Story 1 — Voyager 1 Powers Down the LECP Instrument • NASA's JPL shut down Voyager 1's Low-energy Charged Particles experiment (LECP) on April 17, 2026, to conserve dwindling power. • The decision followed an unexpected power drop during a routine roll manoeuvre in late February that nearly triggered an automatic emergency shutdown. • Seven of Voyager 1's ten original instrument sets are now offline. Only the magnetometer and plasma wave subsystem remain active. • Engineers are developing 'the Big Bang' — a plan to swap older components with lower-power alternatives — to extend operations into the 2030s. Testing on Voyager 2 is planned for May/June 2026; Voyager 1 to follow no sooner than July. • Source: NASA JPL — https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-shuts-off-instrument-on-voyager-1-to-keep-spacecraft-operating/ Story 2 — Curiosity Rover Finds Organic Molecules on Mars • Published April 21 in Nature Communications, the study describes the first use of the TMAH chemical experiment on another planet. • More than 20 organic molecules were detected in clay-rich sandstone from the Glen Torridon region of Gale Crater, preserved for over 3.5 billion years. • Discoveries include a nitrogen-bearing molecule structurally similar to DNA precursors — never before confirmed on Mars — and benzothiophene. • The experiment cannot determine whether molecules are biological, geological, or meteoritic in origin. Future missions including Rosalind Franklin and Dragonfly will build on the technique. • Source: phys.org — https://phys.org/news/2026-04-mars-rover-compounds.html Story 3 — Black Hole Jets in Cygnus X-1 • Curtin University-led study published April 16 in Nature Astronomy directly measures the instantaneous power of black hole jets for the first time. • The jets in the Cygnus X-1 system carry energy equivalent to 10,000 suns and travel at approximately half the speed of light (150,000 km/s). • Researchers used the companion star's stellar winds to 'bend' the jets, allowing calculation of their real-time power — a technique compared to watching wind deflect a fountain. • About 10% of the energy released as matter falls into the black hole is carried away by the jets — confirming a long-held theoretical assumption. • The measurement will help calibrate future observations from the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, currently under construction in WA. • Source: ScienceDaily — https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/04/260416071949.htm Story 4 — SpaceX 600th Rocket Landing • SpaceX completed its 600th successful Falcon booster landing on April 19, 2026, during the Starlink 17-22 mission from Vandenberg SFB. • Booster B1097 landed on drone ship 'Of Course I Still Love You' for its eighth successful recovery. The milestone arrived just 7 months after the 500th landing. • The tally includes 496 drone ship landings and 104 ground landings, per SpaceX VP Kiko Dontchev. • SpaceX's Starlink constellation now numbers over 10,275 satellites in orbit. • Source: Space.com — https://www.space.com/space-exploration/launches-spacecraft/spacex-starlink-17-22-b1097-vsfb-ofisly-600th-falcon-landing Story 5 — Artemis Spacesuit Crisis • NASA's Office of Inspector General report (released April 20) warns that next-generation Artemis spacesuits may not be ready until 2031 — three years after the stated 2028 target. • The xEVAS programme began as a two-company competition (Axiom Space + Collins Aerospace). Collins has effectively been removed after missing milestones. Axiom is now the sole contractor for the lunar surface suit. • OIG analysis: based on an 8.7-year historical average from contract award to first flight for comparable NASA programmes, Axiom's 2022 award points to a 2031 delivery. • NASA Administrator Isaacman has publicly maintained confidence in the 2028 date. Axiom plans a suit demonstration in 2026 on the ISS or during an Artemis mission. • A separate risk: if the ISS variant of the suit slips past 2030, the Station could run out of operational EVA suits before decommissioning. • Additional Artemis delays: SpaceX lunar Starship at least 2 years late; Blue Origin Blue Moon at least 8 months late (per separate March OIG report). • Source: SpaceDaily — https://spacedaily.com/sd-n-the-spacesuit-gap-why-artemis-iiis-2028-landing-date-is-already-slipping/ Story 6 — Skywatching: Moon & Jupiter Conjunction • Tonight (April 22), the half moon sits approximately 3 degrees from Jupiter in the constellation Gemini, near the stars Castor and Pollux. • Visible to the naked eye in the western/northwestern sky after sunset. Binoculars will reveal Jupiter's four Galilean moons. • Southern Hemisphere viewers: look northwest after dark; viewing window narrows the further south you are. • Source: Space.com — https://www.space.com/stargazing/the-moon-and-jupiter-steal-the-show-after-sunset-on-april-22Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/astronomy-daily-space-news-updates--5648921/support.Sponsor Details:Ensure your online privacy by using NordVPN. Source A jet bent by a stellar wind in the black hole X-ray binary Cygnus X-1S. Listen Now to 004 WTFuture Watch 004 WTFuute Now! Welcome to the wildest, weirdest week so far, where a 4.6 magnitude California earthquake literally shook up our hosts’ “synchronicity filing system,” turning their massive media archive into an obstacle course of decapitated Bambi ornaments and long-lost chakra DVDs. While internet trolls might call them “hoarders beyond borders,” the crew prefers to view the chaos as a brilliant way to uncover buried treasures, proving that sometimes you just need tectonic plates to reorganize your living room. When they aren’t cleaning up broken mirrors or joking about an Aries German and an Aries Russian astrologer physically head butting each other, they are exploring “cosmo energetics” through 50-minute standing meditations to tune into their bodies, or magically conquering Disneyland with a broken foot on a rented mobility scooter. But the future isn’t just about localized tremors; the team also dives deep into the accidental open-sourcing of Anthropic’s AI code, marveling at how new offline AI models can now run directly on an iPhone in airplane mode. This pocket-sized supercomputer basically acts like a Star Trek universal translator without ever needing a Wi-Fi connection. As if rogue offline AI isn’t enough, the hosts decode the cosmos by predicting how Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites could eventually make traditional cell carriers extinct. They also track a barrage of meteor fireballs ostensibly dropped by 3I/ATLAS and investigate a mysterious gigahertz radio flare from the Cygnus X-3 quasar that might just scramble your home router! Between discovering that Earth was formed from local “planetessimals” and saying bon voyage to their friend Michael on his cross-country road trip to Georgia, it’s just another beautifully chaotic week on the podcast. Enjoy!
This week on Rush Rash, Chaz and Schatz celebrate 50 years of 2112 with a very special guest—YouTube sensation and all-around Rush whisperer Mike Massé—who drops in (freshly fumigated from the Haggis Shack) to talk about his gorgeous new cover of “Tears.”The guys dig into Mike's creative process, from Mellotron patch-hunting to channeling Geddy's extra-vibrato-when-you-feel-fancy technique, and why sometimes the internet is both your best friend and a chaotic dumpster fire of “release date truth.” (April 1st? March? WHO KNOWS—ROLL THE BONES.)We also:Spin Mike's stunning rendition of Tears in honor of 2112's 50thDebate the actual release date like proper Rush nerdsTake a wild detour into Beatles territory with Mike's Rubber Soul tribute bandBreak down the Rush reunion performance (yes, THAT one)React in real-time like well behaved Cygnus-X1.Net Facebookers (we get into THAT too)Plus:RushCon plansTouring chaos across the US, Europe, and beyondAnd the eternal question: Can you actually have too much Rush? What is space? What is time? Where did the universe come from? The answers to mankind's most enduring questions may lie in science's greatest enigma: black holes.A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. This can occur when a star approaches the end of its life. Unable to generate enough heat to maintain its outer layers, it shrinks catastrophically down to an infinitely dense point. When this phenomenon was first proposed in 1916, it defied scientific understanding so much that Albert Einstein dismissed it as too ridiculous to be true. But scientists have since proven otherwise. In 1971, Paul Murdin and Louise Webster discovered the first black hole: Cygnus X-1. Later, in the 1990s, astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope found that not only do black holes exist, supermassive black holes lie at the heart of almost every galaxy, including our own. It would take another three decades to confirm this phenomenon. On 10 April 2019, a team of astronomers made history by producing the first image of a black hole.A Crack in Everything: How Black Holes Came in from the Cold and Took Cosmic Centre Stage (Apollo, 2025)is the story of how black holes came in from the cold and took cosmic centre stage. As a journalist, Marcus Chown interviews many of the scientists who made the key discoveries, and, as a former physicist, he translates the most esoteric of science into everyday language. The result is a uniquely engaging page-turner that tells one of the great untold stories in modern science. Learn more about your ad choices.

It would be fascinating to get close to Cygnus X-3. Unfortunately, it also would be deadly. The system is bathed in X-rays and ultraviolet radiation. It features powerful “jets” that blast into space like energy cannons. And it probably has a black hole – a one-way trip to oblivion. Cygnus X-3 is in the swan, which swoops across the eastern sky on these early summer evenings. The system itself is too faint to see. In fact, we can’t see its visible light even with the largest telescopes because it’s hidden behind thick clouds of dust. But we can see it in other wavelengths, including X-rays, gamma rays, and radio waves. Those forms of energy have allowed astronomers to piece together the system’s likely story. Cygnus X-3 probably consists of a black hole plus a brilliant companion. The companion probably is a dozen or more times the Sun’s mass, and a couple of hundred thousand times its brightness. The bright star is blowing huge amounts of gas into space. The black hole grabs some of the gas, which forms a spinning disk around the black hole. Some of the gas is funneled into high-speed jets that fire into space. One of those jets is aimed almost directly at Earth. The brilliant companion star is likely to explode in the next million years or so, with its core collapsing to form another black hole. But the blast might rip the system apart – perhaps causing Cygnus X-3 to fade away. Script by Damond Benningfield
The Space Show welcomed award-winning author and former Caltech radio astronomer Marcus Chown to discuss his latest book, A Crack in Everything: How Black Holes Came in from the Cold and Took Cosmic Center Stage. Chown shared his journey from early inspiration—thanks to a childhood astronomy book and the moon landing—to his current career as a science writer/journalist. He also noted the success of his previous book, The Ascent of Gravity, named the Sunday Times Science Book of the Year.Chown traced the transformation of black holes from theoretical curiosities to essential cosmic players. He described the 1971 discovery of the first black hole in the Cygnus X-1 system and explained how supermassive black holes were surprisingly identified before stellar-mass ones, thanks to observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. He clarified that while black holes themselves emit no light, matter falling into them creates bright emissions.Chown highlighted the overlooked contributions of women in astronomy, especially Louise Webster, co-discoverer of black holes. He emphasized black holes' vital role in galaxy formation and the intriguing theory that their presence may influence the emergence of life.Chown detailed how light elements formed in the Big Bang, while heavier ones like uranium and thorium emerged in supernovae. The 2017 detection of gravitational waves from neutron star mergers revealed the origin of precious metals like gold and platinum, solving a long-standing mystery. He also explained that gamma-ray bursts, once detected by military satellites, are linked to these cataclysmic events. This was in response to a question by Dr. Kothari. In addition, his discussing regarding uranium, thorium, and plutonium helped to explain that only specific isotopes are fissile due to nuclear forces. These elements contribute to Earth's heat and helium production. He praised physicist Lise Meitner, co-discoverer of nuclear fission and developer of the liquid drop model, who was nominated 49 times for the Nobel Prize but never awarded.Chown addressed how James Webb Space Telescope findings—such as unexpectedly bright early galaxies and potential newborn supermassive black holes—challenge current galaxy formation theories. He explored speculative ideas, including advanced civilizations possibly harnessing black hole energy, and the elusive role of dark matter in cosmic structure.I had Marcus if he had any concerns about what may be a U.S. pull back from science and engineering for budgetary reasons. I wanted to know if thought there were other players that might step in and fill the void left by the U.S. were the pull back to happen. Marcus expressed concern over a potential U.S. retreat from scientific leadership, emphasizing the difficulty other nations would face in filling that gap. He reflected on Roy Kerr's 1963 rotating black hole solution, overshadowed at the time by quasar discoveries. Looking ahead, he encouraged continued exploration and proposed future discussions on dark energy.I closed by reminding listeners that The Space Show is a listener-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit and encouraged donations to help sustain the program.Special thanks to our sponsors:Northrup Grumman, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.comThe Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. I introduced Marcus Chown, an award-winning writer and former radio astronomer at Caltech, to discuss his latest book "A Crack in Everything: How Black Holes Came in from the Cold and Took Cosmic Center Stage." Marcus shared his personal journey into astronomy, inspired by his father's gift of an astronomy book and witnessing the moon landing as a child. He discussed the evolution of black hole science, explaining how they were initially considered fictional but became central to understanding the universe. Marcus detailed the discovery of the first black hole in 1971 and its connection to Cygnus X-1, a binary star system where a giant star is being pulled into a black hole, emitting X-rays. He also explained how supermassive black holes were discovered before stellar mass black holes, with the Hubble Space Telescope revealing their prevalence in galaxies. Marcus clarified that light from black holes does not escape from within but is emitted by matter swirling around them before falling in. Much more was discussed during this 77 minute listener and guest discussion.

A giant stellar nursery lies just 4500 light-years away. But the complex of brilliant stars and star-making materials is hidden – veiled by clouds of dust. Cygnus X spans more than 600 light-years. It contains enough material to give birth to millions of stars as massive as the Sun. And it’s already spawned several thousand stars that are many times as massive as the Sun, and thousands of times brighter. Astronomers study the region at wavelengths that shine through the dust. They reveal a complex web of ribbons, bubbles, rings, and pillars. They form several interlinked regions of starbirth. A cluster of massive newborn stars is near the middle of the complex. They produce radiation and powerful “winds” that push and erode the surrounding gas and dust. That can stop the process of star formation. But it can also trigger the birth of new stars as it squeezes the gas and dust. Especially heavy stars blow big bubbles in the gas. They also shape dense regions into pillars that can span dozens of light-years. Cygnus X probably has been forming stars for the past 10 million years or so. But it’s just getting started – it’s likely to form tens of thousands more stars. Cygnus X is in Cygnus, the swan, which is high in the east at nightfall. The complex is hidden behind dark clouds that run from the bright star Deneb, the swan’s tail, to Sadr, at the intersection of its long body and graceful wings. Script by Damond Benningfield
The clock is ticking on T Coronae Borealis which seems primed to undergo a nova explosion this summer. That will make this otherwise faint star as bright as Polaris thanks to a burst of nuclear fusion reactions on the exposed surface of this white dwarf. Another curious binary system, Cygnus X-3, is beaming x-rays toward us thanks to some nifty photon processing in the disk surrounding this black hole. Learn more about these cool systems, parallel universes, dense moons and more with your friendly neighborhood astroquarks.
The ‘origami' superpowers of a single-celled pond hunter, it hunts by launching a neck-like proboscis that can extend more than 30 times its body length. Manu Prakash of Stanford University reveals the amazing mathematical mechanisms of the protist, Lacrymaria olor. Research from Elana Hobkirk at Durham University has found that the process of domestication and selective breeding has limited the ability of domestic dogs to use facial expressions to convey emotions as effectively as their wolf ancestors. Whilst we may be easily manipulated by the ‘puppy eyes' of our pet dogs, they are no longer able to display the same range of emotions that wolves can, who need strong visual communication to maintain their packs. Who discovered the first black hole? Science writer Marcus Chown tells us about the discovery of Cygnus X-1 discovered by Paul Murdin and Louise Webster in 1971. And 100 years ago this week, Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose posted his revolutionary paper to Albert Einstein, which went on to influence quantum mechanics, low-temperature physics, atomic physics, and the physics of the particles that shape the Universe. Physicist Ajoy Ghatak and presenter Roland Pease discuss the story of the man who had the word ‘boson' coined to memorialise him in the late 1920s. Also in the longer podcast version: It's a microbe-eat-microbe world out there, with bacteria waging constant war against each other. It's by dipping into their ever-evolving chemical arsenal that we keep our pharmacies supplied with the antibiotics we use to fight infectious bacteria - and computer biologist Luis Coelho of Queensland University of Technology has turned to genetics and AI to speed up the search for novel compounds. Source What Is the Black Hole Spin in Cyg X-1?Andrzej Zdziarski et al.The Astrophysical Journal Letters, Volume 967, Number 1 (17 may 2024)http://doi.org/10.3847/2041-8213/ad43ed

The "lost episode" returns - Chaz N Schatz spin an epic track off A Farewell To Kings - Cygnus X-1 Book 1 The Voyage. They were so freaked out, they needed to go spend a few minutes hyper-ventilating in the Containment Unit - they came out smelling of haggis and weed! A full-on for this epic Rush track has the guys blah-blah-blah'ing you into coma-tastic brain-damage...this is just one of those tracks you need to listen to on headphones, with your favorite gummies in hand. We're on some conveyance to somewhere, and we've stopped here for one of the best from the entire catalog...hop on, get off, rock it baby! Finally, the Top Secret, Classified and Eyes Only information we've held for so long about what's come to be called the Cygnus X-1, Book 1, The Voyage...Incident is being released through the return of this long-thought-lost-destroyed episode. The "black-hole episode", special for you - Happy Holidays from Rush Rash! As always we go to our song facts and insights from RushVault.com, and pitch another visit to our sponsor, Danforth & Pape, for all your holiday wardrobe upgrade needs. Chaz N Schatz find themselves with another severe case of Rush Rash - this one seemingly as bad if not worse than anything we've seen so far. Drummer and Singer Matt Grou of Quebec's New World Men! The Containment Unit might have still been a little on the rank side after Steve Brown from Moving Pictures UK's last treatment, but Matt put up with the Vegi-Haggis and Poopourri afterglow like the tough French-Canadian he is! Matt is 1/3 of a powerhouse Rush full-frontal, multi-media experience. Full Monty ain't got nothin' on the big swinging these guys bring off every show. Light, cameras, big production and red jumpsuits - these guys are beyond legit in their ability to pull off every era of Rush with masterful precision. Schatz needed to change his shorts twice during the recording, and he refused to use those unnamed male sanitary products, so it made us all Evan a little more uncomfortable...but again, Matt was a trooper. After a truly fascinating discussion of what it takes to play with Peart-ian precision and sing all of Geddy's parts, the wheel doses us with Chemistry from 1982's Signals! We introduce Matt to our sponsor, Danforth & Pape, dive into song facts and insights from RushVault.com, get a little Rush news from Rush Is A Band Blog, and hear some new music from Dirk himself. That, and Chaz actually pronounces Ashwaubenon! There's also a strange update regarding the fate of the "For Eyes Only" incident that's come to be known as The Episode 10. Cygnus X-1, Book 1, The Voyage, Incident. So put on your favorite French accent and try and keep up on an epic music-nerd fest of an episode of Rush Rash. The Scratch List - Scratch Yer Itch - LIVE! Chaz N Schatz find themselves in the presence of the master of the CMPU (Corey Morrissette Podcast Universe) himself, Mr. Corey Morrissette on this Mean Street episode of Rush Rash!! Corey is host of 30 or 40 podcasts on the Deep Dive Podcast Network, and he's a card-carrying Canadian. That said - he's not your typical Canuck, especially when it comes to Rush. He breaks the mold yet again (a fancy way of saying he disproved our well-formed bias that ALL Canadian know and love Rush...) Did he know the song or not...let's put it this way, he was in the walk in clinic looking for add-on services, not the Containment Unit - so you figure it out! In an episode that has us talking everything from Aerosmith to Genesis to Van Fekn Halen to Randy Macho Man punching people in the d#@k...this is a no holds barred episode of Rush Rash. Corey takes us through his entire podcast dynasty: And the Podcast Will Rock, Back Tracks: Theme Music, Back Tracks: Aerosmith Revisited, and The Ultimate Catalog Clash and by the end of the list, there isn't an ounce of sanity left in anyone of us...we do discover his secret as to how he does it, and all we can say is that it's illegal in the U.S. The wheel blesses us with a chart topper - 1989's Show Don't Tell, off Presto! Astronomer Paul Murdin believes a good imagination is vital for scientists, since they're so often dealing with subjects outside the visible realm. Indeed, over a long and successful career his imagination has taken him on a journey through space, discovering various new and unusual celestial occurrences - notably the first successful identification of a black hole, Cygnus X-1. Paul tells Jim Al-Khalili how he spent much of his career at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, working with astronomers around the world on some of the most advanced telescopes ever built. He headed up the Astronomy section of the UK's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, was Director of Science for the British National Space Centre and even has an asteroid named after him. This list of achievements is testament to the fact that Paul has never let his disability hold him back; a leg brace and walking sticks have been part of his life since contracting polio in childhood. But he maintains that as long as you have curiosity and a vibrant imagination, nothing should stand in your way. Hello and welcome to episode 40 of The DJ B-12 Deep Acid House Experience for the month of August 2022. This show contains 61 tracks and has a runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes. This is a very special set containing many oldskool progressive house and trance tracks from between 1990-1997 that inspired and influenced me and my style. A lot of which you have probably heard on some very famous mixes from back in the day. In addition, there are many obscure tracks and a few new tracks that sound old I added into the mix as well. This set was done with only the purest intensions and love for those DJs and artists who came before me. Disclaimer: Parts of this set might sound a bit “inspired by”, it's done as respectfully as possible and mixed and selected by me, I was not purposely trying to copy anyone. Thanks again for joining me this month and enjoy the show.
