This week, Kate talks about the Freeman family who came from Leeds, England to the Haliburton area. They brought with them little social graces that brought a taste of home for the pioneer family. Plus, Paul tells the story of how cynical eugenics started to promote birth control in Canada in the early 1900's. On the other hand was Dorothea Palmer. She was an altruistic social worker who was counselling poor women with large families on birth control but was charged with distributing birth control information contrary to the Criminal Code. She was caught in the middle between the eugenics movement trying to manipulate the system, and providing birth control information for educational reasons. Regardless, she was commited for trial and was potentially facing 2 years in jail. Kate Butler is the Director of the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Paul Vorvis is the host of the Your Haliburton Morning Show 7 - 9 a.m. Fridays on Canoe FM 100.9 and streaming on your devices. Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)

As we are in the midst of summer travels, I want to remind you -and gently point out a few ideas on how to behave…. better. Traveling to friends' houses, having guests over, and even going on vacation together to a summer place requires thoughtfulness and a huge dose of patience. And a bit of savoir-faire to avoid misinterpretations and generally get along. The aim is to have a great time, avoid drama, and…. be able to do it again next year. What to do as a live-in guest:* Bring a present. It doesn't have to be a case of Moet Chandon nor a basket from Fortum's, even though either would be greatly appreciated- it can be a new coffee table book, a collection of jams and marmalades, or even the ingredients for one meal… like breakfast. It is not about the expense but about the thoughtfulness behind the gift. * Pack a nightgown and a dressing gown. You may sleep au naturel and have breakfast in your undies, but this is not a great look in front of your host's husband or children. * Keep your things in your room. Your purse, your bag, your wet towel, your hat. It is not your house to spread out as you like. (this will also make it easier to pack when you leave!) * Be helpful: offer to get groceries, help with the dishes, set the table, offer to walk the dog…. you know what I mean.* If there is help in the house, leave a tip. It will be greatly appreciated by the host and by the person receiving it. * Tell your host your travel plans—time of arrival and departure. What to do as a host:* Besides preparing the guest room with clean sheets, new soaps, and hairdryers, make sure the lamps work, and the curtains cover the windows. A fresh bouquet of flowers is a must. * A guest room is not a hotel; your friends should know to bring their own toiletries. Having said this, a small basket with bath oil, scented sachets, and closet liners makes your guests feel cared for. * Tell your friends in advance of any events during their stay… so they can bring appropriate clothing. And yes, they have to be included in whatever you are doing. No, you can't leave them behind while you go to a fancy party. * As much as it is your-house-your-rules, be considerate of your guest and their morning routine. Some people take a little longer to get going in the morning, and some others are up at dawn. Set some basic routines; it is always a good idea. * Do something special for your guests… breakfast in bed, organize an outing somewhere, invite a group for drinks… any small gesture that you know will make your friend's stay at your house so much more memorable. At the end of it all, it is all about deepening relationships and friendships. Be kind and thoughtful; if things go wrong, which they sometimes do, stay in your room and read a book. The drama will pass…. With this, I leave you. Sincerely, The Serial Hostess Diary of a Serial Hostess is a reader-supported publication. On today's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast we talk to an old friend about a new book; two-time past guest Amy Touchette joins us to discuss her book of street portraits. She also brought a friend with her - none other than photographer, Larry Fink. Is it fair to call Fink a photo legend?  We think so, and clearly the people at the Center for Creative Photography seem to think so, because they just acquired his complete archive of work including images from the 1950's to the present, from his acclaimed series “The Beats”, “Social Graces”, “The Vanities” and others.   While this is a roundtable conversation, we start with a few questions about Touchette's book “Personal Ties: Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn”, which she shot over the course of summer strolls through her New York neighborhood. We learn why she started photography in 2001, about her working process with a Rolleiflex twin lens reflex film camera, and why her personal interaction with her subjects/collaborators is paramount in her photography practice. We also talk about crowdsourcing, editorial collaboration, and why Fink wrote the foreword for Touchette's book.   Larry Fink's sixty years of photography work is well-recognized, but his harmonica playing, less so.  We hope to remedy that with this episode, but while at it, we learn how he created an extensive archive of vintage prints and “hustled” to find a home for his life's work. We learn of his Mamiya medium format camera with bellows, his preferred photo paper, and mull on the difference between our two guest's aesthetic style. We also talk about an insider vs. outsider perspective, about the nature of portraiture, and the “revelatory excitement that defies the logic of what a frame could be”.    Join us for this playful yet insightful conversation and have a look at this link for portraiture and WPPI related specials.   Guests: Amy Touchette and Larry Fink Photograph © Amy Touchette For more information on our guests or the gear discussed in this show, please visit https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts

Teaching manners and social graces is about so much more than pleases and thank-yous; it's years of modeling and coaching with many shades of gray that bring together regional and cultural differences and expectations, and with a line of sight toward courtesy that's much bigger than any one dinner party or social faux-pas. Join Meagan and Sarah as we confess the manners our kids are still struggling with, celebrate the areas where things are working well in our families, and take a big picture look at raising courteous humans. On today’s podcast we delve into the deep abyss of social graces, manners, and teaching them to our children.  When prepping to talk about this subject, we realized that the list is never ending, and that the task of teaching  all of them to our kids is going to be a long, constant journey!   If you have managed to instill all these manners in your children, we bow down to you. Also, we realize that the spectrum of behavior that comes naturally to children is enormous, and while some kids are constantly using perfect manners without being prompted, it in no way means that we aren’t doing an amazing job as a mom if our kids refuse or forget to use manners.  We are all doing our best…and did we mention that the list is sooooooo long!? We hope you will listen and laugh with us as we discuss times we’ve been really proud and times we’ve been really embarrassed by our kid’s manners, and how observing other children who are not using good manners (TOTALLY NORMAL) has us keeping a running list of things we want to make sure our children know that they are absolutely not allowed to do.  (Which basically guarantees they will eventually do it.) Join in the conversation on Instagram @regularcoolmom or in our Facebook Group: Regular Cool Mom.  We love hearing from you. Also, please rate and review the podcast and tell a friend.  We REALLY appreciate it when you share! Thanks for listening.
