On January 12, 2023, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Robert Hur '91 to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into President Biden's alleged mishandling of classified documents during his time as vice president—thrusting Rob into the national political spotlight. In this episode, Rob tells his story. The child of Korean immigrants, Rob's family settled in Southern California in the 1980s, where Rob attended Harvard School. Rob later discovered a passion for the law, and in 2018 he was named the US Attorney for the district of Maryland, where he led major investigations relating to violent crime, public corruption, and white supremacist-inspired domestic terrorism. All of this prepared Rob for this moment, testifying before a divided congress on March 12, and concluding an inquiry that Rob believes was fair and just. Rob references Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and FBI Director Christopher Wray, as well as Harvard School educators John Amato, Bob Archer, Tom Donahue, Mimi Flood, and Phil Holmes, as profound life influences.

"Sailing Through Sounds: JRad's Revelations & Dylan Surprises"Larry Mishkin    discusses  JRad (Joe Russo's Almost Dead)  December 1st concert  at the Riviera nightclub in Chicago. He talks about the band's unique covers, including Grateful Dead songs, and their ability to recreate the sound of the original artists. He highlight the performance of "Foolish Heart" during a previous show, describing its musical construction and its significance in the Grateful Dead's live repertoire.Delving into the band members' backgrounds, emphasizing their musical talents and contributions to JRad. It provides detailed information about each member's musical history and collaborations, discussing Joe Russo's drumming, Marco Benevento's keyboards, Dave Drywitz's bass, Tom Hamilton's guitar, and Scott Metzger's diverse musical styles. He also reviews JRad's surprise performances, such as their rendition of Bob Dylan's "Tell Me Mama," a song exclusively performed during Dylan's 1966 world tour. Larry expresses surprise at how JRad, despite being younger and not following Dylan in 1966, managed to perform the song so well.Additionally, he briefly touches on the issue of marijuana prohibition on cruise ships, by criticizing the strict enforcement against cannabis use, considering the changing attitudes toward marijuana. The discussion also touches upon ticket availability for concerts by bands like Phish and rumors surrounding potential performances..Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast JRADDecember 1, 2023The Riviera NightclubChicagoJoe Russo's Almost Dead Live at The Riviera on 2023-12-01 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Episode title:      JRAD Rocks The Riv in Chicago on 12.1.2023: channel Dylan and Dire Straits                                Happy Birthday Keith Richards (80!) INTRO:                  Foolish Heart                                Track #3                                5:45 – 7:17  SHOW No. 1:      Tell Me, Momma                                Track #4                                0:57 – 2:33 Tell Me, Momma is a song written by Bob Dylan and performed exclusively during his 1966 World Tour with the Band (then known as the Hawks). He studied at the Dartford Technical School and Sidcup Art College. After graduating, Richards befriended Jagger, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Brian Jones and joined the Rolling Stones. As a member of the Rolling Stones, Richards also sings lead on some Stones songs. Richards typically sings lead on at least one song a concert, including "Happy", "Before They Make Me Run", and "Connection". Outside of his career with the Rolling Stones, Richards has also played with his own side-project, The X-Pensive Winos. He also appeared in three Pirates of the Caribbean films as Captain Teague, father of Jack Sparrow, whose look and characterisation was inspired by Richards himself. In 1989, Richards was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2004 into the UK Music Hall of Fame with the Rolling Stones. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him fourth on its list of 100 best guitarists in 2011. In 2023, Rolling Stone's ranking was 15th.[1] The magazine lists fourteen songs that Richards wrote with Jagger on its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list.My favorite “Keith tune” in the Stone's songbook.  1978 version. "Before They Make Me Run" is a song by English rock band the Rolling Stones, featured on their 1978 album Some Girls.English musician, songwriter, singer and recording producer who is an original member, guitarist, secondary vocalist, and co-principal songwriter of the Rolling Stones. His songwriting partnership with the band's lead vocalist Mick Jagger is one of the most successful in history. His career spans over six decades, and his guitar playing style has been a trademark of the Rolling Stones throughout the band's career. Richards gained press notoriety for his romantic involvements and illicit drug use, and he was often portrayed as a countercultural figure.Written by guitaristKeith Richards, the song is a response to his arrest for heroin possession in Toronto in February 1977. The criminal charges and prospect of a prison sentence loomed over the Some Girls recording sessions and endangered the future of the Rolling Stones.[2]In the lyrics, Richards reflects unapologetically on his lifestyle up to that point. The line "it's another goodbye to another good friend" in the first verse can be interpreted as referring to Gram Parsons, Richards's close friend who died in 1973 from a drug overdose,[3] and/or to heroin itself: Richards had sought medical treatment for heroin addiction following his arrest in Toronto, and his resolution to overcome his addiction would be a significant factor in his upcoming trial.[4]Richards recorded the song in five days without sleeping.[5] Originally entitled "Rotten Roll", the song was recorded in a Paris studio in March 1978 during one of Mick Jagger's absences from the Some Girls sessions.[6] The completed track, "a high-energy rock & roller",[7] features Richards on lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, and bass; Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, slide guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Watts on drums; and Jagger on backing vocals.Richards first performed the song in concert on the New Barbarians' tour of North America in 1979; it was not until the Steel Wheels Tour in 1989 that it entered the Rolling Stones' concert repertoireSHOW No. 4:                      Romeo and Juliet                                                Track #13                                                1:54 – 3:21 "Romeo and Juliet" is a rock[1][4][5] song by the British rock band Dire Straits, written by frontman Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the 1980 album Making Movies and was released as a single in 1981.[6] The song subsequently appeared on the Dire Straits live albums Alchemy and On the Night, and later on Knopfler's live duet album with Emmylou Harris, Real Live Roadrunning (though Harris does not perform on the track). The song itself, written by Knopfler, was inspired by his failed romance with Holly Vincent, lead singer of the short-lived band Holly and the Italians. The song speaks of a Romeo who is still very much in love with his Juliet, but she now treats him like "just another one of [her] deals". Knopfler has both stated and implied that he believes Vincent was using him to boost her career. The song's line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," refers to an interview with Vincent, where she says "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up.  OUTRO:                                Hard To Handle                                                Track #17                                                5:00 – 6:45 Otis Redding recorded Hard to Handle in late 1967, shortly before his death. It was released as a single in June 1968. By 1969, it was being covered by a number of people, and surprisingly, the Dead seem to have been one of the first. If anyone were to think of the least likely groups in ‘69 to cover some funky new R&B, the Dead would probably be on that list. They hadn't shown any interest in picking up new R&B covers since mid-1967, when they started doing Lovelight – since then, they had focused on their original ‘acid-rock' material. Many old covers dropped out of their setlists, and from summer '68 through winter '69, their shows were almost exclusively devoted to Anthem & Live/Dead suite material, with a few new Aoxomoxoa songs dropped in.But by March 1969, they seem to have felt the need for something new – the Live/Dead album was in the can, and their repertoire had not varied much in months. Aside from a couple sluggish, misbegotten renditions of Hey Jude that winter, Hard to Handle was their first new cover song in over a year. Over the course of the spring, they would gradually bring in more cover tunes, bringing back many songs they had stopped playing in previous years, and the shows would start to reflect a wider set of influences.Pigpen probably emulated Otis, and of course this song would have matched his strutting stage persona; it may have been his idea to cover it. The Dead must have known they could not recapture the tight, snappy Stax horn sound of Redding's original, and they didn't even try. Instead they adapted it to their loud, heavy, lumbering two-drum, two-guitar style – of course adding a big guitar solo. Pigpen had a set way of singing the song from the start, closely following Redding's phrasing, which would vary little over the next couple years; but the band would go through some dramatic changes in the way they played the song. (The next year, a bit lighter on their feet, they would also attempt James Brown's ‘Man's World' – not one of his funkiest efforts – but would only play it for about five months.) The Dead had long been fans of Otis Redding – in 1966-67, Pigpen was performing his ‘63 song ‘Pain in My Heart.' (Though the impetus to cover it may have come from the Rolling Stones' version.)Redding came to the Fillmore in December '66 – musicians were clamoring to Bill Graham that he needed to book Otis. When he came, according to Graham, “Every artist in the city asked to open for Otis. The first night, it was the Grateful Dead. Janis Joplin came at three in the afternoon the day of the first show to make sure that she'd be in front… Every musician then into music came.” *The Dead opened for Redding on 12/20/66; the next two nights, other bands opened. (The Dead went to play in Santa Clara.) Bill Graham was permanently impressed: “By far, Otis Redding was the single most extraordinary talent I had ever seen. There was no comparison, then or now... That was the best gig I ever put on in my entire life.” * Janis also mentioned that Otis was a particular inspiration to her. (I believe Ralph Gleason also wrote a review of one of the shows for the Chronicle, which I'd like to see.)When Garcia & Lesh appeared on Tom Donahue's FM show in April '67, they played Otis' cover of ‘Day Tripper' and reminisced about the show. Otis had an 18-piece band with him, and Garcia recalled that Otis did his standard show, “where the band would get up and play some numbers, and a girl singer would come up” and warm up the audience before Otis appeared.Lesh: “It was kind of scary to work with Otis… He tore it up!”Garcia: “Otis is really heavy… He tore the place apart… When he came on stage, it was like the whole place got about six times as big, and the band just got real snappy – it was so fine, and the music was really good.” The Dead debuted Hard to Handle at the Black & White Ball (Hilton Hotel, S.F.) , 3/15/69 – the very first song of the show! In their eagerness to tackle it, they perhaps neglected to rehearse it a few more times… They have trouble keeping together in the precise arrangement, and sometimes stumble around erratically before syncing up again. Garcia plays swooping slide throughout, but seems to have little idea what to do with it, so there's not much of a solo and they just sort of stagger forward aimlessly for a while. Pigpen is also a little confused about the verses. At the end the band thinks Pigpen's finished, but he continues with another verse, so they bring it to an abrupt end. Last played on December 31, 1982 at the Oakland Civic Auditorium.  Played it a total of 120 times.   Other stories:Cruise Ships have a very strict NO CANNABIS rule.  That sucksPhish tix for the Sphere are out. "We Camet to the Conclusion" By David Lindley In those days (Mid/Late 1960's) there was free form radio, Tom Donahue. You would hear George Jones, Ravi Shankar, and Jean Luc Ponty, and then some more George Jones. It was that way on purpose, which was a statement, a really eloquent statement which is, ‘Music is pretty much the same, for the same reasons.’ It showed everybody that all these people were going through pretty much the same thing. It's all valid.... Anything that sounded good to me, I would go after. I heard Sabicus play Flamenco and that was a huge moment. I said, “I want to do that. I'll try some of that out.” Then I realized I would have needed to start out when I was 17 years old to learn all that complex traditional Flamenco. I was listening to Ravi Shankar and classical North Indian music; I loved all that stuff. It was during that period that The Beatles came out of all of that stuff. To me they sounded like folkies except plugged in. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is like The Louvin Brothers, Jim and Jesse, and The Virginia Boys. It all sounded so familiar; it's okay to plug in. That's what happened. Jerry Garcia and I had a conversation about this one time, and we came to the conclusion that it was pretty much the same thing. He approached The Grateful Dead stuff as a bluegrass musician. That approach was familiar to me, ‘cause that's the one I use, plus a bunch of other stuff." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

The “Jerry Area” We introduced Hippies to granola at Woodstock. They had never seen it before, and we brought it to them in little Dixie cups. It was unheard of. Some people had heard of Muesli, but barely. We made the granola in our free kitchen Tom Donahue, the father of FM radio, was putting together this sequel to Woodstock, Medicine Ball Caravan. Warner Brothers was desperate to do a sequel to Woodstock. The idea was to have a caravan of buses driving across the free world and stopping hither and yon to do concerts. Warner Brothers would fly in their stars to do that. That’s how I ran into Larry Brilliant and was hired to be one of the doctors on the trip. He jumped on the bus with his wife Girija, and he was Dr. America. Seva is such a beautiful cause. To be able to go to the other side of the world and enable people that are blind to not bump into sh*t anymore. You get psyched! What a gift. It was so easy to pitch artists for this particular cause, because it is so self-evident, and we have helped five million people on the other side of the world. I make calls to artists, and they find it very difficult to say no to me. My first task when Seva was first put together: We were given a small grant from Steve Jobs to gather in Heartlands, MI—Larry and a lot of docs and health workers and Danny Rifkin from The Grateful Dead—to do something. I went to Detroit to get on an aircraft, and who should be on that plane but the Grateful Dead and they didn’t have parachutes. I went to the drummers first and Jerry always says, ‘Might as well.” Bill Graham didn’t know we were putting on the show and it was a benefit. He was screaming, “Why am I the last one to find this stuff out?!” I was backstage in the “Jerry Area” with Steve Parrish and we were exploring some vegetation. Bill came back and handed me this note. I opened it up and it was a check for $10,000. I said, “My God, Bill, why are you doing this?” He said, “Because you did not hit on me, my friend.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Robert Davi is a singer-extraordinaire. This interview was taped back in 2014 and broadcast on the radio and was published in La Revista, a bilingual international magazine. The interview focused in part on his 2011 debut studio album "Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance" produced by the legendary Phil Ramone. Of course many know him for the versatile actor that he is, but in my heart and mind I think of him as a singer first. However, Robert Davi is a man of many interests. His columns on political subjects and current events have appeared in online and print news publications. He's not afraid to share his point of view. He's also shared his commentary on the AM and FM airwaves as a radio talk show host. Everone thinks of a different movie when they recall one of the more than 130 films he has starred in ranging from The Goonies, Die Hard, Predator 2, Licence to Kill and Showgirls just to name a few. He was also featured as a main character in the music video of Bob Dylan's take on "The Night We Called It a Day" a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. Most recently, Robert Davi has been in the news because of the release of the documentary film Davi's Way. Directed by Tom Donahue, the film chronicles Davi's quest to honor and recreate Frank Sinatra's October 13, 1974 "Main Event" concert at Madison Square Garden. This interview with Robert Davi is being presented on the podcast as a good foundation for listeners of who the man himself is. Don't touch that dial, Robert Davi is next and it's only on The Paul Leslie Hour. Support The Paul Leslie Hour by donating to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/the-paul-leslie-hour

Chuck Harder Talk Radio Pioneer and Legendary Host of For The People has died at Age 74, April 10, 2018. Tribute by Tom Donahue. Upon learning of Chuck Harder’s passing with little fanfare within the radio industry, I decided to do something about it. Chuck was born in Elgin, Illinois and began his radio career as a DJ in the 60’s in Chicago. Chuck Harder had an illustrious radio broadcast career that’s spanned decades. Harder had been a prominent radio DJ, talk show host, creator and founder of radio stations, talk radio networks, satellite systems, cable TV and newspaper projects. Chuck worked as a talk host in New York City (WMCA), Tampa (WFLA) radio and other markets, eventually leading to national syndication in 1987. Harder was on the forefront of broadcast evolution, forging new paths. He started the Sun Radio Network and the For The People radio program and organization, based in Tampa, Florida. Following a fallout with his new network business partners, he went on to form a new radio network The Peoples Radio Network, relocating to the Telford Hotel in White Springs, Florida. Harder’s For The People radio show was heard on more than 300 radio stations at its peak and shortwave radio. Chuck was beloved by a large loyal following and his show was hugely popular and made a profound difference in their lives. Chuck Harder’s program, with the exception of Rush Limbaugh’s show, was the most listened to syndicated show in prime daytime. Harder’s show and network supplied and sustained so many small market independently owned stations. Chuck’s show was also carried by some big time stations in major markets. Later his show and network struggled to survive with the onslaught of mega-media corporate consolidation. He had a golden radio voice and was a complete natural on-air broadcaster. If any radio talent and consummate broadcaster deserves a place in the Radio Hall of Fame, it is Chuck Harder! Harder was not a political partisan, rather an independent populist, a protectionist, pro-America nationalist, who leaned left, yet, his politics were of, for and by the people. Chuck was a consumer advocate who looked out for the little guy and the average American. He gave voice to the voiceless, offered common sense for the common man. He cared about our country and its people. Harder had his tax exempt 501(C)3 status scrutinized and investigated by the IRS and Justice department for primarily political purposes. He endured an 18 year harassing and intrusive audit. Chuck was a harsh critic of both the Bush and Clinton regimes and more favorably supportive of Ross Perot, Reform Party and other lesser known political parties and persons. Chuck Harder was a fair-trade protectionist who waged the trade resistance war vs NAFTA/GATT globalist agendas. Chuck fought for the average American Worker and for bringing back better paying manufacturing jobs. Build and Buy American! He opposed outsourcing and exporting of jobs, plant closings and foreign relocations, competing unfairly with cheap foreign labor and the influx of illegals and the lack of secure borders. He investigated and challenged the power elite structure and status quo in big business, big media, and big government. Chuck covered: consumer affairs, current events, trade and tax policies, fair vs free trade, political news, mega-monopolies, corruption, conspiracies and cover-ups, nationalism vs globalism, interventionist wars and foreign entanglements, alternative media and free press, NASA and UFO’s and much more. His show had a eclectic mix of commentary, callers, news, and guests. His signature brand show, theme music and bumpers, his newspaper, unique product offerings and his historic broadcast setting made for a most memorable experience. For The People and Peoples Radio Network represented an alternative media vs the mainstream monopoly media. Without a Chuck Harder or Pat Buchanan paving the way; along with Ross Perot and later Michael Savage there is No Trump campaign or presidency! Chuck deserves credit for his many contributions to informing and awakening America. Strangely, Chuck Harder and Art Bell died within a few days of each other in April, 2018. Both were arguably the biggest and most impactful talk radio stars of their genres in the 1990’s and with the exception of Rush Limbaugh, ruled the talk radio landscape! They were both fiercely independent and alternative in their unique approaches. Chuck Harder’s likely regrets might be his failings and mishandling of some of his business dealings with partners that cost him his various operations. Kayla, Liberty Lobby (Sun Radio Network), United Auto Workers (Peoples Radio Network, United Broadcast Network). Not prepared to battle the corporate consolidation and hostile takeover of broadcast media. Despite, these setbacks, Chuck remained on-the-air with his message and mission “For The People”. He later would broadcast his show via Talk America Radio Network, then started TalkStar Radio Network and online streaming and satellite. More recent For The People radio show podcast with co-host Keith Alan, who now continues on in the tradition of Chuck Harder. Harder was beset for years with health ailments that included weight struggles, leg and heart problems and finally a severe stomach disorder. Chuck died of health related complications. He had been confined to a nursing home in Gainesville, Florida. He faced extreme health and financial challenges lifelong and persevered. Chuck was bigger than life literally and figuratively. Full disclosure: I was the talk host who replaced Chuck Harder’s show on The Sun Radio Network back in April, 1991. We competed in the afternoons for many months before my joining Chuck’s Peoples Radio Network, in White Springs, Florida for nearly two years. Due to the controversial nature of both of our talk shows we had deep state government surveillance and interference that caused Harder concerns and his severing the ties with my show airing on his network. I was deeply disappointed and had to regroup and concentrate on seeking a new syndicating network to serve my affiliate stations and loyal listener base. Fortunately, I rebounded with BRN and later with Talk America Radio Network. If it hadn’t been for Chuck’s departure from Sun Radio Network I may not have ever experienced holding down a nationally syndicated talk show on this high level. Then to later join Chuck at his new network. In fact, for a few months I resided at the remote, historic Telford Hotel and broadcast center, before moving to Jacksonville. I feel a great debt of gratitude for the influence that Chuck Harder had on me and my career. The interesting intersection of our lives and careers was uncanny. He was one of the all-time greats! A legendary broadcast talent and media force who made his mark. It is my hope that Chuck Harder garners the radio broadcast respect and recognition long earned and well deserved and sometime soon is honored for his meaningful work in the Radio Hall of Fame. By Tom Donahue host of America’s Town Forum in the 1990’s.
