When users try to share XPression Video Codec files for review by users without XPression, the ability to play the files on a Windows 10 PC seems to befuddle some folks. Installing the XPression Video Codec is pretty easy, but some users prefer using VideoLAN's VLC media player over the native tools in Windows. Ross Video has developed the VLC plugin, for the XPression Video Codec, so now VLC users with the XPression Video Codec installed can view XPression Video assets and Clips. Intro Randy discusses how he researches a desktop application and decides it if may be worth trying out and, most importantly, is safe to install on your computer. Announcements • One of the awesome software tools I had mentioned a while back, Keywordtool.io, will offer Manly Hanley Podcast listeners an amazing discount of $20 USD per month off a Keyboard Tool Pro Subscription! If you'd decide you'd like to sign up, just email them after signing up and mention the Podcast for this discount. What I look for in an Application and how I decide If I'm going to actually install it. • I'll look for some functionality that perhaps is missing from the stock setup of an Operation System. ○ A first example would be something like the File Explorer in Windows § There is a "File Explorer replacement", called Multi Commander that I've heard of. Just because there is an app out there that everyone is talking about, doesn't mean it's safe to install. http://multicommander.com/ □ Virus Total. Upload the installer file and it does a checksum and confirms if there is any reporting of malicious behavior. ○ This application is a stretch, because I find the default Windows 10 photo viewer to be lightweight and really good. FastStone Image viewer is still more powerful and worth a shot, since it's free. https://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm ○ Google Earth (Pro). The desktop version Is now the pro version that I think was originally $300 or $400. https://www.google.com/earth/ ○ VLC Media Player. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ○ OneNote. - This is one I've done an entire episode on. If you scroll through your podcast app and search for Episode 4 in our first season, you'll see that I talk about OneNote quite a bit. OneNote - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/onenote/digital-note-taking-app?ms.url=onenotecom&rtc=1 S1:E4 - https://www.randyhanley.com/2019/04/06/manly-hanley-podcast-s1e4-productivity-tips-plus-50-amazon-gift-card-giveaway/ ○ Notepad ++ - If you have Windows operating system, this is a must. Even though it's GPL license, the developer allegedly state he'll only program this app for Windows. So of, naturally, there are clones on other operating systems that try to mimic its greatness. https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ ○ Ultimate Windows Tweaker - I think it's a great app, that while not having a pretty website/presentation, it's a great app once you try it out. https://news.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-4-5-released-for-windows-10-v1809-93754/ Follow our Podcast ● If you're a new listener to the Manly Hanley Podcast, we would love to hear from you. If you think Windows users need the VLC Media Player to view DVDs, you're right, but that's only part of the story. VLC does a lot more and it's an open-source application. In Short Circuits: High-resolution screens are great, but users often say the tiny text and icons are hard to see. If that describes you, I have good news: These are easy fixes. • Mac users are sometimes distressed by the lack of ports on Macbook Pro machines. A cleverly designed dock not only provides more ports, but also adds a lot of disk space. And it can be used on any computer or portable device that has a USB-C port. In Spare Parts (only on the website): Technology may be able to help track new COVID-19 cases as states relax some of the restrictions we've been dealing with. • If you're trying to find out when your stimulus check will arrive from the IRS, the IRS website may be able to help; beware of rogue sites, though, because more than 4000 new domains exist and they all want to "help" you. • Twenty years ago: The MP3 revolution was moving right along, but we still had to deal with unknown new terms such as "rip".

Erik and Bob take your questions. Honeywell gets "frosty" reception as "cloud-based" thermostat freezes up for a week. After trying an experimental technique to lay fiber optic cable more cheaply and quickly, Google Fiber pulls out of Louisville. $145 million in cryptocurrency frozen after the death of funds' owner. New York police department demands that Google's Waze traffic app stops revealing DWI checkpoints. A caller wants to know how long properly configured business computers should last before they need replacement. A Mac user wants to know how to make VLC Media Player the default player for Mac and disable QuickTime Player. A caller asks information on how to best back up his computer in order to prevent data loss. After Microsoft Outlook was reinstalled after a computer failure, a listener wonders why Outlook is constantly "syncing." Amazon rethinking its NYC headquarters after critics' concerns over massive corporate tax breaks. A caller looking to replace his desktop computer wonders how the slimline "compact" desktops compare to traditional desktop models. An iPhone user from Michigan wants to know if photos deleted from his iPhone also get deleted from his iCloud account when he deletes photos.
A Mozilla Firefox user has problems loading a particular website. We suggest downloading a new copy of the browser and tell how to "export" bookmarks into the new browser. A caller helps out the Mac QuickTime user from last hour by suggesting VLC Media Player as an alternative video player instead of QuickTime media player. A caller has a problem with an "image sync" viral popup in his taskbar, plus a malicious "cloudfront.net" popup. We offer help on removing the malware, and clearing browser caches. A user asks for help in making sure OpenDNS is still working on her system after her router was serviced by an Internet Service Provider. We also help with information on clearing the browser "cache" (a temporary storage area that helps web pages appear faster) in the Google Chrome web browser. A caller wonders if there has ever been an effort to standardize power connectors on notebook computers. The USB-C connector for power is becoming more standardized for power adapters. Also the caller wonders if there is a way to "mouse over" suspicious links on a cell phone or tablet. We offer a a link to a "URL Deobfuscator" on the Computer Talk With TAB web site. Our final caller is looking for a way to convert old Lotus AmiPro word processing files into Word format.
Erik and Bob take your questions. Tesla increases its electric car charging prices to the point that gas may be cheaper. Electrify America shutting down all its high power electric car chargers due to a potential cable defect. McAfee anti-virus founder John McAfee hires hundreds of body look-a-likes ahead of 2020 presidential bid. China bans use of Microsoft's Bing search engine. United Kingdom's Gatwick Airport to test robot valet for parking cars. A listener wonders about the potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence technology. A MacBook Pro user running Lion is unable to close open QuickTime videos. Another caller helps out by suggesting VLC Media Player as an alternative video player instead of QuickTime. A caller looks for a recommendation for two computers: one Chromebook for financial use, and another PC for e-mail and Internet use. We suggest a computer in the $600-$800 price range, Intel i5 processors, 8 GB of RAM, and using a hybrid hard drive, Windows 10 operation system and using a reputable local dealer rather than mail order.
Dieses Mal beschaeftigen wir uns mit vielen aktuellen Themen rund um die Vergangenheit und Zukunft Nintendos.
