right, including a maximum monthly supplement at a rate well below the poverty line and absurd qualifications that prevent disabled folks from saving assets for a rainy day or accepting help from friends unless they are willing to sacrifice their social security, before discussing what legislators are working to bolster SSI, and what number to text to push Schumer to include it in reconciliation (SIGN SSI NOW to 50409). Next, Louis Rossmann hops on to chat about the importance of the right to repair, how the issue is wrapped up in monopoly and anti-trust discussions, and what the fight for repair has looked like over the last decade. They cover the importance of the Massachusetts automotive right to repair bill, and the role of federalism in helping achieve targeted advancements in the accessibility of schematics and parts on a greater scale. Sam and Emma also chat Cori Bush success, Nina Turner disappointment, and developments in the new Biden eviction moratorium. And in the fun half Sam and Emma are joined by Sean McElwee, Founding Executive Director of Data for Progress, to discuss the disappointing results for Nina Turner in Ohio's 11th Congressional District primary. Sean and the gang specifically looks into the importance of not giving the democratic establishment material for bad faith attacks that draw away from policy discussion – because the dark money will almost always be there to capitalize on it. Sam and Emma expand the importance of knowing that power will always push back, and emphasize the importance of taking on battles where progress can actually be made, before watching Asa Hutchinson's awkward backtracking on his previous anti-vax mandate legislation, and Ben Shapiro's failure to understand how contagion works. They also chat with Oscar from NoLa on DACA, and another caller takes the wrong route to addressing transphobia and problematic comments from Vaush, plus, your calls and IMs! The Democratic presidential primary is over. Joe Biden is the presumptive nominee heading into the fall. And this week, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren endorsed their former competitor. On the left, the question is: What went wrong? How did Sanders lose to Biden? Why didn’t Warren catch fire? But too few of these postmortems have had sufficient data to build out their theories. And too many of them explain away strategic and tactical failures as media or establishment conspiracies. Sean McElwee has a different perspective. McElwee is the co-founder and executive director of Data for Progress, an organization that utilizes cutting-edge polling and data-analysis techniques to support progressive causes. His aim is to fashion an agenda that is both progressive and popular. But he also sits atop mountains of data that let him test hypotheses with a lot more rigor than most armchair pundits. As a result, McElwee has a fascinating, heterodox view of the 2020 primary, the Sanders and Warren campaigns, and what it will take for progressives to build power. We discuss the critical mistakes both major progressive candidates made, which progressive ideas are most popular with the American people, how the left’s theory of class politics interferes with its most obvious path to electoral victory, why maximalist policy agendas fail even when they look like they’re succeeding, what good (and bad) Overton Window politics look like, how progressives can shape Biden’s presidency, and much, much more. Sean McElwee has one of those jobs you certainly know about, but probably can't pinpoint what it is he does all day. Sean runs a think tank called Data for Progress that he started with Colin McAuliffe. As for what they do as an organization, the name says it all, they collect data to help push liberal political policies and ideas forward. But the way they do it may not be what you expect. Data for Progress is a part of new wave of smaller think tanks running on more of a startup model. Which means a lot of Sean's job is about figuring out ways to affect political change without the resources of much bigger institutions in their field. Learn more about your ad choices. One of the most exciting things that Democratic politics is seeing is happening with Data for Progress. Not only are they showing the way on political issues, they're also raising money to help flip State legislatures from red to blue. Peter Ogburn talks to Sean McElwee, the co-founder.
Data for Progress co-founder Sean McElwee and Washington Post political reporter Dave Weigel came onto the podcast to discuss the Democratic primaries.
Can the Democratic Party keep up with the new left? The left-most wing of the party is growing and expanding, pushing platforms like Medicare for all, free college, and abolishing ICE. Though this group is the minority, the space they’re creating is the space in which the entirety of the party will have to participate in the coming elections. For example, Abolish ICE was first popularized by a twitter hashtag pushed by Sean McElwee. Now, it’s a common campaign issue that the President rails against in his speeches and that any 2020 Democratic hopeful will have to answer to. Sean McElwee pops up again in the primaries, having foreseen two of the biggest Democratic upsets months in advance. As someone at the nexus of the changing winds of the left, McElwee joins us to share his thoughts on what he sees as the way forward for the Democratic Party. If broad government programs are so popular why don’t we just vote them into existence? One of the primary barriers to democratic socialism--or spending in general--is racist media coverage and racist attitudes about how government programs are administered. In this episode we explore how media-fueled racism and means-tested nickel-and-diming makes radical change that much more difficult. With guests Sean McElwee and Noel Cazenave.

Today we travel to a future where America has converted to a direct democracy. Everybody votes on everything! Hey, did you know it was an election year in the United States? I know, you've probably not really heard about this, it's not like it's on the news 24/7. But for all the coverage and the fights you might be getting into on Facebook, tons of people in the United States aren't going to vote in this election. The Pew Research Center has some pretty depressing statistics on just how many Americans go to the polls every year. People in the U.S. don't vote for a lot of reasons. The main one is time. But the second most common answer (16 percent) that Americans give, when asked by the Census Bureau why they don't vote, is that they weren't interested. And eight percent of people said they didn't vote because they didn't like the candidates or the issues. It's no secret that Americans hate their government. In 2015, a Gallup poll estimated that only eight percent of Americans have faith in Congress as an institution. Eight percent! So what if we did things differently? What if we put the vote back to the people, and had Americans actually vote on the issues directly. What if America was a direct democracy? To find out what might happen we talked to Kerri Milita, an assistant professor at Illinois State University who studies direct democracy in America. We also talked to talked to Daniel Castro who's the vice president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation about what an accessible voting app would look like. A few years ago, they looked at accessible voting technology, and found that when you can let people vote on their own apps in their own places that are already safe and customized to them makes a big difference. So let’s say that this all works perfectly. Just go with me to the utopia for a second. Everything works really great, everybody is happy, we’re all securely and safely writing bills and voting on our phones. And because there are no barriers to voting anymore, turnout and participation skyrockets. Now, most people vote! Yay! What does that United States look like when all the people who don't vote today, start voting. To find out, we called Sean McElwee, a policy analyst for an organization called Demos. Sean told us about his research on the differing opinions between voters and non-voters, which you can read here. We also talk about security and voting, and what happens if nobody actually votes because they're overwhelmed. We didn't get to talk about a few things in the show. Like how Sweden uses direct democracy, why Estonia has online voting and we don't, the history of direct democracy, or the proposals to change the forms of democracy we see in the United States. What do you think? Do you vote yes or no on direct democracy? Tell us! Send us a voice memo to info@flashforwardpod.com or call and leave a voicemail at (347) 927-1425. Flash Forward is produced by me, Rose Eveleth, and is part of the Boing Boing podcast family. The intro music is by Asura, the break music is by MC Cullah and the outtro music is by Broke for Free. The episode art is by Matt Lubchansky. Special thanks this week to Dara Lind, who suggested this episode, and Rob Tannen, who provided valuable insight into election app design. If you want to suggest a future we should take on, send us a note on Twitter, Facebook or by email at info@flashforwardpod.com. We love hearing your ideas! Sean McElwee is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is a Research Associate at the Demos think tank. He is also a contributing writer for Salon and Al Jazeera. In this great conversation on The Chauncey DeVega Show, Sean and Chauncey talk about race and wealth inequality, if the United States is still a "democracy", libertarianism, and what the data reveals about how the plutocrats and 1 percent have gamed America's politics to their own advantage. Sean also does some great sharing about the world of think tanks, dealing with trolls, and the challenge of translating complex information so that a smart and interested general readership can process and make use of it. On this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey tells folks about his Thanksgiving dining at a Middle Eastern buffet, gives some love for the new movie Creed, and cuts a promo about loud and obnoxious children who almost ruined his dining experience. Chauncey also talks about Fox News' Megyn Kelly's Jim and Jane Crow lynching culture complaints about black men who "reckless eyeball" America's police, as well as the GOP's proto fascist politics.

In his State of the Union address last month, President Obama called economic inequality the “defining issue of our time.” Indeed, America's middle class is stagnating by many measures, but even the President acknowledges that some of the driving forces – such as globalization – are beyond the government's control. Furthermore, many of these same trends are leading to a decline in global inequality. Nonetheless, Obama is pushing an aggressive agenda for reducing domestic inequality under the banner of so-called “inclusive capitalism.” Part of his proposal is to increase federal spending by more than one trillion dollars over the next ten years, financed by new taxes on the wealthy. Some will see this as the return of “soak the rich,” but others see too much money in the hands of the few as a problem in and of itself. Among the latter group is Sean McElwee, a prolific young journalist and research assistant for Demos, a leading progressive media outlet. In articles for The Atlantic, The New Republic, The Washington Post and Rolling Stone, McElwee has boldly made the case for the progressives' tax-and-spend agenda. He argues that such policies can be effective not only for reducing inequality, but also in boosting U.S. job growth and productivity, and making our democracy more functional. Sean joins Bob to kick off a multiple-part series on a critical question: does inclusive capitalism represent a fix for a broken system or is it merely the same old socialist agenda dressed up in new language?
