Consider Joseph's Powerful Reflection on His Love and Divine Purpose. Are You Willing to Accept Unanticipated/Unwanted Roles God Has Prepared for You? MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this powerful reflection on love and divine purpose, we're invited to explore the profound journey of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. As we delve into this narrative, we're reminded of the transformative power of faith and obedience. Joseph's story, rooted in the Gospel of Matthew, showcases how God's plans often unfold in unexpected ways, challenging our preconceptions and inviting us into a deeper trust. The transcription beautifully illustrates the internal struggle Joseph faced, balancing his love for Mary with his sense of duty and the overwhelming responsibility of raising the Son of God. This narrative encourages us to consider how we respond to God's surprising interventions in our own lives. Are we ready, like Joseph, to embrace a calling that may seem daunting or even impossible? As we reflect on Joseph's journey, we're prompted to examine our own willingness to step into roles that God has prepared for us, even when they seem beyond our capabilities. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, God is working His will in my life. (Philippians 2:13). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV) 1) Joseph and Mary's situation: Matthew 1:18-25 - The story of Joseph considering divorcing Mary quietly and the angel's message to him; 2) Jesus as the Son of God and Son of David: Luke 1:32-33 - "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David."; 3) The virgin birth prophecy: Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."; 4) God's guidance through dreams: Matthew 1:20 - "But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream..."; 5) Joseph's role as Jesus' earthly father: Luke 2:41-52 - The story of Jesus in the temple, where Joseph is referred to as His father; 6) The concept of adoption in God's plan: Ephesians 1:5 - "He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will."; 7) Jesus as Emmanuel (God with us): Matthew 1:23 - "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"); 8) God's overflowing love: 1 John 4:8 - "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."; and 9) The theme of obedience to God's commands: John 14:15 - "If you love me, keep my commands.". Joseph Experiences a Profound Exploration of Human Love and Divine Purpose as He Grapples with His Role in the Greatest Story Ever Told MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this profound exploration of love and divine purpose, we're invited to witness the inner struggle of Joseph as he grapples with his role in the greatest story ever told. The narrative beautifully weaves together themes of trust, obedience, and the transformative power of God's love. We're reminded that sometimes our greatest callings come wrapped in uncertainty, much like Joseph's middle-of-the-night revelations. The episode challenges us to consider: How often do we tremble at the magnitude of God's plans for our lives? It encourages us to embrace the 'desert rain' of divine love, even when it defies our expectations. As we reflect on Joseph's journey, we're prompted to examine our own willingness to step into roles that God has prepared for us, even when they seem beyond our capabilities. This message resonates deeply with anyone facing life-changing decisions or unexpected responsibilities, reminding us that with God's guidance, we can rise to extraordinary callings. We Are Invited to Reflect on Joseph's Extraordinary Journey, As We Contemplate His Struggles Along with His Love and Joy MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this profound exploration of love and divine purpose, we're invited to reflect on Joseph's extraordinary journey. As we contemplate his struggles with an unexpected pregnancy and the weight of raising the Son of God, we're reminded of how God often works in mysterious ways. The story challenges us to trust in God's plan, even when it seems overwhelming or contrary to societal norms. Just as Joseph was called to 'adopt the one who will adopt the world,' we too are asked to embrace our unique roles in God's grand design. This narrative encourages us to see beyond our immediate circumstances and recognize the beautiful symphony God is composing in our lives. It's a powerful reminder that our perceived limitations or fears don't define us; instead, it's our willingness to say 'yes' to God's calling that shapes our destiny. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, God is working His will in my life. (Philippians 2:13). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. Aleem Maqbool meets Richard Butler, who describes a new-found connection with Jesus during an Ayahuasca retreat in Mexico, after discovering spirituality through meditation. Some psychedelic drugs, like the plant-based DMT found in the ayahuasca drink, have been the subject of medical trials for their help with mental health conditions such as depression, with some successful results. But alongside their medical potential is, for some, a connection between their use and spirituality. To discuss what might be going on, the potential and the dangers of the so-called psychedelic renaissance, Aleem is joined by a fascinating panel. Rev Rita Powell is an Episcopal Priest who has taken magic mushrooms as part of a University trial in the US, Dr Ben Sessa is a psychiatrist involved in psychedelic research here in the UK and Dr David Luke, Associate Professor at the University of Greenwich, explores spirituality, psychedelics and ‘exceptional human experiences' in his work.Opening Music: Ayahuasca Icaros - Medicine (Cures For All) Producer: Rebecca Maxted Assistant Producer: James Leesley

On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Adam Quiney. Adam is an executive leadership coach specialising in working with the “Smartest People in the Room.” A former software developer and attorney, Adam's learned the hard way about the costs that come from keeping your heart safe and chasing after external rewards to feel whole and complete. From love, Adam is connection, passion, presence, wit and brilliance. From fear, he is awkward, robotic, apathetic, irrelevant and arrogant. He's learned to embrace all these parts of himself, and works with others to do the same in their own lives. Living with his beautiful wife and their dog in Victoria, B.C, he is a man on a mission to bring the world to a more inspired and fully-expressed place. In today's episode, Adam and I explore how to harness plant medicine to create meaningful impact in the world - in particular, discussing the power of plants as ancient “medicine” - in whatever form they are worked with, whether herbal, psychedelic, or archetypally. We begin to understand how plant medicine can help us heal and step more deeply into the meaningful work we are born to do, and how we can integrate the journey with plant medicine to fully express our gifts. What You'll Learn from this Episode: The purpose of plant medicine is to help us to heal. We think that we already have “medicine” in the world, but the medicine we know in the Western world is actually “drugs” that temporarily halt the symptoms and disconnect us Instead, “medicine” is something which supports us to do our own healing and reconnect us to our soul's wholeness. This is often more challenging because we have to confront the wound that got created in us that has been stored for years Genuine healing, like this, can feel like we are getting ‘worse' before we get better - because we have to go through ‘breakdown' - or healing response - before the ‘breakthrough' - the hardest part is staying the course in the midst of us doing that whilst everyone else is popping pills We have learned to relate to ourselves as “this is just the way I am ” - which has us numb our possibility. Possibility often looks like ‘impossibility' because it's found in the unknown and creates us to fear that “there's no way I can do that” What plant medicine does is to support us to come out of our conscious mind, drop our ego and personality - and connect with pure spirit - so that we can lean into the areas we have shut the door on - unconsciously - and visit them to reveal and face the fears we have and start to heal them, making them conscious The more healing we do - the more wounds we heal - the more we reconnect to who we were born as, and the more we can discover our true purpose. In fact, the more we heal, the more magnetic we become to be around, and the more of a clear channel we are as healing activators of others - aka the more we can step into our gifts as healers. When we think of meditation, a lot of us think of chanting and things affiliated with other religions--but at its core, that's not what it is. Meditation can simply be calming the mind by disciplined focus on some external stimulus, like your breath, your heart, or the ambient sounds around you... and if your mind is scattered and flitting from topic to topic, there is certainly great physiologic value in this, as it will get you out of "fight or flight" and into the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state. Also, if your mind is too loud, it makes it all but impossible for you to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit--so quieting your mind through this form of meditation is valuable for that reason as well. Biblically, though, meditation is more than just quieting your "monkey brain." That just gets you back to neutral. Rather, biblical meditation involves focused thought upon an idea long enough for you to get a picture in your mind of what you're contemplating. We all do this all the time; it's just a matter of what we're thinking about. Andrew Wommack likes to say that if you know how to worry, you know how to meditate. Worry is meditation upon something negative. Paul tells us what we should be meditating on in Philippians 4:8: "whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things." The reason this is so important is because scripture tells us that our thoughts determine what we believe, just like planting seeds will determine what kind of harvest we get. Proverbs 23:7 says, "for as a man thinks in his heart, so is he." We can act contrary to what we truly believe for a short period of time, but what we think in our hearts is who we really are, and it will come out eventually. This is why Jesus said that the most important parable He ever taught was the Parable of the Sower (Matt 13:3-23). In the parable, the "seed" is the Word of God, and soil is the hearts of the listeners. It's the state of the soil which determines how well that seed will grow and produce a harvest. There are other possible seeds besides God's word, though--in the parable, there were thorns and tares in one type of soil, too. Jesus later defines these for us as "the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches" (Matt 13:22), which can choke the Word such that it becomes unfruitful. Those sound like typical sources of worry to me. Think of thoughts in general--any type of thought--as a potential seed that can eventually bear a harvest if you plant it and cultivate it (or meditate upon it until you can see it in your mind). A stray thought here or there can't do this any more than a seed can without the right environment for it to grow--which is why we're told in scripture to take our thoughts captive (2 Cor 10:5). Think of this like weeding the 'garden' of your heart. If you don't want the harvest, then pluck up the plant before it can bear fruit--or, better yet, avoid exposing yourself to the seed in the first place, if you can control it. This isn't always possible, but we can choose what we watch, what we listen to, what kind of church we go to (one that preaches faith or unbelief), and what kind of people we spend time with. "Bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33)--so if you surround yourself with people who are negative, complaining, undisciplined, or any other negative character trait, most likely it'll rub off on you eventually. Those people influence how you think, and unwittingly this plants "seeds" in your heart that will eventually bear a harvest, if they are allowed to do so. It takes discipline to control our imaginations, of course. Just like the Second Law of Thermodynamics describes entropy in the universe (which means that left to themselves, all systems go from order to disorder), so the tremendous power available in our minds will accomplish nothing if we don't focus it appropriately. Worse, if we use our imaginations for an actively destructive purpose like worrying, we might end up with exactly what we're essentially "believing" for. A medical example of this is the placebo versus the nocebo effect: about 30% of people (probably those who are most "suggest-able") in clinical trials will typically get better even if they're given a sugar pill rather than the actual medication being tested, because they believe it will help them. Their minds make it work. The nocebo is the same principle in reverse: if you believe something will make you worse, it very well might, even if the substance itself is neutral. This is the whole concept behind affirmations, or positive confessions: say something long or often enough, and eventually it'll sink down into your subconscious mind, and you'll start to believe it--even if you don't at first. Not what we superficially say, but what we truly believe, determines how we will act. Other religions and spiritual traditions jump onto this too, in books like "The Secret"--because it's a neutral principle which can work for us or against us. It's just part of the way God set up the world. In Genesis 11:6, speaking of the Tower of Babel, God says, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, now nothing they imagine to do will be impossible for them." This was a negative story, but it illustrates the principle as God made it. Jesus said the same thing on the flip side when the disciples were amazed that the fig tree withered when he cursed it: "Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe you receive them, and you will have them." (Mark 11:23-24). When I was a kid, I read this verse, took it at face value, and commanded the mountain outside my bedroom window to be cast into the sea. Nothing happened, of course... but I also didn't expect anything to happen. That's the 'caveat'--you have to actually believe what you're saying, like Jesus did. And that's why it's so important for you to "guard your heart with all diligence"--because out of it literally "spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:20-23). But not immediately; as with any plant, harvests come "first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head" (Mark 4:28). Gardening is hard work; you have to constantly plant not just what you want, but you have to prepare the soil, water the seed, and pluck up competing weeds that might steal the nutrients from your fledgling little plant and choke it. It's just like that with our minds. That's why biblical meditation--using a positive imagination to picture what we want, to visualize God's promises coming to pass--is so important. Here's an overview of some of the Hebrew and Greek words in scripture translated to meditate (or to imagine, speak, ponder, etc), their context, and how they help to back up this idea. HAGAH: meaning to meditate, speak, imagine, study, mutter, utter, muse, devise Joshua 1:8: "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate H1897 therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." Notice that God didn't tell Joshua to just read the book of the law. He told him to meditate on it day and night, to the point where it's coming out of his mouth continually. That's what was required for him to truly follow what was written. That's what was necessary for him to prosper and have success. Psalm 1:2-3: "But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate H1897 day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers." These are the results of meditating on God's word... versus: Psalm 2:1: "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine H1897 a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 'Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.' He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision..." The ungodly use this same principle of meditation to produce evil. This psalm shows that it won't ultimately work for them, but only because God will step in in the end, just as He did at the flood when the imaginations of men's hearts were only evil all the time (Genesis 6:5) and then when the men of the repopulated earth tried to build the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:6). Psalm 2 looks ahead to when God will step in again, as described in the book of Revelation. Psalm 35:28: "And my tongue shall speak H1897 of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long." Psalm 63:6: "When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate H1897 on thee in the night watches." Psalm 71:24: "My tongue also shall talk H1897 of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt." Psalm 77:12: "I will meditate H1897 also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings." Psalm 143:5: "I remember the days of old; I meditate H1897 on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands." Consider the fact that the man who wrote these psalms started out a shepherd boy, the youngest of his brothers and some speculate that he was even illegitimate--and he became the greatest king Israel ever had, to the point where the Messiah was called by his name, "Son of David" (Luke 18:38). And much of what we know about meditation comes from him. Psalm 38:12: "They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine H1897 deceits all the day long." And yet, David knew that his enemies were using this same principle against him. He spent some 13-17 years on the run from these enemies (we don't know how old he was when he was anointed king, so we don't know exactly how long). It certainly looked to him like they were winning for quite awhile. Fortunately, David persisted in envisioning and trusting and believing in God's promises coming to pass, even when everything seemed to be against him, and circumstances went from bad to much worse. In 1 Samuel 30:1-6, David had finally fled with his men out of Israel altogether, and was dwelling in the land of his enemies, when their city (Ziklag) was burned to the ground, their wives and children and everything they had stolen, and his men turned on him and spoke of stoning him. The natural human response to this would have been to give in to emotions of despair, but instead David "strengthened himself in the Lord" (1 Sam 30:6). You know that this took incredible discipline on his part, to fix his thoughts on what God said and not his current circumstances. Some believe that David encouraged himself by writing Psalm 61 after Ziklag was burned. The result was that not only did David and his men recover everything that was taken from them, but within days, he was crowned king--at long, long last. Prov 15:28: "The heart of the righteous studieth H1897 to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things." Back to the idea of entropy: cultivating our minds to produce righteousness, wisdom, and a positive imagination doesn't just happen. We have to study. We have to do this work. This is the process of being transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Prov 24:1-2: "Do not be envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; For their heart studieth H1897 destruction, and their lips talk of mischief." The point here is that while the righteous studies wisdom and godly principles, the wicked are doing just the opposite. They too will reap what they sow (Gal 6:7). YETSER: imagination, form, framing, purpose, conception. Genesis 6:5: "And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination H3336 of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." Genesis 8:21: "And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination H3336 of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done." Deut 31:19-21: "Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant. And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination H3336 which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware." God knew long before the Israelites ever disobeyed Him that they would disobey. You can argue that this is because God is omniscient and knows the end from the beginning, and that's certainly true too--but this verse shows that God knew it (at least in part) because he could see what they were imagining. He knew their thoughts would determine their actions. This is exactly what happened in Numbers 13, when the Israelites sent the twelve spies into the Promised Land. God had promised to give them the land, but the spies returned with a "negative report". It wasn't an untrue report, mind you--the spies reported that the land was full of giants, and it was. Only Joshua and Caleb recognized that while true, that fact was irrelevant. What they should have been focused upon was God's promise that He would give the land to them, regardless of its current inhabitants. But the ten spies' negative report produced fear in the hearts of the people, and that entire generation never got to experience God's intended blessing for them. They died in the wilderness--all except for Joshua, who became the leader after Moses, and actually led the people in forty years later, and Caleb, who at eighty-five years old, was just as strong as he'd been in his forties (Joshua 14:11). He took the mountain of Hebron where the most intimidating Canaanites lived for his inheritance (Joshua 14:6-15). Psalm 103:14: "For he knoweth our frame; H3336 he remembereth that we are dust." The word 'frame' is also the word elsewhere translated meditation or thoughts, so it's not speaking just of the physical frame. The context here is speaking of our sins, and God's compassion upon us for our weakness. In other words, none of this is easy. God knows that. He pities us and has compassion upon us. Isaiah 26:3: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind H3336 is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." I love this verse. It gives us the recipe for peace. "Perfect peace" in Hebrew is actually shalom shalom shalom: the word for peace written three times. The translators presumably didn't know how else to translate that but "perfect." David modeled this for us at Ziklag, intentionally turning his mind to the Lord. Jesus modeled this for us when sleeping on the boat in the middle of the storm (Mark 4:35-41). Abraham modeled this for us when he kept his mind on God's promise of a child and not the impossibility of his and Sarah's circumstances (Romans 4:18-22). It's not easy, but the result is shalom shalom shalom. SIYACH: meditate, seek, pray, commune, muse, ponder. 1 Chronicles 16:9: "Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk H7878 ye of all his wondrous works." Psalm 77:6: "I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune H7878 with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search." Psalm77:12: "I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk H7878 of thy doings." Psalm 105:2: "Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk H7878 ye of all his wondrous works." Psalm 119:15: "I will meditate H7878 in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways." (and repeatedly throughout Psalm 119) Proverbs 23:7: "for as he thinks in his heart, so is he." Hope YAHAL: wait, tarry, trust, hope, be patient. Hope can be considered positive imagination. It's the precursor for faith (Hebrews 11:1). Romans 8:24-25: "For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it." Psalm 42:5: "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance." Greek dianoia = mind, understanding, imagination This is a command. It's not merely talking about intellectual study, though of course that's part of it. What starts out as an intellectual exercise eventually becomes the mental picture of what we see on the inside. Matthew 22:37: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." Eph 1:18: "The eyes of your understanding G1271 being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints" Eph 4:18: "Having the understanding G1271 darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart" Col 1:21: "And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind G1271 by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled." Heb 8:10: "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, G1271 and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people" 1 Peter 1:13: "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, G1271 be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;" Greek logismos: thought, imagination, reasoning, judgment "Casting down imaginations, G3053 and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" A few more examples of this principle in action: Genesis 13:16: God showed Abram the dust of the earth as a symbol of his descendants, and the land of Canaan that would be filled with them. Genesis 15:5: God showed Abram the stars as a picture of his descendants Mark 6:41: before feeding the 5000 with five loaves and two fish, Jesus looks up (ANABLEPO), seeing into the unseen realm, and gives thanks. (2 Cor 5:7: we walk by faith, not by sight... and this works because that's where all the spiritual blessings already exist (Eph 1:3). # IntroductionPeter wrote that the Old Testament prophets carefully searched what they had written in order to figure out what was in what they had written (1 Peter 1:10-11). There were clues about the Christ, who He would be, when He would come, what sufferings and glories would be His. God's Spirit moved them to write just as wind fills a sail (2 Peter 1:21), but they didn't have the entire map; they were making it.One of the tiny details the Spirit revealed was about a city which didn't make more than a small dot on the map. Now it's a different story. You can't turn two pages in the Advent/Christmas section of the Cantus without singing a lyric about it, sometimes even reading the title. "O Little Town of Bethlehem." A king's birth put it on the map. It's actually *two* kings, one just more famous, though they are both related. King David was born in Bethlehem Ephrathah. For a while David was known as the son of Jesse who lived there (1 Samuel 16:1), but David's victories against a lion and a giant and nations, plus his forty years on the throne, turned his hometown into the what the angels dubbed the “city of David" (Luke 2:4, 11), even though the OT historical books refer to the city of David as Jerusalem. I'm sure the Bethlehemians posted a special sign in David's honor at the city limits. The city wasn't big, yet a warrior-king came from there and led the nation toward its golden age. It was the stuff of legends, and became the stuff of prophecy. Around 300 years after David the prophet Micah saw the birth of a new ruler in David's line who would be born in Bethlehem, and we know that birth happened another 700 years later, with some of the results still to come. And as significant as the detail about Bethlehem bringing a king, the emphasis in Micah 5 is on the character of that king. *God sent a shepherd.*# Labor PainsSimilar to Isaiah's light after darkness and peace after pain, so Micah shows security after a scattering, coming home after exile, glory after groaning. Like a woman in travail, a child would be born who would tend his sheep.God's flock—Zion/Jerusalem/Israel—had been:- 4:6 - driven away and afflicted- 4:7 - cast off- 4:10 - writhing and groaning, taken out of the city (of Jerusalem) into captivity- 4:11 - attacked by many nations- 5:1 - siege against itThe Lord continues to speak, but turns from Jerusalem as representing the nation to "you," Bethlehem Ephrathah, names that mean house of bread in a place of fruitfulness.> But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, > who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, > from you shall come forth for me > one who is to be ruler in Israel, > whose coming forth is from of old, > from ancient days. > Therefore he shall give them up until the time > when she who is in labor has given birth; > then the rest of his brothers shall return > to the people of Israel. > And he shall stand and shepherd his flock > in the strength of the LORD, > in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. > And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great > to the ends of the earth. > And he shall be their peace. (Micah 5:2–5 ESV)Bethlehem was **too little to be among the clans of Judah**, with "clans" a word referring to 1,000, the typical number for a unit of soldiers; they weren't even big enough to muster a serious number of troops (compare to verse 1).Though small, big things would come from her (not entirely unrelated to what Queen Lucy says in _The Last Battle_, “Yes, in our world too, a stable once had something inside it that was bigger than our whole world.”). **From you will come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel.** The next phrase has to be the bigger surprise: **whose origin is from old, from ancient days**. The context argues that this means more than a long time ago, three centuries since David. Micah might not have grasped how ancient, though the word “old” (*qeḏem*) is sometimes translated “everlasting” and can describe God's purposes (Isaiah 37:26) and God's counsels (Isaiah 45:21), the time before Creation (Proverbs 8:22), and God Himself (Deuteronomy 33:27; Habakkuk 1:12)(see Thomas E. McComiskey). This ruler's origins are supernatural, eternal.Verse 3 has three parts: 1) an abandoning, 2) a birth, 3) a return.Who is the **he** that gives up the **them** and who is the **she** who births a **his**? He is the LORD, she is Israel from whom the Messiah would come, and the them/brothers are also Israel, considered individually. When the Lord “gives them up” it's letting them have the judgement they deserved. Assyria conquered northern Israel, Babylon took Judah captive, the Romans eventually ruled over the land, and the nation persisted in her disobedience to the Mosaic Covenant. The key change is a birth. The **she** is *not* Mary. Isaiah's vision of a virgin birth is an individual woman (Isaiah 7:14), known to us as Mary, as Matthew leaves no doubt (Matthew 1:22-23). This "she" in labor in Micah 5:3 is more than Bethlehem, it is the covenant nation. In Micah 4:9-10 she is as a woman in labor pains, writhing and groaning. As Eve was promised a deliverer, so Israel is waiting for her rescue and redemption. When she's given birth—related to the coming forth of a **ruler**—then **his brothers shall return to the people of Israel**. Their “return” is because they had been a part. And we know now that this is still waiting for full fulfillment. John said Jesus “came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him” (John 1:11). A remnant believed, but the rest were hardened until “all Israel will be saved" (Romans 11:25-26).It may not be surprising to us, less of a "wow," but it's still *good*, and part of our hope. **He shall stand and (feed) his flock.** He is not a hireling who runs; He “will assume His post” NET). And He “feeds,” He “pastures” in that He guides and manages for their food. The ESV translates the metaphor as "shepherds," the one who takes care of. “His flock" is assumed from the text, and the way an Eastern king would relate to his people; as David was called from being a shepherd to shepherd the people (Psalm 78:70-72). *God sent a Shepherd.*The shepherd tends **in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God**. This overlaps with Isaiah's view of the King as “Mighty God" (Isaiah 9:6). The majesty of the name is in the excellence of everything the name brings to mind, all the associations. "Democrats" = death, "Republicans" = spineless. Trump and spray tan. The name of the LORD = **majesty**, eminence. His name is *life and strength and truth.***And they (his flock) shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.** We've only begun to see this, as the good news of Jesus Christ makes new men and families and peoples wherever God's Spirit gives faith. But there will still be a great, more visible coming of His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, and He will reign forever and ever. The earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as water covers the sea. > For the earth will be filled > with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD > as the waters cover the sea. > (Habakkuk 2:14 ESV, and 2:20 “let all the earth keep silence before Him”)This king-shepherd has been born. He is coming again. **And he shall be their peace.** He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He gives peace. He makes peace.# A Shepherd to ShepherdsCaesar Augustus decreed it was time to find out how many taxpayers he could fleece, so around 6-4 BC he called for an enrollment, and citizens returned to their hometowns to be registered. “Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David” (Luke 2:1-4).Outside of Bethlehem, the *first group* to hear of the birth of the Shepherd were shepherds. “In the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night….” Of all those on earth, God sent His angelic host to fellow shepherds. > the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10–11 ESV)“Shepherds, why this jubilee? … Come to Bethlehem and see” (“Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”)Matthew quotes Micah 5:2 in Matthew 2:6 in the words of the chief priests and scribes who knew Micah. They knew Bethlehem was the center, even if they didn't believe it. “So it is written by the prophet.” So God fulfilled His Word. # ConclusionIsrael, and we like her, are like a flock of sheep (Isaiah 53:6) that need a shepherd. - we have grief and sorrows (Isaiah 53:4), we need a Shepherd- we have transgressions and iniquities (Isaiah 53:5), we need a Shepherd- we have conflict (no peace) and wounds (Isaiah 53:5), we need a Shepherd- we walk through the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4), we need a Shepherd- we live in the presence of enemies, we need a Shepherd (Psalm 23:5)- we have to watch for fierce wolves (Acts 20:28-30), we need a Shepherd- we have gone astray and gotten lost (Isaiah 53:6, see also 1 Peter 2:25), we need a Shepherd *God sent a Shepherd.* He is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4). The Lord is our Shepherd (Psalm 23:1).More than Santa knowing if you've been bad or good, more than Google tracking your keystrokes, the Shepherd knows His sheep and gave His blood for the sheep. He is the Lamb-Shepherd (Revelation 7:17), the Shepherd-King. The smallness of origin is no limitation, neither is the length of wait time, or how it matches the expectations of men. God's promise was for Christmas and then for Consummation. The second advent of our Shepherd will be worth waiting for. ----------## ChargeThe incarnation is not an imperative, it is a true story, foretold and for us and forever. Believe in the baby born in Bethlehem. And also, listen to the voice of your Shepherd in the Word, and trust Him to put you into a condition to function well, to “equip” (καταρτίσαι) you with all the good you need.## Benediction:> Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr David Luke, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich. I first encountered David's work a few years ago when I attended the biennial academic conference, Breaking Convention, of which David is a co-founder, director and chair. As you may know, I speak at a lot of conferences for my work, and I was particularly struck by this one, for their skill in weaving together different disciplines associated with the research of psychedelic substances, which is an area that is not only rich, but also very complex. Over the course of a few days I encountered talks and presentations spanning everything from medicine, psychology and anthropology, to sociology, law, politics and the arts – and so I thought who better to explore the theme of integration with, than David. Having published more than 100 academic papers, including ten books, David's work focuses on transpersonal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially those occasioned by psychedelics. When he is not running clinical drug trials with LSD, doing DMT field experiments or observing apparent weather control with Mexican shamans, he directs the Ecology, Cosmos and Consciousness salon. Recorded on 13th Oct 2022.
“Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust. O my soul, you have said to the LORD, "You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You." Psalm 16 begins with the title “A Michtam of David”. The word Michtam is of uncertain origin. Chapters 56-60 are Michtam psalms too. The word Michtam means "to engrave or sculptured writing." It comes from a noun meaning "gold." It is worthy of being written in gold. The Michtam psalms end on triumphant notes. They preserve the idea of resurrection. Martin Luther translated it as "a golden jewel." Spurgeon called this Psalm “The Golden Psalm.” Other commentators call it, “The Psalm of the Precious Secret”, “The Secret Treasure” and “David's Jewel.” This Psalm may have been written shortly after the Lord gave His gracious covenant to David and assured him of an enduring throne (2 Sam. 7). That covenant was eventually fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of David (Luke 1:32-33). The style of David's response to the covenant (2 Sam. 7:18-29) matches that of Psalm 16, a combination of joy, praise to God, humility, and submission to the divine will. Other Bible teachers believe that it was written after David spared Saul's life the second time and even though Saul left off seeking to kill him, David was still hiding from him. As David meditated on the Lord's goodness in his private devotions, it appears that the language he used (1 Samuel 26:19-20), is echoed in this psalm (16:4-6). Psalm 16 is also a Messianic Psalm. Peter referred to it in his message at Pentecost (Acts 2:25-31), and said it referred to Jesus. Paul also quotes from this Psalm in the synagogue at Antioch of Pisidia (Acts 13:35) as he preached on the resurrection of Christ. In this third Messianic Psalm, you can find the Life of Christ (v. 8), the Death of Christ (v. 9), the resurrection of Christ (v. 10), and the ascension of Christ (v. 11). Psalm 16 is a very personal hymn of joy that focuses on the goodness of the Lord. The personal pronoun "my" is used over a dozen times (my trust, my soul, my delight, my goodness, my cup, my heart, my inheritance, my glory, my flesh). David's joy (vv. 9, 11) is expressed in words like "delight" (vv. 3, 6), "pleasant" and "pleasure" (vv. 6, 11), and "glad" (v. 9). David finds his delight only in the Lord and confesses that everything good in his life has come from God. The Psalm begins with these words, “Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust”. David is asking the Lord to “keep him safe”. This doesn't suggest that David was in trouble or danger, as in Psalms 9 and 13. It simply means that he needed God's constant care and oversight so that he might honor the Lord and enjoy all the good things that only God could give him. God alone is good (Matt. 19:17), and apart from Him, we have nothing good. David understands that true peace and security are not found in anything else except the Lord. They are not found in our abilities, in people, in money or weapons, but in God. David says, "In Thee DO I put my trust." This is not something done on the spur of the moment or a last minute decision. It has been a habit in David's life for some time to trust in the Lord. Is it your habit too? Dear friend, true faith does not call upon the Lord when in trouble and then neglects Him when all is OK. True faith is consistent in good times as well as bad. "In Thee do I put my trust or take refuge." We are supposed to do this. Our refuge is to be in the Lord at all times! God bless!

In this episode we have the challenging job of getting our head around the psychology of altered states of consciousness or ‘exceptional human experiences' as today's specialist calls them. Are they mere illusions of the mind? Does their ability to radically change our world view and sense of meaning in the world give them a special status in psychology and mental health? And how do we talk scientifically about significant similarities between such experiences across different times and cultures that appear to imply the existence of an alternative kind of ‘reality' what ever ‘reality' is. Fortunately, to navigate this bag of worms, we have a researcher who has devoted his career to the study of these experiences both psychedelic and other, Dr. David Luke. David Luke is currently a module leader of the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience in Greenwich Universities Psychology and Counselling Department, a course he has been running since 2009. He is also currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer for the Centre for Psychedelic Research, Division of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London. He was President of the Parapsychological Association between 2009 and 2011, and received the Faculty's first Inspirational Teaching Award (2016) from the University of Greenwich. He is a prolific author and editor of books, and today we'll be discussing his 2017 book ‘Otherworlds: Psychedelics and exceptional human experiences' and his new book, a collections of essays he has edited called ‘DMT Entity Encounters: Dialogues on the Spirit Molecule' He is also the co-founder of the Breaking Convention Conference on Psychedelics. During the time of certain powerful men, such as Caesar Augustus, the world’s most powerful was born in a small town, in very humble surroundings. This tells us something very important about how God works and what Jesus came to do. Brian Watson preached this sermon on Christmas Eve, 2021.
This podcast is a compendium of beautiful Catholic Christmas stories, performed by the cast of the British TFP Family Series. Merry Christmas to all my listeners! “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: For this day is born to you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David” (Luke, 2:10-11). “And his name shall be called Emmanuel” (Isaias, 7:14).
'Psychedelics in a changing World: medicalisation, reciprocity and planetary healing' With: Ben Sessa, Gabriel Amezcua, Nick von Christierson, David Luke, Andrea Langlois & Ashleigh Murphy-Beiner. This is a recording of a fascinating panel chaired by Chasing Consciousness in the talks tent of Medicine Festival programmed by Ruby Reed. It included psychologists, psychiatrists, psychedelic entrepreneurs and activists at the top of their field. The panel gave a nuanced and positive overview of the issues associated with the now inevitable medicalisation of these psychedelic compounds. With great sensitivity they approached the very difficult issue of how to honour the roots of this therapy in indigenous shamanism, without reducing it to just money or token indigenous board members. Despite positive predictions for the future it became clear by the end of the talk just how complex the issue of reciprocity is. You can check our interview with Ashleigh Murphy Beiner of the Imperial College team on 'Testing psychedelics for depression' here. Long dismissed as hallucinations, the beings that people see on DMT are attracting more and more scientific interest. These beings, and the ways that they behave, are strikingly similar to those encountered by "alien" abductees, and even biblical prophets. Psychologist Dr David Luke, is a Senior Lecturer studying states of transpersonal consciousness. It is well known that psychedelic drugs can induce altered states of consciousness but is this approach too heavy handed to derive benefit from a transpersonal experience? Activities such as yoga, meditation and sensory deprivation can induce this altered state of consciousness but how can we apply what we have learnt from psychedelic neuropsychopharmacology to evaluate these non-drug induced states? Can religious or spiritual experiences influence an individual's perception of reality? Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich. His research focuses on transpersonal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including ten books, most recently Psychedelic Mysteries of the Feminine (2019). Patreon ~ https://www.patreon.com/wakingcosmos Psychologist David Luke is one of the new generation of psychedelics researchers, based at the University of Greenwich in the UK. One of the things that stands out about David is that while he takes a scientific approach to understanding the potential value of psychedelics, he keeps an open mind to what these experiences bring us into contact with, including what they might reveal about the nature of reality itself. One possibility for David is that psychedelic substances such as DMT override the “reducing valve” function of the brain — opening the floodgates between our ordinary sense of self, and a much greater transpersonal reality. In today's episode of Waking Cosmos (listen below) we talk about David's ideas and research into these substances, including his controversial experiments exploring whether psychedelics can serve as catalysts for psychic phenomena, like precognition and telepathy. To those unfamiliar with the evidence of such “psi” effects, this might seem bizarre, but as a past president of the Parapsychological Association, David is well versed in the significant body of evidence suggestive that these phenomena are real. Why are you a photographer? DAVID: Well, that's very simple. The why is . . . that I want to love on people, I want to have influence in their lives, and I have the excuse of carrying a camera.
