The Metaverse has taken the world by storm in 2021 and even though many have and are still opposing it, the fact that we are spending the majority of our lives online is an undeniable truth. The boundaries between physical and digital worlds are slowly eroding away. Our digital presence generates a data footprint that is currently being stored in big tech's centralized silos. As a whole, these user-generated data breadcrumbs represent our digital identity. Web3 has, so far, mainly focused on financial aspects, disregarding user specific data even though the latter actually represents the vast majority (>90%) of all generated data.We were joined by Joel Thorstensson, co-founder of 3Box Labs, to discuss Ceramic's goal of decentralizing ‘social', account-based data in the form of user-generated event streams, that could unlock true application interoperability built on a composable data layer.Topics covered in this episode:Joel's background & founding CeramicThe concept behind CeramicCeramic's event stream design vs. other data solutionsThe need for consensus in CeramicUse cases for CeramicData privacy potentialApplication interoperabilityData redundancy & protectionCeramic's ecosystem & business modelEpisode links: Joel Thorstensson on TwitterCeramic on TwitterSponsors: Omni: Access all of Web3 in one easy-to-use wallet! Permutation tests for hypothesis testing with animal social data: problems and potential solutions

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.08.02.232710v1?rss=1 Authors: Farine, D. R., Carter, G. G. Abstract: Generating insights about a null hypothesis requires not only a good dataset, but also statistical tests that are reliable and actually address the null hypothesis of interest. Recent studies have found that permutation tests, which are widely used to test hypotheses when working with animal social network data, can suffer from high rates of type I error (false positives) and type II error (false negatives). Here, we first outline why pre-network and node permutation tests have elevated type I and II error rates. We then propose a new procedure, the double permutation test, that addresses some of the limitations of existing approaches by combining pre-network and node permutations. We conduct a range of simulations, allowing us to estimate error rates under different scenarios, including errors caused by confounding effects of social or non-social structure in the raw data. We show that double permutation tests avoid elevated type I errors, while remaining sufficiently sensitive to avoid elevated type II errors. By contrast, the existing solutions we tested, including node permutations, pre-network permutations, and regression models with control variables, all exhibit elevated errors under at least one set of simulated conditions. Type I error rates from double permutation remain close to 5% in the same scenarios where type I error rates from pre-network permutation tests exceed 30%. The double permutation test provides a potential solution to issues arising from elevated type I and type II error rates when testing hypotheses with social network data. We also discuss other approaches, including restricted node permutations, testing multiple null hypotheses, and splitting large datasets to generate replicated networks, that can strengthen our ability to make robust inferences. Finally, we highlight ways that uncertainty can be explicitly considered during the analysis using permutation-based or Bayesian methods. Copy rights belong to original authors. Welcome to the Serious Social podcast, created by the straight-talking social media experts at immediate future. In this episode, we're talking data. Associate Director Belle Lawrence is joined by Managing Director Colin Jacobs as they discuss the data you should be collecting from social media and how to utilise it within your marketing mix.Our website: http://www.immediatefuture.co.uk Social profiles: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/IFTubes Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ImmediateFuture/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/immediate-future/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/iftweeter Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ifinstas/ Belle - So, CJ, when we go to conferences, we hear a lot about data in social and it's being heralded often as a great hope for marketing. Is that the case? CJ - Is it important and does it have an impactful role? Yes.Is it this new thing? Absolutely not, it's been around for years.Well, obviously, you don't know what you don't know, so, I don't want to sort of come across condescending, but I find it bizarre. There's a lot of agencies, too many agencies that claim to be social media agencies and they're only just opening their eyes to data, that is wholly wrong. So yes, very important, but no, it's not this new great thing. You should have been using data for years to inform your marketing mix. It's the great thing about social, isn't it? I mean, a number of us have worked in other disciplines whether that's traditional marketing out of home, TV, public relations. The beauty of social is there's a tangibility to it.You know instantly the eyeballs that have seen it versus those that haven't.There's none of this, ‘well there's an opportunity for 200,000 people to sleepily cross the road and look at this billboard' - there's none of that in social media, which is great.Belle - So, what can we track in social?CJ - Yeah, a really good question. There's a number of metrics and there are vanity metrics and there are sanity metrics. And I'm going to split the two, because there will be a number of people watching this that will go "Woah, a like is no sort of metric in marketing!"Well you're right, but you're also wrong. The vanity metrics, likes, engagements, video views, yes, they are a bit, "Look at us we've done some great things." But if you're not getting the vanity metrics your content's not resonating with the audience. So, you need some of the vanity to give you the "You're doing the right thing." If none of your content is getting vanity metrics you've got a lot a change that you need to make pronto. But once you're delivering that you then need to move on to the sanity metrics. Where you're starting to measure your share of voice the equity your brand's holding your position within the market and there are some sophisticated tools that you can do this with. Some of the viewers from traditional media will know that you can go and get Nielsen reports. And they'll show you whether you've moved on from 5% market share to 6%. But within social, there's a lot that we can get organically.... for full show notes, visit our website: http://immediatefuture.co.uk/podcasts/

Medical data are considered particularly sensitive personal information. Laws and regulations in most countries, including the USA and throughout Europe, generally aim to restrict sharing such information with the target of building privacy walls around each person’s data. But making such health data available more broadly is key to improved medical care, research and the advance of health science. Finland is the first country known to have adopted an approach to allow third parties to access health data for the purposes of scientific research, drug and health technology development and knowledge-based management in social and health care. Researchers, service developers and other legitimate data users will be able to collect, combine and process data from Finnish registries smoothly and securely. While most data will be anonymized, for particular applications individual identities can be shared. Those seeking access to such information will apply to a central authority that will screen applications to approve legitimate uses of Finland’s substantial database. It will accept applications for access starting in early 2020. Helsinki attorney Markus Myhrberg, member of Lexia explains how this will work in this podcast with the Data Privacy Detective. Markus heads Lexia’s IPR, data protection and marketing practices. The Finnish Act on the Secondary Use of Health and Social Data was adopted on March 13, 2019 and became effective on May 1, 2019. The text of the Act is available in Finnish, in Swedish and in English).

An interview with Spatial.ai about the collection and use of geo social data and its role within location intelligence.  Geosocial data is simply location-based social media data. It is media content (mostly text) produced by people on social platforms that is tied to specific locations. The location component is often coordinates in latitude and longitude, but it could be a tagged place or street address as well. This type of data is publicly available on nearly every major social platform including Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, event platforms, review sites, etc.

Learn how to develop a stronger social data strategy with business development badass, social media wizard, and Founder/CEO of StrikeSocial, Patrick McKenna. In this episode we discuss the best ways to use social platforms for data strategy and business development, how working hard to use and gather specific data can make you truly exceptional and smash some massive myths to oblivion.   Takeaways: Don't just rely on the platforms when they tell you they can find your customer for you. You need to work hard to be exceptional. It does not come easy. Remember that you are talking to a computer when gathering data and you need to be really specific when talking to that computer. Don‘t postpone making your data more efficient. That can waste time. Look at the data and adjust your budget accordingly right away. AdWords is more than just adding one word here and there. There are layers of data you need to consider and know about in order for your data to be successfully used. Get specific for results and be specific with your targets and you'll be able to see more in your data. Stay relevant. Keep up with the changes in the current platforms and keep an eye out for emerging platforms. Be transparent with your customers. If you're honest and real your customers will trust you and you'll be more likely to get the sales you're looking for. You may fail sometimes or a lot of times but you'll learn from those experiences and don't stop moving forward.     Links:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-mckenna-846a9b2/ Website: https://strikesocial.com/ Twitter: @vpatmck
