Catching Fire chapters 14-15 Life threw Liz some work-related lemons this past week, but we're here and discussing how best to turn them into bonus lemonade! We chat about future plans for discussing future plans, give an update on what's going on in strings world, and get attacked by Earl--and that's all before we get into our crazy chapters! We learn all about sugar, Hunger Games hacks, and Dr. Seuss ass map design. There's also some juicy critical stuff to discuss re: character work and the overall metaphor of the Games. Sugar cube?

It's the 21st of September which means there's only one song to listen to today! We're doing a pre meal exercise challenge and we want YOU to join! I've got some hilarious stories from one of the coolest former 1st graders I've ever heard of. Kids are the best comedians. Football has been great so far, minus this one annoying comment from those calling the games on TV. There are certain phrases that don't make sense to use early on in the season and that should be banned from use until we are 6 weeks in. I write what I think is a funny prayer joke, but you of course will determine that. Finally I finish with some advice for all the potential parade drivers. The Brisker Rav was known for his great exactness when it came to Mitzvot, such as making matzot or picking a lulav and etrog. He was equally careful to avoid Averot as well. And he was extremely careful with the l aws of Terumot and Ma'asrot in Israel. Fruit and vegetables grown and Israel need to be tithed . There are various hashgachot/ supervising agencies that take care of that, but the Brisker Rav ( and many others ) were careful to retithe in their own homes , because they felt that mistakes could arise, and things could go wrong with anything done in a mass fashion. (They are even great Rabbi s who retithe the soda in Israel , because it has fruit juice in it. When we were in Israel visiting Rav Binyamin Finkel , known as Binyamin Hasadik, he gave us soda to drink . We noticed that there was a letter Mem on it , and when we ask ed about it, they told us it stood for Ma'aser because he had retithed the bottle . He was careful to say that it was really kosher and this was just an added humra/stringency ) If you have 100 apples, you could take one from the 100 as teruma , and 10 apples from the 100 is maaser. But there is a law that you can't take from one crop on another, or different fruits from different trees or batches- just like when you're taking challah , you have to know which batch it is from. The Brisker Rav, in his chumrot , was always concerned that if there were 100 apples, they might have come from different fields or different crops. So he would tithe each fruit separately. He would cut each and every apple , and although it was a little bit more difficult this way, he had to take care of it properly. It happen ed once that a group of about 30 orphans came to visit his home. They were surviv ors from World War II and learning in a Mossad in Sanhedria. The Rav wanted to serve them oranges , but we said , he would always cut out a piece from each fruit. He was worried that it might not be the proper respect for these orphans to get an orange with a cut in it. So he came up with an idea - He would cut off the top of each orange and put a sugar cube in each one. In that way, it would look like a decorative item, a pretty orange with a sugar cube on top! That is how far he went in his thinking, to make sure that there w ouldn't be even the slightest insult to an orphan, but at the same time keep ing the Hala cha . This ingenious idea that he came up with show ed the level of his sensitivity , which is mind boggling. Have a wonderful day.

War, marriage, and opportunity are just some of the reasons we might uproot our entire lives from one homestead to another. And while there are incredible opportunities that come with leaving all that we know and love behind, there can also be immense violence and loss -- be it to culture, identity, or life. What is at stake for those who try to assimilate into a brand new world? In episode two of Lagralane Spirits, The Violence of Migration, we tell our own migration stories and explore what our roots mean to our past, present, and future. We dig into this joy and pain with guest Natividad Lagramada Huff, also affectionately known as “Mama Nattie.” This week: Enjoy a Sazerac and share this recipe's origins Yvonne asks, “What gets lost in migration?” Yvonne dives into the importance of language in her biracial household Yvonne shares with Jason how war played a part in how her parents met Jason poses a question, “Our complete identity cannot be wrapped up in our name, so does that make us other?” Jason shares his thoughts on the current racial climate in America and how we are going through a reconstruction era again where we're finding out more information about the meaning of race in our country Jason and Yvonne talk to Mama Nattie, Yvonne's mother, about her migration story from the Philippines to The United States Mamma Nattie explains to Yvonne that when she moved to America, she didn't have many people to speak Tagalog with and how that affected her using the language at home, and why it wasn't taught to her children. Mamma Nattie tells Yvonne and Jason, “Wherever you guys are I'll be home." Cocktail: Sazerac Recipe 1.5 oz of Cognac or Rye Whiskey 1.4 oz Absinthe 1 Sugar Cube 3 dashes of Peychaud's Bitters History & Meaning The Sazerac was invented in 1838 by Antoine Amedie Peychaud. Peychaud was a Creole apothecary who immigrated to New Orleans from the West Indies. This drink was invented in the same year the forced migration of the Trail of Tears took place. Peychaud was living in New Orleans during the Slave Trade, which forcibly migrated and sold millions of West African people to slave trading ports all over the New World, including a port in New Orleans.

About Natasha Dressler: My love for writing and all things related to PR (Public Relations) began at the age of 16. I started my own music magazine (a ‘zine called Sugar Cube) and quickly began to use my passion for networking and self-promotion to get record stores to carry my self-published magazine for free. For those of age that remember independent record stores, there were always racks with flyers or self-published magazines, it was a cool labor of love. Marketing, Networking, and Public Relations are in my DNA.I spent 18+ years in high results, fast-paced industries: Cosmetics, Tech, and within Marketing Agencies.
