In this episode, I speak with Michael Ward about his book, After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis The Abolition of Man.  I think The Abolition of Man is of the most important books in the twentieth century. It addresses important issues that are relevant today — from what it means to be human, reason, passion, and the emotions, to how to think about technology, power, and beauty. It's a short book but can be a bit difficult to understand at times, and Michael Ward does a great service by going through the book line by line and explaining and providing context to make the book easier to follow.  We discuss key themes of The Abolition of Man:  whether beauty and morality are objective or purely subjective education power and authority honor nobility sacrifice for others,  dystopian fiction technology and technocracy  contraception and how man's power over nature ends up being man's power over other men  We also discuss the relationship between the Abolition of Man, Eustace Scrubb, and Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia and the space trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength.   Word on Fire Special Offer: After Humanity + Abolition of Man   Biography  Michael Ward is an English literary critic and theologian. Lewis at Poets' Corner. Michael Ward presented the BBC television documentary, The Narnia Code, directed and produced by BAFTA-winning filmmaker, Norman Stone.  He authored an accompanying book entitled The Narnia Code: C.S. Lewis and the Secret of the Seven Heavens. Michael was resident Warden of The Kilns, Lewis's Oxford home, from 1996 to 1999.  He studied English at Oxford, Theology at Cambridge, and has a Ph.D. in Divinity from St Andrews.  He was Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford (2012-2021).  He has been awarded honorary doctorates in Humane Letters (Hillsdale College, Michigan, 2015) and Sacred Theology (Thorneloe University, Ontario, 2021). “Glory be to the One Who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.” [Quran 17:1] Of the most significant events that occurred in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the Isra’ wa’l Mi‘raj (the Night Journey and Heavenly Ascension). On this night, the Prophet’s heart ﷺ was washed and he traveled to Jerusalem where he led all the Prophets and Messengers in prayer. He then ascended the seven heavens, arrived at the Furthest Lote Tree, and was entered into the Divine Presence where Allah the Exalted honored him and granted his Umma the five daily prayers. It's October of 2020 and this month is the the 70th Anniversary of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe's publication. If there is one person on the planet that I could have on the show to talk about this classic C.S. Lewis story, it is Dr. Michael Ward. Fortunately for you, my dear listeners, he was gracious enough to spend the time celebrating with us this tremendous book. I say this carefully, If you think you know the Narnia series but you are unaware of Michael's work, you don't. His insights will open up a whole new layer of understanding that will enrich your experience and awaken in you the genius of Lewis' "children's stories." Michael Ward is Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at HBU. He is the author of the award-winning Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis (Oxford University Press) and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis (Cambridge University Press).Though based at Blackfriars in Oxford, Dr Ward is also employed as Professor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, Texas, teaching one course per semester as part of the online MA program in Christian Apologetics.On the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis’s death (22 November 2013), Professor Ward unveiled a permanent national memorial to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey.  He is the co-editor of a volume of commemorative essays marking the anniversary, entitled C.S. Lewis at Poets’ Corner (2016). Michael Ward presented the BBC television documentary, The Narnia Code (2009), directed and produced by the BAFTA-winning film-maker, Norman Stone.  He authored an accompanying book entitled The Narnia Code: C.S. Lewis and the Secret of the Seven Heavens (Tyndale House, USA / Paternoster, UK). Michael was resident Warden of The Kilns, Lewis’s Oxford home, from 1996 to 1999.  He studied English at Oxford, Theology at Cambridge, and has a PhD in Divinity from St Andrews.  Further details of his CV are available here.Dr Ward’s chief claim to fame, however, is that he handed a pair of X-ray spectacles to James Bond in the movie The World Is Not Enough. TWENTY SEVEN HEAVENSNeville Goddard 1/12/65 Tonight's subject is something different. If you're not familiar with our terminology I'm going to invite you to listen carefully. It's always on the same theme, really, that God became man that man may become God. In 1803 William Blake wrote a letter to his friend Captain Butts. In this letter he said that he'd just completed the poem Jerusalem, and he said, “I may praise it, because I dare not pretend to be any other than the secretary: the authors are in eternity. And I consider it the grandest poem that this world contains. It's addressed to unborn tomorrow. It's a sublime allegory.” Well, in this poem if you've read it…and may I tell you, do not take any commentaries on it, just read it. If you can't grasp it at first, read it over and over and over again. It's pure vision. He will use certain words that you will think, why did he use a word like this? But eventually they all come to the surface and you understand why he used these words. He wasn't trying to confuse, he was simply writing something that would exercise the mind of man. And in this he makes the statement that “The spiritual states of the soul are all eternal. Distinguish between man and his present state.” He speaks of these eternal states; they're all fixed forever. But man must learn to distinguish between man and his present state. Then he makes the statement, “As the pilgrim passes while the country permanent remains, so men pass on but states remain permanent forever.” So the poor man is only in the state of poverty; the rich man is in the state of wealth; the weak man and the strong man, the man that is known, the man that is unknown, all these are but states. You and I, the man of whom he speaks, could move at any moment in time from any one state into another, and occupying it we fertilize it. We actually by entering a state make it alive, because we are the living presence. As we enter into a state, it's like an egg that we penetrate without breaking its shell—penetrate it, fertilize it, and then if we remain faithful to it, it grows and bears the fruit that it must bear because all things bring forth after their kind. But people now jump from this level to the other level in the same poem. For a long time, most people regarded the Chronicles of Narnia as the charming side project of a Oxford don too busy to double check which mythological creatures belonged in which story. But what if there is a golden string running through each story, so that they hang together like pearls on a necklace… or like planets in the night sky? Dr. Michael Ward solved the mystery. 

As I mentioned several weeks ago on this show, each year, the McGrath Institute for Church Life hosts a lecture series that runs through Lent and Easter, which invites people everywhere to join in a communal reading of a spiritual work for the liturgical seasons. For this year’s series, we are focusing on C. S. Lewis’s beloved children’s stories, The Chronicles of Narnia. I’m so pleased to welcome today one of our lecturers to this series, Rev. Dr. Michael Ward, who is as of last year a Catholic priest and who comes to us from the University of Oxford, where he is senior research fellow in Blackfriars Hall and Associate Member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion. Fr. Ward is the author or editor of several books, including “Heresies and How to Avoid Them”, “The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis”, and “The Narnia Code: C.S. Lewis and the Secret of the Seven Heavens”, which was made into a one-hour documentary by the BBC. But it was of another of his books that Walter Hooper, the esteemed literary adviser to the estate of C.S. Lewis, lauded as unsurpassed in showing a comprehensive knowledge of and depth of insight regarding C.S. Lewis’s works.
