Often considered part of a loose thematic series called "Heaven and Earth" the games deal a with a lot of similar ideas of creation and destruction, usually with some great tunes to go along with them. Some more pedantic people will say Granstream Saga doesn't count, and maybe it doesn't, but I don't see the game ever coming up in our regular rotation so why not talk about it here? Anyway, enjoy! Welcome to 2024! This year at Random Encounter, we're on the road to episode 300, so let's start the new year right by chatting about some games!First up, Jerry is here to talk about the experimental visual novel, Slay the Princess. In complete opposition to just about every video game plot ever, here you need to kill the princess or the world is doomed! Or is it? With a ton of endings and twists around every choice, Slay the Princess has captured Jerry's attention as a potentially overlooked gem of 2023.And speaking of overlooked gems, Aleks has another one for you from 1999 with Planet Laika, a Japanese-only game from Quintet, the developer of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. This lost 32-bit-era adventure/RPG hybrid features a highly experimental narrative, mind-bending graphics, and a philosophical bent that would have sent any translator in the late 1990s into a stress-related leave (which might be why it was never localized). Thankfully, Planet Laika now has a high-quality fan translation! So, let's find out what we missed out on!Featuring: Jono Logan, Aleks Franiczek, and Jerry Williams; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Slay the Princess ReviewPlanet Laika Review

Hey everyone! Apologies if this episode sounds out of date, that's because it is! We recorded this one a while ahead of release because Bally was getting married. However we still got plenty of games to talk about, including Pokemon Legends Arceus and the new footage shown in a recent Pokemon Presents showcase - it's definitely growing on us. Nbz meanwhile has been puzzling around in Lego Builders Journey, a branded game with a heart of gold, while Bally has played through the short but sweet adventure Florence on Switch. Nbz has also been taking an RPG history lesson with Soul Blazer, an oft forgotten game from Quintet, the creators of Act Raiser, and begins his journey in playing all three games in the "Quintet Trilogy." After the break we take some of your emails about how our thoughts have evolved on games since we played them and what are the best video game romantic match ups that we can concoct. Can you call something a mini-episode when it's still 45 minutes long? I dunno, but that's what we're calling this anyway because we're not ranking any new games. Instead, we're re-ranking some games based on suggestions from our guests on the Holiday episode. Derek felt that Mario Kart should be higher than Top Gear and Kamijace felt that Soul Blazer should be higher than Final Fantasy II. Upon repeat playing, will SteampunkLink and Emmy Zero agree? And Trevor feels that both Axelay and Final Fight are too low on the list. Will one or both of them get a bump in the standings? Big thanks again to Derek of Rolling Misadventures, Kamijace of the Weekly Cooldown, and Trevor of Catching up on Cinema for their suggestions. If you want to make suggestions about changes to our list as well, you can reach SteampunkLink on Twitter @snescapades. Finally, one more big thanks to our guests from the Holiday Episode.

Soul Blazer is a story about a soul blazer named Blazer who, at the command of the celestial being called The Master, is sent to the empty kingdom of Freil to revive the world.  Some time ago, a king consumed with greed brought about the ruin of his empire, selling every soul in the land to the king of evil, Deathtoll. In this episode, Blazer begins his adventure in Grass Valley, a lush hidden paradise atop a tall mesa overlooking the entire Freil kingdom.  As he battles his way through the tainted underground labyrinth, he releases the souls of the village's population, including farmers, goats, flowers and even a chair.  Here he learns about the scientist who was party to the world's ruin, and gains insight as to where he must travel to triumph over the evil forces. We do a lot of introduction in this episode; jump ahead about seven minutes if you just want to get into the soul blazing.  Tell your friends about our podcast! When The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast isn’t unloading on the latest geek news and happenings, we’re diving deep into super-specific discussions and interviews. This episode spotlights one of the greatest video games you've never heard of: Terranigma. Those who know it, regard it as among the greatest RPGs of the Super Nintendo era, if not of all-time. This is no mere tale of sword and sorcery, Terranigma taps into the duality of life and the contradictory nature of the human existence. It's the story of Ark, a reckless young man from outside time, who's charged with resurrecting Earth and human culture from global extinction. The game is heavy stuff, and it's not alone. Terranigma is one in a series of thematically-linked titles made by the studio Quintet, along with likewise revered games: Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Act Raiser, and Granstream Saga. In this extra-length Microsode we discuss them all, but to do so we need some help... Cap and Brandon are joined by Lauren the Flute of VGM band, The Returners and Adil Mohyuddin of Fangamer to expand on the complexities of one of our favorite games. Whether you're a long-time fan, or this is the first you're hearing of the game, this is a journey through a classic you won't soon forget. And if you enjoy this episode, be sure to come out to Camp Fangamer in Tucson, AZ July 29-31 where Cap, Lauren, and Adil are expanding this discussion into a panel! Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross release an episode about Soul Blazer. We don’t really have good luck with action RPGs. While Soul Blazer is plenty charming, it’s definitely an early, simplistic take on the genre. Deathtoll has captured all living things, and it’s up to you to save them… but heroism is pretty repetitive. Everyone is CAH-RAZY over those zany robots! Because we just weren’t done talking about hot chicks blowing up robots, we decided to continue forth with our opinions on Mamoru Oshii’s movie adaptaion of the Masamune Shirow classic, Ghost in the Shell! Spoiler: We lied! The movie is _actually _about basset hounds. OSMnotes One of the pluses on reviewing a hallmark of Japanese animation, especially as one so uh, _digital _as Ghost in the Shell, is that you can find the DVD for it pretty cheap. I mean, like $12.04 and $12.14 with free shipping cheap. Or if you have a really banging 6.1, 7.1, or Whatever is the Lastest Greater than 5.1 Surround Sound System then I suppose you could pony up the extra 10-20 bucks to grab the special edition that’s floating around. Of course, chances are that if you an afford such a sound system, you can afford the extra money for the DVD. Apperently "tensai" means "genius." ... Yeah. Ol’ Robert Pelloni (aka Bob) is still hard at work living locked up in his room as protest to Nintendo for not getting to him the tools he needs to move his project (the eventually DS game “Bob’s Game”) into the realm of retailability. Good luck Bob! After I’ve started playing Chrono Trigger on the DS, I’ve realized I need more RPGs that look and play like they should on the SNES in my life. And yours looks like an SNES-era Enix knockoff, so I have hope! Robotrek is awesome and Bob should be inspiried to even greater... greatness by these pixels. I know I am. I’m serious here, unheard of Enix games like Soul Blazer and Robotrek are the best. Okay, so most all the Quintet-developed games pre-Grandstream Saga are_ the best_, but still! I loved those games and your (Bob’s) game reminds me off them. I only worry that much like many other projects that started with much fanfare and the devleoper shooting his mouth off on how the great his game is only for the games to crash and burn, yours will not stand the test of time. I hope you can prove my worries are for naught! As long as, you know… Nintendo calls you back and stuff.
