The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Jay Franze sits down with Jason Hale, a seasoned touring musician whose roots run deep in the heart of Kentucky. Hailing from Isonville, a town nestled between the hometowns of country legends Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs, Jason's journey through music spans an impressive three decades. From strumming his first chords at age 10 to joining local bands at 12, Jason's passion for music ignited early. By 15, he was already part of a professional regional band, and in 2005, he received his first national artist call from Ronnie Bowman.Throughout his career, Jason has shared the stage and studio with many talented artists, including Doug Stone, Ronnie Bowman, Katrina Elam, and Daryle Singletary, to name a few. When not captivating audiences with his bass skills, Jason runs a recording studio, offering his expertise in remote bass overdubs, recording, and mixing for artists and bands alike. Plus, he's been tuning pianos since 2015 – talk about a multi-talented musician!Join us as Jason takes us behind the scenes of his remarkable journey, from playing iconic venues like Heinz Field and the Las Vegas House of Blues touring across 48 states, France, and Canada. He's amassed a collection of unforgettable experiences, including recording sessions with Daryle Singletary's "Country Roads" and Nathan & Chesi Arnett's "Too Far Gone" EP.With his trusty Sadowsky and Fender basses, Line 6 Variax, and a classic Martin D18V in hand, Jason's gear reflects his dedication to his craft. Jason's journey is extraordinary, from the largest crowd of 20k at Country Jam in Grand Junction to fulfilling his dream of opening for Merle Haggard.Show InformationHost: Jay FranzeGuest: Tyler SchwankeRecorded: February 21, 2024LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.com Support the show
The accessory that is the biggest waste of time in the pedal industry? I think you could guess before we tell you… Budge and Josh talk about a really cool get together we had this week where we found possibly the lowest and most brutal guitar sound ever. We also give a run down on the HX Stomp from a QC users perspective and vice versa. Join us for this and much more on this week's Fret Talk Podcast. I was overhearing this guy talking on the phone directly outside my window, and I was playing these chords over and over. The two combined in my head. Sometimes we just need a little bit of hope. This is the second single for the upcoming Rose with Teeth album. LYRICS: "It's a huge trauma thing with him—I'm not a therapist." There's nothing in our blood that determines who we are. This pain is not a natural outcome of existence— to be honest, it's incredible we've gotten this far. This is our chance, listen here: all we have to do is wait, wait here and listen to me. (That's an annoying trait!) Wait, what are you doing there? GET THE FUCK DOWN FROM THAT TREE Splitting little hairs isn't fair! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME? "There's a future for both of us unencumbered— unencumbered by the pain of our pasts." I know that everyone's days are numbered, but you'd be shocked by how long we could last. The Russian and Chinese governments have been profoundly involved in the global opioid trade, as has the United States government. Chinese and Russian actors have been known to mass-produce carfentanil, a highly potent synthetic opioid, not only as a drug and cutting agent, but as a chemical weapon. Carfentanil and other fentanyl derivatives are the most common agents in what have been termed "deaths of despair" in the poorer, neglected regions of the United States and Russia. The drug trade has always been wrapped up in political intrigue, and the role of the United States, specifically the CIA, is no exception. As Peter Dale Scott has written about, the so-called War on Drugs has mostly been an excuse for intelligence agencies and cartels, often in alliance, to enrich themselves at the expense of other people. Iran-Contra was only one small piece of the gigantic puzzle, and even then, it goes deeper than assumed. For instance, the CIA in the '50s and '60s was deeply tied with the business of psychedelics manufacturing and distribution, in part because the recreational use of such enabled them to gather a large recruitment base for experiments involving combining drugs, electronics, and various forms of torture and abuse in order to determine if the individual mind, and society at large, could be controlled. Maybe it was these experiments that fed into worldwide delusions about electronic harassment, or what is often called 電波 in Japanese... This is the first single for the upcoming second Rose with Teeth album. LYRICS: Александра Элбакян, моя любовь – милость твоя. Знание заставляет меня потерять себя в странных занятиях, что отвлекают меня от боли, и волн, что они вещают. I don't know what I am trying to do with my time, with my life. I am waiting for you to tell me what my move is, but I don't even know who you are. Tell me when it is my time to go and I'll go without a fight, but the horrific light makes me wonder if it's worth having eyes and eyesight. And I know that I'm waiting and I can't stand the wait 'cause the drugs are pumping in and I know I'll suffocate. Sunny Sheu was a Taiwanese immigrant to Queens, NY who was the victim of a mortgage fraud. In the process of attempting to secure justice for himself, he came across evidence allegedly documenting improprieties on the part of the judge on his case who refused to return his house to him even after the fraudsters were arrested. After compiling this evidence, he was harassed by NYPD officers and then died under mysterious circumstances. Even his cause of death is controversial, but evidence points to deliberately inflicted blunt force trauma. No investigation has been carried out. Most of the media has refused to take this story up so far; only a few independent outlets have been willing to report on it. You may read their reporting in the links below: • http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/10943-the-death-of-sunny-sheu • https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2011/06/sunny-sheu-murdered-for-investigating-ny-foreclosure-judge-joseph-golia.html • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhDrff84ZAA DISCLAIMER 1: Rose with Teeth has no affiliation with the family, friends, or associates of Sunny Sheu as of the time of writing, and as of such time this song is not officially endorsed by any of them. I became interested in this case a couple years ago while researching corruption at various levels of government and it's stuck with me, haunting me ever since. I believe that any story like this is in the public's interest to be disseminated and understood widely. Thus I wrote a song about it. DISCLAIMER 2: For legal purposes, neither this song nor any accompanying media (images, descriptions, etc.) is making any allegations against anyone. This is an artistic work based on speculation and imagination. This is likely going to be the last "non-album single" released before my next album, but that, like everything else in existence, is subject to change. • Lyrics: You said, "Get off my case, I've got evidence against you. Mr. Justice got a lot on his hands." Tried to arm yourself with paper self-defence, you found yourself in a bad circumstance. No one knows what happened to you— (No one knows what—) cracked your head right on the ground. (—we can't be sure.) There are a lot of questions here, (We don't know what happened;) but someone doesn't want answers found. (we can't be sure.) A witness said you fell, so no need for investigation, even though it's proper practice and that is the expectation, but the judge committed fraud and the cops are on his side, and if the gang wants you dead, there is nowhere you can hide. No one knows what happened to you— (No one knows what—) cracked your head right on the ground. (—we can't be sure.) There are a lot of questions here, (We don't know what happened;) but someone doesn't want answers found. (we can't be sure.) It goes all the way up to the top— no one would report it. From coroners to street-level cops— no one would report it. From the media up to the feds— no one would report it. He wanted justice, now he is dead— no one would report it. • Credits: • Angie Sutherland ──vocals, guitars, synths, lyrics, composition, production, mixing, mastering, album art, design Notes: All lyrics written by Angie Sutherland. Welcome, welcome, welcome listeners and this week we have not only our resident Mr Matt Quine, but also a very special guest that gets mention quite a lot on the cast due to him a) being a close personal friend and a reason for my guitar collection being so large and b) one of our special patronisers, Mr Adam Yeomans of Chevtone FX. We have a chat about being old and grumpy sods and how it might fall in our favour after this global "Backstreet Boys Reunion" blows over, seriously, no rubbing up against people! We also discuss some of the finer points of the Variax and how Matt has got on with the software side of things (spoilers: not good). We also dive into Yeomans' newest endeavour with Chevtone FX and how he plans to bring some boutique, vintage inspired guitar pedals to the modern market as well as discussing the two pedals that kick it all off. This is a blooming good episode if I do say so myself and I had an absolute blast making it, as did Matt and Adam. We hope you enjoy it even just half as much as we do, thanks for sticking with us. We sat down with our good friend Chad Huskey who is no stranger to our show and discussed all things Variax (guitar from Line 6) and how versatile a tool… The post Variax & Chad Huskey On The Helix Hour appeared first on EVH & Gear TV - The Weekly Eddie Van Halen Talkshow.
BudgetPedalChap, Matt and Ayrton travel down the NAMM highway of guitar news. We get all technical about guitar practice and the joys of tabbing. We discuss some cool NAMMy news including a new pedal from those lovely chaps over at TC, as well as mentioning a reinvigoration of the ol Revstart and Variax ranges. We become totally dumfounded by the concept of a certain product that, if we are quite honest, seems like two completely unrelated products were drawn from a hat and told they must be combined. Seriously, who needs those to things put together?! The month of February is sponsored by Fletcher pickups, who this week get a good couple of mentions because we forgot to on the last live cast. “A little Bohemian Rhapsody gentleman?” By popular request Richie and Jarrett review the brand new Queen biopic. SPOILER ALERT… they really dug it! They talk about Richie’s brief encounter with the band, and Jarrett is all of a sudden proficient in guitar.
Richie and Jarrett are back and they got a lotta problems and projects to share. In a previously recorded live stream Jarrett shows off his completed proton pack build, Richie displays his modded Les Paul Tribute, and find out that everything they hate is cause of Russian bots. They also answer some live fan questions to which the answers are yes, no, and it’s Kathleen Kennedy’s fault. Enjoy!

BudgetPedalChap and Matt Quine barely even mention the Variax this week! It is a miracle… well, kind of. Mr BudgetPedalChap gets all nostalgic over one of the guitar brands he has a massive soft spot for and decides to dip into their current catalogue to see what is going on. We discuss the ubiquitous Fulltone OCD and get all working-manly by talking about woodworking. We tackle the burning question on everyone’s lips: is the Peavey Vypyr pro 100 any good? Ok, maybe it isn’t the hottest of topics and we talk about it without actually having played one, but this week’s news was incredibly slow so I mean, come on, give us a bit of slack here. If you like what you hear, don’t be shy, say hi on our Facebook group and also drop us a 5-star review. We appreciate the support as much as you appreciate the entertainment, so let’s work together to make this even bigger and better! STRAIGHT UP WARNING – the audio on the first five minutes is super crappy, I can only apologise and tell you it gets better, honestly. BudgetPedalChap and Matt Quine get a little bit gushy about the Variax again, don’t worry, it isn’t as much as last week. They honestly do sound good though and are hugely inspiring when being able to switch quickly between massively different tones. We look at the new offering from the Fender parallel universe line (yup, it is the one that Matt wants). We discuss a bit of an Xotic Tele and take a look at a new pedal from the guys and gals over at JRockett. We gove a mention to Cort, a company that doesn’t get a huge deal of recognition, and look at some potentially game changing tech they are bringing to the table. If you like what you hear, don’t be shy, say hi on our Facebook group and also drop us a 5-star review. BudgetPedalChap and Matt Quine go on a bit of a journey this week. Warning up front: this week’s cast is Variax as fuck. We delve super deep into the history and inner-workings of the Line6 Variax, so if it isn’t of any interest, I suggest skipping until about 50 minutes in. As we did get a bit carried away with this, this week’s cast is super long and full of news, which is basically made of all of the guitars that I want because there was very little actual news this week. The Steel Panther saga concludes this week with a shock release. If you enjoy what you hear, show some love by leaving a 5-star review on iTunes and share the cast too! Thanks once again for choosing our podcast, your support is what keeps this train a rollin’. Brand X keyboardist Chris Clark knows all the Prog Rock! In this episode Chris schools the Band Geeks on gear and heavy duty music theory followed by a cover of the classic Yes opus, Close To The Edge!
In episode 12 we sit down with YouTube sensation, Leo Moracchioli from Frog Leap Studios. Among many things, Leo is a Line 6 artist actively using Helix & Variax as… The post Leo Moracchioli Frog Leap Studios appeared first on EVH & Gear TV - The Weekly Eddie Van Halen Talkshow.
BudgetPedalChap and Matt Quine are joined this week by a huge cast of podcasters, including our South-side swear machine Mick Dodd, the one-and-only Paul Farrell and the man who is single-handedly keeping the guitar economy booming Chris Wilson. We catch up with Chris and his many purchases since last he was on the cast as well as discussing the Line 6 Variax, whilst also touching upon the quandary 'do we buy the gear to serve the show or is it to serve ourselves?' We discuss the big G and the future of the company and BudgetPedalChap shares some controversial opinions on the Foo Fighters. What an absolute cracker of a show this week, so if it is half as fun to listen to as it was to record, it'll be a blinder! Show us some love by sharing the cast with a friend and getting them to subscribe too, we go through a lot of trouble sometimes to get the cast out, so help a cast out. Dan and Eric talk about driving, MJ Preston, corporate communication, Applebee's, Ray Lewis, Dan Marino, My Name Is Kelly tattoo, Rihanna, Blackberry, Microsoft, Windows 8, Apple TV, Netflix, House Of Cards, 30 Rock, Liz Lemon, Coke, owls, animal noises, guitar amps, Variax, guitars, Rob Halford, Pitfall, John Dies At The End, Trollhunter, The Good Son, Halloween 3, MacBeth, Piranah 3DD, Haunting of Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia, East Meets West, ninjas, Star Wars, and J.J. A.A. Milne wrote the poem that comprises the verses of this song. I added the chorus. It's a song dedicated to Stephen Colbert and his ever-vigilant efforts toward warning the public about Bear Safety. Friends and relatives helped out with the vocals and claps. I played the cowbell and bongos. The Variax bass provided the upright bass sounds, and for reasons of proper balance I played the acoustic guitar part on the Variax guitar. There's almost no effects, not even EQ, used except for on the lead vocal and low background vocal at the end, and a reverb over the whole thing. The guitar part is from a song I wrote 15 years ago that I long forgot, and it somehow made its way into this piece.
The most-requested song so far was, of course, "Free Bird," by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I took a slightly different approach to this one: I played five different guitar parts, all live: bass, clean electric, acoustic, slide, and solo. It may not be the best one-man live version of Free Bird, but it may well be the most ... comprehensive. To get different parts playing at the same time I used a BOSS RC-2 LoopStation pedal, and to play different guitars (bass [which is a Firebird detuned an octave], acoustic, various electrics) I use the Line 6 Variax modeling guitar, and to switch between the guitars and amp/fx I used the Line 6 PODxt Live. Oh, and that nifty slide I am using, that you can flip around to play chords, is the Axys slide by Shubb. "Free Bird" was requested by Oliver Patrick Threshie, and neeracher. So BLAME THEM.
I came up with this riff a few years ago, and the lyrics came later. It's about doing a lot of things in your life that are, simply, a waste of time. Simple song. Kinda fun to play if I'm ... in the mood. And I love the riff. This is the first song I recorded with the Variax. It's hard to say too much about how cool this guitar is to record with. Tons of great tone with no hum. I've added download links for the Variax and PODxt files. The Variax file is simply the default Lester-3 uptuned a half step.
