Tune in for my conversation with Queensland-based artist Lynda Deans, whose profound spiritual experience at Uluru three years ago inspired her to begin creating unique and extraordinary art. Lynda, who describes the experience at Uluru as “a birthing”, has always been in touch with the mystical dimension of life. In our conversation, Lynda shares about many spiritual encounters and moments of synchronicity she's experienced, including seeing “a fully-fledged angel”, the mysterious meeting in a bookstore on the day of her husband's sudden passing, her memories of a past life in Jesus's time, and much more. What the Riff?!?

Aerosmith is a band in two acts.  They were a highly successful group in the 70's, but arguments and drugs left the band a shade of its former self by 1980.  A second chance was presented when the crossover collaboration between Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. on "Walk this Way" became a number 4 US hit in 1986.  The bad went into drug rehab at the insistence of manager Tim Collins, and had a major hit with their ninth studio album "Permanent Vacation."Aerosmith demonstrated that their second act was not just a fluke with their tenth studio album, Pump, which was even more successful than Permanent Vacation.  This was a significant comeback, re-establishing the band as one of rock's premier acts.  The album was polished and energetic, combining a gritty hard rock sound with pop sensibilities.  The album was not only a commercial success, peaking at number 5 on the US charts and being certified 7x platinum by 1995, but was also a critical success, landing Aerosmith their first Grammy for "Janie's Got a Gun."  Pump was the fourth best-selling album of the year 1990.The band lineup for this album had Steven Tyler on vocals, keyboards, and harmonica, Joe Perry on guitar and backing vocals, Brad Whitford on guitar, Tom Hamiilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums.  Guitarist Brad Whitford explained the album title on a 1989 MTV special by saying "now that we're off drugs, we're all pumped up."  John Lynch brings us this stellar rock and pop sensation this week. Water Song/Janie's Got a GunA 10-second instrumental called "Water Song" precedes the song written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton.  The second single from the album went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It describes the revenge of a young woman for the childhood abuse she experienced.  Aerosmith won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for this song.Dulcimer Stomp/The Other SideAnother song with a brief instrumental lead-in, this was the fourth single released from the album.  It was written by Jim Vallance and Steven Tyler, with Holland-Dozier-Holland receiving songwriting credit after threatening to file suit over similarities between this and their song "Standing in the Shadows of Love."  The lyrics are about a turbulent relationship, with the singer wanting to get past the emotional roller-coaster. Monkey on My BackIt is difficult to find a deep cut on this album, but this is one that was not released as a single.  Tyler and Perry wrote this track about the band's struggles with addiction.  It was the first song that Tyler and Perry wrote for the album, and it was composed in November 1988 prior to the end of their Permanent Vacation tour.Going Down/Love In an ElevatorA double entendre-laden skit leads in this double entendre-laden song.  Tyler and Perry wrote this piece, and it was inspired by an actual experience Steven Tyler had where he was making out with a woman in an elevator and the doors opened.  It was nominated for a Grammy in 1990 for Best Hard Rock Performance, but Aerosmith lost out to Living Colour on that one. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television music performance and dance program “American Bandstand” Dick Clark's music show which premiered in March 1952 had its final show on October 7, 1989. STAFF PICKS:Sowing the Seeds of Love by Tears for FearsBruce brings us a Beatles-esque song from the third Tears for Fears album, "Seeds of Love."  It was written by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, and hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, their fourth and final entry into the top 10.  Orzabal considers it to be the most overtly political song Tears for Fears had written at the time.  Big Talk by WarrantRob's staff pick is a rocking tune from glam metal band Warrant's first album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich."  This third single from the album made it to number 30 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, though it only made it to number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album went to number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.Pictures of Matchstick Men by Camper Van Beethoven Wayne brings us a cover of the first hit single by Status Quo, released in 1968.  This rendition combines elements of pop, ska, punk, folks, alternative, and country.  the "Matchstick men" reference is to the paintings of L.S. Lowry, and English painter who depicted Salford, Manchester, and other industrial scenes in his works. It's Not Enough by StarshipLynch's staff pick is the second single released off Starship's third album, the first album after Grace Slick left the band.  It went to number 12 on the Billboard charts, the final top 40 hit for the band.  This is the sound that most typified the produced sound of the late 80's.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Flying In a Blue Dream by the Joe SatrianiThe title track to Satriani's third studio album closes out this week's podcast.

Notes: Today's song is by Gabriel Paul, of the Crow and Eel Clan of the Penobscot, whose homelands are located along various waterways in Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. The song is a song to thank and honor water. I encourage you to learn and take it to water near you to sing -- and then maybe create your own water song and connect to the water that is near you! Gabe describes the song's origins on this webpage, and he and his niece, Leigh, have given permission for this song to be sung and shared freely. It is a privilege to be invited to sing in the language of the Penawahpskek nation, and I'll help you learn it with care – but know that we are guests, and I'm sure I have an accent – it's okay to be uncomfortable, and honored at the same time. Then visit the Penobscot nation site to respectfully learn more about these people who claim one of the oldest continuous governments in the world. A people who have lived in one place for 11,000 years have a very different perspective than mine, as a child of immigrants. In this episode, I quote Weh'na Ha'mu' Kwasset (She Who Brings the Light), an Indigenous writer and visionary who was raised on Penobscot land, and is also known as Sherri Mitchell. Her book is Sacred Instructions: Indigenous Wisdom for Living Spirit-Based Change. Links: Youtube recording of Leigh Neptune singing this song. Marie: This week on Minnesota Native News, a look at why many people in Indian Country oppose Line Three. I'm Marie Rock.  Enbridge Energy says the new pipeline is needed to transport oil safely.Reporter Emma Needham has been talking with community members in Northern Minnesota Emma: The route has been clear cut, a trench has been dug, and Enbridge is now burying the pipe underground and under many major waterways. Many native community members say they do not want to see this pipeline completed. 8-year-old Water Protector, Jagger stands on a frozen lake near her home on the Fond Du Lac Reservation, singing the Nibi Song. She and her family hope the song inspires people to protect the water.[20 Seconds of Water Song covers the first round of words]Simone Senogles is also an activist. She is a member of Red Lake Nation and has worked with the Bemidji-based Indigenous Environmental Network for 20 years. Simone Senagles “So we understand that line three is part of the fossil fuel infrastructure, right? And I think particularly for Minnesota, we are called the land of 10,000 lakes, and it's true! You can't go very far without running into some water. And so, having pipelines that are known to leak, are known to fail, running through water-rich land, is preposterous. It's outrageous. Like who thought of that? Who thinks that's a good idea?!”.Emma: Back in 1991, the Line 3 pipeline ruptured near Grand Rapids, spilling over 1.7 million gallons of oil into the Prairie River, which connects to the Mississippi River. The only thing that saved both rivers was the 18 inches of ice covering the Prairie River that year. Pipeline opponents… like Simone… are worried about another Line 3 spill..  but they are also concerned with Tribal treaty rights. They say Construction and subsequent leaks in this pipeline would devastate hunting, fishing, wild rice harvest and that Native communities rely on these fruits of the earth to connect to their culture, and to feed their families. Simone Senagales: So we know this Line Three emissions are going to push us over the top of what we can come back from...this sort of predatory capitalism system that we all live under, combined with, you know, colonization, capitalism, colonization, gendered violence, racism, sexism, all of those things are connected. And so that when we fight something like line three, we have to be aware of those connections.”Emma: The fear of catastrophe, along with historical disrespect of culture and treaties, has fueled some Native people to take up “direct action” in the form of camps.  There are 4 active camps along the new Line 3 Pipeline Corridor, with a 5th planned to launch this week. Many Water Protectors at the camps say they are concerned with the recent police mobilization against them. Winona LaDuke is a White Earth Tribal member and lead organizer for the camp on Great River Road north of Palisade. Late last week, LaDuke addressed a Minnesota House public safety committee about policing concerns.  Winona LD: The reason that this is a deep concern to us is because of course, Enbridge has said that they will pay for the police costs in Minnesota associated with ensuring that they are enabled to put in Line Three and attended to that there's a lot of I believe civil rights problems that are associated with a Canadian multinational, paying the expenses of your police force in the state of Minnesota, to ensure that a project that they want to get through is able to happen. Now how that's unrolled so far as being very problematic to us. Enbridge Energy did not respond to my message asking for comment on previous oil spills in Minnesota, or for a statement about the camps. In a recent statement, the company said “Our first priority is the safety of all involved - our workers, men and women in law enforcement, and the protesters themselves. As a company, we recognize the rights of individuals and groups to express their views legally and peacefully. We don't tolerate illegal activities of any kind including trespassing, vandalism, or other mischief, and Enbridge will seek to prosecute those individuals to the fullest extent of the law.”  For Minnesota Native News, I'm Emma Needham.

This episode is dedicated to the front line workers. I had the pleasure of interviewing singer/songwriter Nancy Kelel. In this podcast, Nancy and I start out chatting about her influences and why she got into music. More importantly, we speak about the pandemic, and her dedication to Front Line Workers. Her song, Front Line Strong, is linked below. Nancy talks about her inspiration for the song, the viral photo of two nurses holding signs in a hospital window (in her video and used with permission of the family) and her struggle with H1N1 many years ago. She was in a coma for 3-1/2 weeks and talks about her recovery and rehab from this. As mentioned below, we also speak about being grateful. Nancy met the doctor who saved her life in a Costco gas line and had the opportunity to thank him. Proceeds from Front Line Strong go to the Brave of Heart fund. The fund provides charitable grants to eligible family members of frontline healthcare workers and volunteers who lose their lives to COVID-19. Of interest is the Songs Alive contest to write a song about water, which brought awareness to the lack of water and resources on the Navajo reservations in Arizona. She wrote a song called “The Water Song” that she would like to produce. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCml9tS7oaw https://www.braveofheartfund.com/ https://www.songsalive.org/ (check out testimonials) One of the subjects we touched upon was “being grateful”, and Nancy has a lot to be grateful for, as mentioned above. Historian Peter Kuznick is the first guest; he makes the case for Americans to 'hold their noses' and vote for Joe Biden, but also expresses pessimism about the directions a Biden administration is likely to take. Then media scholar Victor Pickard returns to the program to examine commercial media's superficial coverage of the election, as well as its failures on other issues.     Notes:   This program was recorded on November 4 and 5 -- after the presidential election, but before news services projected the winner. He and Oliver Stone wrote the "The Untold History of the United States." On today’s Rewrite Radio, independent scholar Sarina Gruver Moore talks with author Afaa Michael Weaver about how his journey took him from factory work to a Fulbright and ultimately to a professorship and an established writing career--and the spiritual practices that helped him along the way. Afaa M. Weaver is a poet, short story writer, playwright, and editor. You need to listen to this episode to learn his whole story, but--spoiler alert--in 1985, Weaver published his first collection of poetry, Water Song, received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship for poetry, and attended Brown University’s graduate writing program on a fellowship. Weaver has gone on to publish 10 poetry collections, including Multitudes, The Ten Lights of God, and City of Eternal Spring. As a playwright, Weaver wrote Rosa, which was produced at the Venture Theatre in Philadelphia. He edited the collection These Hands I Know: African-American Writers on Family, and his short fiction appears in a number of anthologies including Children of the Night. Weaver has received many accolades, including the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, a Fulbright Scholar appointment, and a fellowship from the Pew Foundation. In addition to teaching at the National Taiwan University and Taipei National University of the Arts on his Fulbright, Weaver held the Alumnae Endowed Chair at Simmons College. He remains a member of the core faculty in the Drew MFA program in Poetry and Poetry in Translation. His papers are held in the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University. In 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland, Afaa Michael Weaver, formerly known as Michael S. Weaver, was born to working class parents. He attended public schools and graduated as a National Merit finalist at the age of sixteen. After two years at the University of Maryland, he entered the world of factory life alongside his father and uncles and remained a factory worker for fifteen years. These years were a literary apprenticeship during which he wrote and published poetry, short fiction, and freelance journalism. During that time he also started 7th Son Press and Blind Alleys, a literary journal. His first book of poetry, Water Song, was published in 1985 as part of the Callaloo series. He received a NEA fellowship for poetry six months after signing the contract for the collections and left factory life to accept admission into Brown University’s graduate writing program on a full university fellowship, where he completed the MA with a focus on theater and playwriting. Concurrently, he completed his BA in Literature in English through Excelsior College. Since Water Song, Weaver has published several more collections of poetry, including The Plum Flower Dance: Poems 1985 to 2005 (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2007); Multitudes; Sandy Point; and The Ten Lights of God, all of which appeared in 2000. His full length play Rosa was produced in 1993 at Venture Theater in Philadelphia under a small-Equity contract. His short fiction appears in Gloria Naylor’s Children of the Night and in Maria Gillan’s Identity Lessons. Weaver has been a Pew fellow in poetry and taught in National Taiwan University and Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan as a Fulbright Scholar. At Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, he is the Alumnae Professor of English and director of the Zora Neale Hurston Literary Center.
