Pearl drew inspiration from the works of Douglas Sirk, Technicolor films like The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Mary Poppins (1964), and Disney films. Feel Bad Fall has arrived! Fire up the buggy and roast your finest pig, this week the Brides are recapping the 2022 instant classic, Pearl. Ti West's prequel, famously shot concurrently (and in secret!) to X, is a brilliant examination of slowly creeping psychosis as well as a loving tribute to the melodramatic, Technicolor extravaganzas of the 1930s and 40s. We chat about Mia Goth's absolutely bravura performance, the 1:1 comparisons between this film and The Wizard of Oz, and how this is a film about isolation shot in the middle of Covid. This movie is beautiful and horrifying, particularly in how it examines the way you can be scared of your own mind. Also, the accent work? Chef's kiss. TW: Pearl contains discussion of a lost pregnancy. Pearl, 2022. Directed by Ti West. Written by Ti West and Mia Goth. Starring Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro.
New reports suggest filmgoers are less interested in sex scenes than ever. Data shows there has been a 40 percent drop in sexual content in major Hollywood movies than there was at the start of the millennium. Founder of Intimacy Co-ordinators Aotearoa Tandi Wright says societal changes have led to audiences reconsidering intimate scenes in films. "The conversations that followed #MeToo, which was from 2017 onwards, I think, led to a broader kind of examination of the intimate content - and how that was being made." Do you have what it takes to be a staurrrr? We're ready to be discovered here at Spooky Tuesday — and so is a certain little farm girl who knows how to dream big and smile even bigger. No one loves her more than herself, though, and that's what makes Pearl (2022) the perfect pick for Obsession Month. On our newest episode, we're talking about the X (2022) prequel, a project that was born when a character study spiraled out of control. With its bright colors, iconic quotes, and protagonist who knows that sometimes you need to crack a few alligator eggs to make an omelette, this flick became an instant classic in its own right, and now it's her turn to step into the limelight. In early 2022, the Ti West film, X, was released to rave reviews. With its grindhouse experience, and throwback feel, the move brought horror and midnight movie fans back to the old 42nd Street theaters that used to pocket New York City and Times Square. To the surprise of many, a follow up film, that was filmed at the same time as X was announced entitled PEARL (2022).Pearl, the antagonist of X (2022), played by Mia Goth, has her origin story now. The film is about Pearl's life on her immigrant German family's farm. We see that Pearl is wishing to escape and be in movies. But unfortunately her life as a teenager is violent and unstable as we see her do things that normal teenagers would never do.PEARL stars Mia Goth in what some say is a career defining performance. Also starring are Emma Jenkins-Purro, Tandi Wright, Matthews Sunderland, among others. Filmed for the relatively low price of $1M USD, the movie went on to make ten times the box office. Rated as highly as its predecessor by critics, your co-hosts now take a look at this little film and give their thoughts.

Maddie and Colleen join Caitlin for Ti West's second release of 2022: Pearl. We go off the rails early on in this one. Tangents include: Dave Matthews Band, head lice, and cotillion, among others. The review starts around minute 19, and we get into themes of sexuality, monstrous motherhood, and how Pearl may be a new iconic monstrous femme figure in the horror repertoire. Our concensus: although we'd change a few things, Pearl is better than X! We look forward to the third installment - MaXXXine. Alternate titles I considered for this episode (based on our conversation) were: Pearl: Teamwork Makes the 69 Work, and Pearl: Perpetual Milkmaid Face.
Mia Goth has been quietly amassing one of the most exciting filmographies out there for the last 10 years. Until now, that is. She's delivered standout supporting performances in films like The Survivalist, A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria, and more, but Ti West is the first to fully embrace the powerhouse she is and send her star soaring in a big way by releasing not one but two features in a single calendar year with Goth as the headliner, X back in March and now the prequel film, Pearl.Even after having worked with some of the most iconic directors in the industry like Lars von Trier, Gore Verbinski, and Luca Guadagnino, it wasn't until X that Goth finally got her first lead role in a feature film. One film quickly, or rather immediately, became two when inspiration struck and West got the OK from A24 to film not one, but two movies within the same series. First up would be X in which Goth starred as Maxine, a young woman with big dreams, and also as Pearl, an older woman struggling to cope with the fact that the opportunity to seize her own dreams is long gone. After filming that 1970s-set film, it was back to 1918 to create Pearl's origin story.A young Pearl is desperate to become a star, but her current circumstances make it very difficult for her to go after what she wants most. While her husband (Alistair Sewell) is off fighting in the war, Pearl is stuck at home caring for her catatonic father (Matthew Sunderland) and doing chores around the farm to appease her extremely strict and stern mother (Tandi Wright) who has absolutely no time for Pearl's ambitions. Before long, Pearl's mounting frustration with her situation and ache to become a star spark violent outbursts that tease the women she's become in X.While in Toronto celebrating the North American premiere of Pearl at TIFF 2022, Goth took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit her journey from modeling as a teenager to becoming an actor who consistently picks riveting, bold, and truly unforgettable projects to work on. Nude Tuesday is a brand new 5-star comedy from Armagan Ballantyne and Jackie van Beek about a suburban couple who go to a new-age retreat as a last ditch attempt to save their marriage. Their path to reconnection is riddled with hilarity and humiliation as they seek to find themselves and each other. In this episode of the podcast, we're diving a little deeper on the behind the scenes part of the movie and talking to two people who were crucial to setting up the made up language and the nudity. Dialect coach Perry Piercy is an award-winning actor and director who has travelled the world instructing actors and presenters operating at the highest level on how they can use their voice most effectively. Perry constructed the rules for the made up language in Nude Tuesday and trained the actors on how to improvise within a dialect that doesn't actually exist. Tandi Wright is a kiwi screen icon known for her appearances on Shortland Street, Nothing Trivial, 800 Words and recently, the black comedy sci-fi Creamerie. Tandi was Nude Tuesday's intimacy co-ordinator, getting everyone ready for the actors to bare all on the big screen. The Nude Tuesday podcast was brought to you by Film Queenstown Lakes, and New Zealand and Australian distributors, Madman Entertainment.
