The Naked Pravda
How terrorism's geopolitics brought tragedy to Moscow

The Naked Pravda

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2024 48:11

It's been a little more than a week since a group of armed men walked into a concert hall just outside Moscow and gunned down dozens of defenseless people. A branch of the Islamic State active in South-Central Asia known as Islamic State – Khorasan, or IS-K, claimed responsibility for the Moscow attack in a statement through an affiliated media channel. That same channel later published body-cam footage recorded by the terrorists in the concert hall during the attack. Western intelligence officials say they have corroborated IS-K's responsibility claim. Though IS-K says the concert hall killings are its work, Russian national security officials — including President Putin in several public statements — have argued that Moscow's enemies in Kyiv, Washington, and London are the attack's true masterminds.  The Russian authorities have arrested four Tajikistani nationals they say acted as the gunmen, and several more people are now in custody on suspicion of aiding and abetting the killings. Before the four main suspects were arraigned in court, videos circulated online showing Russian security forces torturing them after their capture. Despite this treatment then and presumably in the days since, so far, only two of the four defendants have pleaded guilty to all charges. To learn more about the perpetrators of this heinous attack, the fluid geopolitics that drives such terrorism, and the road ahead for Russia as the Kremlin tries to utilize the tragedy for its own aims, Meduza spoke to Dr. Jean-François Ratelle, an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa, and Dr. Domitilla Sagramoso, a senior lecturer in conflict and security in the Department of War Studies at King's College London.

We discuss a handful of different legal do's and don'ts in today's episode, sharing the common pitfalls that happen throughout the growth stage and what you can do to prepare yourself for the future. Whether you're in team expansion mode and you are wondering how you should legally classify your team that is helping you expand your business, or curious at what point you should trademark the ideas you have, we touch on so many areas in this episode. From how to manage the legalities behind business partnerships, Instagram giveaways, and the confusion behind the terms, to working with affiliates and how to protect your brand and educate your affiliates on how to use the assets correctly, you'll leave with a notebook full of areas you might need to tidy up in your business. And if you're a team member or looking to work with a brand with high exposure we cover how to protect your brand and previous work inside of your employment contract.  Brittany shares that you should set up your business as if you're building an empire to last (even if this isn't in the roadmap) to ensure you're protected as your brand exposure increases.  Learn more about my guest:Brittany Ratelle is an attorney who helps creators and online business owners become more confident entrepreneurs. 308: Will Ratelle on Explosive Training Specificity, Olympic Lift Debates, and Avoiding Redundant Exercises

Today's episode features Will Ratelle.  Will is a strength coach, at the University of North Dakota, working with football, basketball, volleyball and tennis athletes. He is also the owner of “W2 Performance”.  Prior to working in the performance field, he spent time as a professional football player, spending time with the Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, and Saskatchewan Roughriders (CFL). In the supportive role of physical preparation/S&C, it is very easy to partition the process of weightlifting away from the actual needs and demand of explosive, chaotic sports.  It's also easy to get carried away with excessive auxiliary work, or “atomizing” facets of power work/RFD that don't end up transferring to actual explosive sport skills.  In this sense, it's helpful to personally spend time in sport, in skill acquisition, and in strength development one's self, to intuitively understand the balance, and synergy, between athletic components. Will's athletic background, love for sport and play, and raw “horsepower” is a unique combination.  He was a semi-pro athlete, can clean and jerk 198kg, dunks a basketball with ease, and also loves to play a variety of games and sports.  Will has an analytical process to his performance programming, and asks important questions that have use really dig into the why of what we are doing in the gym (and beyond). On the show today, Will talks about his athletic, game-play and strength background, and how despite being more than physically capable, did not make the pro level of football.  Will then goes into ideas on what we should actually be looking to improve/intensity in the gym setting.  He chats on how to avoid training things that really don't matter in the grand scheme of everything an athlete is asked to do.  Will finishes with his thoughts on the specificity of potentiation, jump and sprint variability training, and then a great take on the “Olympic lifts vs. loaded jumps” debate. When you do get a group of people to go play a game like that, they always say, “we should do this more often”” “I think a lot of times (playing) is going to have a better training effect than going in the gym for an hour” “I didn't have the (tactical) ability that would have been required for me to play at that level… the general perception action abilities were right up there with anybody else, I just didn't have the specific perception action abilities”

Sean Davy sits down with Will Ratelle of University of North Dakota. Will's background is one that's pretty cool. Played on a couple of teams in the NFL's preseason for a few years before playing in the CFL. After his career in the CFL and NFL, Will decided to work at the same school he played for at North Dakota as an S&C. Will can be seen on the explore page moving like a gazelle but being built like he can still go pro in the NFL. His training protocol is one that's pratical and more importantly robust. In athletes now we don't see many that have that imposing physique like the athlete's of before. Will's Hoss Project is one that will allow you to gain size and athleticism. Sean and Will discuss - Training with less volume but more intention - Why people believe training to be bigger can make you slower when it comes down to how did you train that size? Was it by tempo lifts and isolation exercises or was it due to phases of strength and speed blocks. - No such thing as "Power Training" - Your coaches eye should be able to validate your reasoning behind your decision more than any research article. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bxbperformancepod/support

Coach recognizes that there is a certain amount of fluff in the industry, and he understands by taking this fluff out, not only will athletes be able to get bigger and stronger, but they will enjoy the process a bit more. He's one of the leaders of the “new school” approach to training, and he is able to articulate what he agrees with, and what he doesn't. Successive waves of Muslim-origin migrants have fled Russia since the 1990s. While some simply sought a better life, hundreds of thousands left due to conflict or persecution. Jean-François Ratelle, professor at the University of Ottawa, joins Olga and Hugh for an in-depth look at the resulting diaspora across Western Europe, Ukraine and Turkey.Together they unpack Crisis Group's latest findings, from the various obstacles migrants face in transit and their increasingly cold reception in host countries to the way gender norms have evolved once settled. Jean-François explains that by oversimplifying the needs and experiences of such a diverse group, government policy has tended to alienate rather than support Muslims of Russian origin, to everyone's detriment. These unique insights and ongoing research, he hopes, will help temper security concerns by informing a more nuanced approach to integrating these communities in their respective contexts. For more information, browse Crisis Group's Special Coverage page for our developing series on the Russian-origin Muslim diaspora. Dr. Ratelle has been extensively involved in resident education and mentorship from being a chief resident of his residency program to pursuing research in medical education, quality improvement and patient safety, and interprofessional teamwork. He has been recognized for Excellence in Clinical Teaching through many awards including Teacher of the Year in 2019 and the Laureate Award at Mayo. Dr. Ratelle is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. No one wants to be the person in the room that just doesn't “get it”. But, if we're able to embrace our weaknesses—and use feedback as an impetus for growth and change—now we are in the growth mindset. Dr. John Ratelle encourages us to be willing to try, even if we fail. Today, we learn ‘to lean in' and embrace those activities that we shy away from. And have the willingness to be vulnerable and admit our limitations with our mentors. This will set the stage for exponential growth as physicians—and as human beings.   Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Develop a growth mindset. Be open to failure and use it as a stimulus for change. 2. Identify your area of weakness. Ask yourself tough questions “What is the hardest part of my day? What don't I look forward to? And what's my action plan for it?” 3. Be open and honest with your mentors. Know that this is something they will generally appreciate and embrace.

A Different Tweed: Fashion Conversations with Bronwyn Cosgrave

The stylist Sam Ratelle takes a deep dive into his work with Billy Porter, explaining how the black velvet tuxedo dress which Christian Siriano conjured - for the Pose star’s appearance at 2019’s 91st Academy Awards - became the most important outfit that has graced the red carpet in the 21st century. Sam discusses why it is vital to support emerging designers. He also reveals how he broke the news to Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, that Billy Porter would portray a character based on Cleopatra at the 2019 Met Gala. Sam Ratelle’s rise is an inspiring parable for our time. He explains how his fashion journey was often traumatic. It has involved escaping the hold of a religious cult, surviving a hit-and-run accident, experiencing homelessness twice and having to completely start over after the Financial Crisis of 2008. Looking back on his journey, Sam credits the New York LGBTQ shelter, the Ali Forney Center, with helping him get to his best ever place.

In Episode # 31 we look back on the 1972 Stanley Cup finals between the NY Rangers and their hated rivals the Boston Bruins. * First Stanley Cup final's meeting between these two clubs since 1929. * Rangers defeated the defending Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks while the Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blues to reach the Finals * Bruins finished first in the league in points and were led by Superstars Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr and an incredible lineup of tough and skilled players that excelled in penalty killing and the power play. * The Rangers finished with the second most points and were led by Superstar  Brad Park, the GAG line of Hadfield ,Ratelle and Gilbert (although Ratelle sustained a devastating ankle injury earlier in the season and just started playing again in the finals) as well as Star Goaltender Edie Giacomin who was also playing with a knee injury. * The Bruins defeated the Rangers in six games for their second Cup in three seasons. * The Bruins devastated the Rangers while shorthanded scoring  three shorthanded goals in the series ( Derek Sanderson and Eddie Westfall were brilliant). Both teams tallied six power play goals * Bruins Goaltending was the difference in the series as Eddie Johnston was outstanding and Gerry Cheevers (who went undefeated in 33 straight games during the season) pitched a shutout in the Cup clinching game six at MSG. * The Bruins size, strength and physicality especially down low ( where the Bruin forwards always seemed to outnumber the Rangers) caused the Rangers all sorts of problems in the series. Bruins forwards Wayne Cashman and Ken Hodge were particularly dominant.

A nostalgic look back at our favorite Hockey heroes and legends who wore the red, white and blue for the Rangers during the 1960s, 70's and 80's. In this Bonus episode, we look back at Vic Hadfield night at MSG this past Sunday, December 2nd, 2018. During this historic, entertaining and sentimental ceremony the New York Rangers added the former captain and left winger for the famous GAG line to the list of former Rangers greats to have their number retired and lifted to the Garden rafters. The great number 11 has now joined fellow linemates Rod Gilbert, and Jean Ratelle in having his number retired and all three members of the Greatest scoring line in Rangers history will have their uniform numbers hanging side by side atop the rafters at MSG. * Only the 10th Ranger to have his jersey retired joining: #1 Eddie Giacomin #2 Brian Leetch #3 Harry Howell #7 Rod Gilbert #9 Andy Bathgate and Adam Graves #11 Mark Messier and Vic Hadfield #35 Mike Richter * Eloquent and heartfelt speeches by former GAG linemates Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert as well as former Coach and GM Emile Francis. * Former teammates who attended to support and honor Hadfield were Bob Nevin, Eddie Giacomin, Pete Stemkowski, Bruce McGregor, Teddy Irvine, "The Chief" Jim Nielsen, Members of the "BullDog" Line Steve Vickers, Walt Tkaczuk and Bill Fairbairn. As usual, the loudest ovation was for Hall of Famer Brad Park * Also attending was Ron Greshner and other Rangers greats Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Brian Leetch, and Mike Richter. * I would have liked to have seen the ceremony take place during a scheduled game with an original six club such as the Boston Bruins or Chicago BlackHawks. * A briefer Ceremony should have and could have taken place at the scheduled Face-off time so most if not all of the fans would be seated while and bringing energy, enthusiasm, importance and respect to Vic Hadfield and all of the other Ranger greats in attendance on this historic evening in Rangers history. * Fellow teammate and Rangers President Glen Sather along with Current GM Jeff Gorton should also have been at ice level participating in the ceremony. * Finally thus far it has been a Ranger's travesty not to have Hall of Famer Brad Parks number 2 retired at this time. Hopefully, Rangers Management will do the right thing and make this happen in the very near future.

Considered by many as the greatest coach and GM in NY Rangers history.  * Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982  * Recognized for his outstanding accomplishments in building and coaching the NY Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers * Earned the Lester Patrick award in 1982 for his outstanding contributions to Hockey in the United States * Was a star netminder in both Junior and Minor leagues earning All-Star births and MVP awards. *Started his NHL career with the BlackHawks while also playing in parts of four seasons with the Rangers *Was the innovator and inventor of the first Goalie gloves designed after the baseball first baseman's mitt. *Developed leadership skills at a young age and quickly established himself as a successful coach and hockey executive with the Rangers organization starting in 1960. * Coached Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert at Guelph in 1960-61 * Promoted to Assistant GM in 1962 * Promoted to Head Coach and GM in 1965 * Led the Rangers to nine straight years of playoff births from 1966-67 through 1974-75 including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1972. * Coaching record of 388 wins, 273 losses, and 117 ties with the Rangers, Blues, and Whalers. * Built a team that many consider the most elite and consistent Rangers team in the modern era designed around finesse and skill but lacking in physicality. Some say it was the most elite team never to win a Stanley Cup * Built his Rangers clubs around star players Eddy Giacomin, Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert, Vic Hadfield, Brad Park, and Walt Tkaczuk * Was the architect of many controversial trades and transactions both successful and unsuccessful. A few examples : -Park and Ratelle for Esposito and Vadnais -Eddie Giacomini on waivers and picked up by Detroit Vic Hadfield to the Penguins -Moose Dupont, Mike Murphy, Red Berenson to St. Louis - Traded for John Davidson - Traded for Pete Stemkowski, Bruce Mcgregor, Teddy Irvine, and Bobby Rousseau

In this episode of CTStartup, Chris and Andrea speak with Ryan and Sam Ratelle of RRR Creative about the difficulties of starting a new business AND an off-broadway musical. Listen in as Ryan and Sam discuss how creating "Merrilee Mannerly - A Magnificent New Musical" is not all that different from founding any other startup, and how their new business is bringing something unique and authentic to the NYC creative scene.

Vic Hadfield was the first man to score 50 goals in a season for the New York Rangers. Named captain of a team that included the likes of Jean Ratelle, Brad park and Rod Gilbert, some say Hadfield just might have also been the heart and soul of the team. When Hadfield was placed on the No. 1 line to protect Ratelle and Gilbert the Rangers took off, and that line was quickly nicknamed the “GAG Line” as in a goal-a-game … and sometimes the “TAG Line” because it would go on streaks of two-goals-a-game. The author of the book, “We Did Everything But Win,” George Grimm joins host Warren Rogan for a look back at the career of Vic Hadfield. The NFL Draft kicks off tonight and the guys sit down with UND draft hopeful Will Ratelle. They tackle a number of topics, including which teams have shown the most interest, the infamous Wonderlic Test, why his devotion to the Green Bay Packers hangs in the balance, which member of UND’s coaching staff he butted heads with the most, why he felt lost during the football program’s coaching change, and which teammate he owned every day in practice. They even put him on the spot about his better half, UND volleyball stud McKenzie Hart. Also, Joe Black’s co-owner and self-professed local NFL Draft expert Joe Schneider pops in for his first visit to talk about the incredible downtown atmosphere during the Frozen Four. We also learn that Haji is breaking up with his Miami Dolphins. Hint: it’s not them, it’s him (okay, it’s them).
