Federico Malek On Selling An E-Commerce Company To Groupon And Now Building A $100 Million Revenue Brand In LatAm

Federico Malek, a seasoned entrepreneur from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has navigated the complex waters of startups and acquisitions, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the business world. His journey, marked by strategic decisions and keen insights into the dynamics of emerging markets, offers a wealth of knowledge for aspiring entrepreneurs. Federico's latest venture, Wonder Brands has attracted funding from top-tier investors like Alarko Ventures, Kube VC, Mountain Partners, and Spectra Investments. In this episode, you will learn: Building startups in emerging markets like Argentina requires strong unit economics and sustainability from day one due to macro and political fluctuations. Early exposure to successful entrepreneurs inspired Malek to pursue entrepreneurship in Argentina's burgeoning tech scene. The high-growth, high-burn model is less suitable for emerging markets, where stable capital markets are scarce. After selling his first company to Groupon, Malek shifted to developing sustainable, profitable business models. Wonder Brands focuses on creating consumer discretionary brands for Latin America's rising middle class, emphasizing sustainable and profitable growth. Raising capital in Latin America is more challenging and time-consuming compared to more mature markets like the US and Europe. Aspiring entrepreneurs should carefully choose their market, considering both potential and challenges, rather than being attached to their home country.   SUBSCRIBE ON: iTunesGoogle PlayStitcherTuneInRSSSoundCloudSpotify For a winning deck, see the commentary on a pitch deck from an Uber competitor that has raised over $400M (see it here).  *FREE DOWNLOAD* The Ultimate Guide To Pitch Decks .mailchimp-form { background: #ff931f; padding: 0; width: 100%; display: inline-block; margin-bottom: 30px; } .mailchimp-form .img-block { width: 50%; float: left; } .mailchimp-form .content-block { float: left; width: 50%; padding-left: 10px; margin-left: -60px; padding-top: 46px; } .mailchimp-form .content-block h3 { color: #fff; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", sans-serif; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; font-size: 42px; text-align: left; border-width: 0; border-color: #fff; border-style: solid; border-radius: 0; line-height: 1.8; box-shadow: transparent 0 0 0, transparent 0 0 0 inset; text-shadow: transparent 0 0 0; padding: 0; margin: 0; letter-spacing: normal; } .mailchimp-form .content-block h4 { color: #000; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); font-family: Montserrat, sans-serif; font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; font-size: 42px; text-align: left; border-width: 0; border-color: #000; border-style: solid; border-radius: 0; line-height: 1.5; box-shadow: transparent 0 0 0, transparent 0 0 0 inset; text-shadow: transparent 0 0 0; padding: 0; margin: 0; letter-spacing: normal; } .mailchimp-form input.email { width: 100%; height: 50px; padding: 0px 20px; border: 1px solid #333; margin-bottom: 15px; } input#mc-embedded-subscribe { color: rgb(255, 255, 255) !important; background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Montserrat", sans-serif; font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; /* font-size: 25px !important; */ line-height: 1.5; text-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0) 0px 0px 0px; padding: 10px 0px; margin: 0px; display: block; width: 100%; height: 100%; box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0) 0px 0px 0px inset; cursor: pointer; border: 1px solid rgb(0, 0, 0) !important;

Creators of ‘Brown Girls’ On A New Era Of Representation

Morning Shift Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2019 14:15

After the success of the Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls, Fatimah Asghar and Sam Bailey return to Chicago for the world premiere of another collaboration: Damaged Goods.The two were executive producers for the new web series, which follows the lives of four young adults of color grappling with the loss of their identity while living in Chicago. The show was written by Vincent Martell, Zac Payne and KB Woodson. Damaged Goods is part of new cycle of pilots and series presented by Open Television, a Chicago-based web platform for local artists. Asghar and Bailey join Morning Shift to talk about their experience working on the new show, their latest projects in Chicago and LA, and the importance of representation and intersectionality in media and the arts.What kind of show is Damaged Goods and what was it like producing it?Sam Bailey: It’s really just kind of this like love letter to black and brown queer communities in Chicago, and it’s a community that we feel really attached to and are a part of and active in. So they made a show that kind of explores all of these different relationships and friendships and chosen family between these four roommates. And we got brought onto it early last year as creative EPs to help guide them as they were going through the web series process.On the importance of authentic, intersectional storytellingFatimah Asghar: I think it’s really important for people of color to just have really nuanced humanities, and I think that’s something that Vince and Zac and KB really, really wanted to do — to show the struggles that exist in our communities in a very real way ... the writers wanted to convey a sense of realness and the authenticity when it came to these characters, which means not shying away from some of these darker topics.Odette Yousef: These shows touch on intersectionality of multiple identities, as did Brown Girls … but in such an edgy and raw kind of way. What’s your take on why that’s the right approach?Bailey: I don’t know if there’s a right or wrong approach, I just think it’s true to our aesthetics … we want to do something that feels very real but also has a bit of surrealism and play, because we’re still experimenting as artists. So not only are we telling this story about a bunch of these different identities, but I also want to give these creators room to play in their filmmaking. So I think that’s the reason why it’s raw and edgy, because it is 100 percent them … and if you stay true to it, there’s a level of authenticity that can’t be matched in Hollywood.Breaking boundaries, reaching audiences through web seriesAsghar: I think that the idea of a web series and the digital platform offered a sense of freedom. It was a way in which we didn’t have to ask permission for the stories we were telling … and really, it was because there was no other way. It was like we wanted to make content, we wanted to connect with our audiences, we wanted to get that out here.And when we made Brown Girls, there was no kind of concept of we are making this in the hopes that Hollywood see it. We were making it in the hopes that our communities would see it. And so, I think that the priority has just been different. It’s not been a thing of like, we’re using the digital space to get into Hollywood. It’s been, we’re using the digital space to be its own platform and its own sense of authorship and ownership. On their latest works in Chicago and LABailey: Fati has another book out, Halal If You Hear Me, which I love. And I think we're trying to figure out the balance between being in LA and and being in Chicago and creating more 'mainstream' work and creating our independent work, which is very difficult. But it seems like every time I do, I lean more into the independent stuff ... so, I think there's a lot of projects in the making right now and hopefully we'll be able to share that with you guys real soon. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity by Stephanie Kim. Nutrition Advice on Hydration Performs Simone Biles-worthy Back-Flip, U-turn, Reversal

We've all been told that to keep hydrated, the best drink is always water, and we should consume at least 64 ounces per day. Conversely, to keep from dehydrating, the standard advice is to avoid caffeinated beverages because they're diuretics that cause you to lose water.Ditto for alcohol.Unfortunately, most of the things we think we thought we knew about healthful hydration no longer seem to be certain.For example, the advice to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day turned out to have very little evidence supporting it. The idea that coffee and other caffeinated beverages dehydrate you also seems to be incorrect, given the conclusions of this meta-analysis that any concerns "regarding unwanted fluid loss associated with caffeine consumption are unwarranted."So what should you really be drinking to stay hydrated?The best drinks to keep you hydrated:Given this confusion, a recent study by researchers at the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University in the UK is very important. They did a straightforward study by creating a "hydration index." In other words, they measured many drinks to show how well your body is hydrated by each of them.Their test drinks included still and sparkling water, soda (Coke and Diet Coke), sports drink (Powerade), Orange Juice, lager beer, black coffee, black tea (hot and cold), milk (skim and normal), and an oral rehydration drink designed for children with prolonged diarrhea.It's important to note that the study was partly funded by the European Hydration Institute, which is funded by Coca-Cola (hence the study's choice of test sodas and sports drink). But if the soda giant was looking to juice a study to get some kind of marketing boost, the results didn't fall their way. In fact, the researchers found that the best drinks for hydration were actually milk (both versions) and the oral rehydration drink.Their sports drink, which is manufactured and marketed specifically for rehydration, was actually worse than water for this purpose. In this case, the source of funding was inversely associated with a positive outcome.Other interesting findings were that the drinks normally thought to be diuretics (in other words, drinks that would make you urinate more, losing more water) did not have that effect. Alcohol and caffeine have typically been viewed as diuretics, but the lager beer, despite its alcohol, was not a net diuretic. Neither was caffeinated coffee or tea.What explains these findings?Alcohol and caffeine have been found to be diuretics in prior studies. But in this one, the lack of diuresis may come down to the simple, common-sense rule that is applied to almost everything: A little may be good, but a lot is not.The authors point out that the acute doses of caffeine are unlikely to have a diuretic effect until they exceed ~300 mg. In their study, the amount of caffeine given to the subjects ranged between 96 and 212 mg.As for alcohol, this study has subjects drink 2 pints of 4 percent alcohol lager, which did not increase urine output compared to the other drinks. In other words, the water in the beer was offset by any diuretic effect of the alcohol. This was also true for athletes who had a beer after training. But as in the case of caffeinated beverages, as the alcohol concentration increased above 4 percent, the diuretic effect increased as well.Surprisingly, milk was more likely to sustain hydration than any other drink—and this wasn't the first study to show this. The authors point out that this may be because of the higher energy content in the drink. Any food or drink containing fat, fiber, or protein will slow the rate that the stomach empties into the small intestine, effectively slowing the rate of absorption.The authors' suggestion that milk proteins may contribute to the reduced diuretic effect is also supported by other research concluding that "milk protein has been shown to be more effective for post-exercise rehydration than an isoenergetic amount of carbohydrate."The bottom line:Even though this is a small study of 72 subjects assessing a small number of drinks—and it definitely needs to be replicated—it's a really clarifying start to create an index for hydration. This opens the door to follow-up research that can do at least two things:Study more kinds of drinks so consumers can get a better picture of those drinks that help hydration and those that don't.Study different concentrations of alcoholic and caffeinated drinks to show the inflection point where they turn from hydrating to dehydrating.In the meantime, while we're waiting on new studies, at least we know this: Milk seems to be the most hydrating drink of the current hydration index, and beer and coffee probably aren't dehydrating until you overconsume them.Follow @willclower!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");For more information: Click here to visit Will Clower's website.

Sometimes it pays to look back through our Black Sweater White Cat playlists, when we hosted a two or three hour Creative Commons only show on WBCR-LP in Great Barrington Massachusetts. One of these look-backs brought me to Beth Quist, who is credited as the reason that Magnatune was started."It was Beth Quist who inspired me to create Magnatune... John Buckman - MagnatuneYou can read more on her Magnatune bio page, and you can listen to her music and buy any of her four albums. Beth was Magnatune's best seller for three years. This is not a huge surprise, her voice is pretty damn amazing.In BSWC history, we played a number of her songs in 2005 and 2006. This song, Monsters, was not on any of those playlists, so it makes its debut today, 12 years after being released. It is the third track on her album Silver. I hope you enjoy!Beth Quist - Monsters
