What does it take to fundamentally rethink how specialty insurance is traded, structured and scaled? In this episode, Robin Merttens is joined by Jeff Radke, co-founder and CEO of Accelerant, for a deep dive into the mechanics of a rapidly growing risk exchange that's quietly reshaping the MGA and MGU landscape. It has been three years since Jeff joined us on the InsTech podcast, and even Accelerant has radically evolved as a business. This isn't, however, just another technology story. Jeff shares frank insights on building trust in a data-driven ecosystem, how Accelerant has used AI to make tangible portfolio improvements and why he believes platform-based risk trading will become the dominant model for specialty lines. Unlike many other discussions about AI in insurance, this episode focuses on what's already working – from subrogation improvements to portfolio optimisation. There's also a broader message here: about stepping back to see how much the market has changed and why the next evolution may already be underway… Key Talking Points Building a global risk exchange – how Accelerant connects specialty MGAs and MGUs with capacity through a single, scalable platform The value of long-term partnerships – why Accelerant provides five-year capacity commitments and expects transparency in return From niche to global – supporting 200+ underwriting teams across 20 countries and over 225 specialty products Applying AI where it matters – reducing loss ratios and boosting subrogation with machine learning and large language models Cost leadership in a softening market – why expense ratio advantage trumps rate cycles in SME and specialty risks Looking ahead – how AI is reshaping roles, workflows and the entire insurance value chain The rise of risk exchanges – why specialty insurance is following the same path as bonds, mortgages and equities Staying ahead – why Accelerant is focused on evolution, not just competition If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a review on whichever platform you use or contact Robin Merttens on LinkedIn. Some podcast interviews are really fulfilling to be involved with. Sometimes it's the rapport I have with the guest and sometimes it's the subject matter and the insights that I find the most satisfying. Today's podcast is a rare combination because it's both of the above. Jeff Radke Co-Founder and CEO at Accelerant Holdings, is clearly on top of the world in this interview. His business is absolutely flying; it's now employing around 375 people and is connecting an amazing 190 MGAs with 12 insurers and 66 reinsurers on both sides of the Atlantic. The organisation wrote just over $1.7billion of premium in 2023. This is about four times the size the business was when we last spoke just over three years ago. Jeff is great fun to be around, but it's the vision and understanding of how the whole structure of large parts of the specialty insurance sector is changing that is what makes this such a good listen. Back in the old days growth at this speed might have been frowned upon, or at least viewed with a certain amount of scepticism. Not now – these days technological change means that the ultimate capital providers can drill right down into as much detail of the risks their capital is supporting as they want and they can asses the quality of their book in almost real time. Jeff has had a career that has given him an incredibly detailed view of the insurance value chain and his vision for how the new ways the constituent parts of that chain are sharing out the value that they create in much more meritocratic ways is fascinating. So If you have been spending time wondering why the MGA boom seems to have continued unabated even with a hard insurance market and a major reset in reinsurance, this is easily the most eloquent and enjoyable explanation you'll hear on the subject. You'll also learn of Accelerant's plans around captives, his thoughts on Lloyd's as well as underwriting classes as diverse as fish drying and credit LINKS: We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo: https://www.advantagego.com

Jeff Radke is CEO and Co-Founder of Accelerant, a technology-fueled insurance platform that empowers MGUs to more effectively and confidently serve small and medium enterprises. He has spent his career working across all areas of the insurance value chain, from underwriting to reinsurance in global markets. Prior to Accelerant, Jeff spent a decade at Argo Group International Holdings, but he became frustrated with thelegacy system's antiquated technology and emphasis on maintaining their position in the value chain over doing right by the customer. This inspired him to co-found Accelerant to enable data-driven innovation and collaboration that puts customers first. Accelerant rebuilds the way that underwriters share and exchange risk to improve outcomes for everyone, with a focus on the SMBs that power our global economy and their niche insurance needs. Highlights from the Show Jeff started his career in Reinsurance, which gave him an interesting perspective on insurance having looked at it from the end of the value chain Accelerant runs a risk exchange, meaning they connect MGAs/MGUs/Program Administrators (who they call Members) with risk capital on the other side of the platform that likes the kinds of Specialty risks these members are writing In between those parties, Accelerant's platform tries to make the regulatory and system complications as uncomplicated as possible by solving for them for their members It's almost the opposite of what a fronting carrier is, and is more of a portfolio manager of risk They try to provide stability of capital and appetite and the ability to capitalize on every opportunity an MGA finds They've also become a way for existing insurers to get into the E&S or Specialty space without having to build the technology stack, distribution relationships or underwriting talent It's very hard to build a business that can write large, esoteric, specialty risks and the higher volume E&O/PL, BOP and GL It's a completely different human skillset and tech capability to keep a tight watch and understanding on how small, Specialty Lines portfolios change over time They do monthly deep dives with their members to see if anything has changed with appetite, underwriting review, etc. to see if there's a potential driver of performance changes so they can react before it's ballooned out of control Traditionally, program administrators haven't gotten the detailed data they need on things like regulatory compliance, loss trends, filings, etc., and Accelerant has worked to be as transparent as possible rather than treating their information as proprietary or something not to share One reason Jeff thinks E&S will stay strong and not just be a fill-in for what can't go Admitted at the moment is because of the need to keep flexing on product and rate at a speed that the regulatory path cannot keep up with, especially with resource constraints there This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume III. In today's episode of Category Visionaries, we speak with Jeff Radke, Co-Founder and CEO at Accelerant, an insurance technology company that's raised over $500 Million in funding, about why empowering underwriters with cutting-edge technology helps everyone get access to the coverage they need. After years of dissatisfaction from industry veterans regarding the aging technology stacks the industry was working with, Jeffrey and his team have given people access to the data they need to drive the right insurance decisions. We also speak about Jeff's choice to get into the insurance industry at a very young age and how that led him to where he is today, building the relationships which have helped him grow both professionally and personally, how Accelerant grew to writing over a billion dollars last year, and why the path to success sometimes means changing direction.   Topics Discussed: Jeff's early start in the insurance space and what stimulated this decision at such a young age Industry dissatisfaction with the insurance sector's aging technology, and why Jeff and his team thought they could do it better Why relationships are so important to Jeff's career, and also to his personal growth as an individual Why, when it comes to insurance, data is much more important than the technology it's built on The flywheel of Accelerant's business growth and why Jeff is optimistic about the future Why a pivot at the right moment might be just what you need to keep on the path to success   Favorite book: Leadership and Self-Deception by The Arbinger Institute

Our educational systems, from pre school through the graduate level, are in a constant process of evolution and, in many ways improvement, as pedagogy becomes more sophisticated and curricula become more specialized in response to an ever more complex world. And yet, in some ways we're not at all keeping up and our schools and universities are falling short of how they need to be preparing students to succeed in the 21st century. But those gaps can also create opportunities for entrepreneurs and others to step in and help address unmet needs.    Joshua Anderson is founder of Accelerant Education, a Baton Rouge-based company that develops software specifically designed to help high school students learn computer science and computer programming. Joshua started Accelerant when he realized that only about half of the high schools in Baton Rouge have computer science programs. Joshua understands the value of a computer science education: he is a self-taught software engineer and a graduate of LSU's Flores MBA program. He also directs StartupGrind Baton Rouge, a community of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.  Marina Biragova is Executive Director of the Technology and Entrepreneurship Clinic at Southern University Law Center here in Baton Rouge. The clinic assists under-represented entrepreneurs across the state with their business formation and structuring, intellectual property, and compliance issues. Marina is also an Intellectual Property attorney and a small business advocate, with a specialty in technology and business law. It's because from the time we are young we are made to believe that speaking is a chore, or an assignment in school to be graded on and with random, non-personal subjects. But the key to any successful relationship, whether personal or professional, is knowing how to effectively communicate ideas, asking proper questions, and disciplining ourselves to master the craft. Later, we continue our conversation with YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee's District Executive, Krista Bold on the future of Lead Management and how it can continue to grow as we all navigate a return to normalcy.

“We're flipping the traditional model of what people think of as a carrier on its head”, says Aaron, a former attorney and insurance defence litigator, responsible for building out Accelerant's presence in the U.S.  Officially launched in January 2021, the team has grown from 3 to 45 and currently supports 15 ‘members' by providing capacity for their SME program business through a tech-fuelled risk exchange. “We're highly selective with whom we're supporting. There's something truly special about what we're doing and creating. There's another 7-10 members going through the on-boarding process.” Aaron shares his thoughts on the future of insurance - on distribution, CX, underwriting & pricing and claims – and how insurtech 3.0 will make it possible to underwrite more meaningful risk with better transparency, better data and better technology.  As well as sharing the traits Accelerant seek in new hires, Aaron talks through the opportunities for high performing talent and the advice he'd give to those looking for a move in to insurtech. “One day you might be doing HR, the next compliance or creating content for the website. You have to be prepared to do what it takes.” Connect with Aaron on https://www.linkedin.com/in/aarondicaprio/ (LinkedIn) or find out more about https://accelins.com/ (Accelerant) The Insurance Coffee House Podcast is hosted by Nick Hoadley, CEO, https://my.captivate.fm/www.insurance-search.com (Insurance Search), the Executive Search Consultancy for growing Insurance and Insurtech businesses across the globe. Jeff Radke is someone who has had senior roles in many areas of the insurance and reinsurance spectrum. His career ranges from reinsurance broking at Guy Carpenter to running PXRE, one of the last major Bermudian specialist retro writers. He then played a large variety of senior roles in over a decade at Argo Group, the internationally diversified specialty insurance and reinsurance group formed out of Argonaut's takeover of PXRE in 2007. But all those roles had one thing in common – all of them were at the very least one step removed from the end customer In his latest venture he is applying all that experience to the world of ultra-specialised, ultra-client-focused MGAs. It is a really interesting proposition because Jeff knows from his own experience that reinsurers and speciality insurers are keen to access portfolios of stable commercial risk to help balance their own increasingly volatile books Meanwhile after the shake-out and instability of the last couple of years, quality MGAs are looking for really solid and committed paper providers. Accelerant does all the things that other MGA incubators are doing including providing and sourcing growth capital, but it also uses its own paper and sources long-term third party insurance capital for its MGA members to give a complete service. It is clear that Jeff is incredibly energised by this project and I think it comes out all the way through this podcast. Listen on for a really interesting and fun encounter with someone who has clearly got the bit between his teeth. Starting with the question, “How can we pull repetitive tasks off our directors so they can serve the mission at a greater capacity?” Natalie has been laser focused on streamlining business processes. From manning the front desk and folding towels, to memberships and business processes, Natalie Johnson's Y career spans from South Florida to Pikes Peak, Colorado.   In her new venture as the Vice President of Customer Transactions at the YMCA Managed Service Organization, Natalie is trailblazing a new path and sharing her passion for helping YMCAs find better operational processes. Listen how in this week's episode of the Accelerant.   As Paperless as Possible  Innovating in the midst of a pandemic, Natalie's team found ways to go from nearly 80% to 100% paperless. Using their website and their operational platform powered by Daxko, they found greater efficiency to scale processes, access to vital membership information, and curate the best member experience.  Data Quality  One core area the MSO specializes in is ensuring the data needed to function properly is accurate, including helping Y's evaluate if their operating system is set up to count members correctly.  Own Your Calendar  Natalie's skill in driving operational health shows up in her life and personal practices. In blocking time between meetings, Natalie ensure she has space to prioritize her wellbeing. Hey everyone! In episode 19, I'm joined by Dr. Virginia Summey (@HistorySummey), and independent historian and faculty fellow in the Lloyd International Honors College at the University of Norther Carolina-Greensboro, and we're talking about a VERY divisive topic in American political history: the Southern Strategy. We get into the background of the Southern Strategy, and why the Republican Party came to rely on it to swing races their way. We also talk about how population shifts, voting blocs, and the Civil Rights movement became powerful forces in the American political demography of the time. Oh, and we talk about Barry Goldwater, and more importantly, Dr. Summey's upcoming book! Hope you all enjoy. YDKH's theme music is by the musician Smith the Mister called "Beach Buggy."
