This week multi award-winning writer/comic/actor Aisling Bea joins Jarlath to discuss her meteoric rise to the top of the comedy industry. Today she is known for her stand out performances on Live At The Apollo, QI, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Dead Boss, Trollied and The Delivery Man but in this candid conversation she tells Jar about the many failures that she believes paved the way. It's a hilarious and heartbreaking journey from the Curragh of Kildare to studying performing arts at LAMDA, the days spent broke handing out flyers on the streets of London to winning the So You Think You're Funny newcomer award that would send her career to a whole new level. Most people get into comedy to avoid work but Aisling discusses living a life of all work and no hobbies and the constant pressure of trying to grow her earliest creative work in the glare of the public eye. She gave you the finger, you took her to dinner, and you made her laugh. Its time to respectthe painfully derailed second solo career of Geraldine Estelle Halliwell.--------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome back to Pod of the Pops.Just like an apple, cut down the middle, she only has one matching half…….. If you don’tknow the lyrics I’m referencing then THIS podcast is going to be an EYEOPENER for you. The second Geri Halliwell career is really a long road of threats to release an album. She hits more road bumps than Rita Ora.Start the podcast in true Geri style….. an interview in The Guardian where she denouncesherself as a feminist: “For me, feminism is bra-burning lesbianism. It's very unglamorous...Weneed to see a celebration of our femininity and softness”Constantly comes back to her not knowing what her greatest assets are. I used to pictureher as a great speaker, politically engaging but actually – she is a monkey at a typewriter. If you type a thousand scripts, eventually one will say SpiceWorld. Example: I'm learning every day as a mother. I'm learning that she's like a flowerthat thrives when it gets sunlight, and the sunlight is confidence, and I feel thatwhen I'm confident it gives her self-esteem. And that gives me motivation to go onand be the best.……I, I, I, i…. iSpice On 12 April 2007, it was announced that Halliwell had signed a six-book deal with MacmillanChildrens Books. The books follow the adventures of nine-year-old Ugenia, a character basedon Halliwell, alongside her friends Bronte, Rudy, and Trevor. Each title feature a newsletter from Ugenia highlighting lessons she has learned, along withquizzes, riddles and crosswords, and available in an audio book edition read by Halliwell. Geri described it as “The rebith of girl power. Handing on the baton through a different medium.(If she has handed on the baton it would explain the next 7 years)There were rumours Geri had based one of the characters, Princess Posh Vattoria on her fellowbandmate, Mrs Victoria Beckham. Another character is called David Bockham. Not the mostcunning disguise, it is. She loves an obvious dance move; she loves an obvious character name. She appeared in early drafts but removed. According to the official site, the book sold more than 250,000 copies in its first 5 months, makingHalliwell 2008s most successful female celebrity childrens author. In September 2009, Halliwell, in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador of UNFPA, visited Nepal tohelp launch a national campaign to stop violence against womenIn 2009, she also makes a movie cameo. In the Jason Statham action comedy, Crank: HighVoltage. It’s a sequel in which Chev Chelios must electrocute himself regularly to stay alive –whilst a group of assassins take out hits on his life.Geri appears in a flashback; as the role of Jason Stathams mother. (I am assuming they usedthe scene from SpiceWorld where they play mothers as their inspiration). Clip. Clip. Now – I know this is just a bit of fun BUT can we discuss, for a moment, the role Geri playedin early feminism. And the irony then, that in 2009 she would appear in a film the Guardianaccussed of “extreme misogyny and racism” and “although nothing should be off limits incomedy” it amounts to “flashy, arrogant, emptiness”. Now, I haven’t seen 2010 had the makings of a big year for Geri. She has put wheels in motion; Scream if youwanna go faster. We start getting a lot of “Geri is coming back to music”. This is 5 years afterher last album (2005 Passion).March: Vocal coach Carrie Grant, famous as one half of the husband-wife team that coachedcontestants on reality TV show Fame Academy is being interviewed on The Alan Titchmarshshow (all big names) and she says Geri is working on a return to music. We also cover:- Her episode of Piers Morgans: Life Stories- Fashion Spice: she releases 3 collections with Next. A beach wear collection, a red carpet ready gown collection and a very patriotic Olympics range- Judge Spice: X factor UK and Australias got talent- Her foray into sitcom, with Trollied and the pilot of her own show, Life Sucks. - Her wedding to Christian Horner. With only one Spice Girl in attendance - "Other half of me" her Australian only single with some, ummm, questionable dance moves and lyrics- Her leaked country album, Man on the Mountain- Presenter Spice, hosting the One Show and her own driving show: My Drive to Freedom - George Michael charity single, Angels in chains, raising money for Childline - BBC talent show, All Together Now. Where Geri is blostered by 99 other panelists.
Bafta winning, potty mouthed, comedy wizard Ash Atalla (The Office, IT Crowd, People Just Do Nothing, Trollied) is this week's chatmonger. He moans a bit about the lonely life of a producer as well as talking about his numerous awards. He gives some bona fide good advice about producing top drawer comedy which is his speciality. His anxiety about clutter and what people think about him is a particular highlight. Leon breathes quite heavily throughout and Chris is a bit of a prick... apparently.
For several days the island has been battered by a powerful storm causing all manner of debris to wash up on the beach including British actor, writer and producer Nick Blood. Nick is well known for his roll of Lance Hunter in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Before he hit Hollywood, Nick had a string of roles on UK TV, including Trollied, Misfits, Him & Her and the police satire Babylon. Nick is no stranger to Theatre. He made his professional stage debut in The Priory as Adam, at the Royal Court Theatre. He went on to perform as Sordido in the modern adaptation of the Jacobean tragedy Women Beware Women at The National Theatre. In 2011, he appeared in Backbeat which told the story of the formation and early years of The Beatles. With a string of feature films in development and in production right now it’s clear Nick’s agent will be keen to rescue him from the Island as soon as possible (insert Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D joke here) Until then…. lets talk about crisps baby. This week on Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how a guy named Mike up in northern Wisconsin back in 1964 was out scouting an area to do some future camping when he saw a small bear. It turns out it was no bear, it was a baby Sasquatch. Then, the strange sightings of some unknown winged beast continues in and near the city of Chicago, this time in Forest Park. According to the eye witness, it was seen with glowing red eyes and began flapping it's wings as it ascended. After the break the guys have on Danny Robins from the "Haunted" Podcast. Danny is an experienced comedy writer. He created the hugely successful BAFTA-nominated and RTS Award-winning BBC series Young Dracula, the cult BBC 2 seriesWe Are History and BBC1 Comedy Playhouse sitcom Monks. He has worked on a host of other shows, most recently writing on Series 2 of Comedy Central sitcom I Live With Models, Sky 1's Trollied and BBC3's upcoming A Brief History of Tim. He co-created the hit sitcom Rudy's Rare Records with Sir Lenny Henry, writing four series of it for BBC Radio 4 and a recent TV pilot for BBC1. He is a Radio Award winner, who has created several successful BBC Radio 4 series, including The Museum of Everything, Paperback Hell and Danny Robins Music Therapy. Currently, he has created, written and appeared in new sitcom The Cold Swedish Winter (“A sweet Richard Curtis-ish delight: the kind of thing you could imagine transferring effortlessly to TV” – The Guardian). His stage play of Rudy's Rare Records for Birmingham Rep and Hackney Empire was a critically-lauded sell out success (“A stonking hit” – The Guardian). He is currently writing a new play for a major West End producer. He has also presented various programmes for TV and Radio, including Let's Make a Baby for BBC 3's Mischief strand, The Bullsh*t Detective, BBC2's The Culture Show and Newsnight's election coverage.
