Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #228 Broadcast date: 9 April 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guest: Dr Stephen Morse, ESG Strategist & Founder Unchained & Serena Stewart Head of Strategic Partnerships, Business/Law School at UTS If you asked a small business owner if they had processes which showed consideration, fairness and equality when hiring new staff, that they were making considerable effort to reduce their impact on the environment and be more sustainable, and had all their paperwork up to date with ASIC; the vast majority would say yes, they were working on all of that or had it nailed. But if you said to the same small business person: Are you meeting your ESG reporting requirements they would probably look at you quick blankly and ask what that stands for. Yet another reporting requirement, is what it stands for. Something small businesses are not ready for, is what it stands for. But what it IS, is the reality coming down the pipeline. Yet many small businesses owners are unaware of the impact of ESG reporting requirements, what and when they need to take action and how it will change their business significantly if they're not ready. Luckily, we've got Dr Stephen Morse on the Small Biz Matters again. You'll remember him from a few years ago when he came onto our radio show to talk about another set of requirements : Anti-Slavery reporting requirements. He's joining us once again to support small businesses to understand what they need to do and where to get help. Plus, Serena Stewart from UTS will be jumping in to tell us all about the ESG survey they are developing and they're asking for your help to make policy better! PEOPLE –  Tell us about your journey and how you became so passionate about helping small businesses to navigate regulation like ESG and anti-slavery requirements. What sort of small business people are the most vulnerable if they don't start planning out how ESG will affect their business? Are you concerned that small businesses will be left with another overly-onerous reporting regime they don't understand? What is working elsewhere in the world? POLICY - Is the solution for ESG additional regulation really just reg-tech or do you think the Government needs to consider small businesses at the co-design phase? Which is more efficient: Should we be designing ESG reporting methods around different segments of small businesses or allow big business to dictate what they need to see from their supply chain PURPOSE -  What exactly is ESG and why do small business people need to be aware of it and starting to plan NOW for the changes coming? Where is a good place to start? Will it be mandatory? How can we make it as easy as possible for small businesses to report and what do you think the Government needs to do now in its policy settings to support the transition? Dr Stephen Morse is CEO of Unchained Solutions Pty Ltd, a Sydney-based facilitation and advisory firm that enables organisations to make a meaningful contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and improve their ESG reporting and CSR commitments. Unchained's solutions are designed to help local and global teams to thrive. Stephen has over 25 years' experience in entrepreneurial leadership in the not-for-profit and private sectors, both in Australia and overseas. Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 18 February 2020 Did you know in 2018 the Modern Slavery Act came into affect for all businesses over $100M profit? It means they must report on the people and materials in their supply chains to prove they are not involved in what’s termed modern slavery. Whether it be working conditions, where your raw materials come from, or worse, it’s not something any business needs on their record. So, it may not relevant to us now but we in small business know it won’t be long before this piece of legislation is coming for us too. But what if I told you that you can opt in? Having this tick of approval might help you get that lucrative corporate or govt contract. Or really prove you’re as socially conscious as you claim. So understanding and mitigating the risks in your supply chain is ethically important. So what is the 2018 Modern Slavery Act, the process for reporting and how is it now and into the future going to affect small businesses in Australia? Stephen and Sarah Morse already have decades of experience in this industry, some not so positive but are putting all of this into supporting businesses to understand the Act, be compliant and decrease their exposure to the Modern Slavery trade. Welcome to the show Stephen & Sarah. Topics we’ll be covering: What is the act and how does it affect small business in terms of compliance? Tendering process is where the majority of transparency needs to be shown Mandatories - affects $100 gross profit, dept home affairs administrators, approx 3000 entities at moment but likely to expand These entities (or those who wish to opt in) have to report every year. Guidelines include 7 steps, how have you investigated and consulted to mediate the risk, what KPIs are you putting in place. Reasonable steps are the expectation. The trickle down affect will mean all suppliers (inc small business) need to demonstrate compliance (opt-in) to maintain and tender. transparency (explore their supply chain risk and exposure Why is it beneficial for a small business to opt in (see it as an opportunity, remain competitive, tenders for govt and corporate & consumer pressures) What could you do to show leadership & how is this helping globally Attracting new talent, making it part of your DNA, KPIs Engaging with NGOs who are working in this space - examples, share value partnerships, the 1% theory It’s not just about compliance Broadly your small business journey and what led you to start this business and why you’re passionate about supporting small business Healthcare & Humanitarian backgrounds, Christian mission support Own faith convictions around poverty, justice & investigations in Spain & Europe free movements into different areas, porous borders, geopolitical factors, Taught English to business Completed a PHD examining socioeconomic factors of people trafficking Upon return to Aust we were going to return to Aust, but the campaign fell apart due to family circumstances Clean start, but keeping in touch with networks for modern slavery Talk to the legislation - how did it come about and who did they consult with? Since the age of 17, when she visited Africa for the first time, Sarah has learned life's richest lessons from some of the world's poorest people. She is passionate about combatting modern slavery, having worked with survivors of human trafficking in Spain. Dr Stephen Morse, Founder and CEO With over twenty-five years' global leadership experience, Stephen brings an engaging and refreshing perspective to fight against modern slavery. Known for his depth of insight, unique perspective and engaging presence, Stephen draws upon lessons learnt from his practical experience as a leader, and also his work in academic research on the socio-economic dynamics that undergird modern slavery. He also uses his cross-cultural leadership experience to help develop critical skills in a global marketplace. Unchained Business Services Unchained was founded by Stephen and Sarah in 2018. They inspire Australian companies to leaders in combatting modern slavery through their keynotes and masterclasses, and through the Readiness Framework, where they help companies to implement the Modern Slavery Act. What is the insanity defense? How is it used and when? And, does the Constitution permit a state to abolish it?   Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Professor Stephen Morse, of Penn’s Carey Law School, to discuss the insanity defense. The Ferdinand Wakeman Hubbell Professor of Law, a Professor of Psychology and Law in Psychiatry, and the Associate Director of the Center for Neuroscience and Society at Penn, Professor Morse is one of the country’s leading experts on today’s topic, having recently co-authored an amicus brief for the United States Supreme Court in the case, Kahler v. Kansas. Today, Aaron and Stephen talk about this brief and more as they contemplate one of our country’s oldest legal quandaries.    In this episode, Stephen and Aaron aim to answer some of the most challenging questions surrounding the insanity defense. What is it really? And, what are the conditions? The two examine the question of intent and competency, the notion of right and wrong, as well as how we view crime as a society and subsequently, how we view punishment and its purposes. Professor Morse debunks some of the myths of what it means to be criminally insane and Aaron asks about the misunderstandings of the so-called “twinkie defense.” Stephen and Aaron talk about the recent wave of mass shootings in our country, the historic examples of the insanity defense, such as the cases of Andrea Yates and Daniel M’Naghten, and whether or not states can or should move to outlaw insanity as a legal defense.  Professor Morse clearly states the case for not abolishing the insanity defense.   Professor Morse obtained his JD from Harvard, as well as his PhD in Personality and Developmental Studies. He works on problems of individual responsibility and agency, specializing in criminal law and mental health law. Stephen has published numerous interdisciplinary articles and chapters and has co-edited collections including A Primer on Criminal Law and Neuroscience and Foundations of Criminal Law. He was a contributing author to Crime and Culpability: A Theory of Criminal Law and is working on a new book entitled, Desert and Disease: Responsibility and Social Control. He teaches courses in Criminal Law, Mental Health Law, Freedom and Responsibility, and Perspectives on Cognitive Neuroscience.   Professor Morse is a Diplomate in Forensic Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology; a recipient of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology’s Distinguished Contribution Award and a member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mental Health and Law. He is also a trustee of the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law.     To learn more about Professor Stephen Morse, please visit his Bio page on Penn’s website here. He has worked in the Museum Services Division at Ellis Island for more than a decade. He is the author of several books, including , (including Bob Hope, Bela Lugosi, and Max Factor) and (which includes information on displaced persons).      Ellis Island: Historical highlights Prior to 1890, immigration was handled by the states (primarily New York, as most passed through the Port of New York). 1920-1921: New regulations cut down immigration dramatically. Each country had quotas that could not be exceeded. New regulations were passed requiring immigrants to have a passport from their home country have medical examinations pay a tax to the American Consulate in their home country.  During the last 30 years, Ellis Island mostly handled immigrants who were "in trouble." Starting in the 1930s some immigrants arrived by air (Colonial Airways from Canada). After WWII, Air France started service, and German and Italian airlines came in the 1950s.  Ellis Island was closed in 1954 by President Eisenhower. Immigrants who were still detained when it closed were sent to jails. After 1954, Ellis Island was still used by the Coast Guard for training and by the Public Health Services department.  Barry's research on workers at Ellis Island: Most employees were men. Interestingly, blue collar men tended to die before age 60, and better educated ones lived much longer.  Female employees were typically widows, unmarried or had husbands who did not support them. "Char woman" was a common role held by Irish, Swedish and German women. Char means "chores" (cleaning women). They worked often for about $400/ year with no pension, and lived to old ages. A nursery was opened at Ellis Island; many Christian missionaries worked there. Ludmila Foxlee (1885-1971) was one of them, a social worker with the YWCA. to read more immigrant aid workers at Ellis Island. Three more great resources for discovering the stories of your immigrant ancestors: Read this article and watch (for free) an award-winning, official documentary) If your search at doesn't retrieve your ancestors, head on over to . There you will find dozens of links to search resources, including the Ellis Island Gold Form for arrivals between 1892 and 1924.  Even the folks at Ellis Island refer researchers to Morse's site. Listen to Lisa's interview with Stephen Morse in In Lias's free (episodes 29-31), genealogist Steve Danko covers immigration and naturalization records in depth and even offers up some little-known tips about deciphering some of the cryptic notes researchers often find on passenger lists.   PROFILE AMERICA:   PRODUCTION CREDITS Lisa Louise Cooke, Host and Producer Sunny Morton, Editor Diahan Southard, Contributor: Your DNA Guide Melissa Barker, Contributor: The Archive Lady Michael Strauss, Contributor: Military Minutes Hannah Fullerton, Production Assistant Lacey Cooke, Service Manager Disclosure: This page contains affiliate links and Genealogy Gems will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on these links (at no additional cost to you).
