Joining the team today is someone who despite an early start on the wrong side of the tracks, makes one hell of a detective. As you'll hear from Jessie Cave's crime story, cheating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme can set your life on a path to destruction and mayhem. Thank goodness she learned the error of her ways, and what she lacks in wine knowledge, she makes up for in snooping out a booze ridden criminal tale. Plus, in our listener crime, we learn that (unsurprisingly) that kittens are rarely any help in combating an intruder. The London Residency is back at The Museum of Comedy in 2025! There is something wonderful about this episode. Jessie has been through a lot. She's taken more life thrown at her than most other people could handle, yet there is still an emphatic positivity that shines through. These Five Brilliant Things have a bittersweet quality to them which makes for a tender, funny and terrific show. Jessie talked about her novel ‘Sunset' on the podcast, and it really is a great piece of work, highly recommended. Please either buy it from an independent bookshop, or you could get it online HERE. Jessie also has a podcast called ‘Whenever it Kicks' which is about parenthood, life generally and more - give that a look HERE. In our Patreon show with Jessie this week, her Five Brilliant Questions did tend towards the Harry Potter, I'll be honest. But there was none of that in the main show so it was fascinating hearing what it was like on set, what cliques there were - and then we get into the real business of Jessie and Russell discussing the finer points of filming sex scenes. Do I have your attention? It's all in our Patreon which you can find here patreon.com/RussellHoward And now you can see the walls coming back into focus as we descend back into the real world and leave this astral plane of blurb. It's been a wild trip and it has been a humbling experience to be your spirit guide through this. If you ever regain your sanity maybe we'll see you again next week? Good Day to You, Enlightened One. Sara's at the Edinburgh Fringe - or is she? So, it's the first of our summer specials where we talk TV with the festival's most dazzling comedians. Today, it's Jessie Cave. We loved her previous Edinburgh show, Sunrise, and she's back at the Fringe with *two* shows, An Ecstatic Display and a work-in-progress with her partner/ex (delete as applicable) and baby-pappa, Alfie Brown. You may know Jessie from her many TV appearances and acting roles, or as Lavender Brown in various Harry Potter movies and other I.P. She's funny, she's insightful, she's candid, and she's got all the talent. It's all very triggering to Sara, but she'd still like to be Jessie's BFF.See Sara at the Fringe: https://bit.ly/3vRVCw3A more gracious podcaster would have linked to Jessie's Fringe shows first: https://bit.ly/jtltw and https://bit.ly/jtltw2Email us: fuckoff@firecrotchandnormcore.comReduce the debt Sara is accruing in Edinburgh: https://www.patreon.com/THEYLIKETOWATCHEdited by Annabel Port https://annabelport.substack.com/ Hosted on Acast. I'm so pleased to bring you this s2 bonus episode sponsored by Sage Appliances, with Cariad Lloyd, which we recorded in front of a live audience a month ago. Cariad is a comedian and writer and the creator of the cult podcast, Griefcast, where she interviews famous people (usually comedians) like Robert Webb, David Baddiel and Sara Pascoe about the human experience of death and grief, and which has won multiple British Podcast Awards. I'm really interested in grief: why we fear it (especially other people's), why we expect grief to look a certain way, the lack of nuance in our understanding of grief. What I love about Griefcast is the way it democratises grief: there is no one way to grieve. Grief, as Cariad digs into, is not just very sad, it is funny, absurd, weird and life-expanding. You can listen to a new series of Griefcast now, on all good pod platforms and find Griefcast on Twitter @thegriefcast. Here are some helpful resources from Cariad: The Grief Network Let's Talk About Loss charity Dead Parent Club podcast The New Normal charity Bereavement Room podcast And some books I recommend: Grief Works by Julia Samuel, And Then We Saw Stars by Jayson Greene, It's Your Loss by Robyn Donaldson and Emma Hopkinson, Languages of Loss by Sasha Bates, Sunset by Jessie Cave and The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.
On this episode of the Brighton Book Club, we hear from local author of LOVE IS THE ANSWER, Ben Craib, talk to avid reader Laura Mugridge about the Women's Prize shortlist (plus bonus material on Sally Rooney and Jessie Cave's SUNSET), to artist and creator of COMA, a graphic novel depicting the author's 15-day medically induced coma, Zara Slattery, and to Heidi James, author of WOUNDING, this month's book club book.
