2,000 families in New York City will now receive free childcare. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced today that the city will cover all out-of-pocket costs for families who already receive subsidized care through the Child Care Assistance Program and pay a sliding-scale fee. This is projected to cost the city $5.2 million in the first year. New York City High schoolers now have a chance to see more broadway shows. Mayor Mamdani is giving out more than 2,000 broadway tickets through a lottery system. WFUV's Giuliana Guarracino with more. New York City has welcomed people from all over the world this summer. But for the next few days, they'll be welcoming something else… puppets. This week, your favorite former puppeteers blast off to the Tau Ceti system to talk about the true breakout star of Project Hail Mary—the lovable, five-legged alien engineer known simply as Rocky.In an age when Hollywood can render just about anything with a mouse click, the filmmakers made a delightfully old-school decision: they put a puppet on set. Working with creature effects legend Neil Scanlan's team, a squad of puppeteers led by James Ortiz brought Rocky to life through a combination of practical puppetry, animatronics, and visual effects, giving Ryan Gosling a real scene partner instead of a tennis ball on a stick. The result is an alien who somehow has no face... and yet delivers one of the most emotionally expressive performances of the year. We'll dive into the remarkable engineering behind Rocky's performance, from the multiple puppet builds created for different scenes to the team of puppeteers—affectionately nicknamed the "Rocketeers"—who coordinated every tilt, tap, and triumphant "Amaze!" Once in a blue moon, we find a song that is so wild and weird, it becomes a brick in the ever-growing metaphorical mansion that is In The Past ... and it's usually by a group of young African-American women from the 1950s (see: "Pork and Gravy" by The De-Lo's; "Chic-A-Boomer" by The Del-Rhythmettes; and "Rock-and-Ree-Ah-Zole" - to name just one - by The Bobbettes.) This year, it's the incredible "Kill It!" by The Antwinetts. One of the craziest put-down songs you'll ever hear, and you need to hear it!  Don't think our other selections are slouches, though: we next shine the spotlight on Shari Sheeley, who co-wrote "Something' Else" for her beau Eddie Cochran in 1959. Barry Mann & Cynthia Weilwrote the very dramatic "Chico's Girl," which eventually was covered by the aptly-named Girls (aka The Sandoval Sisters). Attitudes around social media are changing. A Pew Research study found that about half of teens surveyed in 2024 felt that social media had a mostly negative impact on their age group. A group advocating a more considered relationship to tech held what they called a Summer of Ludd Festival, named after the Industrial Revolution era workers movement, the Luddites. The festival in New York City featured tech-free activities ranging from meditation to a workshop on how to flirt in real life. But in 2026, is it really possible to live without the tech we've become so addicted to? This, however hasn't affected Capstan and so this water community has kept good relations with the companies, supplying many of the shipping vessels for them.
